I'm 42 and i've had 3, mainly because I was having severe stomach problems when I was in my late 20's. When they did the first one, they found some polyps, so now I have to have one done every 4-5 years.

When I had the first one done, I was sedated, but awake. I was sound asleep for the last two.

The worst part is drinking the God awful laxative and then peeing out of your ass for the next 12 hours.

had one about 3 years ago, was having problems not being regular, then one day had some stomach pains, ER gave me a CT scan, said they saw something in my intestines, a little spot, scheduled me for one the next day, had to take some horse pills like every hour with a shit load of water, then shit water forever, went in the next day got put under, woke up and doc said every thing looked good all the way to that point in my intestine, had no idea what it was, just looked inflamed he said, gave me some expensive medicine that i couldn't afford, just been dealing with it. Sometimes i poop, sometimes i go a few days without.

Nothing to worry about, they will probably give you a sedative that will make you half asleep or maybe even knock you out completely. I had it done in 2006 drug free and it is not even as bad as a root canal. Way overated as far as pain goes.

The prep sucks though.

Info on colonoscopy prep:

Good move though having it done, colon cancer can be cured if caught early.

Just make sure when you feel something inserted that both of his hands aren't on your hips.

After 40, you have to. Had a scare a couple of years ago, got it checked out. Has nothing to do with fast food either.

Why Should I Have A Colonoscopy?

A Colonoscopy (koh-luh-NAH-skuh-pee) lets the physician look inside your entire large intestine, from the lowest part, the rectum, all the way up through the colon to the lower end of the small intestine. The procedure is used to diagnose the causes of unexplained changes in bowel habits, as well as to look for early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. Colonoscopy enables the physician to see inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, ulcers, bleeding, and muscle spasms.

People can live healthy lives and still get cancer. Have a friend who went to the doctor for an exam for an insurance policy. Found out he had stage four prostate cancer. It was highly preventive too.

Anyone in their 20s now probably will never have to have colonoscopy as medicne evolves less invasive procedures are always replacing the current tests and treatments. In 25 years they will probably have virtual colonoscopy machines that do the work somehow that a real scope does now..

Under sedation the colonoscope is passed through the colon and any polyps removed. The picture shows one of the scopes with a biopsy forceps coming out the tip of the scope. This examination is advised for everyone over the age of 50 every five years for the detection and prevention of colon cancer.
