Auburn at Louisiana State

Lofty preseason predictions for Auburn are being reevaluated following a near-loss to FCS Jacksonville State, and the team doesn’t have much time to get things right. No. 15 Auburn will try to bounce back quickly when it opens SEC play at No. 14 LSU in a battle of Tigers on Saturday.

Auburn squeezed by Louisville in its opener and needed overtime to pull out a 27-20 victory over Jacksonville State last week, but Jeremy Johnson’s five interceptions in the two games don’t seem to be a big concern. “It’s football, interceptions are going to happen,” Johnson told reporters. “All the greats throw interceptions. I feel really good about where this team is at and where I’m at. I have a lot of confidence in myself and so does my team.” LSU got only 71 passing yards from Brandon Harris last week but managed pull out a 21-19 win at Mississippi State behind Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette’s three touchdowns. The sophomore rumbled to a career-high 159 yards in that game and is going up against an Auburn defense that surrendered 399 yards on the ground in its first two games.

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS. LINE: LSU -7.5

ABOUT AUBURN (2-0, 0-0 SEC): While the Tigers are fielding repeated questions about Johnson’s ability to the lead offense, the defense is facing a challenge as well after starting defensive back Josh Holsey was lost for the season due to a left ACL tear. Auburn will have three freshmen, a sophomore and a pair of transfers in the rotation of defensive backs on Saturday. “We're always talking to our team about the next man up, about that No. 2 or No. 3 guy,” Auburn coach Gus Malzahn told reporters. “You've got to be prepared when you're called upon, and we're going to be counting on some young guys. The positive with that is you've got a chance to grow and get better.”

ABOUT LSU (1-0, 1-0):
The Tigers had their opener cancelled due to weather and jumped right into the thick of SEC play with the date Mississippi State last weekend, announcing their intention to dominate the line of scrimmage. LSU ran for a total of 266 yards in the win while holding the Bulldogs to 43 on the ground. Fournette was not so explosive at Auburn last season, when he was held to 42 yards on 10 carries in a game LSU lost 41-7.

EXTRA POINTS

1. The home team has taken 13 of the last 15 meetings between the teams.

2. LSU is 5-1 when Fournette rushes for 100 yards.

3. Auburn RB Peyton Barber is the 22nd player in school history to rush for at least 100 yards in back-to-back games.

G.T.-Notre Dame

Notre Dame looked capable of competing for a playoff spot behind Malik Zaire but is reassessing expectations after the promising quarterback was lost for the season. The 10th-ranked Fighting Irish not only need to figure out their quarterback situation but must find a way to stop the run when No. 16 Georgia Tech visits on Saturday.

DeShone Kizer came on in relief of Zaire (fractured ankle) last week and tossed a pair of touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 12 seconds left in a 34-27 victory at Virginia. “I think DeShone will do quite well,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly told reporters. “We'll just feature some of the things that he does a little bit better than maybe - or that are considered his strengths as a quarterback and feature those.” Kizer and the Fighting Irish will try to keep pace with the Yellow Jackets’ prolific offense, which piled up a total of 134 points in wins over Tulane and Alcorn State to begin the season. "It is going to be a step up,” Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson told reporters of the competition level increase this week. “We just have to go do our thing. It does not matter. It is as much about us as it is who we play.”

TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, NBC. LINE: Georgia Tech -2.5

ABOUT GEORGIA TECH (2-0): The Yellow Jackets are one of a handful of teams running a triple-option offense and executed it two perfection in the first two weeks, putting up a total of 915 yards on the ground. Marcus Marshall (221 yards) and Patrick Skov (122) are leading the charge, but 13 different players have at least two rushing attempts for Georgia Tech, including quarterback Justin Thomas (13 carries for 73 yards). “Our guys are pretty much team-oriented and they know that sooner or later it will be their turn,” Johnson told reporters. “And, when it is their turn, they have got to be ready.”

