Background:
I travel, a lot, for work. This has led to a nice paycheck, gaining 40 pounds, high cholesteral, and some family strife. I promosed my wife no (or almost no) work on weekends, daily exercise (lost about 10 pounds), and to take better care of myself.

Situation:
I'm working on a high profile 1 month assignment in Richmond, VA. The air travel is killing me (used to the train to NYC). Another opportunity just came up that my boss wants to do, it will involve circa 40 hours of work between next week and the end of June, including a trip to Detroit. I would have to do this work IN ADDITION to the 50-60 hours I am already working. No extra pay or any tangible benefit. I know myself, I am unlikely to be able to do any extra work on Mondays (wake 5 am and air travel), or Thursday (return air travel). If I don't do it on the weekends, this means my 32 hours would be 3 hours/night every Tuesday and Wednesday for the next 4-5 weeks, plus I would need to make up the day trip to my current client (another 10 hours of overtime)

Question:
What is the best way to convey to my boss that while I am flattered he wants me to handle it, I would really rather not at this time. (I'm also going to Tahoe at the end of June for a wedding for a week, and would rather not be completely destroyed when I do).

All constructive advise is appreciated.

as sherman said - the truth would be a great place to start

also let him know that if you take this extra job - it will really cut into your sleep and time like that - and burning the candles at both ends will only lead to that project not being done at its best - and it will also affect your "regular" job.

I would quit altogether, sounds like you have about 5 years left to live at most.

Thanks Winky and Sherman.
Honest, huh. Not one of our core concepts. Not sure how that will go over, but you are probably correct.

I'm not covered by current or prospective overtie rules.
That's why they like these projects dobled up, pure profit for them.
I think I'll tell him thanks for the opportunity, but I will respectively pass as I do not feel I could adequately service the needs of both clients within the parameteers of the timeframes specified. And remain sane.

Did this once before 2 years ago. Worked one clint 7 am -3 pm, then other client 3:30 pm to 11 pm. Back to hotel to respond to days emails and review work of my crew from Job 1.
Got a promotion, no bonus mind you, promotion equated to about 2% of pay. Not really worth working 16+ hours a day for a month

My advice would be to practice what your posting name implies...start with your boss!

ask him if he likes the job you're doing in Richmond
tell him to be effective at this you need to concentrate on this particular job
tell him you'll do the other deal when you're done in Richmond
tell him your health is dictation this move.

Sound plan of attack from Johnny DeMarco. Sort of the way lawyers ask questions, getting your boss to think of the positives before declining his offer.

Just respectfully tell him no, you can't do it. Bottom line is if he is asking you to do all this then he probably respects your work greatly so little chance of something negative happening. If you don't say no then he will not only keep giving you stuff like that, but also his superiors will think he can get these things done and keep piling them on. Clearly you need more people and the only way to get those resources is to make it clear it will be lost work if they don't fill the need. No job beyond being a C-level executive can be worth those kinds of hours. And the C-levels can always delegate it if they are strong.

Unfortunately you did not tell him immediately you would not be able to do it. Tell him you thought it over and it just would be too much work for you. Don't go into the excuses unless he presses you.

Everything seems to be working out
Turns out he never actually read the emails forwarded to me, and when he did, he had similar concerns
I stressed that I would be willig to do the project in July, and offered to be on the conference call with him. If it could not be delayed, I offered to be a high level technical resource for however did run the project.

Honesty, huh, who would have thought of that.

Thanks all for your input.
