Except that the scholarship came from a non-priofit organisation in Chicago, set up specifically for this purposes, not from Berkely itself. The Make a Wish foundation raises money for terminal kids, not terminal adults ... does that anger you, too?

And thats why they play the game.

I think the point is that if it were for Straight people only it would be heavily scruntinized.

And I wonder what is needed to prove your sexuality.....

Straight people have never been marginalised in the way that gays have ... this organisation popped up to serve a need that they felt existed and wasn't being met. Should the day come when straight people are not proportionally represented via college scholarships, then maybe we will see straight scholarships arise. Until then, nobody has demed a need for them.

Gays have equal access to all the scholarships that straights do. And you are not forced to put your sexuality on the scholarship application. You are rewarded for studies, ability etc, not sexual preference. Gays are equally qualified to recieve a sports or acedemic scholarship as straights.

I realise that. And if the gay population did not perceive an imbalance between the % of gays and % of gays receiving scholarships, then this scholarship program might not exist (please note I said 'perceive.') They do their own fundraising and dole it out to their own people. What's the big deal? Who cares if they want to help each other out? If the gov't starts doing this, that is a different matter altogether.

Besides, you assert that if the straight community pulled this, it would be scrutinised. I presume you mean that it would be scrutinised the way this gay scholarship is right now?

First off, to me its not a big deal. I am pretty sure that the general public will not "scrutinise" this scholarship. But as a discussion topic, limiting a scholarship by sexual preference, whether it be by a gay organization of or any other NFP, seems

But if sexual preference were a check box on an application, scruntiny would be too easy of a word to describe it.

I know a poor straight white girl with a father that doesn't pay taxes that can't apply for any financial aids or scholarships. The only scholarship she could apply to was "Grand daughters of WWII vets", and they gave her a whopping $500.00. So, now she pays 3.5% for nearly the rest of her life to have a Masters. The worst part: her field will never pay her enough to live and pay back the loan. Thank you, you stupid fvcking republicans for making an education more expensive than a first mortgage.

How much is a semester's worth of tuition? What about books and such?

Here, college will cost you about 800 bucks a semester X 6 semesters for the average diploma program. A university semester will cost about $2100 per semester X 8 semesters for a regular undergrad. People doing their Master's are generally teacher's assistants at the same time, so their tuition is basically a wash since they also get paid. PhDs almost always make money from it, but the school owns their research.

Student loans are available for eligible people at a payback of 0% interest for the first year after graduation, and 1% below prime for each subsequent year locked in at time of graduation.

State Schools cost between $6 - $12k/year, depending on residency. Private schools.. the sky is the limit. Grad school, twice what you paid for your undergraduate. You can defer those loans until you are done interest free, but if you just can't pay or go to a non US accredited school you defer your loans while they accrue interest.
You know what the most fucked up part is? In a lot of specific school financial aid scenarios, those that cannot get the federal aid because of income, can get more money than those that get the federal aid because those who get the federal aid are paying less out of pocket than those who don't qualify... what a fucked up system.

I dont know of any university that is only charging $2100 per semester. Maybe 15 years ago, but not anymore. It costs a lot more than that for tuition alone, and my university also charges a tech. fee, a health fee, a sport fee, and a few others. These are not fees that you have a choice in paying, all full time students must pay them. Books are generally about $750-$1000 per semester on top of this.

No. It would go far beyond posting on the internet. It would be an ACLU supreme court case.
