Bank Shots: NBA's weekly betting news and notes

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best - and worst - basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Jan. 5-11

Hottest ATS - Toronto Raptors (2-2 SU, 4-0 ATS)

Sound familiar? The Raptors have been by far the best cover play since the end of the Christmas break, going a perfect 9-0 ATS as they continue to impress since trading Rudy Gay to Sacramento. After looking strong in narrow losses at Miami and Indiana - far and away the two strongest teams in the Eastern Conference - Toronto returned to its winning ways with runaway home victories over the Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets. Expect the good times to continue this week, with home games against Milwaukee and Minnesota and a road game versus Boston on the docket.

Coldest ATS - Philadelphia 76ers (0-4 SU, 0-4 ATS)

After putting together one of the unlikeliest four-game road winning streaks in the NBA this season - rattling off victories against the Lakers, Denver, Sacramento and Portland over a seven-day span - the 76ers crashed back to Earth last week. Despite getting points in all four games, Philadelphia fell victim to its sieve-like defense, losing all four contests by double digits while surrendering an average of 113.3 points per contest. The 76ers will look to bounce back this week, hosting the Charlotte Bobcats and Miami Heat before hitting the road to face the Chicago Bulls.

Best Over play - Detroit Pistons (2-3 SU, 4-1 O/U)

It was a busy week for the Pistons, who were on both ends of some of the more entertaining games of the week. After dropping three straight games to open the stretch - surrendering 112 points to both the Memphis Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors - The Pistons averaged 112 points in consecutive victories over the Philadelphia 76ers and the Phoenix Suns. Detroit will now enjoy a much-needed rest, with six days between its triumph over the Suns and the opener of back-to-back games against the Utah Jazz and the Washington Wizards.

Best Under play - New York Knicks (4-0 SU, 4-0 O/U)

A team boasting Carmelo Anthony, J.R. Smith and Andrea Bargnani will never be thought of as a defensive juggernaut - making last week's numbers positively boggling. New York played all four of its games under the total, with all but one of those games falling more than 10 points below. New York has struggled on offense all season, and enjoyed only a modest boost in that area last week; the big impact came on defense, where the Knicks held all four opponents below 93 points. New York has a four-game week ahead, with home games against Phoenix and the Clippers and road dates in Charlotte and Indiana.

Surveying the schedule:

The Denver Nuggets have surged back above the .500 mark on the strength of a five-game winning streak that has renewed optimism in Colorado. Denver faces an interesting test over its next five games, with all five opponents having beaten the Nuggets in their previous meeting earlier in the season. That includes a relatively tame three-game schedule this week, with road games against the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors preceding a home date with Cleveland.

For the week of Jan. 5-11

Hot Team

New York Islanders (3-0 SU)

Every so often, the Islanders show the promise hockey fans have come to expect out of a team boasting an elite talent in John Tavares and a handful of complementary options. Despite wallowing at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division, New York has been on a roll with three straight victories - a 7-3 home triumph over the Dallas Stars followed by impressive wins in Toronto and Colorado. With six victories in their last seven games overall, the Islanders have caught fire just as they enter a difficult week featuring four road games - highlighted by a visit to Dallas, where the Stars will be looking for revenge.

Cold team

Toronto Maple Leafs (0-3 SU)

Panic buttons are being slammed all over the greater Toronto area as the Maple Leafs continue their slide down the Eastern Conference standings. Looking to bounce back from a 7-1 thumping at the hands of the New York Rangers, the Maple Leafs couldn't muster much of anything last week, falling to the Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals. Toronto will be desperately looking to bounce back with four games this coming week - including home dates with the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres and rival Montreal Canadiens.

Best Over play

Edmonton Oilers (3-0 O/U)

The Oilers may be headed back to the head of the NHL draft lottery, but their games have had plenty of scoring. Edmonton has played the Over in 10 of its last 11 games, including all three it played last week. The Oilers opened the stretch with a 5-3 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning, followed it up with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Blues and capped it with a stunning 4-3 overtime win over Pittsburgh. With the offense rolling and the defense still as porous as ever, the Oilers kick off a four-game road trip against Chicago before visiting Dallas, Minnesota and Vancouver.

