Ohio State at Michigan State: What bettors need to know

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (OFF)

Aaron Craft produced two of the best offensive games of his four-year career against Michigan State last season and the Ohio State point guard will try to continue that trend when the No. 3 Buckeyes travel to the No. 4 Spartans for a Big Ten clash Tuesday. Craft scored his career high of 21 points when these teams met in their second conference game last season, and came back with 20 three weeks later when they collided in the conference tournament semifinal. Craft, who has just one other 20-point game in collegiate career, enters this matchup on a roll after earning Big Ten Player of the Week honors for his efforts last week against Purdue and Nebraska.

Michigan State will counter with shooting guard Gary Harris, who has battled an ankle injury that kept him out three games this season, but appears to be on the mend after scoring 26 points in 37 minutes – both season highs – in a 73-56 victory Saturday at Indiana. Michigan State 6-10 forward Adreian Payne poses a possible matchup problem, but will need to get more shot attempts than he did the last two games if he expects to have an impact. Payne, an Ohio native, combined for 11 field-goal attempts and nine points in the last two games after taking double-digit shot attempts and scoring no fewer than 16 in the previous five games.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: The line and total are currently off the board.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (15-0, 8-6 ATS): The Buckeyes have been successful mostly because of their defense. Ohio State is surrendering an average of 54.9 points, tied for third-best in the nation, and has not allowed an opponent to hit the 70-point mark this season, their longest such streak since they went 22 games during the 2010-11 season. Perimeter defense has been a specialty as the Buckeyes are limiting the opposition to 24.3-percent shooting from 3-point distance, the lowest mark in Division I.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (13-1, 7-4-2 ATS): The Spartans are shooting 39.3 from 3-point distance, which puts 38th in the nation. Harris has seen his long-range efficiency drop off this season, but point guard Keith Appling has connected on 47.2 percent of his 3s, up from 32 percent last season and 25 percent the year before. Travis Trice has been nearly as effective from downtown, hitting on 44.4 percent of his tries from beyond the arc.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Home team is 3-0-1 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Ohio State is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six meetings at Michigan State.
* Underdog is 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.

TIP-INS:

1. Ohio State’s bench has outscored the opposition’s reserves 325-177 this season.

2. Craft, who averages 4.9 assists, needs 39 to pass Bruce Douglas of Illinois (1982-86) to become the Big Ten’s all-time leader.

3. Michigan State F Matt Costello could return to the starting lineup in his third game back after missing four in December with mononucleosis.

Spurs at Grizzlies: What bettors need to know

San Antonio Spurs at Memphis Grizzlies (+5.5, 196.5)

The San Antonio Spurs' frontcourt depth is about to be tested - a notion that's all too familiar for their next opponent. The Spurs will be without center Tiago Splitter when they travel to Memphis on Tuesday to face the Grizzlies, who are still without big man Marc Gasol. Memphis has gone 8-12 since losing Gasol to a sprained knee to slip 3 1/2 games behind eighth-place Dallas in the Western Conference.

The Spurs whipped the Clippers 116-92 on Saturday, but their fourth win in five games came at a price as Splitter was lost for three-to-five weeks with a sprained right shoulder. "Very, very tough," veteran forward Tim Duncan told the San Antonio Express-News. "It's going to be a big loss for us. He's been playing great for us all year." If the Grizzlies can start winning at home - they're 7-11 at FedEx Forum - they might be able to make a charge with six of their next seven games on their own floor.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (San Antonio), SportSouth (Memphis)

LINE: The Grizzlies opened as 5.5-point home dogs. The total opened at 196.5.

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: San Antonio (-13.8) - Memphis (-5) + home court (-3) = San Antonio -5.8

ABOUT THE SPURS (26-8, 18-16 ATS): San Antonio boasts one of the most productive benches in the league but it's getting thin in the post with Splitter out. Second-year center Aron Baynes likely will need to pick up extra minutes to spell Boris Diaw (9.4 points, 3.5 rebounds), who is expected to be back after missing Saturday's game with strep throat. Fortunately for the Spurs, they don't count on much offensive output from the center position thanks to five other players averaging double digits in scoring with Tony Parker (17.7 points, 6.2 assists) and Tim Duncan (14.2 points, 9.5 rebounds) leading the way.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES (15-18, 13-19-1 ATS): Memphis dominated the second half of a 112-84 win at Detroit on Sunday and has won five of its last eight following a five-game skid. The Grizzlies certainly miss Gasol, especially at the defensive end, but they still have a strong inside-outside duo with point guard Mike Conley (17.2 points, 6.3 assists) and bruiser Zach Randolph (17.1 points, 10.5 rebounds). Jon Leuer has shown signs of becoming a bigger contributor at the offensive end - the third-year forward matched his career high with 23 points against the Pistons.

