Preview: Mariners at Royals

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

Robinson Cano is the 63rd player in major-league history to reach 500 career doubles and looks to add to that total on Saturday, when the Seattle Mariners visit the Kansas City Royals for the third contest of their four-game set. The 34-year-old Cano laced his historic two-base hit into right-field corner during Friday's 5-2 victory that evened the series at one win apiece.

Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz is questionable for Saturday after being scratched from the triumph due to neck spasms. The Mariners made up for the absence of their power hitter by stealing three bases as they moved within 1 1/2 games of the Royals for the American League's second wild-card spot. Kansas City is sliding in the wrong direction with four setbacks in five games and has scored just 11 runs during that stretch - with six coming in the lone victory. Eric Hosmer, who is 7-for-17 against Seattle's scheduled Saturday starter Felix Hernandez, is hitless in eight at-bats in the series after going 15-for-34 during an eight-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), FSN Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (5-4, 4.28 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-6, 3.42)

Hernandez has allowed four runs in each of his last two starts and is winless over his last three turns. The 31-year-old, who has been supplanted as the team's ace by the red-hot James Paxton, is allowing opponents to hit .273 against him - the second-worst average of his 13-year career. Hernandez lost to the Royals on July 4, when he gave up six runs - five earned - and six hits over six innings to fall to 5-6 with a 3.05 ERA in 14 career starts against them.

Duffy settled for a no-decision against Baltimore in his last turn after giving up one run for the third time in his last four outings. The 28-year-old has struck out 27 batters while walking only two over his last five starts and has issued just 29 free passes in 17 outings this season. Duffy recorded the win over Hernandez last month, when he gave up two runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings and is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) versus Seattle.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners CF Jarrod Dyson is 4-for-7 with two stolen bases in the series against his former club.

2. Royals C Salvador Perez (right side) departed after striking out in the sixth inning and underwent an MRI exam, with MGR Ned Yost saying his status won't be known until Saturday.

3. Seattle C Mike Zunino is hitless in seven at-bats (four strikeouts) in the series and 1-for-18 over his last seven contests.

PREDICTION: Royals 4, Mariners 2

Preview: Phillies at Rockies

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Colorado Rockies have been excelling at home of late and hope to continue doing so when they host the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Colorado posted its ninth win in 11 contests at Coors Field on Friday, rallying for a 4-3 triumph in the opener after squandering a two-run lead after one inning.

DJ LeMahieu delivered an RBI single in the eighth to snap a tie that was created a frame earlier by Nolan Arenado's solo homer as the Rockies maintained their 5 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee for the second wild card in the National League. LeMahieu has gone 13-for-28 during his seven-game hitting streak while Arenado is 10-for-25 during his six-game run - a stretch in which he has collected eight RBIs to raise his major league-leading total to 97. After ending July with a five-game winning streak, Philadelphia has yet to record a victory in August, opening the month - and its eight-game road trip - with four straight losses. Nick Williams is swinging a hot bat for the Phillies as he is 6-for-8 with a homer and three RBIs in his last two contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Nick Pivetta (4-6, 5.42 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Jon Gray (3-2, 5.52)

Pivetta is coming off a triumph over Atlanta on Monday in which he gave up one run and three hits over six innings. The 24-year-old Canadian rookie has alternated wins and losses over his last six decisions and has yet to post back-to-back victories. Pivetta, who has yet to face Colorado, has gone two straight starts without allowing a home run after serving up a total of seven over his previous three turns.

Gray was saddled with the loss at Washington on Sunday after yielding three runs and four hits - two homers - in seven innings. The 25-year-old Oklahoman has yet to lose at home this season, going 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in three outings. Gray made his only two career starts against Philadelphia last year and went 0-1 while surrendering nine runs - eight earned - over 10 2/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Phillies optioned INF Ty Kelly to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and recalled Jorge Alfaro from the IronPigs as fellow C Andrew Knapp is day-to-day with a bruised right hand.

2. Colorado LHP Kyle Freeland, who leads all major-league rookies in wins (11), exited Friday's game after throwing only 11 pitches due to an apparent groin injury.

