4-Unit Play. Take New York Mets (-165) over Washington (7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
Note: This is our Game of the Week. I had to move the Units down because overnight this line move 15-20 cents. If it hits -176 or higher I would consider just the run line.

The Mets are a mess, but I think desperation will sink in today and New York will respond. New York is 14-2 in John Maine’s last 16 games against a divisional opponent and 14-5 in his last 19 road starts. The Mets are 23-9 on the road against a team with a losing record and after getting bombed last night I think they bounce back with a key victory. The Nationals are just 4-12 after scoring five or more runs in their previous game. Maine is 10-4 with an extra day of rest and has a career ERA of 2.85 in RFK Stadium. He is ready to give New York the big performance it needs.

3-Unit Play. Take ‘Over’ 8.5 New York Mets at Washington (7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
We have Larry Vanover behind the dish and a pair of hurlers just aching to get lit up. Vanover is 21-12 against the total this year and the number on this game hasn’t moved an inch. The ‘over’ has hit in three straight in this series and is 6-2-1 in the Nats’ last nine games. The Mets bullpen has been a wreck and Joel Hanrahan has a 5.68 ERA in his last three outings. Also, John Maine has been shaky over the past two months, surrendering six runs or more in four of his past eight outings (6.85 ERA). The Nats have been swinging good bats and the Mets are desperate. I think this one sails over late when the Mets bullpen gives up a couple runs in the middle innings. Prediction: Mets 8, Nationals 5.

3-Unit Play. Take Detroit (-125) over Cleveland (7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
I have a feeling the Tigers will close the season on a tear because they are finally healthy. That, and I don't trust Jake Westbrook.

2.5-Unit Play. Take ‘Under’ 9.5 Boston at Toronto (7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
We have Easy Ed Rapuano behind the plate, and his expansive strike zone should benefit both pitchers. John Lester and A.J. Burnett have both been stellar over their past three starts, posting a 3.24 and 1.96 ERA, respectively. The ‘under’ is 17-7 in Toronto’s last 24 games after a win, 9-2 in Boston’s last 11 on turf, 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these teams, and 19-10 in Rapuano’s games this year.

2.5-Unit Play. Take ‘Under’ 9.0 (+100) Texas at Minnesota (8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
Again, this is a play with a foundation on the ump. Jeff Nelson is 4-12 against the total this year, with an average of 5.94 runs scored in his 16 games. Texas and Minnesota don’t exactly light it up on offense, so we have excellent value. The last time that Kevin Millwood and Carlos Silva each faced their opponent they surrendered just one run in seven innings.

2-Unit Play. Take Cincinnati (+120) over Chicago Cubs (8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
Aaron Harang has been our horse all year, and we’re not going to go away from him now. Harang is 7-2 in his career against the Cubs, including 3-0 at Wrigley. The Reds are 14-2 in his last 16 road starts, 4-0 in his last four starts in Wrigley, and 4-1 in his last five overall against Chicago. Also, Cincy is 4-1 in Carlos Zambrano’s last five starts against them.

2-Unit Play. Take Toronto (-115) over Boston (7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18)
The Blue Jays are 25-6 at home against a left-handed starter. They are an automatic play against a southpaw, and with a resurgent A.J. Burnett on the bump I think the Blue Jays once again take down the Sox.

That's it for today. Good luck.

GAME #1

Game: Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado (3:05 PM Eastern)
Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers +107

The Dodgers have quietly gone 17-9 in their last 26 games, and it is because of their pitching, as they have held opponents to four runs or less in 20 of those 26 games. One of the reasons has been the conversion of Chad Billingsley into the starting rotation. Billingsley was roughed up before he got comfortable, and has now won four of his last five starts while pitching to a 1.64 ERA. The Rockies rode a stretch of winning 13 of 15 Francis' starts, but have since gone 3-4, but Francis' struggles began long before that. He has pitched to a 5.30 ERA in his last 16 starts, and has not worked beyond five innings in seven of them. The Rockies have won 20 of Francis' 31 starts, but it isn't what he has done, it is the support he has gotten. The Rockies have averaged 6.65 runs a game in those starts and three runs a game in the 11 losses with him on the hill. Billingsley will keep that total down today, and the Dodgers will take GAME 1 of this doubleheader

Game: Los Angeles Dodger @ Colorado Rockies - Tuesday September 18, 2007 1:05 pm
Pick: 1 unit(s) MONEYLINE: Colorado Rockies -188 (Play of the Day)

Jeff Francis is on a bounce-back and I want to make sure I am on that early bandwagon today. The Dodgers overall have a very weak offense and it has shown time and time again and I am glad they come off a win, as I do not see them getting the win as they hit Coors today. Francis is likely irritated from hsi 20+ ERA performance in his last start, has a 2.7, 2.35 and 3 ERA against the Dodgers as that is all the LA team is capable of doing against his over-powering pitching. Francis returns home where he has a 4.28 ERA and the line reflects a lot of reflect for Billingsley - which is deserved - but Billingsley has faced San Fran,San Diego and San Fran in his last 3 starts, please, those are JV offenses. Let him go on the road and face the Rockies at Coors where he had a 8.31 ERA last time, heck even at L.A. he had 6.77 and 5.40 ERA when he faced the Rockies. Billingsley gets rocked, Francis puts out ace caliber stuff today, the Rockies are 6-0 following a team loss in the previous game, the Dodgers are 1-5 when Billingsley starts with 5 days rest and the Rockies are 22-7 in Francis's last 29 home starts.

