Game of the Day: Canadiens at Kings

Montreal Canadiens at Los Angeles Kings (N/A)

The Montreal Canadiens look to extend their point streak to seven contests as they begin a four-game road trip against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday. Montreal improved to 5-0-1 in its last six games with a 4-3 overtime triumph over visiting Toronto on Saturday. Max Pacioretty completed his eighth multi-goal performance of the season - and second against the Maple Leafs - by netting his second of the night during a power play at 3:28 of the extra session.

Los Angeles seeks its fifth consecutive victory after skating to a 3-1 home triumph over Carolina on Saturday. Defenseman Alec Martinez snapped a tie with a power-play goal midway through the third period as the Kings improved to 3-0-0 since returning from the Olympic break. Los Angeles routed the Canadiens in Montreal on Dec. 10 as Martinez, Tyler Toffoli and Anze Kopitar each recorded a goal and an assist while Martin Jones made 31 saves in a 6-0 victory.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TSN, RDS (Montreal), FSN West (Los Angeles)

LINE HISTORY: The odds for the game are currently off the board.

POWER RANKINGS: Canadiens (-158) / Kings (-153)

INJURY REPORT: Montreal - Michael Bournival (Ques - Concussion), Carey Price (Ques. Lowe body), Ryan White (Ques. Illness).

WHAT SHARPS SAY: "The Canadiens certainly aren't flying under the radar entering the opener of their Western road swing, not after upsetting the Penguins on the road and then outlasting the Leafs at home in overtime Saturday. Peter Budaj hasn't exactly stood on his head in Carey Price's absence, and if he's between the pipes again on Monday, it might be tough for the Habs to prevail in a defensive struggle against the stingy Kings. Los Angeles often sees its lines shaded at home, but this might be a situation where the Kings are worth a look, as they're undoubtedly rolling heading into this matchup." - Sean Murphy.

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Tough game to get info on because of of all injuries to Habs - Carey price). Guess that is the main storyline. Both teams are playing well, L.A. winners of four straight and Montreal having won five of six." - Mike Perry, Sportsbook.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (34-21-7): Montreal hopes to have Carey Price back from a lower-body injury he aggravated while leading Canada to the gold medal at the Sochi Winter Games. Peter Budaj has gone 2-0-1 in Price's absence, making three straight starts for the first time since April 4-7, 2012. Reigning Norris Trophy winner P.K. Subban scored a goal and set up another Saturday, increasing his career-best totals to 32 assists and 41 points.

ABOUT THE KINGS (34-22-6): Mike Richards ended his 12-game goal-scoring drought Saturday with just his second tally since Nov. 25 - a span of 37 contests. The veteran center needs three goals to surpass his career-low total of 10 from 2006-07 while with Philadelphia. Jonathan Quick has faced 25 shots in each of his last three outings, allowing a total of two goals while also posting his fourth shutout of the season.

TRENDS:
* Canadiens are 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Los Angeles.
* Canadiens are 7-1 in the last 8 meetings.
* Over is 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Los Angeles.

CONSENSUS: There is currently no consensus.

Do good ATS teams make good NCAA bracket picks?
by Chase Ruttig

It is nearly time for the NCAA tournament which means that millions of sports fans will be filling out their brackets in just a couple of short weeks. With millions of different theories out there, we asked the Covers Experts team if good ATS (against the spread) schools make good bracket picks and if there is any correlation between being a good team to bet on during the season and being a solid lock to advance in your NCAA bracket.

Steve Merril

I personally do not rely on ATS records when handicapping the NCAA Tournament or when making Bracket selections. I rely on my power ratings and also analyze each individual matchup, especially pace of play when you can get a slow-down, half court team that might be able to frustrate a more uptempo team.

If anything, I would look to play against teams with good ATS records as they have probably become a bit overrated, especially from a handicapping perspective. In fact, teams on a 3-0 SU/ATS run have been a long-term losing play in the NCAA Tournament. Of course, this theory applies more to handicapping individual games versus the pointspread and not overall Bracket strategy.

As far as bracket strategy, teams that enter in poor current form or overall ATS losing form sometimes surprise. These are normally at-large bids and those teams were good enough to make the NCAA Tournament, even while underachieving from an ATS perspective and often these teams perform well as it becomes a "new season".

