Xavier at Villanova: What bettors need to know

Xavier Musketeers at Villanova Wildcats

Ninth-ranked Villanova bounced back from a loss to Creighton by winning three straight in advance of Monday’s home contest against Xavier. The Wildcats lead the Big East in scoring in conference play, averaging 79.9 points after posting 90 points for the second time in three games following a 68-point performance in the defeat to Creighton on Jan. 20. Xavier has lost two in a row and three of five, recording its lowest point total in 14 games in a 68-60 loss to Seton Hall on Saturday.

The Musketeers are second in conference play in field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage, but have allowed 74 points per conference contest, second-worst in the Big East. Xavier allowed 41 points in the second half Saturday and shot just 38.5 percent from the field to fall 2.5 games behind conference leader Creighton. The Wildcats, who trail Creighton by a half-game, play the first of two consecutive home games before a three-game road trip, highlighted by a Feb. 16 rematch with Creighton.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT XAVIER (15-6, 5-3 Big East): Sophomore Semaj Christon is averaging 21.1 points in conference games, and Christon (third in field-goal percentage at 58.8 percent) and Isaiah Philmore (second at 65.8 percent) have paced the offense. Matt Stainbrook finished with 16 points and 14 rebounds Saturday, but Xavier’s struggles were highlighted by Christon’s foul trouble and a 1-for-11 performance from 3-point range in the second half. Christon has three games of 21-plus points in his past five contests.

ABOUT VILLANOVA (19-2, 7-1): The Wildcats’ offense has been a model of efficiency this season, ranking 24th in the nation in points (80.9) and 20th in assists (16) per game. Four players average in double figures, led by James Bell’s 15.3 points and JayVaughn Pinkston’s 14.9. Bell hit five 3-pointers in Saturday’s 90-74 victory over Temple, and nine Villanova players scored four or more points as the Wildcats shot 52.5 percent from the field.

TRENDS:

* Musketeers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight vs. Big East.
* Wildcats are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 home games.
* Over is 5-0 in Musketeers last five road games.
* Over is 6-1 in Wildcats last seven games following a ATS win.

TIP-INS:

1. The Wildcats hit 12 3-pointers against Temple, their highest total since making 14 against Providence on Jan. 5.

2. Xavier leads the Big East in rebounding at 38.5; Villanova is second at 38.3.

3. Villanova leads the all-time series 16-4, but the teams have played just once since 1994, a 71-66 Xavier victory in 2006.

Game of the Day: Iowa State at Oklahoma State

Iowa State Cyclones at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-6)

Iowa State has lost 18 in a row at Oklahoma State, but the 18th-ranked Cyclones appear to be catching the Cowboys at just the right time. While Iowa State posted an impressive 81-75 win over Oklahoma on Saturday, No. 10 Oklahoma State suffered its second straight loss when struggling Baylor beat the Cowboys, 76-70. Forward Melvin Ejim averages a team-high 18.1 points along with 7.8 rebounds for the Cyclones, who head into Monday’s contest seeking its first win in Stillwater since 1988.

Oklahoma State has lost three of its last four, and coach Travis Ford says his team needs to regroup before facing the Cyclones. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, because it won't do any good,” Ford told reporters. “We have to weather the storm. These are tough times. Everyone goes through them. How we respond is important. For us to have success, we need to recover as a team. If we continue to play like individuals, we will continue to struggle.” The Cowboys have dominated the series against Iowa State in recent years, but the Cyclones posted an 11-point win last March in Ames.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY: Oklahoma State opened -6 (-110) and has remained steady.

POWER RANKINGS: Iowa State (-11.4) - Oklahoma State (-12.4) - Home Court (-3.0) = Oklahoma State -4.0

KEY INJURIES: Iowa State: N/A, Oklahoma State: Michael Cobbins (Out - Foot)

WHAT BOOKS SAY: "Tough to predict how people will bet because Marcus Smart's been awful offensively in past few games. But Iowa State has been dreadful versus the spread recently, failing to cover in six straight." - Mike Perry, Sportsbook.ag.

