But ultimately depressing, because it accurately depicts the compulsiveness so many gamblers have. A straight gambling movie with no bells or whistles. If you are a gambler and cannot see some of yourself in this guy, you're lying big-time.

Based on a true story that happened in the early 1980's in Toronto. I had this movie on order from Netflix for over 2 months, got it tonight, had to compulsively watch it immediately - synopsis below

"Philip Seymour Hoffman adds another great performance to his gallery of losers in Owning Mahowny, an engrossing, fact-based comedy-drama about the perils of compulsive gambling. The subject is hardly new to movies, but as Toronto bank-loan manager Dan Mahowny, Hoffman brings fresh depth and tortured humanity to his portrayal of a man who helplessly feeds his pathological need to gamble with millions in embezzled bank money that he can't afford to lose. His supportive wife (Minnie Driver, barely recognizable beneath a plain-looking wig and glasses) is aware of the problem but not its severity, and in fulfilling the promise of his debut feature Love and Death on Long Island, British director Richard Kwietniowski strikes a delicate balance of humor, adrenalin, and escalating tension, guiding Hoffman, Driver, and an excellent supporting cast (including Long Island's John Hurt) in a quietly suspenseful study of Mahowny's ill-fated impulse. Set in the early 1980s but timeless in its study of dysfunctional behavior, Owning Mahowny is a safe bet for film lovers everywhere. --Jeff Shannon"

Jazz, I know you are not going to like this, but I DID NOT enjoy the movie. I didn't like the acting of the lead actor, didn't like the writing and didn't like the directing. Sorry

Not a problem, Charlie - there's always going to be a bad apple in the barrel (lol) - besides, not being a producer, I didn't lose much watching it - but I did like the matter-of-fact destruction portrayed, done without a lot of Hollywood hoo-rah about it ... quite a lot like real life, it seemed to me. Underplayed for a good reason.

Jazz - fair enough. I think the movie had two strikes on it in my mind because I REALLY DO NOT LIKE THAT ACTOR!!! He almost spoiled the movie "Scent of a Women" single-handidly!

There is SOMETHING about that guy that bothers me, but I can't for the life of me put my finger on it.

One day before the official national release date my local Blockbuster told me they would have it the next day. They did not. Nor did the stores in Tampa. Nor did Hollywood. Nor did the Hollywood stores in Tampa.

I next called the corporate headquarters of Blockbuster where I received a case number upon registering my complaint. I then received two phone calls from different Blockbuster representatives.

Apparently this district manager had made a decision not to stock the movie or at least to relegate it to an "obscure title" as they referred to it. Which would mean one or two movies per store whenever they would arrive.

Anyway the following Tuesday there was both a DVD and VHS copy at my local store. The store manager called and asked me if I liked the movie. I said hell yes, one of the best ever. And I told her I would bet anything that if they ordered more copies that they would fly off the shelf.

You don't think they got me profiled or anything do ya?

I went to the Blockbuster webpage and it shows that movie is not available. So, **** Blockbuster. I joined netflix.com. They offer a 2 week free trial. Free shipping. So, I'll receive "Owning Mahowny" and two other movies
in a few days in the mail. And Blockbuster can go screw themselves.

Pretending'

I don't know why you wouldn't want her to see it. The movie's female lead character is the perfect model of behavior for every gambler's wife or girlfriend.

My wife is the perfect gambler's wife. She said "we have to watch this again. It's really good. I feel like I'm a movie star now, living with you."

I would have for sure watched it again just didn't have the time. She understood.

I am half way thru the DVD, very sad. I can honestly say I have never been like that. I don't think movies like this do us gamblers any favors. The moral majority think they need to protect us from ourselves and this flick perpetuates those ideas. Very, very sad.

I finally saw it today. Excellent movie. Almost as good as Rounders. Hoffman gave an Oscar worthy performance. I highly recommend it.