TRENDS:

* Spurs are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Spurs are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Memphis.
* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:

1. The Grizzlies reportedly have reached a deal to send G Jerryd Bayless to Boston in exchange for G Courtney Lee.

2. Spurs G Danny Green, a 39.4 percent shooter from 3-point range, is 3-for-19 from beyond the arc over the last four games.

3. Memphis G Tony Allen (hand) sat out against Detroit and is day-to-day.

Baylor at Iowa State: What bettors need to know

Baylor Bears at Iowa State Cyclones (-7.5, OFF)

Two of the premier power forwards in the nation face off when No. 7 Iowa State hosts No. 9 Baylor in a Big 12 showdown Tuesday night. Melvin Ejim is averaging 17.7 points and 7.6 rebounds for the Cyclones and the 6-6 senior has led the way with four double-doubles this season. Cory Jefferson is a 6-9 senior for the Bears who’s averaging 14.2 points and 8.3 rebounds with five double-doubles.

Baylor should benefit from its size advantage with 7-1 center Isaiah Austin occupying the middle and 6-8 forward Rico Gathers averaging 7.9 points and 7.8 rebounds off the bench. Iowa State does well with the size it has, as 6-6 forward Dustin Hogue is averaging 12.6 points and 9.6 rebounds and 6-4 guard DeAndre Kane does it all with 15 points, 7.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game. Kane won Big 12 Player of the Week honors the last two weeks and an Iowa State player has won the award in six of nine weeks overall.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

LINE: The line opened with Iowa State as 7.5-point faves. The total is currently off the board.

ABOUT BAYLOR (12-1, 3-4 ATS): A key for the Bears could be the contributions from starting guards Brady Heslip and Kenny Chery. Heslip is shooting 47.9 percent from beyond the arc, which has helped open up things up on the interior, and Chery is second on the team at 11.5 points, though he’s coming off back-to-back games in single digits for the first time this season. A wild card for the Bears could be 6-7 sophomore forward Taurean Prince, who is coming off consecutive games in double figures for the first time in his career.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (13-0, 8-3 ATS): Prince could find himself matched up against another 6-7 sophomore forward in Georges Niang, who is second in scoring for the Cyclones at 15.9. Niang has scored at least 14 points in each of the last seven games and presents a challenge because of his ability to score from inside and outside. Monte Morris, a freshman guard, will be looking to reach double figures in scoring in three straight games for the first time this season.

TRENDS:

* Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
* Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Baylor is 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Baylor is 0-7 ATS in the last seven meetings at Iowa State.

TIP-INS:

1. The Cyclones can set a program record with their 14th consecutive victory.

2. Iowa State has had at least four players score in double figures in every game this season.

3. Prince scored 15 first-half points all of last season, but combined for 26 first-half points in the last two games.

Raptors at Pacers What bettors need to know

Toronto Raptors at Indiana Pacers (-7.5, 187)

The Indiana Pacers have lost only once in their last eight games, but that defeat came at the hands of the Toronto Raptors, who visit for a rematch Tuesday. Indiana boasts the best overall (27-6) and home (16-1) records in the NBA and has won two straight since a 95-82 loss at Toronto on New Year's Day. The Raptors have won nine of their last 12 to surge to the top of the Atlantic Division, and they've claimed seven of their last nine on the road.

The Pacers weren't themselves in the last meeting, committing a season-high 23 turnovers en route to their lowest point total of the campaign. "We're going to go out there and battle with the best of them," Raptors leading scorer DeMar DeRozan told reporters after the game. "We don't care who is out there in front of us. We understand that they are going to throw a punch and we're going to throw punches back." Toronto was unable to land another big blow Sunday, losing 102-97 at Miami to snap a five-game winning streak and drop back to .500.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FSN Indiana

LINE: The Pacers opened as 7.5-point faves. The total opened at 187.

COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Toronto (-6) - Indiana (-14.3) + home court (-3) = Indiana -11.3

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (16-16, 18-14 ATS): Toronto has been a vastly different team since trading Rudy Gay to Sacramento, playing more cohesively at both ends of the floor. DeRozan (21.1 points) has taken over as the primary scorer, but point guard Kyle Lowry (15.7 points, 7.6 assists) continues to enjoy a breakout season. The one element the Raptors lack is a dominant big man, though second-year center Jonas Valanciunas (10.7 points, 8.3 rebounds) and veteran forward Amir Johnson (11.6 points, 7.1 rebounds) have played well since Gay's departure.