WHY BET IOWA STATE (16-4 SU, 9-9 ATS, 9-8-1 O/U): Forward Georges Niang scored a career-high 27 points on Saturday and is averaging 21.8 points and shooting 57 percent over his last four games. Freshman guard Monte Morris, who has a 21-to-4 assist-to-turnover ratio in eight Big 12 games, scored 12 points in his first career start against Oklahoma and could see more playing time ahead of struggling Naz Long. Guard DeAndre King, averaging 16.1 points, hopes to bounce back after matching a season-low with five points against the Sooners.

WHY BET OKLAHOMA STATE (16-5 SU, 8-9-0 ATS, 11-6 O/U): The Cowboys have struggled offensively in recent games, but they have a favorable matchup against the league’s worst scoring defense in Big 12 action. Iowa State is allowing an average of 78.2 points in league play, creating an opportunity for leading scorer Marcus Smart to get untracked after the player of the year candidate shot 3-of-14 and missed all seven of his 3-point attempts against Baylor. Forward Le’Bryan Nash has come on strong in league play, averaging 14.9 points on 51.2 percent shooting along with 5.6 rebounds.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 9-2-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
* Home team is 8-3-1 ATS in the last 12 meetings.
* Over is 12-5-1 in the last 18 meetings.
* Cyclones are 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in Oklahoma St.

Away favorites trend still a hot bet

Over the past seven days, away favorites have posted an 11-3 record against the spread. That equals a great winning percentage of 78.6 percent for bettors.

Monday provides a few opportunities to jump on this spot. The Portland Trail Blazers are 1.5-point faves at the Washington Wizards, the New York Knicks are 6.5-point faves at the Milwaukee Bucks, and the San Antonio Spurs are 4-point faves at the New Orleans Saints.

At the time of writing, there are four games off the board.

Blackhawks at Kings: What bettors need to know

Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings (-104, 5)

Although the Chicago Blackhawks have dropped five of their last six contests (1-2-3), they have a chance to get back on track and complete a three-game regular-season sweep on Monday when they visit the struggling Los Angeles Kings. Brandon Saad scored his third goal in two contests in Chicago's 2-1 shootout loss to San Jose on Saturday and netted the lone tally in the team's 1-0 triumph over Los Angeles on Dec. 30. Rookie Antti Rantta turned aside 26 shots in the latter contest to register his first career shutout and made 21 saves in a 3-1 victory over the Kings on Dec. 15.

Los Angeles' scoring troubles continued as it was shut out for the third time in five games and fell for the eighth time in nine outings (1-7-1) with a 2-0 setback to Philadelphia on Saturday. "You have to score to win," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "You can't get frustrated. You can't allow guys who are playing well to get frustrated. You have to see if they can work their way out of it."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NHLCA, WGN (Chicago), FSW (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (33-10-14): For all of its success, reigning Stanley Cup champion Chicago continues to struggle when games venture past regulation. The Blackhawks fell for the 14th time - and 10th in 11 outings - under such circumstances with their setback on Saturday. "You need to come up with a save if you want to win the game in a shootout," Corey Crawford told ESPN Chicago after permitting all three Sharks to convert in the bonus format.

ABOUT THE KINGS (30-21-6): Los Angeles has scored just three goals in the last six contests - and Anze Kopitar has been credited with them all. Jeff Carter has been cooled by the stretch after enjoying a four-game goal streak. Speaking of former Flyers, Mike Richards continues to sputter and has scored just once in his past 32 games.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Blackhawks are 1-5 in their last six road games.
* Under is 11-2-4 in Kings last 17 home games.
* Kings are 1-6 in their last seven vs. Central.

OVERTIME:

1. Chicago has killed off its last 22 consecutive short-handed opportunities.

2. Los Angeles has limped on its power play, converting just 1-of-25 chances over the past seven games.

3. The Kings have lost 15 of their last 20 contests (5-13-2) following an impressive 25-8-4 start to the season.

Any know the odds on the prop bet yesterday on 1st score being a safety?

NOPE 4000-1 although some one posted it was 6000-1 on page 9 from yesterday.. A quote from SBNATION "Super Bowl XLVIII is underway and we already have a huge upset. The Seattle Seahawks scored a safety on the Broncos first offensive play of the game. Bovada was offering odds of +4000 on Seahawks safety as the first score of the game. That means, if you bet $100 on a Seahawks safety, you just won $4,000."

40-1 you mean... 4000-1 would be $400,000 on a $100 wager
