The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) claimed Friday that it cannot produce Lois Lerner’s emails to and from the White House and other administration departments due to a supposed computer crash.

The IRS previously agreed to hand over all of the ex-IRS official’s emails from 2009 to 2011 to the House Ways and Means Committee, chaired by Rep. Dave Camp. But the IRS claimed Friday that it has Lerner’s emails to and from other IRS officials but it cannot produce emails to and from the Treasury and Justice Departments, the Federal Election Commission, or Democratic offices.

The IRS’ computer crash may go down in history next to the eighteen and a half minute gap in the Watergate tapes, which was supposedly caused by a mistake by Richard Nixon’s secretary Rose Mary Woods.

“The fact that I am just learning about this, over a year into the investigation, is completely unacceptable and now calls into question the credibility of the IRS’s response to Congressional inquiries,” Camp said in a statement. “There needs to be an immediate investigation and forensic audit by Department of Justice as well as the Inspector General.”

“Just a short time ago, Commissioner Koskinen promised to produce all Lerner documents,” Camp continued. “It appears now that was an empty promise. Frankly, these are the critical years of the targeting of conservative groups that could explain who knew what when, and what, if any, coordination there was between agencies. Instead, because of this loss of documents, we are conveniently left to believe that Lois Lerner acted alone. This failure of the IRS requires the White House, which promised to get to the bottom of this, to do an Administration-wide search and production of any emails to or from Lois Lerner. The Administration has repeatedly referred us back to the IRS for production of materials. It is clear that is wholly insufficient when it comes to determining the full scope of the violation of taxpayer rights.”

How can a single computer crash delete only emails?

Wouldn't there be more effects to this "Crash" then just emails to/from a specific person?

And aren't emails stored in servers and other places other then on a single computer?

Who in this country didn't believe that they would come up with a way to withhold the evidence that the White House is at least in on the whole thing. Sad that they had to use the new version of "the dog ate my homework" excuse. Think about it folks. The FBI can retrieve files from pretty much destroyed hard drives and track an email to any individual they want. Maybe her computer crashed but the entire Gov email certainly didn't. This is the biggest mierda de toro story I've ever seen shamefully perpetrated on the people

I find this very difficult to believe. If true, it is impossible to defend. This is turning out to be one of the most incompetent administrations in generations. One thing after another, there is no end to the screw ups. Not sure if a document dump on a Friday evening will help this story. Liberals and progressives too, should be outraged at the lack of transparency and gaffes with our liberties that this administration continues to abuse.

Anybody with a brain knows it's a blatant lie. Government data is backed up the wazoo on multiple servers.

Why does this regime keep getting away with one felony after another???

BOOM! IRS Commissioner testified in March that they had Lois Lerner emails and would supply them to Congress

If you want to bury a story, drop it on Friday afternoon. That’s why the IRS revealed today that they “accidentally” deleted the Lois Lerner emails that could have shed some light on how and why the Tea Party targeting was coordinated. In response, House Rep. Jason Chaffetz tweeted out this video of his grilling of the IRS Commissioner in March where he said those emails were in their possession, and repeated over and over that they would indeed hand them over to Congress.

Watch below:

Here’s Chaffetz tweet with the entire video exchange:

IRS Commissioner testified in March Lois Lerner emails were archived. Here is the video #IRS http://youtu.be/Ax6QGmKhRwo

What’s really galling is how arrogant the commissioner is about the subpoena as if Chaffetz is being completely unreasonable, when three months later he’s absolutely proven right.

Not a problem, the NSA should have all of them.

Exactly. In any case, it's weak sauce. There has to be backups. I think the whole IRS crap is bogus, and they did nothing wrong, but this doesn't help their case any. They must provide Proof that they were working on this "crash" before this investigation even started. Why are we just hearing about this crash now? Has this been alleged before?
I know when my computer crashed, or had a problem at work, I called it in immediately. Surely they have records that Lerner did the same with their IT department. The original IRS scandal was a fake scandal, IMO, but this would not be.

Here's a more complete youtube of the IRS commissioner and his BS. This is disgusting. He would have had to know Lerner's Computer crashed in 2011 when giving his testimony in 2014. And the IRS Commissioner also states that his own E Mails weren't stored on his computer, they're all stored "somewhere", so why would Lerner's computer "crashing" make any difference to hers being lost?

just another innocent mistake

country is being run by the Daley Crime Syndicate, which just happens to have their corporate headquarters located in Chicago

coincidence? I think not

and I used to think Obama always getting his opponents divorce records unsealed so he can find some dirt was wrong, that was chump change

Obama's boys make the Clinton's look like angels, and even Democrats boast about the Clinton machine

Sharyl Atkinson is a partisan, ideological Hack. BUT, she is exactly right about this issue and the questions that need to be asked. I expect this to explode into a very big and troubling situation for the IRS and Lerner very soon. If the right is smart, they will push hard on the ridiculousness of this crash, without trying to tie in the White House or other unfounded aspects, because then they just come off as partisan shills as always. Just concentrate on the absurdity and obvious lie about the crash itself, and let that investigation take them where it takes them.

Lois Lerner’s Lost Emails: Questions for the IRS

The news came late in the day on Friday the 13th.
According to the House Ways and Means Committee, the IRS reports having “lost” former IRS manager Lois Lerner’s emails to and from other IRS employees sent between January of 2009 and April of 2011 due to a ‘computer crash.’
In light of the disclosure, these are some of the logical requests that should be made of the IRS:

  • Please provide a timeline of the crash and documentation covering when it was first discovered and by whom; when, how and by whom it was learned that materials were lost; the official documentation reporting the crash and federal data loss; documentation reflecting all attempts to recover the materials; and the remediation records documenting the fix. This material should include the names of all officials and technicians involved, as well as all internal communications about the matter.
  • Please provide all documents and emails that refer to the crash from the time that it happened through the IRS’ disclosure to Congress Friday that it had occurred.
  • Please provide the documents that show the computer crash and lost data were appropriately reported to the required entities including any contractor servicing the IRS. If the incident was not reported, please explain why.
  • Please provide a list summarizing what other data was irretrievably lost in the computer crash. If the loss involved any personal data, was the loss disclosed to those impacted? If not, why?
  • Please provide documentation reflecting any security analyses done to assess the impact of the crash and lost materials. If such analyses were not performed, why not?
  • Please provide documentation showing the steps taken to recover the material, and the names of all technicians who attempted the recovery.
  • Please explain why redundancies required for federal systems were either not used or were not effective in restoring the lost materials, and provide documentation showing how this shortfall has been remediated.
  • Please provide any documents reflecting an investigation into how the crash resulted in the irretrievable loss of federal data and what factors were found to be responsible for the existence of this situation.
  • I would also ask for those who discovered and reported the crash to testify under oath, as well as any officials who reported the materials as having been irretrievably lost.
The Committee had requested the Lerner emails as part of its investigation into to the targeting of conservative non-profits by the IRS. The Obama administration has denied any corruption or intentional wrongdoing. Lerner took the Fifth when asked to testify to Congress. The House of Representatives subsequently held her in contempt. The lost materials are said to include any communications that may have occurred between Lerner and outside agencies or groups such as the White House, the Treasury Department, the Department of Justice, the Federal Elections Commission and the offices of Democrats.
House and Ways Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) says that along with providing news of the emails that have been lost, the IRS suggested in the same letter to Congress that it end its investigation.
The late disclosure of the lost emails may be reason to disregard the suggestion.
