Kyle's Pick(s)
2 UNIT = Cincinnati Bengals @ New Orleans Saints - OVER 50.5 (-110)
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.82 units)
Remember before the Patriots game regarding the public perception around the Bengals was? There were some people already slotting them into the Super Bowl. This was finally going to be the year that Andy Dalton won a post-season start. Flash forward to now and are they even going to make the playoffs? This is a must win, in my opinion, for the Bengals after last weeks Thursday night disaster against the Browns. If they beat the Saints on the road this week then you're going to start hearing people talk about how the Bengals are back on track. They've had an extra few days to prepare for this game, so they better look A LOT better than what they looked like against the Browns. Tall order here against the Saints at home. The Saints' offense has been one of the the most prolific home offense in the NFL under Drew Brees the past few years. At home in 2014 the Saints have averaged 31.5 points per game. Other than a slow start against the Vikings early in the season they've been potent for the most part. Overall the Saints are putting up 435 yards per game for 2nd in the NFL, behind only the Colts. I would usually say that the Bengals defense is the most underrated in the NFL. And previously they were. But since beating the Titans 33-7, the defense has had to face some injuries and regressed. Since then the Bengals have allowed 30 points a game, including 43 points to the Patriots and 37 to the Carolina Panthers. They haven't held a team under 20 points since that Titans game, something they were becoming known for was the defense. Losing their best linebacker Vontaze Burfict and corner Leon Hall didn't help the cause. The Bengals' offense looked totally out of sync last week, but with over a week to prepare for the Saints, I think Andy Dalton will look much better. This will be AJ Green's second game back after sitting with an injury. I think him and Dalton will link up to have a fairly big game after having the chance to get in sync in practice this week. A score of 33-24 looks good in this game. I doubt the Saints will be rejected short of 30 points, and the Bengals shouldn't look like a high school offense two weeks straight. I like the OVER 50.5 for this early Sunday afternoon game.
2 UNIT = Philadelphia Eagles @ Green Bay Packers - PACKERS -5 (-102)
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.98 units)
One game, and suddenly everyone is labelling Mark Sanchez as a pro-bowler. I guess though hasn't that been the storyline of his career. When he was with the Jets there were weeks he looked like a franchise quarterback. Sanchez still is what he is, an average quarterback. I see him having stretches where he looks great, and then others where Phili fans are booing him off the field. Sanchez was good last week, but the defense and special teams is what won that game for them against the Panthers. The Eagles' defense teed off on a vulnerable Panthers' offensive line, sacking Cam Newton for 8 sacks. They also returned a pick6 and Darren Sproles took back 65-yard punt return. Sanchez is going to face a stiffer test on the road at Lambeau. He is going to need to keep up with the Packers and Rodgers, who looked unstoppable against the Bears last week. Rodgers was on pace to break the single game touchdown record, before getting pulled in the 2nd half after the game was out of reach. I expect the Packers' offense to look great this week and for the rest of the season. As I mentioned in my article last week, the Packers offense is impossible to slow down at Lambeau. After last week, they are now averaging 41.5 points at home! 31, 42, 38, and 55 to round out 41.5 points. Not only the offense, the defense has given up only 16.25 at home. Clay Matthews was flying around the football as an inside linebacker against the Bears. The Pack should be fired up at home to play the Eagles in national TV. I don't expect the Eagles' defense to look like they did against an abysmal Panther offense. The Packers are a whole different animal at home. Sanchez should endure a few hiccups in this game as well. This should be a close game early, but the Packers should be able to pull away late to win and cover the spread of 5.
2 UNIT = New England Patriots @ Indianapolis Colts - PATRIOTS +3 (-105)
(Note: I'm risking 2.00 units to win 1.90 units)
Betting against Tom Brady in a big game in the regular season is foolish. I won't do it. They have their slip ups when you least expect it, but when the camera is on them, they turn it up a notch. For all of the offense in this game, I am zeroing in on one defensive unit here: the Pats secondary. What is the Colts strength? Andrew Luck and the passing game. Where can the Patriots neutralize a team? With their secondary, that features Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. They won't completely shut the Colts' offense down, but I think are certainly going to make more plays than the Colts' defense is going to make against the Pats. New England is allowing 22 points per game which is tied for 11th in the NFL. You can beat them on the ground, but Indi has little to no running game to take advantage of that. If they did, I would be inclined to take the Colts in this spot. The Patriots' offense put it in overdrive since losing to the Chiefs, 41-14. Ever since that game, the Pats have put up an average of 40.2 points per game in their last five. Additionally, during that stretch, the Pats won by an average of 18.6 points. Who is going to step up and slow down Rob Gronkowski Sunday night? I'll be sitting here for a long time looking for someone to tell me who. That's because I don't think anyone is. The Colts defense is beatable through the air, allowing opposing teams to pass for 263.3 yards a game. That figure puts the Colts as the 27th best defense in the NFL against the pass. The Pats' secondary should be able to disrupt the Colts just enough in this game to pick up the cover and perhaps even win straight up. This isn't a slam dunk pick for me, hence only 2 units on it, but the Pats look like the winning side to me.
Cheers,
Kevin