Marc Lawrence

When evaluating NCAA brackets, I rarely look at a team's ATS performance record for the season. At this stage of the season, I'm more zoned into a team's statistical numbers (rebounding, defensive field goal percenatge, record away from home, record versus winning foes, etc.). These serve as better gauges of things to come once the tourney starts.

The exception would be teams that have dramatically underachieved in the ATS wars. That can often serve as an indicator of a tourney short-lived.

Teddy Covers

I think a team's overall ATS record is pretty irrelevant, personally. I am, however, very interested in a team's ATS record away from home against quality foes (say, teams that made the Big Dance, or even teams that made the Big Dance or NIT, CIT or CBI). Teams with good ATS records in that particular subset are most assuredly teams I'd be looking to pick in my bracket as well.

Bulls on-fire ATS in the Eastern Conference
By JUSTIN HARTLING

The Chicago Bulls have been stellar against the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are 8-1 against the spread in their last nine against Eastern Conference opponents, with the lone ATS loss coming to the Miami Heat.

The Bulls will look to continue their ATS dominance against the East when they travel to Brooklyn as Monday.

Miller makes 23 saves, wins Blues debut

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Ryan Miller era for St. Louis got off to an inauspicious beginning.

However, when the Blues finally broke an eight-plus-period scoring drought, they kept on scoring to make his debut a winning one.

St. Louis trailed 2-0 after two periods before rallying for a 4-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday.

Blues center Patrik Berglund scored twice, and left wing Magnus Paajarvi and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk also scored third-period goals.

St. Louis (40-14-6) posted its first victory since the Olympic break after losing twice.

Blue Jackets getting good at stringing together wins

The Columbus Blue Jackets are attempting to claw their way into playoff position in an extremely tight Eastern Conference race. They are within striking distance now because of their recent consistency.

The Blue Jackets are 9-2 in their last 11 games following a win and they are coming off a decisive victory over Florida.

The Blue Jackets will travel to Toronto as 1 +115 road dog Monday.

Road team trending in Minnesota/Denver meetings

When the Minnesota Timberwolves visit the Denver Nuggets they will be looking to continue a solid trend for bettors. In the Timberwolves and Nuggets last 26 meetings the road team is 20-5-1 against the spreads.

Nuggets bettors should also be weary as Denver is currently mired in a 2-10 ATS stretch that began on Feb. 5.

Arron Afflalo, Orlando - Ques Wed

Affalo suffered an ankle injury February 21st against the Knicks and has not played since. He is questionable to return Wednesday against the Rockets.

Parker returns, leads Spurs past Mavs

SAN ANTONIO - Guard Tony Parker lobbied to return to the San Antonio Spurs' lineup on Friday against Charlotte. His coach, Gregg Popovich, elected to hold Parker out one more game.

Popovich's decision worked out well for the Spurs. They beat Charlotte without Parker. Then Parker, back after missing six games, scored 22 points and handed out seven assists in 32 minutes as the Spurs defeated the Dallas Mavericks 112-106 Sunday night.

San Antonio (43-16) won for the sixth time in seven games. Dallas (36-25) has lost eight straight games to the Spurs.

Magic hand Sixers their 14th consecutive loss

ORLANDO, Fla. -- When opportunity knocked Sunday night, third-year forward Tobias Harris was more than happy to answer the door.

With veteran starting guards Arron Afflalo and Jameer Nelson sidelined due to injuries, Harris attacked from multiple angles, scoring a career-high 31 points to lead the Orlando Magic to a 92-81 victory over the hapless Philadelphia 76ers.

Philadelphia lost its 14th consecutive game.

Bulls on-fire ATS in the Eastern Conference

The Chicago Bulls have been stellar against the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are 8-1 against the spread in their last nine against Eastern Conference opponents, with the lone ATS loss coming to the Miami Heat.

The Bulls will look to continue their ATS dominance against the East when they travel to Brooklyn as Monday.

Deron Williams, Brooklyn Nets - Prob Mon

Brooklyn Nets PG Deron Williams is nursing a nagging wrist injury but is expected to play Monday against the Bulls.

