WUNDERDOG NCAAF PICKS

Game: Tulsa at Tulane (Friday 9/04 8:00 PM Eastern)
Pick: 4 units on Tulsa -13.5 (-110) (risk 4 to win 3.6)

The Green Wave have now completed their sixth-consecutive losing season, and last year was perhaps their worst at 2-10. What made it worse was the way that they finished the season with eight straight losses. The offense has some key components back from last year, but how much better is this team going to get? They gained just 221.2 yards a game last year, scoring just 16.7 points per game. In their final two games they were outscored 101-13. The Green Wave defense remains in turmoil after allowing 40+ in six of their last eight games. For the third straight year, this team will have a new defensive coordinator, so anyone that has been around here for three years must be completely confused. Tulane is just 54-78 ATS as an underdog over the past fifteen years. Tulsa has become a constant figure in the Bowls with four straight appearances and 38 wins in the last four years. The Golden Hurricane have led the NCAA in total offense the last two years with their hurry-up tactics and no huddle offense. Despite a different offensive coordinator, I don't expect things to change much. All three of their talented wideouts are back, so expect this team to score again. Tulsa has the potential for a third straight Conference USA Title, and should be the better team by far on both sides of the ball and they'll get it done on the road here.

CONGROVE COMPUTER RANKINGS

Friday, September 4

Tulsa (-14) by 25.22 over TULANE - The computer likes the Golden Hurricane by 11+ points more than the oddsmakers. Gone are record-setting QB David Johnson (7th round NFL Draft, Pittsburgh), career rushing leader Tarrion Adams (3,651 yards), and co-offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn (hired by Auburn). Together, they helped the Golden Hurricane average a nation's-best 569.86 yards per game, and score an average of 47.21 points. But what's to worry about? Tulane has lost all 4 CUSA games to Tulsa by at least 24 points.

The Gold Sheet

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

*Tulsa 45 - TULANE 24—Presence of new QB(s) no reason to expect Tulsa’s offense (more than 40 ppg & 500 ypg in each of last two seasons!) to suddenly turn tepid, not with dual-threat Texas transfer Kinne, rifle-armed jr. Bower (originally at BYU), and even elusive true frosh Beaver (spurned Michigan) all strongly contending for privilege of piloting bright Hurricane HC Graham’s juggernaut. Tulane regains top weapons RB A. Anderson & WR J. Williams after their 2008 injuries. But, after being emasculated for nearly 500 YR in LY’s meeting, tough for Green Wave defense to regain its manhood without all hands on deck (see Special Ticker). CABLE TV—ESPN

The Gold Sheet Extra

TULSA at TULANE (Friday, September 4)...Tulsa has won and
covered handily last 4 meetings, all by 24 points or more. Todd
Graham teams have also won and covered their last 3 openers with
ease (‘06 at Rice, last two years at Tulsa). Wave really faded down
stretch in ‘08, dropping last 4 vs. number as well as 7 of last 9. Tulane
also no covers its last 4 at home in ‘08. Tech edge-Tulsa, based on
series trends.

Tulsa over TULANE by 14

You would think Tulsa’s 4-0 SU and ATS series mark, in which they
have outscored the Green Wave, 181-49, would send us straight to
the window. Throw in the fact that Tulane is a Phyllis Diller-like 2-32
ATS in their last 34 home games when they allow 35 or more points
and you can see why we might not even pass go. But the truth of
the matter is there are better games on the board. While there’s no
denying the Golden Hurricane can light it up (44 PPG under Todd
Graham), they did lose OC Gus Malzahn to Auburn and are breaking
in a new QB in Jacon Bower. Yes, the hosts are just 5-13 ATS as doubledigit
HD’s, but we’ll counter that with Tulsa’s 3-10-1 ATS log in its fi rst
lined game. Like the last pick in gym class, we’ll be riding the bench
this afternoon in the Superdome.

Lady Luck: Today's WNBA best bets

Indiana Fever at Detroit Shock (-2.5, 150.5)

Have the Fever caught a cold? The league’s best team (according to the standings) has dropped four of five games including Wednesday’s showdown with the West-leading Mercury.

Of course it wasn’t a fair fight. The Fever were missing their leading scorer Katie Douglas because of a sore ankle. Her status is day-to-day and it’s unclear whether she’ll be ready to go for Friday’s game against the Shock.

Mercury coach Corey Gaines says the difference is night and day for Indiana without Douglas in the lineup.

“She stretches the defense a little bit,” Gaines told the Indianapolis Star. “She handles the ball a lot. But hopefully, we’ll meet again and we’ll see.”

Indiana won’t get any favors from the surging Shock. Detroit, which started out the year 2-7, has won five of its last six, including a win Tuesday over the Mercury.

The seats will be packed for this matchup. Detroit handed out 2000 free tickets to the public in hopes of getting some fans interested in the club again.

Pick: Shock

Atlanta Dream at Sacramento Monarchs (+1, 170)

At 11-20 and with just four games left on the schedule, you would probably guess that the Monarchs would be thinking about the offseason already.

But two wins in a row has put the club just 2.5 games back of San Antonio for the final playoff seed in the West.

Monarchs coach John Whisenant knows his team’s chances are slight, but he also knows his group won’t give up.

“We’ve got a shot, we’ve got a chance, with all the problems and issues we’ve had.”

The problem Whisenant is talking about is his team’s lack of depth at point guard. Backup point guard Kara Lawson is out for the season with tendinitis and starting PG Ticha Penicheiro is fighting through a sore left hamstring.

“I want to help the team so I’m really frustrated,” Penicheiro told the Sacramento Bee. “This is the most important part of the season and we’ve still got a shot at the playoffs and I’m just frustrated that this has happened.”

She only played four minutes in Saturday’s win over the Fever because of the injury.

Kristin Haynie, who was acquired in a trade a few weeks back, has been doing the heavy lifting at the point. Look for the Dream to exploit the Monarchs’ short guard rotation.

Pick: Atlanta
