THURSDAY 1-1 +1.70 UNITS

Taking a pass on Friday and will be out of town most of this weekend!!! Here are some of the game that I like so far!!!

7 Units Ohio State -6.5 -106

If you thought Penn State bottomed out by going 3-9 in 2003, think again. The Nittany Lions are still one win short of even that meager win total in 2004, and prospects for a sudden revival are getting more bleak by the week. Penn State (0-3 SU, 1-2 ATS on the road) simply cannot score, averaging 6 points per game on the road! On the season, they have registered 119 points in seven games. That's a mediocre 17 ppg. But consider that 85 of those points came in the two wins against lower level MAC entries Akron and UCF. Against everyone else, the Lions are averaging a pathetic 6.4 ppg. It can't get any worse that last Saturday's astonishing 6-4 home loss against Iowa. Things got so bad the Hawkeyes were willing to take an intentional safety that put Penn State within range to win the game with a field goal. That's how little regard there is for this "attack" right now. QB Zack Mills has been awful but is the best of the Penn State QBs right now, and he took a concussion in the Iowa loss. With him, maybe the Lions can score once against Ohio State. Without him, a whitewash is entirely possible. The overworked Penn State defense continues to perform at a very high level, but will eventually wear down. Look for the Penn State troubles to continue this weekend. Ohio State has QB concerns, with QB Justin Zwick (shoulder) hurting, so they may have to go to backup QB Troy Smith (4 TDs, no INTs). Also, RB Lydell Ross (343 yards) is awaiting a possible suspension and may not play. Still, the Buckeyes are 19-1 SU, 12-7-1 ATS their last 20 home games. Ohio State is finally off a good game and should make it two straight without much difficulty this Saturday.

Good Luck Today,

5 Units Wake Forest -17 -107

When assessing the chances of Wake Forest straight up and against the spread, you have to look first at the opposing run defense, as the Demon Deacons have a powerful ground attack. And Duke is terrible, allowing 238 yards rushing per game and a whopping 5 yards per carry! Last week Virginia was able to run for 348 yards on Duke, 5.7 ypc. Wake will be able to run all day, which is their strength. The Duke (1-6 SU, 4-2 ATS) offense can't run (114 yrpg) or pass (144 yppg), so Wake will be able to control the ball and the clock. Wake Forest (3-4 SU, 4-2 ATS) is 2-1 ATS at home where they are holding opponents to just 14 points per game. After facing the defenses of BC, NC State, Virginia Tech and Florida State the last four games (and playing well, 3-1 ATS), facing the Duke defense will be a breeze! Wake won 42-13 at Duke last year as a 10-point favorite and should have just as one-sided a game here against a worse Duke team.

3 Units Syracuse -3 +100

Connecticut had one of its best offensive games of the season as Dan Orlovsky was 18 of 26 for 260 yards and two touchdowns with one interception in a 45-31 win over Temple. Cornell Brockington rushed for 185 yards on only 15 carries while fumbling twice and Larry Taylor scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff. However, UConn bettors still lost on the backdoor cover as the Huskies were up 31-7 at the half but four turnovers along with what coach Randy Edsell called “the defense running out of gas” caused Temple to make it respectable in the second half. Surprisingly this is only Uconn’s second road game this season and if their first contest away from home is any indication then the Huskies are in trouble. They lost 27-7 at Boston College in a miserable performance on national television as they missed several opportunities to score after opening the game with a fumble on the kickoff which led to a B.C. score. Syracuse lost at West Virginia last week and the Orange are now 4-40 ATS when they lose on the road. Running back Walter Reyes did not play due to flu-like symptoms but quarterback Perry Patterson stepped up and finished 23 of 37 for 249 yards but had trouble punching it into the end zone. Syracuse has been a much better team at home this season with wins over Buffalo, Cincinnati and Rutgers and a close loss to Florida State. The return of Reyes and the home field give the edge to Syracuse in this encounter.

10 Units Army -3 -102

Army (2-4 SU, 4-2 ATS) has had two weeks to rest, prepare and celebrate. Yes, the Cadets are riding a 2-game win streak, beating Cincinnati 48-29 and winning 42-35 at South Florida. They were +15 dogs in both games! Coach Bobby Ross has been able to jumpstart the offense, as Army is averaging 25 points and 193 rushing yards per game. East Carolina (1-5 SU, 2-4 ATS) looks just as bad as last season when they were 1-11 SU. The Pirates lost to Southern Miss 51-10. QB James Pinkney completed 18-of-33 pass attempts for 181 yards and one score for East Carolina, which has lost five of its first six matchups. Chris Johnson led the Pirates with seven receptions for 73 yards and one touchdown. The Southern Mississippi defense was extremely fierce throughout the contest, holding the Pirates to just 178 total yards and 14 first downs. The unit, which held ECU to minus-three yards rushing, also recorded eight sacks and allowed the Pirates to convert just 4-of-14 third-down attempts. East Carolina can't stop the run, allowing 242 yards rushing each game, 4.8 yards per carry! Army will be able to run the ball all day and take revenge for last year's 38-32 East Carolina victory (yes, EC's ONLY win in 2003). Rejuvenated Army will have no trouble.

