When you leave the "fertile crescent" of college football (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida and take-on a tour of duty in Southern California and then, get invited to return to the epi-center, it is natural for suspicions to the aroused. You don't go pulling the wool over the eyes of the Crimson Tide faithful easily. In my humble opinion, Kiffin is already on the hot-seat.

I pretty much agree with RT and Clover , however , despite his "supposed" commitment to Saban i think this is just a temporary transistional job for Kiffen and i only see him staying 2-3 years tops. ...and with a new qb (or sims) i dont think we'll see the guru in him come out , at least not this year.

Texas A&M

Kevin Sumlin better get a handle on his football team and fast. Three more Aggies were arrested last week. Defensive lineman Gavin Stansburg was arrested on an assault charge, while Howard Matthews and Ed Pope were arrested for failure to appear to the police department. Stansbury, Matthews and Pope are just the latest in offseason misconduct for the team. The first casualty was safety Kameron Miles dismissed over a theft incident. Defensive lineman Issiah Golden was arrested for drugs and has since withdrawn from school. Linebacker Darian Claiborne was arrested on a marijuana charge and noise violation. Quarterback Kenny Hill was arrested for public intoxication and was passed out in a planter box down town. Wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones was arrested for disorderly conduct. No, its just a rumor that Texas A&M will change its name from the Aggies to the Outlaws.

South Carolina

Steve Spurrier and staff have some pretty good prospects on board, and some good prospects on the way. That's the best way to sum things up when talking about the 2015 class. Four of the six players on board are four star prospects or better and one is a five star player. Other four-star players are JUCO studs defensive tackle D.J. Jones and defensive end Dante Sawyer who want to play for South Carolina. They both play at East Mississippi Community College and are rated the No. 3 and No. 5 players in the nation. Four-star athlete Jalen Christian is another possibility, as is four-star offensive lineman Zack Bailey. And several top ranked quarterbacks are currently talking to the Gamecocks. Win and they will come I guess. South Carolina has won 33 games the past three seasons.

Kentucky

According to a release from the university, quarterback Jalen Whitlow will transfer to another school. Whitlow who passed for 1,033 yards and ran for 457 yards last year wasn't considered a good fit for Kentucky's "Air Raid" attack. The coaches thought he was better suited for an option attack and his chances of starting had diminished. The Wildcats now have four quarterbacks competing for the starting job. Max Smith, Reese Phillips and Pat Towles along with early enrollee Drew Barker. Smith hasn't been practicing because of injury. No word on where Whitlow plans to transfer. He could be a nice pickup for the right offense.

LSU

A matchup between LSU and Syracuse has been in the works quite a while, and now it becomes official. The Tigers will travel to the Carrier Dome in 2015, and the Orangemen will return to Baton Rouge in 2017. LSU recently schedule two furture Pac-12 series against UCLA and Arizona State. LSU will play UCLA in 2021 and 2024, and they will play Arizona State in 2022 and 2023. LSU opens the 2014 season with Wisconsin in Houston and will travel during 2016 to face the Badgers. With the new playoff system and strength of schedule playing a role in who gets invited...look for all SEC teams to start beefing up their non-conference schedules.

Sidenote: Winning teams find ways to win; losing teams find ways to lose. By concentrating on winning teams, in right situations, you increased your chances of winning. That's because winning teams don't beat themselves (turnovers, penalties, etc.) On the flip side, losing teams are losers because they make more mistakes at crucial times in a game. Look to 'play on' winning teams as underdogs, and to 'play against' losing teams teams as favorites.

Alabama

A defensive struggle was featured Saturday afternoon during the Alabama football team's A-Day game to conclude spring practice. That means the Crimson Tide can be pleased its stout defense remains intact for the coming season. However, concern over the offense can cause some concern for the rest of the offseason. The White team, which consisted of the first team defense and second team offense, defeated the Red team 17-13 before an announced crowd of 73,506 in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Neither team could sustain drives, which led to a first half shutout by both sides. There were five turnovers, four from interceptions, and one fumble recovery. Redshirt freshman quarterback Cooper Bateman, the No. 2 QB, made the competition interesting with a steady performance. He led the White team and was the most impressive of the five quarterbacks. Blake Sims, the No.l quarterback struggled as he completed 13 of 30 for 178 yards and 2 interceptions. Running back T. J. Yeldon was named the player of the game as he rushed for 95 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries. There were no serious injuries to come out of the game.

Several recruits visited Alabama during A-Day weekend and four of them committed after the game. Five-star cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrich from New Jersey picked the Tide over 30 other offers. Fitzpatrick, at 6-foot, 193 pounds, is the No. 1 prospect in New Jersey and No. 4 cornerback in the country. Four-star safety Shawn Burgress-Becker, a 6-1, 187 pounder from Pompano Beach, Florida and is rated the No. 9 athlete in the nation. His teammate, receiver Calvin Ridley, also committed. He is rated the No. 3 receiver in the nation. Leo Lewis of Brookhaven, Mississippi was the last to commit and is rated the No. 5 inside linebacker in the country. Alabama has 14 commitments in the 2015 class with these commitments.