Bobcats request waivers on G Gordon

The Charlotte Bobcats requested waivers on guard Ben Gordon on Sunday.

Gordon is averaging 5.2 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 14.7 minutes over 19 games this season for Charlotte.

"With the recent acquisition of additional backcourt depth to our roster, we believe this is in the best interests of both parties," general manager Rod Higgins said in a statement. "We want to thank Ben for his contributions over the past two seasons and wish him the best as he moves on in his career."

The Bobcats acquired Gordon from the Detroit Pistons along with a future first-round draft pick in June 2012 for forward Corey Maggette. Gordon averaged 10.0 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 19.6 minutes over 94 games in two seasons with the Bobcats.

Charlotte's roster is at 14 players.

Rockies scrambling for starter with Chacin out

The Colorado Rockies began spring training with four starters set in their rotation and several pitchers competing for the fifth spot.

But the shoulder injury to right-hander Jhoulys Chacin has created an additional opening in the rotation at the outset of the season.

Chacin has a strain and inflammation in his right shoulder, but an MRI last Monday revealed no structural damage. He began using resistance bands on Friday, the first step toward light throwing. Chacin had not thrown a bullpen session before being shut down, and it is uncertain when he will be ready to do so.

Hence, Chacin, a candidate to pitch on Opening Day at the Miami Marlins on March 31 along with left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, will miss his first regular season start and likely more as he builds up arm strength. Barring a setback, mid-April seems a more realistic time for Chacin to launch his 2014 season.

Dodgers OF Kemp cleared to start running

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp's recovery from October ankle surgery moved to another phase this weekend as he was cleared to increase his on-field activities.

Kemp has been limited to running on a treadmill, taking batting practice and fielding ground balls in the outfield through the first three weeks of spring training. But the latest MRI and examination of his left ankle showed sufficient healing for him to increase that activity and begin doing some running on the field.

No timetable for Greinke's return

There is no timetable for when Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Zack Greinke will return from a strained right calf, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

Greinke sustained the injury Thursday. He made just four pitches against two batters in his spring-training debut before exiting with the injury. He played catch and walked without limping Friday.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Sunday his status has not changed.

Greinke caused somewhat of a stir last week when he said he had no interest in traveling to Australia for the Dodgers' season-opening, two-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

But the Dodgers' No. 2 starter backtracked on Thursday, saying he would like to make a start in Sydney. He is likely to pitch in Australia if he is healthy but the injury clouds those plans.

Marlins' Fernandez starting Opening Day

Miami Marlins manager Mike Redmond named right-hander Jose Fernandez the Opening Day starter, making him the youngest pitcher to start a team's first game of the season in seven years.

Fernandez is the reigning National League Rookie of the Year who finished third in the Cy Young Award voting last season.

Fernandez, who will be 21 years and 274 days old when the Marlins open the season March 31 against the Colorado Rockies, will be the youngest Opening Day starter since the Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez in 2007. Hernandez was 20 years and 359 days old.

Previously, the youngest Opening Day starter in Marlins history was Josh Beckett, who was 22 years and 320 days old in 2003.

Fernandez went 12-6 with a 2.19 ERA with 187 strikeouts in 172 2/3 innings last season.

Wildcats (+) over Cowboys- So Oklahoma State has their 'mojo' back and are off 'our' Big-12 Game of the Year winner over Kansas last time out and that might just be too much for them to overcome in two days. The Wildcats were also a 'Hotline' win on Saturday defeating ranked Iowa State at home. Kansas State. The Cowboys might be in an 'emotional' lull. The Wildcats are 14-6 ATS in their last 20 games and get it done here. Take KANSAS STATE!

Monday's Tips
By Kevin Rogers

Grizzlies at Wizards – 7:05 PM EST

Memphis: 33-25 SU, 26-30-2 ATS
Washington: 31-28 SU, 33-25-1 ATS

The Wizards are one of the hottest teams in the Eastern Conference right now, riding a six-game winning streak. Washington returns home following a pair of road victories at Toronto and Philadelphia, capped off by a 122-103 rout of the slumping 76ers as 11-point favorites. Since suffering a four-game ATS skid at home in January, the Wizards own a stellar 12-5-1 ATS record the last 18 contests, while Washington is 3-1 ATS the last four opportunities as an underdog at the Verizon Center.