5 Units Kansas -4 -102

Kansas needed more than a bye week off before facing the undefeated Oklahoma Sooners who defeated the Jayhawks 41-10 Saturday. Adam Barmann completed 12-of-22 passes for 160 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for the Jayhawks (3-4 SU, 5-2 ATS), who trailed by just four points at the intermission. The Oklahoma offense dominated the game by winning the difference in total net offense, 507-256. Kansas' defense kept the game close for a while, but the Sooners used three Jayhawks' turnovers to score or set up touchdowns and turn the game into a blowout in the second half. Iowa State (3-4 SU, 3-3 ATS) held on to a 26-25 victory over hapless Baylor on Saturday. Bret Meyer completed 12-of-18 passes for 148 yards in the victory, while Jason Scales led Iowa State in rushing with 54 yards and a score on 12 carries. An easy win for the Jayhawks over Iowa State 36-7 a year ago should be closer this time around, but not by that much.

5 Units Florida State -10.5 -102

ACC battle between two outstanding defenses. It's going to be tough for a floundering Maryland offense (7, 3 and 7 points the last three games) to score on a brilliant Florida State defense. The Seminoles (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) have good balance on offense (198 yards rushing, 195 yards passing per game) behind sophomore QB Wyatt Sexton. RB Leon Washington (609 yds, 7.2 yds per carry, 6 TDs) won't play (shoulder), but they still have speedy RB Lorenzo Booker (562 yards). The FSU defense is allowing just 16 points and 68 yds rushing pg (2.13 yards per carry allowed). That run ‘D’ is No. 2 in the nation. Florida State is 4-1 UNDER the total and 3-0 UNDER the total on the road. The Maryland Terrapins (3-4 SU, 3-4 ATS) are frustrated, with a struggling offense behind sophomore QB Joel Statham (7 TDs, 7 INTs). The good ‘D’ and bad offense is why Maryland is 5-1 UNDER the total. Maryland is also 0-5 ATS its last 5 against Florida State. The last 5 years FSU has whipped Maryland 35-10, 37-10, 52-31, 59-7, 49-10. Last week, Maryland gained more total yards against Clemson (194) than it had the previous two weeks combined...and still lost, 10-7. The loss squandered another impressive defensive effort by Maryland, which had five sacks and held the Tigers to 36 yards rushing. "I'm angry every week, and I'm tired of losing," Coach Ralph Friedgen said. "Especially when we have this game won. We shot ourselves in the foot." Don't look for an offensive shootout.

5 Units Tennessee U pk -104

Last year this contest was one of the great SEC games of the year as Tennessee pulled out a 23-20 SU, overtime victory against South Carolina. This year, the game could be just as good as Tennessee (6-1 SU, 3-4 ATS) travels to South Carolina (5-2 SU, 4-2 ATS). Last week, Tennessee pulled out a tough win against Alabama, 17-13 SU. In that game, Tennessee only managed 195 yards of offense, and just 63 yards rushing against an awesome Bama defense. South Carolina's defense may not be quite as good, but they are certainly formidable. The Gamecocks are only permitting 278 yards of total offense, and amazingly only 168 yards of that is through the air. Offensively, these teams are identical. Tennessee gains one more yard per game than the Gamecocks (378 to 377). One concern is that South Carolina QB Dondrelle Pinkins (shoulder) is doubtful. QB Syvelle Newton stepped in last week along with Mike Rath. Newton has 4 TDs, 2 picks this season and 781 passing yards. The problem for Tennessee is that they do turn the ball over (-4 TO ratio) as a result of the play of Freshmen QBs and RBs. This could be the difference as the Gamecocks hold a (+6) turnover ratio and will smack you on defense. Coach Holtz has had two weeks to prepare for the Volunteers and a win here could send the Gamecocks to a pretty good bowl game. However, Tennessee is 13-2 SU, 10-4-1 ATS its last 15 road games! The Gamecocks have only gone Over the total once this year (1-4 O/U). Look for a tough battle just like last year's barnburner.
