MLB Betting News and Notes - Week #11
•Veteran Bell Signs Minor League Deal With Yankees: The New York Yankees signed reliever Heath Bell to a minor league contract on Friday. The Yankees sent the veteran right-hander to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and right-hander Mark Montgomery was moved to Double-A Trenton to make room on the roster. The 36-year-old Bell pitched 17 1/3 innings in 13 games with the Tampa Bay Rays this season and had an 0-1 record with a 7.27 ERA. He was released by the Rays and signed May 16 with the Baltimore Orioles, who assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk. In 10 games with Norfolk, Bell was 2-0 with one save and a 4.22 ERA before opting out of his contract when he learned that he would not be promoted to the Orioles.
•Cubs' Bonifacio Lands On DL: The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder-infielder Emilio Bonifacio on the disabled list with a rib-cage injury before Friday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Bonifacio, the Cubs' leadoff hitter, was injured during Thursday night's 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates when he grounded out to short on the second pitch of the game. He stood in batter's box and then fell to the ground, grimacing in pain, after the swing.
After Bonifacio was assisted off the field, Junior Lake moved from left to center to replace him and Chris Coghlan came in to take over in left. After batting .337 during the first month of the season, Bonifacio tapered off and was hitting .222 in June to drop his average to .266. To take Bonifacio's place on the roster, the Cubs activated outfielder Ryan Sweeney from the DL. Sweeney had been on the DL since May 3 with a right hamstring strain.
•Orioles Minor League RHP Gamboa Suspended: Baltimore Orioles minor league right-handed pitcher Eduardo Gamboa received a 50-game drug suspension, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Friday. Gamboa tested positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension without pay of Gamboa, who is currently on the roster of Triple-A Norfolk of the International League, is effective immediately. The 29-year-old Gamboa had yet to pitch in a major league game.
•Indians Recall LHP Crockett: The Cleveland Indians recalled left-handed relief pitcher Kyle Crockett and optioned left-hander Nick Hagadone to Triple-A Columbus, the team announced Friday. Crockett, 23, will be joining the Indians for the second time this season after having his contract selected from Double-A Akron on May 16 to make his major league debut. Crockett, Cleveland's fourth-round selection, was the first member of the 2013 draft class to reach the majors.
He made three relief appearances for Cleveland, with a 2.08 ERA over 4 1/3 innings. Crockett was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on May 22. In 21 combined appearances at Akron/Columbus this season, Crockett has posted no record and a 0.74 ERA over 24 1/3 innings. Hagadone, 28, has gone 1-0 with a 7.71 ERA over 2 1/3 innings in five relief appearances since being recalled from Columbus on June 2. He is 2-3 with a 3.09 ERA over 23 1/3 innings in 18 relief appearances for the Columbus this season.
•Cards Activate Adams, Option Taveras To Triple-A: The St. Louis Cardinals activated first baseman Matt Adams from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Oscar Taveras to Triple-A Memphis, the team announced Friday. Adams, who had a left calf strain, completed a four-game injury rehabilitation stint with Memphis this past week, going 3-for-15 with a pair of RBIs. Adams is currently ranked fifth in the National League with his team-leading .325 batting average. Despite missing 13 games, he is still tied for the team lead with 16 doubles. Taveras, who homered in his major league debut on May 31, appeared in 11 games for the Cardinals, starting 10 of those games in right field. Taveras was hitting .189 over 37 at-bats.
•Twins Put Hicks On DL, Activate Fuld: The Minnesota Twins placed Aaron Hicks on the 15-day disabled list and activated fellow center fielder Sam Fuld, the team announced Friday. Hicks had not played since Monday. He injured his shoulder while making a game-ending diving catch in center field on Saturday against the Houston Astros, and he said earlier this week that he was still having trouble throwing the ball. Hicks' stint on the disabled list is retroactive to June 10.
He has hit .198 over 125 at-bats. Fuld went on the seven-day disabled list on May 8 with concussion-like symptoms and has missed the Twins' past 32 games. He played four games with Double-A New Britain on a minor league rehab assignment, going 6-for-14 with two doubles and one home run. The Twins also recalled catcher Eric Fryer from Triple-A Rochester to fill the roster spot of rookie catcher Josmil Pinto, who was optioned to Triple-A on Wednesday.
