Dosent this mean that someone wants part of the money that has been raised by school tax. so that they can send their child to a private school?

Punter it comes down to the public education system being a terrible terrible problem for this country.

Why is it that the liberals are against this when it would help the poor people the most.

There should be no public schools. It should all be charter schools and make the schools compete to get kids to go to thier schools. You would see new schools going up all over the country. Have the money follow the student not just go to the schools. Give the people a choice of where thier children go to learn.

The teacher unions are against this. It would mean there would be no such thing as tenure. Makes the teachers prove themslves every year. You would see wages go up. After all the schools would have to go after good teachers in order to get the students to go there.

COMPITION is the only way to fix this problem. Period

I don't think that it means you are giving money to private schools, but allowing the money to be attached to the kids and let the parents decide which school the kids go to.

you wouldnt pay any more in taxes than you already do for the public system, kids or not

bottomline this gives parents more options, and specifically outiside the govt's system

If they take away part of the money that is earmarked for the public schools, how is this money going to be made up if not by more tax?

Got to go to bed but am curious about this. My reaction to it is unfavorable but if it is as dumb an idea as I think then why are so many for it and why are they all conservatives?

There already is school choice Punter, if you can afford it. Kinda funny that the party for the poor wants to limit choices for the poor while the party for the rich wants to give poor inner city parents more choices.

What's wrong with that picture? :think2:

Welcome back Willie :toast:

Thanks DP

I gotta avoid a couple of left wing haters that I tend to jump into the gutter with. It should be easy, I'm going to recommit myself to semi-intellectual debate. That's all I'm capable of.

I'm going to scroll through their posts when they return.

My feeling is that for its own good society should make a free high school education available to all its children.

If a parent is not happy with the public school system they should be able to pay a private school to educate their child but they should no more expect to get their school taxes back than a childless couple should.

Well then, that'll keep the poorer people out of private schools. The richer families already have school choice.

I think a better analogy would be to say the government is shifting where they are spending their educational tax dollars, and some of the savings can be used to help pay for a private school. The family would still be expected to foot some of the bill, or receive some financial assistance from the school and / or the community.

Strange, it seems as though you have the stance on this issue that you fault the liberals on in all other fields.

Can you elaborate?

I do believe education is a responsibility of government, and I always like more choices. Competition is good.

If you could show me a way that could offer more and better choices for the same tax $ I would be receptive.

Keep them dumb, keep them poor, that way they will vote for their keepers all their life. There is a method to the madness.

What's wrong with the picture is that in almost every single case, a school voucher only covers a portion of the cost of a private school education. Such a voucher wouldn't help any parent that has no means to cover the remainder of the expenses. As a result, a school voucher for those parents is useless (unless they could sell it, but that wouldn't give them additional educational choices). The only ones that a voucher is helpful to are those that are wealthy enough to cover the remaining balance of the cost (usually tens of thousands of dollars over the course of a few years).

The whole school voucher thing is just another con job and only serves to widen the gap between the haves and have nots. I'm not sure how anyone could argue that it's good for public education.