Best Under play

Chicago Blackhawks (0-3 O/U)

The defending Stanley Cup champions came into the week as one of the best Over plays through the opening half of the season, but saw the well run dry in three straight losses. Chicago dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to visiting San Jose, fell 3-2 three nights later to the New York Rangers and capped the winless stretch with a 2-1 overtime loss in Montreal. The Blackhawks are 1-5 O/U in their last six games, but with a relentless offense led by Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, they likely won't be held down for long. Chicago kicks off a four-game homestand with games this week against Edmonton, Colorado and Anaheim.

Surveying the schedule:

The Winnipeg Jets find themselves slipping out of the playoff picture thanks to a five-game losing skid that prompted the club to fire head coach Claude Noel on Sunday morning. Only the Flames and Oilers have fewer points among West teams, and Winnipeg's 14 regulation victories are also the third-fewest in the conference. The Jets will have an opportunity to put more space between themselves and their prairie cousins, facing both Calgary and Edmonton this week. Phoenix is also on the docket.

Kansas at Iowa State: What bettors need to know

Kansas Jayhawks at Iowa State Cyclones (OFF)

Less than 48 hours after its first loss of the season, No. 7 Iowa State will face another tough test when it heads to No. 20 Kansas in a matchup of Big 12 contenders. The biggest question mark is the health of Iowa State’s star DeAndre Kane, who injured his ankle in the Cyclones’ loss to Oklahoma on Saturday. X-rays came back negative on Kane, but the Big 12’s assist leader told the Ames Tribune: “It’s throbbing — It’ll probably swell up on the plane ride back home … We’ll see how it feels in the next two days.”

On the other side, Jayhawks phenom Andrew Wiggins appears to be more comfortable than ever. The freshman scored 22 in Kansas’ blowout win over Kansas State, and told the Kansas City Star he feels like he is finally settling into a level of calm. “I think I’m just having fun,” Wiggins said.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: The line and total are currently off the board.

ABOUT KANSAS (11-4, 7-8 ATS): While Wiggins gets the majority of the attention, two players who should not be forgotten on Bill Self’s squad are Wayne Selden and Joel Embiid. Selden has come on of late, scoring 20-plus points in the Jayhawks’ two conference victories and bumping his average into double figures at 10.3. Like Wiggins, the seven-foot Embiid also continues to get more comfortable, and he's averaging 10.5 points and 7.3 rebounds.

ABOUT IOWA STATE (14-1, 9-4 ATS): The Cyclones might learn the hard way just how important Kane is to an offense that ranks sixth in the nation in scoring at 86.7 points and first in assists at 18.9. If Kane, who is in the top 10 in the Big 12 in scoring, assists, rebounding and field goal percentage, can’t go, freshman Monte Morris, who has averaged 21.7 minutes, will get the start. Up front, the Hawkeyes are paced by Melvin Ejim (18 points, 7.1 rebounds), Georges Niang (15.3 points, 4.1 rebounds) and Dustin Hogue (12.3 points, 9.3 rebounds).

TRENDS:

* Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Kansas is 12-1 ATS in its last 13 versus the Big 12.
* Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in its last five games following an ATS loss.
* Over is 20-5-1 in Iowa State's last 26 home games.

TIP-INS:

1. Iowa State is one of seven schools with three players averaging at least 15 points.

2. Kansas has outrebounded 13 of 15 opponents this season.

Australian Open Men's action report: Bettors steer clear of Murray

The 2014 tennis season unofficially gets underway with the first Grand Slam event of the season – the Australian Open – kicking off this weekend.

Action has been flowing in on the Aussie Open futures all winter but the pace is picking up the tournament starting Sunday in Melbourne. We talk with Aron Black of bet365.com about the betting patterns on the Men’s draw and which players are drawing the most money.

Popular plays

It’s no surprise that Novak Djokovic (-111) is drawing the majority of the outright winner money, coming off a 2013 title in Melbourne. He was priced as low as +125 last year but was quick bet off that price. The other player taking his share of the action is 2009 Australian Open winner Rafael Nadal, who has climbed in price thanks to the action on Djokovic.

