#273 CAROLINA @ #274 PHILADELPHIA
TV: 8:30 PM EST, ESPN
Line: Eagles -7, Total: 48

The Philadelphia Eagles begin life without quarterback Nick Foles when they host the scuffling Carolina Panthers at Lincoln Financial Field on Monday night. Foles was injured late in the first quarter of last week's 31-21 win at Houston, giving the Eagles three quarters to acclimate Mark Sanchez to the starting role. Sanchez was solid against the Texans, and the team feels good about his chances for success against a Panthers team that has given up 30.7 points over its last seven games. "He's already ready, he's always focused and always prepared to make plays and that's part of his makeup," coach Chip Kelly said. "That's what we really liked about him."

"Mark can play, man," said Philadelphia wideout Jeremy Maclin, the reigning NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Sanchez completed a 52-yard pass to Maclin on his first play in nearly two years and finished 15 of 22 for 202 yards. "There's no question about it. He's also surrounded by a lot more talent than what he had in New York, so the sky's the limit." The Panthers, meanwhile, have only one win since September 14th but should benefit from the return of two key offensive linemen as Cam Newton looks to regain his consistency. “A lot of it is not just about him,” Carolina coach Ron Rivera said. “We can put it all on the quarterback and say it’s all about the quarterback, but this is a team game.”

•ABOUT THE PANTHERS (3-5-1 SU, 5-4-0 ATS): Left tackle Byron Bell and left guard Amini Silatolu are slated to return for Carolina, which ranks 20th in the league in passing yards and 26th in rushing yards. The Panthers have scored a total of 36 points in their last three games with Newton completing a career-worst 10 of 28 passes for 151 yards with one interception against the Saints. He's thrown one pick in each of the past five games and hasn't tossed a TD in his last two. "I've been in a race like this before, we all have," Rivera said. "It ends up being the team that comes back, that gets up and keeps fighting. The next thing you know, you're right in the thick of things." On the bright side, Luke Kuechly continues to lead the league in tackles with 97 and has an NFL-high 417 tackles since entering the league in 2012.

•ABOUT THE EAGLES (6-2 SU, 5-3-0 ATS): After Foles broke his collarbone, Sanchez threw two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions last Sunday in his first regular-season action since December 30th 2012. The focus of the offense will continue to be Maclin, who has 18 catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns in his last two games, and LeSean McCoy, whose four most productive games of the season have come in his last four outings. Philadelphia's biggest concern heading into Monday night's contest is likely how to replace linebacker DeMeco Ryans, who tore his Achilles tendon last weekend and will be replaced by a trio of relative unknowns in the middle of the Eagles' 3-4 scheme.

•PREGAME NOTES: Newton is 2-0 all-time on Monday Night Football with five touchdown passes and no interceptions, in addition to a pair of rushing scores.... The Eagles have won four of their last five meetings with the Panthers and five of seven in the all-time series.... Philadelphia's offensive line will welcome back Pro Bowl G Evan Mathis (knee), but veteran G Todd Herremans (biceps) was placed on injured reserve earlier this week.... The Eagles, fourth in both points (29.3) and total yards (409.3) per game, hope to maintain that production against a Carolina defense that has hardly resembled the unit that keyed a 12-4 finish last season. The Panthers have allowed 30.7 points per game since Week #3 - 31st in the league - while going 1-5-1. They've been particularly vulnerable against the run, allowing 134.8 per game in their last four.

•RESEARCH NOTES: Philadelphia has recorded a 12-2 ATS mark on Monday Night Football following a straight-up win when facing a team off a straight-up loss. On the flip side Carolina owns an 1-5-1 all-time ATS record in games off a loss when meeting an NFC East opponents following a win. The concern for Eagles’ fans however is the loss of Foles, but his 26th ranked 81.5 Quarterback Rating this season is not anything to lose sleep over. Not when Sanchez brings 68 National Football League career starts into the game, including a 1-0 SU and ATS mark in his only start against the Panthers. Finally, according to our database here at StatSystemsSports.net: NFL Monday Night home teams off back-to-back road games are 20-4 SU and 17-6-1 ATS since 1980 when facing an opponent off back-to-back home games, including a near-perfect 15-1 SU and ATS log versus a .666 or less opponent.

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach

Monday 10* (Top Play)

Play on Philadelphia

The Philadelphia Eagles host the Carolina Panthers Monday. “The Bulldog” breaks down his selection on Philadelphia with his Three-Factor Analysis: 1. The Panthers offense is a mess, producing an average of just 12 points per game over the past three weeks. Carolina’s run game is gaining ground and the passing game managed only 151 yards in the loss to New Orleans last week. That’s not enough to keep pace with the Eagles high-octane offense. 2. Mark Sanchez gets the start for the injured Nick Foles in Week 10. Oddsmakers may be discounting Philadelphia for its backup passer, however, Sanchez has plenty of experience and Chip Kelly’s offense is a system that doesn’t need an elite passer. The Eagles won’t skip a beat with a new arm under center. 3. Philadelphia has taken care of business inside Lincoln Financial Field, covering the spread in five of its last seven home stands. The Eagles have also come through on the Monday night stage, covering in nine of their last 13 Monday nighters.
Play on Philadelphia as a 10* Regular Selection Monday.

