Michigan St. +2 vs Tennessee

I love Michigan State's rebounding edge this afternoon, and I love their coach Tom Izzo. This is a team that can defend anybody, and with a Tennessee team that has struggled to hit outside jumpers, they'll have to depend on getting in the lane against the Spartans, and that's simply something that is not easy to do against Tom Izzo coached teams. You've got to make your three pointers to beat MSU, and Tenn does not have one guy on their team that can consistently shoot the three.

I think MSU is getting absolutely shafted by oddsmakers and the public alike. Nobody will give this team respect being without their starting guard. Fact is, they are still a very good team, playing for a coach that has been here before. Tennessee is a bit wild with the basketball, and wild with their emotions at times... I'd much prefer to back a level-headed team that is going to crash the offensive glass, and play some very stout defense.

Michigan St. / Tennessee Under 137

I would play this down to 135, but if anything it's going up. I talked about this on the podcast yesterday with the CBB guys. This game is all about defense for both teams. Michigan St. has definitely taken on a defensive approach lately with Lucas being out. They know their floor general isn't out there, and expect that to hinder their offense, so they're combating any negative influence offensively by simply upping the intensity on defense.

Tennessee, surprisingly has done the same thing.. This is a Vols club that really doesn't have any pure shooters. If they can get to the lane and score quickly they will, but the fact that they lack consistent scoring has led them to play much slower in the tournament then normal. They're a team that knows they have to play perfect defense to keep winning, and they know that they've been a bit too turnover prone in the situations where the tempo has sped up.

Both these teams HAVE to play defense to win. This game is not about who scores the most, it's about who gets the most stops, who gets the most rebounds. It'll be a scrappy, hard-fought game. And in my mind that leads to an UNDER.

OffshoreInsiders Senior Handicapper Matt Rivers says take the Detroit Pistons at home against Chicago.

There is no debating that the Pistons are an absolute debacle of a team right now. This franchise has gone from a great one to a pathetic one in pretty much no time at all but it's not like these Bulls are much of anything themselves these days.

The Pistons are at home and should win this game. They are the fresher team as da Bulls just had to bang with the Nets on Saturday night and then travel here to MoTown for this back-to-back. Detroit also has a guy named Ben Gordon who would like nothing better than shoving it up his former team's butts. Gordon has not had the kind of season that he would have liked but the guy is still very capable when motivated.

Chicago just had that 10 game losing streak and is flat out a terrible basketball team right now. Their talent level is just not that high with Luol Deng banged up and even though the Pistons stink Detroit still at least has guys that should be good in Hamilton, Prince, Stuckey, Maxiell, Villaneuva and a few others.

The Bulls have won all three meetings this season and I just can't see four for four from a bad team.

This is far from the lock of my life but at home and being the fresher and more talented team I can't help but make a small play on the Pistons. The Bulls stink, have stunk and will stink one more time.

The pick: Detroit -2

Larry Ness' Las Vegas Insider (7-1 L8 Totals!) CBB

At 2:20 ET my *8* LV Insider is on the Tennessee/Michigan State "over":
If the Vol's win this game, they'll head to the Final Four for the first time in school history. "Our seniors have made a huge difference," Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl said following his team's 76-73 victory over second-seeded Ohio State on Friday. "Guys that want to take this Tennessee basketball program places it's never been." The Vols used superior inside play and its depth to knock off the Big Ten Champion Buckeyes. "All that hard work we put in, it's nice see it pay off and winning some of these close games," said senior guard Bobby Maze, who scored 10 points against the Buckeyes. Wayne Chism led the Vols with 22 points, and 11 boards; Brian Williams had nine points and 12 rebounds. Added Chism; "This team is going to continue to do great things for Tennessee, and try our best to get it somewhere it's never been again," (note: Tennessee has seen the total go "over" the posted number in two of its three NCAA tournament games). The Spartans are looking to reach the Final Four for the sixth time in 12 years. Michigan State was the #5 seed in this year's Midwest Regional; they knocked off New Mexico State, Maryland and then dispensed with Northern Iowa which upset the Jayhawks in the previous round. "We knew if we didn't change then, the ship was going to sink," Draymond Green said. "And it was sinking on us." Green is of course speaking of the adversity his team went through this season and to make it this far. Leader Kalin Lucas went down in the first half against Maryland but still the Spartans are finding ways to win; Tom Izzo: "I think the whole thing about coaching and working with young people is preparing them for adversity. Anybody can sail the ship when the seas are calm and the winds are favorable," (note: Michigan State has seen the total go "over" the posted number in all three games this year when playing with one or less days rest). Both teams will be looking to push the ball whenever given the opportunity; as a result, play on the "over". Good luck…Larry