Auburn

Those hoping to see an offensive display from the Tigers during the A-Day game Saturday got their wish. Auburn's Blue team starters were unstoppable racking up 657 yards total offense. Quarterback Nick Marshall was named the offensive MVP going 13 of 22 for 236 yards and 4 touchdowns. The running backs also had a big day as Corey Grant rushed for 128 yards and Cameron Artis-Payne going for 97 yards. All told, the offense amassed 434 yards passing and 308 rushing, a good result for a team looking to air it out more in the fall. An announced crowd of 70,635 watched the game.

Sidenote: Winning comes with a price. Auburn's trip to the BCS National Championship game cost the athletic department $3.13 million dollars. For 370 members of the team and staff travel party to go to Pasadena, for eight days each, it cost $1,008,160. Auburn sent 439 people with the band and cheerleaders for four days at a cost of $501,950. The "official" party of faculty, athletics department and other employees for four days cost Auburn $174,680. The total transportation cost was $1,684,790. Meals, lodging and or per diem cost $1,060,111 with nearly 70 percent going to the team and staff. Equipment and supplies cost another $323,562.

Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive says big five conferences have common ground with the union movement. Slive doesn't think college athletes should have employee status, but believes there is some common ground with the proposal from the five power leagues and a union movement. The NCAA board of directors is expected to consider Thursday (4/24) a recommendation restructuring the NCAA to create autonomy in specific areas for the SEC, Big Ten, Pacific-12, Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference. A vote is anticipated at the board's meeting in August. The 65 members of the five conferences are seeking to be allowed to cover the full cost of attendance for athletes, among other initatives. Slive who has monitored the case of Northwestern football players seeking to be allowed to unionized said the leagues want athletes to have "a voice and vote in NCAA" legislation. He said he doesnt think the NCAA's changes would be too little or necessarily too late.

Slive addressed a variety of issues, including SEC football schedules. He expects SEC presidents and chancellors to vote on whether to add a ninth league game before spring meetings May 27-30 in Destin, Florida. The possible scenarios include eight games or nine games, with or without permanent inter-division opponents like Alabama-Tennessee or Auburn-Georgia. He hopes to show them with all the formats every one of them has advantages and disadvantages.

Sidenote 1: You're only as good as your information. Because the foundation for handicapping is putting as many edges in your favor as possible, it's important to seek good, reliable information. In this age of the internet and electronic communication, there is a world of winning information out there waiting to be discovered. The more you learn, the better your chances of success.

Sidenote 2: Statistics don't lie. Statistics report strengths and weaknesses in teams. Some teams may win games with poor stats but it is only a matter of time before their poor performance on the playing field catches up with their win-loss record. By finding one team's strength, and identifying another team's weaknesses, you can get a feel for hidden advantages.

Alabama vs. Tennessee. Auburn vs. Georgia. Those traditional rivalries could be in jeopardy if the SEC sticks to its current eight game conference schedule. After a coaches meeting yesterday in Birmingham, most seem convinced the league will stick with eight games. Nick Saban was the only coach pushing for nine conference games. Right now the SEC scheduling format has each school playing the six other schools in its division and two schools from the other division. Each school has a permanent rival in the other division. That leaves one game on the schedule to rotate among the other six schools. Under the format, it will take a school 12 years to play every school in the conference. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive favors a new format. The consensus appears to be for changing the 6-1-1 format to 6-0-2. If that happens, it's goodbye to some old annual rivalry games. Alabama has played Eastern Division rival Tennessee 96 times. Auburn has played Eastern Division rival Georgia 117 times. Many people who follow college football (Me included) believe going to nine conference games plus one game against an opponent in one of the other five major conferences would strengthen the ratings of SEC schedules. That could be important in the new playoff format and could perhaps improve the SEC's changes of getting two teams into the four team tournament. More conference games could also strengthen the programming for the new SEC Network which begins in August. You play 10 good games against quality opponents because of fan interest. I'm an Alabama fan...but I wouldn't drive to Tuscaloosa with free tickets to seem them play/scrimmage Chattanooga. I think with SOS being part of the new playoffs and the future success of the SEC Network...tougher schedules in the SEC are on the way.

Sidenote: The single largest factor in early line moves is injuries. The 'Wise Guys' live and die for them, unearthing every nook and cranny, ferreting them out. When they get wind of a twisted knee or a lingering hangnail, they jump on it like a bank robber left alone overnight in a vault. The problem, though, is once you have had a chance to play an 'injured game' the line value is no longer there. Remember this; every team has backup replacements waiting for a chance to enter the starting lineup. This especially holds true when it comes to running backs. It's only when 'cluster injuries' hit that a team has a difficult time carrying out its game plan. When it comes to injuries, buyer beware.

