They say common sense is the least common of all senses.....
Whomever named and opened the new Japanese restaurant, in Escazu, "Sensu" must really like the proverb stated previously.
Yesterday, I decided to go to there for lunch, heck, it had been days since I had wanted to go there, several people had said it was the best sushi place they'd gone to, killer sushi, sushi this, sushi that...etc etc...
So, we went. Unfortunately, we went. Although the place overall looks kinda nice, I must say I regret spending my money and time there. The restaurant is located in one of those tiny 'locals' in Escazu, the place is actually so small that you can either sit out on the sidewalk, and hope your food doesn't blow away, or you can sit inside, either on the small black bar, on on of about 2 tables, if you dont like that, perhaps you can continue your way upstairs, where there is a bit more room. On your way up, its hard not to notice the two 'airplane styled' bathrooms on your left for I swear to God they look smaller than those on any aircraft... You make your way up the stairs (kinda reminds you of a small cabin) and finally get upstairs. Upstairs is ok, I can't be that harsh with a restaurant, nonetheless, it just didn't float my boat. One of the first things you notice; the two kids that wait on you, either an Argentinian looking/talking girl, dressed like she don't give a damn or a 17 year old 'dude' like the one that wants you to buy a dell. Both are completely inept when it comes to the menu or the sushi itself.
Reading over the menu, I couldn't avoid but noticing the loud music (trance, rave styled) and the fact that the Bento boxes seem like more of a ripoff than the regular menu itself. No, its not expensive, but the boxes which should be more of a deal are, at least in my opinion less of a deal than the rest...
So, we order, two bento boxes number 6, and a caterpillar roll.....
Waiting for the food to get there, I look at the menu again and notice that HEY!!!! They come with a miso soup and salad...wooohoooo.....(dont be surprised, so do bento boxes at samurai)....
The soup was ok, the salad, on the other hand LOOKED and TASTED like someone had puked in it....I'm a big fan of salads, however I did not like this one and I don't remember the last time I didn't like a salad...
10 minutes and a couple of unsuccesfully answered questions later, the bento boxes get there. 1-2-3-4.....10....10 pieces...hmmmm I thought the menu said 13. We ask the waiter, she says she doesn't know...awwwwww isn't that cute, the waiter doesn't know....
I couldn't help but notice that these bento boxes are considerably smaller than the ones offered by Samurai...ohhh what the hell, lets try em...
Cali roll was ok, no flying fish eggs but ok...
New York roll was good....
Salmon skin roll, very dry and not so tasty....
4 pieces of niguiri, all ok, but only 2 kinds of fish....
5 minutes later, along comes the wacky looking girl, with the remaining 3 pieces of sushi, the tekka maki that were missing earlier...(I mean come on, I've heard of POW's missing for less time...) and the caterpillar roll.
When I ordered the thing, worth 3309 colones, I figured, this is for a reason, it probably has more 'other thingies' in it than eel....and ahhhh yes, I wasn't very far off as the thing was rather small, very cold and served with very little sauce (for anyone that eats sushi, you know how good this sauce is)...I thought about asking for a little more but I figured, by the time the goofy chick came upstairs, took the order, went downstairs (past the airplane bathrooms) and up again, the roll would be gone.
Not everything was bad though.....the ice tea and the ice cream were good....LOL...
By this time, there were, a group of about 30 something year old ladies, two dykes in a corner, a family of 3, kat and me and two chicks which looked like they were into all kinds of weird things sitting around. Except for the last two, everyone else seemed like they wished the music would be turned down a bit.
I mean, trance is music is kind of in n stuff...but I don't know...it just didnt go well with Japanese food....I'm aware that this New York styled sushi house is in right now and that Morimoto himself might be behind something like this, but this one just wasn't to my liking.
All in all, as I paid the bill, I thought what I always think when I go anywhere else "I don't know why I keep trying to find somewhere better than Sakura".
Sensu, overall rating: 5
Sakura rules baby, Sakura rules. To anyone that hasn't been there, it is tops in Costa Rica, tops, tops tops tops tops, and before you ask, no I have no relationship with em except for the fact that I go there every week.