Game: Florida Marlins @ Atlanta Braves - Tuesday September 18, 2007 7:35 pm
Pick: 3 unit(s) TOTAL: Over 11 (-104) (Normal)

If Smoltz/Kim can go over, and well over at nearly 20 runs, then why can Seddon/Reyes not go over. Braves and Marlins have gotten together for games with plenty of runs and fireworks scored and I don't trust Reyes in putting together back to back quality starts and Seddon gave up 7 runs in just a few innings against the Nats, well, have fun with the Braves today. Reyes is a 6 ERA type of pitcher and look for the Marlins to be a bit irritated from yesterday's loss despite hitting Smoltz fairly well and to come out and put some runs here. Over is 5-0 in the Marlins last 5 as a dog, over is 12-3 when the Marlins face a pitcher with a WHIP of 1.30 or higher and the over is 7-1 in the last 8 meetings between these 2 teams.

Game: Cincinnati Reds @ Chicago Cubs - Tuesday September 18, 2007 8:05 pm
Pick: 3 unit(s) TOTAL: Over 11 (-111) (Normal)

Keep an eye out for it. Harang is horrible against the Cubs, Zambrano does not have a good track record against the Reds, the Reds come off an irritating loss yesterday and these bullpens are highly questionable. All that figures in with the public giving both these pitchers too much respect, and watch this game soar over in the middle of the 5th inning likely and quite possibly sooner. Harang has given up 12 runs in his last 12 innings against the Cubs and Carlos has given up 19 hits, 12 runs in 11 innings at home at Wrigley against the Reds. Saddle-up, the over is 11-2 in the last 13 games for the Reds against a winning team on the road, as it has been one of the best trends in baseball for some time, the over is 6-0 when Harang starts as a dog and the over is 4-0 in the last 4 meetings in Chicago. </TD></TR><TR><TD style="BORDER-BOTTOM: #000000 1px solid"> </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>:dancefool

Big Al Mcmordie

At 7:05 pm, our selection is on the Detroit Tigers with Justin Verlander over Cleveland. Last night, we used Cleveland as our AL Central Game of the Month, and the Indians rewarded us with a 6-5 win. That moved the Tribe's lead over the Tigers to 5.5 games. With under two weeks remaining, this game is a 'must-win' for Jim Leyland's crew. And, with Verlander on the hill, they will get it. He's 17-5 on the year, with a 3.47 ERA. And over his last four starts, he's been nothing short of brilliant, allowing just three runs and 23 hits in 28 2/3 innings (while striking out 26). Jake Westbrook will get the ball for Cleveland and he's 5-9 this year, and hasn't won in his last three starts, compiling a 4.34 ERA and, even worse, a 1.71 WHIP. In his career, Westbrook is a dismal 4-8 with a 6.53 ERA vs. the Tigers. Take Detroit. Good luck, as always, Al McMordie

Game: Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics Sep 18 2007 10:05PM
Prediction: over
Reason: The Mariners probably aren't going to make the playoffs this season. They won for the fourth time in six games last night in Oakland (4-0) but previously had a 2-15 stretch that likely ended any chance they had at the postseason. Seattle (79-70) is 6 1/2 games behind the wild card-leading New York Yankees with 13 games remaining. Meanwhile, Oakland (74-78) needs to win eight of its final 10 games to extend its streak of winning seasons to nine. The A's haven't finished below .500 since 1998, when they were 74-88. Clearly, there will NOT be a "playoff atmosphere" at McAfee Coliseum tonight. Seattle's Jeff Weaver (6-12, 6.34 ERA) will look to rebound from one of the worst starts of his career. The struggling right-hander recorded only four outs Thursday against Tampa Bay and allowed five runs, six hits and two walks! Weaver's in another of his famous slumps. He began the season 0-6 with a 14.32 ERA. After a stint on the DL, he returned to allow three ERs or less in EIGHT of his first nine starts. He went 4-0 (3.14 ERA) to open August but over his last four starts, has allowed 31 hits and 20 ERs in just 13.2 innings for a 13.17 ERA. Oakland's Chad Gaudin has had "two seasons" in '07. He went 8-3 with a 2.81 ERA in 18 first-half starts (A's were 13-5) but has gone 3-7 with a 6.81 ERA in 13 post-break starts (A's are 4-9). Gaudin has allowed five ERs or more in EIGHT of those 13 starts! Terrific Tuesday Total on Sea/Oak Over.

Blank Check winner ...

BLANK CHECK ANGELS RUN LINE - The Angels' offense is absolutely on fire, and on the night after them and the Devil Rays combined to use 12 pitchers in a 10-7 win, I have to look at the Halos here, and lay the run and a half.

First of all, after last night's loss the Devil Rays are 0-3 at Angel Stadium this season and 7-27 since the 2000 season. Second, in looking at who is toeing the rubber tonight, it's easy to see who has the durable pitcher on its side, as John Lackey aims for win No. 17 tonight. It's almost a sure thing that we'll get at least seven innings from him.

In his career, Lackey is 7-1 with a 2.51 ERA and two shutouts against this team, while he's allowed just 18 runs in 64-2/3 innings against the Rays. He's 5-0 with a 1.42 ERA in six career starts at home against them. The right-hander has won five straight starts against Tampa since 2004 – over which time he's allowed a meager nine runs in 38-2/3 frames. And since he's 0-1 in his last three starts, this is the perfect opportunity to give his team a boost.

Next on our list of factors is the Angels have won 11 of their last 14 against Tampa, and clearly has the edge with the way they're batting recently. Last night's win shrunk the Angels' magic number for clinching the division to five.

One final note in this blowout win, the Devil Rays have been blasted by West Coast foes this season, losing by a combined final of 105-84 when visiting Anaheim, Oakland, Colorado, Arizona and Seattle. The Halos' contribution in the pounding is a 30-11 showing.