On the other hand Bama could improve its strength of schedule by ditching Tennessee and playing Fla , Ga , SC , and Mizzou more regularly. ... lol

Of course i only kid .... but seriously , the AD's will be the ones making the vote in Destin (not the coaches) and i think most will favor whatever Slive thinks is best. ... it should be close , maybe 8/6 ?

i should clarify , by 8/6 i meant 8/6 favoring a 9 game sked.

If they stay at 8 they will ABSOLUTELY do away with the annual cross-division game. ...theres really only bama , tenn , aub , and ga interested in that anyway.

would be a sad day if Barn isn't on the Dawgs schedule every year. One of the best games of the year.....with so much recruits in the balance on that border game. Please say it ain't so.

hope all is well buddy!

The oldest rivalry in the SEC. ...I still think the AD's will see things differently than coaches. ...I guess we'll find out in 4 or 5 weeks.

Ty, Al...I don't really know how the scheduling vote will go but I would lean toward the commissioner's push. That would be 6 division games and 2 rotating games from the other division. If that happens, then some strong rivalry games will go by the wayside.

I understand where the majority of coaches are coming from wanting to play just eight conference games. It's a long ass season and league games are tough...all of them. My problem is non-conference scrimmage games with Chattanooga, UT Martin, Furman, Old Dominion, Eastern Kentucky, Lamar etc...fans are getting tired of these type mismatches, especially with the cost involved going to one of these games.

We shall see I guess....................

Damn it's good to see this bastard around The RX! Even if he is a dawg. My brother, hope you're doing well. If you make it to Columbia this year, you've got an open invitation to my tailgate.

Might just have to take ya up on that. I have been a real slack ass on here, but just haven't had time to input anything with some thought. Got 3 new developments going with 4 more going through zoning. It's good to be pushing dirt again and making money, but time is elusive these days. Still checking in daily and y'all are rolling once again. I will make time to post some more once season gets a little closer.

Hoping we beat the dog shit out of y'all's little sister, and roll into Sandstorm high on esteem. With all the backfield talent we have this year we need to run a 4 RB set on O......haha. Tough to get a good read on what this season will be like, but it's those seasons that we seem to succeed better. Going to be a fight for a trip to ATL in week 3 once again.

Keep on keeping on Real......I will be in touch!

Ole Miss

With 14 starter back, there is plenty of buzz surrounding this Ole Miss team in 2014. With Alabama, LSU and Auburn each losing some key personnel from last year's teams, the door is cracked for the Rebels to make some noise in the SEC West. In order for Ole Miss to climb in the division standings, quarterback Bo Wallace has to have a huge season. The Tennessee native threw for 3,346 yards and 18 touchdowns last season and added 355 yards and 6 scores on the ground. The senior has thrown for 40 touchdowns over the last two year but has also tossed 27 interceptions during that span. Finding more overall consistency as a passer, along with eliminating the turnovers will be a key to watch for Wallace in 2014. Of course, it should help that he is now a full year removed from shoulder surgery.

Sidenote: The Rebels are just 3-10 against the spread playing Vanderbilt the past 13 games.

Mississippi State

After coming off the bench to lead the Bulldogs to a victory over rival Ole Miss, and a standout performance in the Liberty Bowl, quarterback Dak Prescott looks poised for a breakout year. The Louisiana native threw for 1940 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and added 269 total yards per game through eight SEC contest and should build off of those totals with a full offseason to recover from a shoulder injury. There's a ton of upside with Prescott in 2014, especially with a strong supporting cast at his disposal. If all the pieces come together at Mississippi State there's a good chance Prescott can be an All-SEC type quarterback.

Sidenote: The Bulldogs are a money burning 3-14 ATS their last 17 games playing LSU.

Schedule Update

The SEC on Sunday announced the format for future football scheduling that is a continuation of existing format and adds a strength-of-schedule component that requires all schools to play an ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 or Pac 12 opponent on an annual basis beginning with the 2016 season. Each SEC team will continue to play eight conference games per season, to include six games against division opponents and two games against non-division opponents. One of the non-division opponents will be a permanent annual opponent and the other non-division opponent will rotate each year.

The permanent non-division games are as listed:

WEST.........................EAST
Alabama....................Tennessee
Arkansas....................Missouri
Auburn......................Georgia
LSU...........................Florida
Ole Miss.....................Vanderbilt
Miss State..................Kentucky
Texas A&M.................South Carolina

Tradition matters in the Southeastern Conference....glad to see Alabama/Tennessee and Auburn/Georgia games continue.
