Scalia To Student: If Taxes Go Too High ‘Perhaps You Should Revolt’

Knoxville, Tenn. (CBS DC) – Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia told a crowd of law school students that if taxes in the U.S. become too high then people “should revolt.”

Speaking at the University of Tennessee College of Law on Tuesday, the longest-serving justice currently on the bench was asked by a student about the constitutionality of the income tax, theKnoxville News Sentinel reports.

Scalia responded that the government has the right to implement the tax, “but if it reaches a certain point, perhaps you should revolt.”

The justice was invited by the UT law school to present its annual “Rose Lecture,” and discussed events throughout his career such as his 1989 decision to rule with the majority that flag-burning was constitutionally protected speech. Scalia was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

“You’re entitled to criticize the government, and you can use words, you can use symbols, you can use telegraph, you can use Morse code, you can burn a flag,” Scalia told the standing-room-only crowd, according to the News Sentinel.

Scalia said that the justices aren’t swayed by partisan political spats, and that he doesn’t care which party controls the White House. He also expressed his theory of originalism, or that the U.S. Constitution is a fixed law and is not open to evolution or change over time.

“The Constitution is not a living organism for Pete’s sake,” the justice said, according to the report. “It’s a law. It means what it meant when it was adopted.”

I think it is amazing that people think this type of advice is OK, but I guess one can expect it from Sheriff Joe who supports loony ideas and jacks off to the likes of Putin and Bundy. I do wonder where this is going to go, the government is going to be backed into a wall at some point. These loons really think progress was made in Nevada, when in reality the government decided not to chance pissing people off by massacring a bunch of its own . One of these days these yahoos are going to strike first and unfortunately it's not going to be pretty

Just listen to yourself. What kind of convoluted thinking is that?

Didn’t want to chance pissing off people by massacring them?

Well, yeah, it's generally not a good look for the government to "massacre" its own people.

You are the king of hyperbole. Ridiculous thing to say? Sure. Embarrassment to this country? Ha, please.

A Supreme Court judge telling kids to think about revolting against the govt. Yes, that is embarrassing. Conservatives are pathetic and low class.

Yes all conservatives are low class and pathetic and all democrats/liberals are classy and enlightened. More hyperbole. You paint with an awfully broad brush. I'd say that shows less enlightenment, more laziness.

There's plenty of low class liberals. I'm a dem by default, I do not like extreme liberals or extreme conservatives. Give me Bush and Obama. Normal ass dudes who try to make normal ass decisions. I just believe conservatives are a larger and more disruptive force than liberals.

Yeah the fringe of both parties is frightening. Definitely agree with you there. The scary part is the fringe seems to be growing on both sides.

Not really. Keep on guessing though. Not really anti-government as a whole. Just not a fan of a lot of what's going on in our current government. But you know I think you're a troll, so probably not worth my time or your time, for that matter, to get into this.

If you claim to be a Libertarian you are more fringe than nut job conservatives. Unless you aren't really a Libertarian. Like one of my cousins is a young Libertarian. Reminds me more of a hippie than anything else.

What I'm saying is, I agree with libertarians on some issues, republicans on others and democrats on others. I don't look to a party or ideology to tell me how to think or feel. I like to research issues and come to my own conclusions. If you've read anything that I've posted about ACA you'll see that.
