DAY GAME
METS
As I said yesterday, this team is on fire right now and I will ride them again today.

They hammered the Reds pitching staff for 11 runs and now get this kid Shearn.

In his two starts this year Shearn has allowed 6 runs in 11 innings but truthfully I believe this gets ugly facing the Mets.

Maine comes off 7 rock solid innings against the Braves giving up just 1 earned in getting the win raising his road mark to 9-2 with a 3.24 ERA.

Considering how hot the Mets bats are right now, this is a great spot to jump on the boys from Shea once again.

Just like last night with Perez, lay this number with the Mets and wait to collect as Maine goes to 10-2 on the road this year.

Mets are the play.

PADRES
I don't care what the number is in this game. I am laying it.

I have jumped on Peavy and his road starts this year and I have been rewarded greatly for it.

He is 8-0 on the highway this year with a 1.22 ERA. How solid is that.

Furthermore, the Padres are in a pennant race and a win tonight will put him at 17-5 for the year and probably lower than ERA of 2.10.

Can you say Cy Young award winner? Yes you can.

Hernandez comes off 7 shutout innings against the Rockies but he didn't pitch all that well. He had men on base almost every inning and escaped a bases loaded no out jam.

It could have been bad if the Rockies could have gotten the big hit.

Now he faces the Padres he is 2-2 against his last 4 allowing more than 3 runs in 3 of those 5 starts.

Considering Peavy is 4-0 his last 4 versus the D'backs allowing 1, 0 and 0 runs the last 3 times he has faced them, any price is worth admission to this show tonight.

Bottom line. Livian Hernandez is not beating Jake Peavy tonight. At least that is the way I see it.

Padres are the play.

D'RAYS
All this talk about Kazmir and Shields but don't sleep on Sonnanstine.

He comes off 8 shutout innings at Yankee stadium and now comes back home to face the Orioles, a team that has roughed him up twice this year.

Learn from your mistaks young Luke Skywalker. Trust the force you had in New York and go with it.

Prior to that Yankee start he was coming off a horrific start in Boston to shut down the A's for 5 innings allowing 2 earned in getting the win there.

So back to back wins brings him back home against the O's and I like him and the D'rays off that loss last night.

Liz has good stuff but is hittable. He is 0-1 with an ERA over 7 allowing 7 runs in his 9 innings here at the big league level.

This is a great spot to ride the D'rays and call for them to get a big home win over the O's.

Drays are the play.<!-- / message -->

“2 UNIT” ESPN-TV TOTAL (Dodgers at Cubs OVER 9’ in an 8:05 eastern start on ESPN/WGN-TV--------Stults versus Lilly): The Cubs lead in the National League Central was cut down to a half-game last night as they lost while both the Brewers and Cardinals came out on the winning end. Even though their leading homerun hitter Alfonso Soriano recently returned from injury, the Cubs are having some major offensive problems which has put undo pressure on the pitchers to perform. One of the Chicago starters who has come apart at the seams has been ace Carlos Zambrano who took a pot shot at Wrigley Field fans earlier this week. Tonight’s starter Ted Lilly completed a massive 9-1 run which came to an end in early August. In his most recent 4 trips to the mound Lilly’s ERA (6.55) has exploded so the Chicago offense is going to have to find a way to produce some runs this evening. Not only is Lilly in a slump where he has allowed opponents to hit at least 1 homerun in SEVEN consecutive assignments, he has had great difficulty in his career against the Dodgers (6.57 ERA) including a very high-scoring 9-8 loss earlier this campaign. I will be the first to tell you that the Dodgers offense like most NL West teams is highly suspect, but that lineup got a boost yesterday when veteran Nomar Garciaparra was activated off the disabled list. Even though he is not fully healed from a calf-muscle injury, the Dodgers decided to activate Garciaparra because he is hitting stellar in the clutch (.400 batting average) with runners in scoring position. Even though the ex-Cub will not be in the starting lineup tonight, he still could be a factor as a pinch-hitter in the late innings. Los Angeles has done their best to add VETERAN pitchers (David Wells, Estaban Loaiza) for the critical stretch run, but those plans have been put to a momentary halt. Due to a 7-game suspension imposed on David Wells who as normal went ballistic on an umpire, Los Angeles was forced to recall ! Eric Stu lts from the minors as a replacement. The last time Stults started at the major league level he lasted only 4.2 innings where his pitch count (98) was extremely high. With first-place on the line, I just have a feeling that the Cubs will light up this rookie even though the team has plated just FIVE runs the last couple of nights against Dodger pitching. Actually the Cubs offensive slump spans the past 12 games where the team has averaged only 3.3 runs per contest. Despite their offensive difficulties, tonight’s posted total is relatively high which is a real shock since the weather forecast calls for relatively light 5-to-10 mile per hour winds. My database research indicates that the Dodgers are an impressive 17-5 OVER the total the past two years after consecutive “margin” victories of 4+ runs. Chicago’s Ted Lilly is 6-1-1 OVER the total in the most recent 8 starts in front of the HOME fans in Wrigleyville.