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (2-0): Kizer will be without one of his safety blankets the rest of the way as starting tight end Durham Smythe was lost for the year to a knee injury late in the win over Virginia. Smythe caught a touchdown pass before going down, and the Irish will rotate four different tight ends in his place. “I think you'll see them all play, no question,” Kelly told reporters. “I don't think there is just one guy. I think Durham was able to do a lot of different things, so now I think you'll see we'll go deeper with the tight ends.”

EXTRA POINTS

1. Georgia Tech has rushed for at least 200 yards in 16 straight games.

2. Fighting Irish RB C.J. Prosise has rushed for 253 yards in the first two games.

3. The Yellow Jackets average the fewest penalty yards (12) in the nation through the first two weeks.

Miss-Alabama

Ole Miss is putting up eye-popping offensive numbers through two games, but the 11th-ranked Rebels will face a stiffer test when they travel to No. 2 Alabama for an SEC West showdown on Saturday. The Crimson Tide have never lost back-to-back games in the series and are 25-1 at home against the Rebels.

Last year’s 23-17 home win over top-ranked Alabama marked Ole Miss’ first in the long-running series since 2003. A repeat performance would validate the Rebels’ red-hot start – they’ve outscored their first two opponents 149-24 – and perhaps make them the favorites in the SEC West. Alabama quietly dispatched Wisconsin 35-17 in its opener before cruising to a 37-10 win over Middle Tennessee last week and will have a raucous home crowd fueled by the hype of hosting ESPN’s College GameDay. The Crimson Tide have won 17 consecutive home games, tied with Baylor for the longest active streak in the nation.
TV: 9:15 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Alabama -6.5.

ABOUT OLE MISS (2-0, 0-0 SEC): The Rebels returned most of the key parts from last year’s outstanding defense, but the offense was something of a question. Quarterback Chad Kelly (557 yards, 6 TDs, 1 INT) has provided a resounding answer, and the Rebels have surrounded him with numerous weapons. The outrageous offensive output has overshadowed the defense, which has lived up to expectations thus far by holding opponents to 303 yards per game even with reserves getting plenty of playing time during mop-up duty.
ABOUT ALABAMA (2-0, 0-0): The Crimson Tide have held their first two opponents under 300 total yards and have been especially stingy against the run, allowing 63 yards per game on the ground. Alabama has enjoyed the luxury of being rather one-dimensional on offense with Derrick Henry (243 yards, 6 TDs) and Kenyan Drake (117 yards, 1 TD) carrying the load. Quarterback Jake Coker (427 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT) might be asked to do more in order to keep pace with Ole Miss’ high-powered attack.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Alabama has won 32 consecutive games in August and September dating to 2007.

2. Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche has scored two offensive TDs (one rush, one receiving) and FS Trae Elston has returned two interceptions for scores among the Rebels’ three defensive TDs.

3. Alabama has scored in the first half of 105 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the nation, and has gone 185 consecutive games without being shut out.

Stanford-USC

After dominating its first two games against subpar opposition, No. 7 USC takes a step up in competition Saturday when the Trojans host Stanford, which bounced back from its season-opening loss at Northwestern with a 31-7 win over UCF last week. The past five meetings between the Pac-12 rivals have all been decided by eight points or fewer.

USC rolled past Arkansas State and Idaho by a combined score of 114-15 as senior quarterback Cody Kessler launched his Heisman Trophy campaign by throwing seven touchdowns with no interceptions. The Trojans face their first real test against Stanford, which leads the conference in total defense and limited Kessler to 135 passing yards in last season’s 13-10 USC win. Kessler has no shortage of weapons surrounding him, including the dynamic running back trio of Ronald Jones II, Tre Madden and Justin Davis. Stanford is averaging just 3.2 yards per rush, but senior quarterback Kevin Hogan is coming off a strong outing against UCF last week when he threw for a career-high 341 yards and three scores.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: USC -10

ABOUT STANFORD (1-1): Following its lackluster offensive effort against Northwestern, the Cardinal had six plays over 20 yards against UCF and may have found the perfect complement to speedy Christian McCaffrey in freshman running back Bryce Love, who accounted for 143 yards and a touchdown. Stanford’s young secondary could struggle against the Trojans’ wide receivers, but linebackers Blake Martinez, Peter Kalambayi and Kevin Anderson should help limit the damage. Stanford has held USC to 68.3 rushing yards per game and 2.3 yards per carry in the last three games between the teams.