“Nadal has been getting steady play at the price of +275 for some time,” says Black. “But given the shortening of Djokovic’s price, he was +225 earlier in year, the drift is offset by Novak shortening.”

Surprise action

A few players are seeing more action than oddsmakers expected. Among those underdogs making moves on the outright winner board are Lleyton Hewitt (100/1) and Ernests Gulbis (150/1). Hewitt, home favorite at Melbourne, has a loyal following of bettors Down Under.

“Mostly action from our Australian customer base taking the hometown Aussie player,” Black says of the money on Hewitt. “But given the ‘long in the tooth’ status he has, it will be a surprise if he gets past the second or third rounds.”

No love

There are a few standouts not drawing their usual share of the action heading into the Australian Open. Black says recent injury issues have tennis bettors treating Andy Murray (8/1) with care after his recent injuries.

“It’s understandable that not a lot of folks are putting faith in him, but the action he does have is extremely low,” Black says of Murray. “Not even the British faithful are backing him for anything to speak of.”

Another player surprising books by his lack of outright money is Juan Martin Del Potro (12/1). Black is shocked since the hardcourt surface at Rod Laver suits his hard-serving style best.

Australian Open Women's action report: No love for Azarenka

Popular plays

Serena Williams is once again the popular pick to win the Australian Open, despite failing to make the final the last three years. Williams, who has overcome recent injury issues to win the French and U.S. Open last season, won the 2014 Brisbane International and improved on her 22-match winning streak at the tune-up event.

“Not a surprise to see Serena getting the vast bulk of the action,” Black tells Covers. “She had been available at -110 earlier in year and then shortened to -120 but the popularity of the action has seen a move across the industry to shorter prices, still being backed at -138. Given how she has started the season, looks a worthy play at the price.”

Another women’s favorite drawing her share of the action is Na Li (10/1), who lost in last year’s final to Victoria Azarenka.

Surprise action

Tennis bettors are taking a flyer on rising star Simona Halep (50/1) at the Aussie Open as well as 2011 Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova (18/1), who has only gone as far as the semifinals in Melbourne back in 2012. She’s currently No. 6 in the World.

“Although she was a top player when she won Wimbledon, she has been largely on the fringe of majors since, but sees solid support forcing the move to +1,800,” Black says of Kvitova. “Halep is on the rise, but hasn’t done too much on the big stage and has tough draw. She has seen more support than expected for a 50/1 shot.”

No love

The betting markets has shunned two-time defending Australian Open champ Azarenka (+450), who has a rough draw and a possible three meetings with players ranked inside the Top 5.

“Normally, Azarenka sees action in any major for the last two or three years, but for this Aussie Open there’s not much to speak of in terms of action on her,” says Black.

Another big-name player surprising books with her lack of action is Maria Sharapova (10/1), who won the Australian Open in 2008 and was beaten by Azarenka in the 2012 final.

Australian Open betting: Men to watch in Melbourne

The 2014 Australian Open gets underway on Monday—or on Sunday night for those in the United States who are willing to brave an ungodly time difference to follow the action. On the Men’s side, usual suspects Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are clearly in a class above the rest.

Favorites: Novak Djokovic (Even), Rafael Nadal (+250)

Djokovic has not gone down Down Under since 2010. That’s right. The second-ranked Serb has won three consecutive Australian Open titles, twice beating Andy Murray and once outlasting Nadal in a five-set epic. What’s not to like about his chances this time around?

Djokovic ended 2014 on a ridiculous 24-match winning streak - the entire stretch of which came on hard courts. During the run, he got the best of Nadal once, Roger Federer twice, and Juan Martin Del Potro twice en route to titles in Beijing, Shanghai, Paris, and the season-ending event in London.

At the same time, it would be foolish to discount Nadal. Djokovic may have dominated last season’s final two months, but it was Nadal who turned in the best overall campaign. Despite missing the Aussie Open due to knee problems and losing in the first round at Wimbledon, the Spaniard still finished the year No. 1 in the world with room to spare.