Tom Freese Blue Line Club- Wednesday, September 5

Pittsburgh at St. Louis (8:10pm)

St. Louis appeared to be dead in the water about 6 weeks ago. Coming into play tonight they are just one game behind the first place Cubs. The Cardinals get Mark Mulder back tonight. All he has done in his 8 career team starts against Pitsburgh is go 8-0. St. Louis is 14-5 in Game 3 of a home series. The Pirates are going with rookie call up Billy Buckner. He figures to be in over his head here tonight. Play On St. Louis - (Mulder vs. Buckner)

BREWERS vs the Astros. 8:05pm EST

COVER STORY: After struggling in the second half of the season, the Brewers are making a run for the lead in the NL-Central. They are 1.5 games behind the Cubs with the Cards on their tail as Milwaukee will probably have to win the division for post-season play. The Beer Boys have won four of their last five, including last night's 5-3 win over these Astros, making it six of the last seven vs Houston! Astros have lost three of their last four, are 1-4 last five with Albers, and are just 8-23 last 31 on the road vs .500> teams.

Take Chicago (N) Cubs
1 Unit on Chicago Cubs -146 (listing Lilly) The Cubs are putting the better starter on the hill today in Ted Lilly which gives them the decisive edge at home. Chicago is due against the Blue and White after dropping each of the first two games of the series. It's nearly impossible to win 3 straight games against an opponent in their home ballpark. We'll take the Cubs to bounce back today.

THIS IS A COMP. THE PREMIUM PLAYS HAVE ALREADY BEEN POSTED

LARRY NESS

Analysis:
The Rockies made it two straight over the Giants with 6-5 win last night. Colorado is now 29-10 at Coors Field since June 2 and is now a season-high six games over .500 for the season. The Giants (62-77) have lost four in a row and are the only NL West team out of playoff contention. One of Colorado's hottest starters takes the mound Wednesday as Ubaldo Jimenez (3-2, 4.03 ERA) goes for his fifth straight quality start. The rookie right-hander went 1-2 with a 6.57 ERA over his first five starts of the season but is 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and a .132 opponent batting average over his last four (team is 3-1). Kevin Correia (3-6, 3.77 ERA) makes his fourth start for San Francisco since coming out of the bullpen to join the rotation. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his three starts since replacing the injured Russ Ortiz. This righty vs righty matchup really favors the Rockies, as Colorado is 31-15 (plus-$1,455) vs right-handers in '07 (averaging 6.1 RPG), while San Francisco is 41-54 (minus-$1,465) vs lefties in '07. Take the Rockies.

San Diego Padres (110)
Wed Sep 5 '07 9:40p

Jake Peavy, RHP (16-5, 2.10) the Padres starting pitcher here this evening prepares to continue test his dominance over NL hitters this evening as his team , visits the Arizona Cardinals. Peavy has over powered the DBacks this season , recording a 3-0 record and a minuscule 1.71 ERA while striking out 45 batters in 26 1/3 innings of work. I like the NL ERA(Peavy) leader against anybody and anyone the DBacks send to the hill. Take the Padres against the moneyline

Double Dime Mismatch Big Bet Of The Week :

Millwaukee -1 1/2 Runs

Lenny Del Genio

MIL (-160) vs 957 HOU

Analysis: Play on the Brewers at 8:05 ET. This is a matchup of the NL's best home team in Milwaukee (44-26) and its worst road team, Houston (26-44). The Brewers have closed to within a half-game of the first-place Cubs in the NL Central and with a six-game road trip beginning on Friday, Milwaukee will badly want to take this rubber game versus the Astros. Matt Albers (4-6, 5.36 ERA) gets the start for Houston and while he is 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA in four starts since rejoining the rotation, he's 2-4 with a 5.76 ERA in eight road starts in '07 (team is 3-5). Milwaukee rookie Yovani Gallardo (6-4, 4.66 ERA) is 4-1 with a 3.26 in six home starts this year (team is 4-2), so the play is on the Brewers.

15* MLB Underdog of the Week (9-2 all-sports run the L/6 days!)

Play on the Dodgers at 8:05 ET. Just when it looked as if the Dodgers had fallen out of the NL West race, they've rebounded by winning seven of nine. LA is now within three games of San Diego and Arizona, which are separated by one percentage point atop the NL West. The Dodgers have outscored the Cubs 17-5 and totaled 27 hits in the first two games of this series, while posting a 2.00 ERA. Meanwhile, the Cubs have lost seven of their last 12 games, averaging 3.3 runs per game. Wednesday's lefty versus lefty pitching matchup greatly favors the Dodgers. LA is 12-5 (plus-$750) versus lefties on the road this year, while the Cubs are just 14-21 (minus-$1,370) versus left-handers in '07, averaging only 3.7 rpg! LA's Eric Stults has pitched reasonably well in three starts (3.71 ERA), while Chicago's Ted Lilly is in a slump. He's allowed 16 ERs over his last fours starts (22 innings) for a 6.55 ERA (he's 0-2 and the team is 1-3). LA is my 15* Underdog of the Week.