The Grizzlies were a strong ‘under’ play when Marc Gasol returned to the lineup in January, but Memphis is currently in the midst of a six-game ‘over’ run. Memphis has alternated wins and losses in its last five contests, coming off Saturday’s comeback victory over Cleveland, outscoring the Cavs, 56-31 in the second half of a 110-96 triumph. The last time the Grizzlies and Wizards met up at FedEx Forum last month, Memphis held on for a 92-89 win, but Washington cashed as 4 ½-point underdogs.

Bulls at Nets – 7:35 PM EST

Chicago: 33-26 SU, 31-28 ATS
Brooklyn: 28-29 SU, 29-28 ATS

The Bulls are building up their seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs by the day, as Chicago routed a lifeless New York squad on Sunday, 109-90 as 6 ½-point favorites. Tom Thibodeau’s club are rolling by winning nine of its past 10 games, including a 4-1 SU/ATS record away from the United Center in this stretch. Chicago has had its way with Brooklyn this season, dominating the Nets twice, including a 95-78 triumph at Barclays Center on Christmas afternoon.

The Nets return to the Empire State following a 4-2 SU/ATS road trip since the All-Star break, as Brooklyn took care of Milwaukee as six-point favorites on Saturday, 107-98. Jason Kidd’s squad allowed 99 points or less in four of those six games, as Brooklyn looks to continue its winning ways at the Barclays Center. The Nets are riding a four-game hot streak at home, while covering three times in recent wins over the Pelicans, Bobcats, and Spurs.

Bobcats at Heat – 7:35 PM EST

Charlotte: 27-31 SU, 32-23-3 ATS
Miami: 42-14 SU, 26-28-23 ATS

The Heat goes for the four-game season sweep of the Bobcats on Monday, as Miami looks to extend its winning streak to eight games. In the previous meeting between these Southeast Division foes, the Heat needed overtime to hold off the Bobcats, 104-96 to pick up a front-door cover as 6 ½-point road favorites in mid-January. Miami has completely dominated Charlotte over the years, winning 15 consecutive times over the Bobcats, as the Bobcats last won at American Airlines Arena in January 2010.

The Bobcats may not be a threat in the Eastern Conference, but Charlotte is currently the seventh-seed in the playoff race. Charlotte’s four-game winning streak went up in flames in Friday’s 92-82 defeat at San Antonio as 8 ½-point underdogs, as Steve Clifford’s club trailed by two with 90 seconds left in regulation before falling apart late. The Bobcats have performed well in the role of a road underdog against teams off consecutive wins, posting a 7-2 ATS record in this situation, including outright victories at Golden State, Denver, and Toronto. Charlotte has responded off a straight-up loss since mid-January, going 7-1 ATS the last eight games off a defeat.

Wolves at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

Minnesota: 29-29 SU, 31-27 ATS
Denver: 25-33 SU, 24-34 ATS

Minnesota has slowly come back to life on its current five-game road trip, winning three of the first four contests to pull back to the .500 mark. The Wolves rallied past the Kings on Saturday night as 4 ½-point favorites, 108-97, while also getting back two of their top players, Kevin Martin (26 points) and Nikola Pekovic (20 points) back from injuries. Rick Adelman’s club has drilled the ‘under’ in three straight games, all with closing totals of 211 ½ or higher. Minnesota finally figured out Denver following two early-season losses to the Nuggets, as the Wolves ripped up Denver at the Target Center prior to the All-Star break, 117-90 as 6 ½-point favorites.

The Nuggets have spiraled out control with five consecutive defeats, but Brian Shaw’s team managed a cover as 12-point underdogs at Portland in a 102-96 setback on Saturday. Denver is 0-4 SU/ATS at the Pepsi Center since the All-Star break, while breaking the 100-point mark just twice in the last nine games. In the last eight contests at the Pepsi Center, the Nuggets have hit the ‘over’ just twice, as one of those ‘overs’ needed overtime in a 112-107 loss to Phoenix in the first game after the break.