ABOUT USC (2-0): Kessler’s many targets include 3-way performer Adoree’ Jackson and JuJu Smith-Schuster, who is drawing high praise with 14 receptions for 281 yards and three touchdowns through two games. “As good as he was last year, you can just tell now he’s got even more savvy,” Stanford coach David Shaw told reporters. “He's one of those guys, he’s just fun to watch as a football fan. It's crazy to look at him and say he’s a sophomore.” The defense has been overshadowed by the offense early but features plenty of playmakers, including Jackson and Kevon Seymour in the secondary along with linebacker Su’a Cravens and nose tackle Antwaun Woods.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Stanford has held opponents to 20 or fewer points in 33 of its past 43 games.

2. USC has gone 27-10-1 in its last 38 games against the Cardinal.

3. Stanford is 39-5 in games played in California since 2010.

Nebraska-Miami

Miami’s Joseph Yearby and Nebraska’s Terrell Newby each had to wait their turn as Duke Johnson and Ameer Abdullah were making history at their respective programs a year ago, but both players looked a lot like their predecessors in their last time out. A pair of talented running backs coming off career days eye an encore performance on Saturday when Newby and the Cornhuskers make a rare regular-season visit to Florida to face Yearby and the Hurricanes.

Johnson needed only three seasons to become the leading rusher in Miami history before declaring for the NFL Draft while Abdullah wrapped up his senior year as the second-leading rusher in school history at Nebraska. Yearby exploded for a career-high 243 total yards and scored the tiebreaking touchdown midway through the third quarter as the Hurricanes pulled away from Florida Atlantic last Friday 44-20. Newby set personal bests across the board in Nebraska’s 48-9 rout of South Alabama, accounting for 236 scrimmage yards and three total touchdowns as the Cornhuskers rebounded from a heartbreaking home loss to BYU the week before. Nebraska, which defeated Miami 41-31 in Lincoln last year to pull ahead 6-5 in the all-time series, will play its first regular-season game in the Sunshine State since these same schools met for the first time in 1951.
TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN2. LINE: Miami -3.5

ABOUT NEBRASKA (1-1): The defensive spotlight for this contest figures to focus on the secondary, which has given up eight pass plays of at least 21 yards and is allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete 59.3 percent of their attempts. “This week at practice, I felt like the big emphasis for us is going to be deep-ball coverage … We have to learn how to assert ourselves early so teams later in the game don’t want to take those deep-ball shots,” secondary coach Brian Stewart told the Lincoln Journal-Star. The inability to defend the deep ball has contributed greatly to the Cornhuskers’ 120th-ranked pass defense.
ABOUT MIAMI (2-0): While top receivers Stacy Coley and Braxton Berrios are expected back after each sat out against Florida Atlantic, linebacker Darrion Owens (knee) joined running back Gus Edwards (foot) as key contributors that will miss the rest of the season. Yearby is getting plenty of help from Mark Walton, who became only the third Miami freshman in the last 20 years to rush for three TDs in a game last weekend. Sophomore Brad Kaaya (15 straight games) and former Hurricane great Ken Dorsey (23 and 17) are the only Miami quarterbacks in the last 20 years to throw for at least one score in 15 consecutive contests.

EXTRA POINTS
1. Nebraska was the only team to exceed its season total-yard average against Miami’s 14th-ranked total defense a season ago. The Hurricanes rank eighth in FBS in total defense through two games in 2015.
2. Miami has forced seven turnovers – tied for the most in the country – in its first two contests for the first time since 2004.