#701 NEW ORLEANS @ #702 CLEVELAND - 7:05 PM
The Cleveland Cavaliers look to build off their win over the Denver Nuggets when they welcome the New Orleans Pelicans to Quicken Loans Arena on Monday. LeBron James' second tour of duty with the Cavaliers has not started smoothly as they have lost three of their first five games while surrendering 100 or more points in each of their last four outings. Cleveland finished its Western road swing with a 1-2 record and hopes to turn its fortunes around with nine of its next 11 contests at home.

The Pelicans have won two games in a row following their impressive 100-99 victory over the reigning NBA champion San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. Anthony Davis' basket with 6.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner and New Orleans turns it attention to beating the Cavaliers for the seventh time in its last eight tries. "Any win in the NBA is a good win," coach Monty Williams told reporters. "When you beat the defending champions on their floor, it feels good."

#703 UTAH @ #704 INDIANA - 7:05 PM
Few matchups better display how quickly fortunes can change in the NBA than Monday's clash between the Indiana Pacers and the Utah Jazz. The Jazz aim for a second straight road win and look to get to .500 for the first time since the end of the 2012-13 season when they visit Indiana, which has dropped six straight. Utah got 10 straight points down the stretch from Gordon Hayward in a 97-96 win at Detroit on Sunday for its third victory, which it didn't pick up until Nov. 30 last season.

Indiana erased most of a 22-point deficit last time out before losing 97-90 to visiting Washington. After losing star Paul George to a broken leg this summer, the hits keep coming for the Pacers, who also are without starters David West and George Hill and key reserves Rodney Stuckey and C.J. Watson because of injuries, while star center Roy Hibbert and reserve C.J. Miles are day-to-day with ailments of their own. The Pacers swept two meetings last season and have won four of the past five against Utah.

#705 ATLANTA @ #706 NEW YORK - 7:35 PM
The New York Knicks knew it was going to be a process learning a new offense under coach Derek Fisher, and the early results have been uninspiring. The Knicks will try to snap a four-game slide when they host the Atlanta Hawks in the second of a home-and-home set on Monday. New York looked as though it had found a rhythm on offense in the first half at Atlanta on Saturday before falling off the pace after the break in a 103-96 loss.

The Hawks have yet to win on the road but managed to pull out Saturday’s triumph despite a slow night for center Al Horford, who was enduring his first back-to-back since returning from a torn pectoral muscle. Atlanta made up the difference with 27 points from Kyle Korver and some clutch 3-point shooting while outscoring the Knicks 55-35 in the second half. “It’s early in the season but it seems like when teams start to apply pressure to us in the second half we’re just kind of backing up and just allowing them to do that rather than just going out and playing our game,” Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony told reporters.

#707 DETROIT @ #708 CHICAGO - 8:05 PM
A pair of outspoken coaches will look for bounce-back efforts from their teams when the Chicago Bulls host the Detroit Pistons on Monday. The Bulls drew the ire of coach Tom Thibodeau with a "low-energy" first half in a 106-101 loss to visiting Boston on Saturday, snapping a four-game winning streak. Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy was equally aggravated by his team's inability to finish strong in a 97-96 loss at Utah on Sunday.

The loss to the Celtics was a shocker for a Bulls team that seemingly had established itself among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. The Pistons, who are beginning a four-game road trip, have a long way to go to get back to that level, and it showed in the fourth quarter against the Jazz, as Detroit couldn't stop Gordon Hayward or knock down a jumper when it needed one. The Bulls won three of four meetings last season and have taken 21 of 23 against the Pistons dating to 2009.

#709 SAN ANTONIO @ #710 LA CLIPPERS - 10:35 PM
The defending champion San Antonio Spurs are off to a slow start offensively and will be tested on a four-game road trip beginning with a visit to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday. The Spurs were held under 100 points for the fourth time in five games in Saturday’s 100-99 home setback to the New Orleans Pelicans and hit the road having dropped two straight. The Clippers are still finding their rhythm as well but are coming off a win over Portland.

San Antonio has been unhappy with the schedule makers due to a light slate over the first week before a barrage of back-to-back games, and the players are feeling the effects. “Some guys' bodies are hurting a little bit,” guard Danny Green told reporters. “… We're not in the greatest shape. We're just not in our normal team rhythm, our chemistry." Los Angeles was in a funk of its own before a strong second half on Saturday night turned the team’s fortunes.
