Salty- If he had played the total then knowing the game plan could have made a difference but not for the side.

mvbski...you're not making sense. Winky was not selling anything. If he starts his own service tomorrow, then maybe you have something. Otherwise, the comparison is senseless.

It's one thing to be skeptical in this instance. To compare this to a ripoff tactic utilized by an unscrupulous "service" is inane.

Raider...I was just suggesting a possibility. I do not know what the specific info was, so I have no idea whether it pertained to game planning or not. It was just a guess on my part based on my observation of the game.

winky, thanks for the winner...seattle covered and thats what matters....whether you had other info or not, it does not matter....i think most people follow your picks because you have a good reputation....if people dont like your picks then they should not follow them regardless of what you say about a game....
thanks again and good luck with the rest of the games

Salty- That's why I waited until after the game to see if there was some last minute info that came up before I said anything about Winky's claim. Hopefully Winky will post and clear everything up. Until that time it's my opinion he was blowing smoke.

mvbski (and others)...No offense, but you really don't know what you're talking about.

I cited a few personal examples...but I can tell you that because of what I do for a good portion of my living, I know a lot of people in sports. Not current players, but people who have varied associations with numerous teams. There's rarely a week that goes by where I don't hear "something" about somebody or some team. Most of the "information" is pretty useless and has little to do with what might take place on the field of play. But every once in awhile, I do hear something that I think might be worth pursuing from a wagering standpoint. It's never anything utterly spectacular...those things just aren't out there, and if they are, they won't stay secret very long. It's just an occasional tidbit that can create what I think is an edge.

As for Winky...he used to work for ESPN, and he's involved in sports to at least some extent for part of his livelihood. It stands to reason that since he may very well know some people at different levels of the sports food chain, he may have heard something he deemed valuable enough to pass along...without divulging the actual info itself.

I don't find this to be at all unusual.

There's a lot of people that know someone from ESPN or have a relative that's an athlete. Many people here have gambled for a long time and have made contacts. We don't go around yelling inside info without revealing the source. Winky should have just said that he likes Sea big and left it at that.

Raider...I agree with you on this last point. In instances like this, the less said the better. Telling something to someone you know in person or onthe phone is not the same as putting it in print on a public forum where we're all using aliases. I think Winky may have exercised more discretion in this case, and my guess is the next time he hears something, he won't offer it in the same fashion.

i`m very interested in the nature of info,if it`s not underhanded or illegal, that can`t be divulged......

particularly since the game is over.....

this is the crux of the issue....if it`s legit info, and involves nothing illegal, then why?...

btw, salty, what was the nature of the tips you received?....

i have a recent one i can share...boxing related...

No offense Salty, but as far as I am concerned, working for ESPN means jack sh!t when it comes to capping. If the ESPN people got inside info, then maybe Hank and Berman and the other MORONS on ESPN would be doing a better job making picks. They're lousy for a reason.

I used to work at my university's athletic department preparing stats for the media guide and the program. I was NEVER in on team meetings or the video room, and neither is any media member. Anyways, I always heard little tidbits of info, but nothing that was "inside info" that would predict the outcome of a game. I would understand it this was a pre-season game where motivation and game planning was a factor, but it's NOT. This is a post-season game.

Anyways, just wanted to tell you that if working at ESPN meant anything, it would mean those clowns on the ESPN shows might be doing a better job picking games.

Cincy...having info and knowing what to do with it are not one and the same.

An example would be something I got on a college football team a few years back. This was near the end of the season, and as it happens I'm friendly with the teams's play by play guy. He informed me that in chatting with the head coach the coach basically told him that the players didn't even want to make the trip for a meaningless final road game. I'd say that's pretty good info. I'd also say that divulging that info publicly would not have been a good idea.

Cincy...anyone who thinks that there isn't a good pipeline of information available is very naive. The key is in discerning what's useful and what isn't...and also in maintaining the utmost discretion as you don't ever want to burn a good source.

That's my pointin this whole Winky situation. I believe he heard something he considered valuable, and I don't think for a sec he's making it up. That said, if it were me, I would not have put anything about it on this board.

Sphincter...you bring up an interesting point. Again, I'll cite my own experience here. I made the mistake of popping off one time after a game about something I'd been told, and revealed who gave me the tidbit. To make a long story short, this eventually got back to the original source...and that's the last time he ever gave me anything...good, bad or indifferent. Lesson learned. There was nothing illegal or anything like that about the info. It was just useful. But I still should have kept my yap shut.

mvbski...you just made my case for me. As a bookmaker, you must have dealt with countless big mouths yammering away about what they heard. And almost all of it was bullcrap. However, I would imagine that this was the same type over and over.

But if someone you considered reliable and that was not prone to behavior of this nature indicated that he had something, you mean to say you wouldn't at least give it consideration?

Further, if you're suggesting that in 20 years of booking action, nobody ever went to your window with some good info, you're dreaming. Maybe they just didn't announce it.

have read your posts here for 2+ years and I know you are none of the nasty things people in this thread are saying. You've made money in the past for me, and your phone calls to scammers are worth the price of admission. I have no problems with what you posted and encourage you to continue to go with your gut on these kinds of deals when it comes to what to post, etc.

i am acquainted with the manager of wba jr middleweight champ travis simms .....he provides info on certain guys he`s involved with and generally knows much as a boxing insider....

he told me prior to the bout that he honestly thought that simms.a big underdog, had the style that would work well vs big puncher garcia....he was adamant....

and he was right....i didn`t make it known because i wasn`t entirely sure that he wasn`t just hyping his own guy....

i won a few bucks.....and next time he provides some insight,i`ll be glad to provide it with explanation....

i still haven`t gotten an explanation as to why it`s tabboo to make such info known..

it`s a secret to be kept that guys didn`t particularly feel excited about playing a lameduck ballgame?...c`mon...

why?.....particularly after the fact.....

wink...i`m not on you...i was just confused about the hushhush stuff....it`s your info....to do with as you like...i just hope some inexperienced guys don`t get scammed with similar claims by less than honorable guys seeking attention...

well,i`m outta here...this is a merry-go-round with everybody skirting the issue.......

i`m happy winky hit....i`m happy we all hit with seattle....

that`s the bottom line...yep,bottom line is,great job...well done..

best of luck,bud....continued success....