ABOUT THE PACERS (27-6, 23-10 ATS): Indiana likely can't get away with the sort of sluggish effort it gave in an 82-78 win over a Cleveland team without star Kyrie Irving on Sunday. The Pacers can survive rough nights at the offensive end, though, because of the league's best team defense - they allow an NBA-low 88.6 points per game and lead the league in opponents' field-goal percentage (41.1) and opponents' 3-point field-goal percentage (32.3). Paul George (23.2 points, 6.1 rebounds) leads a balanced attack with all five starters averaging double-digit scoring and reserve Danny Granger (8.9 points) getting stronger each game as he works his way back from a string of injuries.

TRENDS:
* Raptors are 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings in Indiana.
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Underdogs are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Road team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

BUZZER BEATERS:
1. Lowry has recorded six or more assists in a career-best 24 consecutive games, the longest streak in the NBA this season and three shy of Jose Calderon's franchise record.

2. Pacers C Roy Hibbert is averaging 18 points in two meetings with Toronto this season, 5.5 above his season average.

3. Raptors F Tyler Hansbrough (ankle) sat out against Miami and is not expected to play against Indiana.

PRO BASKETBALL

Washington over *Charlotte by 4
Great as underdogs, the Bobcats were 3-6 ATS laying points this season. This is
Charlotte's only home game during a two-week period so the Bobcats may not be
fully focused having just returned from the West Coast and then getting ready to fly
out for two more away contests. WASHINGTON 98-94.

*Cleveland over Philadelphia by 5
Kyrie Irving came into the final days of December on a streak of scoring 20 or more
points in eight of his last 10 games. The 76ers hosted Minnesota on Monday and were
2-12 ATS in their last 14 games through Dec. 28. CLEVELAND 106-101.

*Indiana over Toronto by 7
The Raptors are more than capable of springing an upset having held Oklahoma City
to less than 100 points in a road victory against the Thunder on Dec. 22. Toronto is
a strong rebounding team and have improved its defense enough to rank in the top
10 in fewest points per game. INDIANA 92-85.

*Miami over New Orleans by 12
Dealing with inflated lines, the Heat have failed to cover in 10 of their first 16 home
games. Miami should be motivated for this matchup, however, since they won't be
home for another two weeks. MIAMI 104-92.

*New York over Detroit over 2
Not too many teams can claim to have beaten the Heat and Pacers on the road like
Detroit has. The Pistons, however, were in a 3-8-1 ATS rut through Dec. 29. NEW
YORK 101-99.

**PREFERRED
San Antonio over *Memphis by 15
The Grizzlies have regressed too much to stay competitive with the Spurs with only
point guard Mike Conley playing consistently well. Memphis was 5-14 ATS in its last
19 home games through last Sunday. SAN ANTONIO 106-91.

Phoenix over *Chicago by 3
Not only do the Suns have a strong backcourt with Goran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe
to take advantage of Chicago's banged-up guards, but Miles Plumlee has stepped up
to provide an inside presence. The Bulls had failed to cover in 12 of their last 17 games
through Dec. 29. PHOENIX 94-91.

Golden State over *Milwaukee by 1
Andrew Bogut returns to his former home where he could be greeted by an improved
Milwaukee front line that has Ersan Ilysavoa and Larry Sanders back in the lineup.
This marks Golden State's sixth of seven consecutive road games. GOLDEN STATE
106-105.

*Dallas over Los Angeles Lakers by 8
The Lakers have defeated Dallas nine of the last 11 times, but minus Kobe Bryant
don't have the scoring weapons to keep up with Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis.
DALLAS 109-101.

**PREFERRED
*Denver over Boston by 16
Boston entered the new year having lost six of nine matchups to Western Conference
teams. The Celtics can't be trusted out of their mediocre Eastern Conference comfort
zone. The Celtics did beat the Nuggets at home. But the revenge-seeking Nuggets
have beaten the Celtics each of the past four years at home, winning by an average of
more than nine points per game. DENVER 102-86.

Oklahoma City over *Utah by 8
Utah has failed to cover five of the past seven times it has been a home 'dog. Trey
Burke is learning on the go mixing good and bad shooting nights. OKLAHOMA
CITY 101-93.

Portland over *Sacramento by 4
Sacramento entered the last Sunday of December having covered 10 of 14 times versus
opponents with a .600 or better winning percentage. PORTLAND 101-97.

Transferring from Denver in the Sun Belt, the ability of Baylor guard Royce O’Neale
to guard experienced Big 12 scorers is highly questionable. Brady Heslip’s always has
been. Kenny Chery is only 5’11”. Baylor’s zone helped them beat Kentucky but it
would probably help get them killed by Iowa State.

A few of Houston’s key contributors have been missing in action lately, and their head

‘Wow! Virginia Tech hits 42% of their treys! Syrause plays zone! They will bust that

and they’ve lost home games to NC Greensboro and USC Upstate.