Not only did he pocket an eighth career French Open title, but Nadal also played his way to three straight summer hard-court triumphs in Montreal, Cincinnati, and at the U.S. Open. So much for being a clay-court specialist.

A word of caution about Nadal, however.Murray, Federer, and Del Potro are also in a brutal top half of the draw. The top seed could face Del Potro as early as the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Djokovic’s path on the other side should be relatively routine compared to his biggest rival.

Underdog to watch: Juan Martin Del Potro (+1000)

Since Marat Safin won the Australian Open in 2005, only one man other than Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, and Federer has won a Grand Slam title—Del Potro at the 2009 U.S. Open. More than four seasons later, the fifth-ranked Argentine is armed with a clean bill of health and looking like a real contender. However, Del Potro has never advanced past the quarterfinals in Melbourne and Nadal stands in his way of doing it this time.

Live long shot: Stanislas Wawrinka (+3000)

Better late than never to have a breakout season. Wawrinka did just that in 2013, playing arguably the match of the year against Djokovic in the fourth round of the Australian Open and testing Djokovic in another five-setter in his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal appearance at the U.S. Open. The Swiss is off to fine start this year having secured a hard-court title in Chennai.

Australian Open betting: Women to watch in Melbourne

Known as “the Happy Slam,” the Australian Open begins next week. The favorite is obvious, but let’s take a look at several plays that could bring happiness to bettors over the upcoming fortnight.

Favorites: Serena Williams (-150), Victoria Azarenka (+450)

Something will have to give at Melbourne Park over the next two weeks. Williams is the undisputed best player in the world, but Azarenka has been the woman to beat at the Australian Open.

Reasserting her dominance after a disappointing performance Down Under, Williams won two of the last three Grand Slams in 2013 (French Open and U.S. Open). The 32-year-old American ended last season on an 18-match winning streak and she extended the current mark to 22 by recently prevailing in Brisbane, where she beat Azarenka and Maria Sharapova in the process.

Azarenka is 28-6 lifetime at the Aussie Open and is the two-time defending champion. She also finished runner-up in each of the past two U.S. Opens, meaning the last four hard-court majors have featured Azarenka in the final. A No. 2 ranking puts the Belarusian on the opposite side of the draw from Serena, but her quarter also includes Agnieszka Radwanksa, Caroline Wozniacki, and Sloane Stephens.

Underdog to watch: Maria Sharapova (+1,000)

It’s hard to call Sharapova an underdog, but that’s the case for three reasons: 1. Serena is Serena, 2. Azarenka is an absolute force at the Happy Slam, and 3. Sharapova played only one match following last summer’s U.S. Open due to a shoulder injury.

The Russian is looking to turn things around under new coach Sven Groeneveld and the partnership got off to decent start in Brisbane. Sharapova won two matches and a straight-set loss to Williams and saw the second set go to 11-9 in a tiebreaker.

While Serena slugs her way through the top half of the bracket, Sharapova and Azarenka are on a collision course for a semifinal in which no love would be lost between two familiar foes.

Live long shot: Caroline Wozniacki (+6000)

Wozniacki, a former World No. 1, was borderline hopeless in 2012 and 2013. After reaching the quarterfinals Down Under two years ago, she failed to make it past the fourth round in the next seven slams and she lost prior to the third round on three occasions. Nonetheless, 2014 could signal a fresh start. Wozniacki’s personal life is in fine shape as she got engaged to Rory McIlroy on New Year’s Day. She has also brought in Thomas Hogstedt, Sharapova’s old coach, as her new boss.

NBA betting: Toronto Raptors red-hot ATS

The Toronto Raptors are becoming one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference winning 9 of their past 12 games. Even more impressive is their red-hot run against the spread, which they have covered nine games in a row.

After their 96-80 win over division rival Brooklyn Saturday, the Raptors are now the third best bet in the NBA at a mark of 21-14 ATS. The Raptors have also become a solid Under play. They have gone Under the game total in seven of their past 10 games.

The Raptors host the 7-29 (12-24 ATS) Milwaukee Bucks in Toronto Monday. The Bucks are 0-5 SU and ATS in their past five games and are 1-4 O/U in that same span.
