What a complete idiot this guy is.
Not only could he have awarded this guy/pitcher history like he deserved, but he could have ALSO made the rest of Umpire Jim Joyce's life easier.
But now BOTH of these guys have to live the rest of their lives in misery wondering and hearing things from everyone when that jack azz Selig could have fixed it all!
Why didn't the umpires reverse it? That's the question that should be asked, instead everybody with lazy minds blames the commissioner right away. Horrible job by the whole umpiring crew. Selig would be setting a horrible precedent by changing a game based on a blown call after the game was over.
I agree 100 % ! You can't make up rules as you go. Umps blow calls every day ! Where do you draw the line ? I think perhaps a rule similar to the NFL might resolve situations like this where a coach can call for a replay twice a game or something like that.It is impossible situation. It is not Selig's fault that the ump blew it, it is the ump.. you cant just make up rules as you go along, and the fact the call had no impact on the outcome of the game, you cant overturn it without opening pandoras box. Next thing you know players will come out by the boatload overturning calls that could have changed their batting average, stats for a season etc, errors etc.. and just think how many of these things impact a players contract/incentives as well.
Nevermind the fact that the moment is over.. even if you award him the perfect game despite all the implications and costs for backtracking stats, the moment is over, the celebration has passed, and the perfect game will still be tainted by Joyce's call.
I just rewatched this and I think Joyce made the right call.
You can see the ball floating into his glove. He did not have it completely.
If that was a perfect game that play would be safe 9 out of 10 times.