3. Philadelphia recalled Ricardo Pinto from Lehigh Valley after optioning fellow RHP Jake Thompson after Thursday's loss to the Los Angeles Angels.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Giants

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

Paul Goldschmidt is swinging a hot bat and seeks his eighth multi-hit performance in 11 games when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Francisco Giants on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Goldschmidt went 3-for-4 with two RBIs as Arizona posted a 2-1 win in the series opener - one day after clubbing a career-best three homers and driving in six in a victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Goldschmidt, a five-time All-Star and two-time National League MVP runner-up, is 17-for-34 with four homers and 13 RBIs over his last 10 games. Arizona has won three consecutive contests while holding possession of the NL's top wild-card spot by one-half game over Colorado. San Francisco notched just three hits in the opener to lose for the sixth time in eight games and will be without Brandon Belt on Saturday after he was hit in the head with a pitch and dealing with concussion symptoms. "I'm sure this is probably scaring him a little bit because he’s been through this," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters of what would be Belt's fourth diagnosed concussion. "It’s not a lot of fun going through one, and now he's going through another. I'm sure he's got some concerns, as we do."

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, FSN Arizona, NBCSN Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Taijuan Walker (6-5, 3.55 ERA) vs. Giants RH Chris Stratton (0-2, 7.71)

Walker is 0-2 in a six-start stretch since last winning on June 21 against Colorado. The 24-year-old struck out 10 - one shy of his season high - in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis in his last turn while he gave up three runs and four hits en route to the loss. Walker is 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA in three career starts against the Giants, with the loss occurring on April 10 as he gave up three runs - two earned - and five hits over five frames.

Stratton will be making his second start and fifth appearance of the season for the Giants. The 26-year-old lost to Detroit on July 6, when he gave up five runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings as a late fill-in for the injured Johnny Cueto. Stratton walked five in the loss to the Tigers and has issued 13 free passes in 24 major-league innings over the last two seasons.

WALK-OFFS

1. Giants C Buster Posey was 0-for-3 on Friday and is in a homerless drought that spans 20 games.

2. Arizona OF J.D. Martinez is 1-for-13 - the hit being a home run - with seven strikeouts in four contests this month.

3. San Francisco CF Denard Span is just 3-for-25 over his last six games.

Preview: Athletics at Angels

Gracenote

Aug 5, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels won their series opener against the Oakland Athletics to even their record at .500 and, more importantly, climb within two games of the second wild card in the American League. Los Angeles attempts to continue its ascent when it hosts Oakland on Saturday for the middle contest of the three-game set.

The Angels overcame a four-run deficit in the series opener, scoring twice in the sixth inning and four times in the seventh en route to an 8-6 triumph. Superstar Mike Trout has been red-hot at the plate as he is 13-for-30 during a seven-game hitting streak that features five multi-hit performances. Oakland managed only six hits as it lost for the sixth time in seven road contests, although five were for extra bases. Rookie Matt Chapman belted a three-run homer, his seventh blast of the season, while Khris Davis recorded two doubles and a pair of RBIs as the Athletics suffered their seventh consecutive defeat at Angel Stadium.

TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, NBCSN California (Oakland), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Paul Blackburn (2-1, 3.05 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (1-1, 3.99)

Blackburn came away with a victory against San Francisco on Monday despite yielding five runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings. The 23-year-old rookie from California has gone two straight outings without allowing a home run after serving up one in each of his previous three turns. Blackburn, who will be facing Los Angeles for the first time, is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in three major-league starts on the road.

Skaggs will be making his sixth start of the season and first since April 28 due to an oblique injury. The 26-year-old Californian was tagged for five runs in each of his first two outings this year before giving up a total of three in 19 innings over his next three turns, but he recorded just one victory in that span. Skaggs suffered his only loss of 2017 at Oakland on April 6, when he surrendered five runs on five hits and three walks over 5 1/3 frames in falling to 0-2 in three career starts against the Athletics.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels recalled RHP Daniel Wright from Triple-A Salt Lake and designated OF Ramon Flores for assignment.

2. Oakland claimed C Dustin Garneau off waivers - he batted .206 with a homer and six RBIs in 22 games with Colorado..

3. Los Angeles RHP Garrett Richards (biceps) threw off a mound on Friday for the first time since April 5 and still hopes to return this season despite needing approximately six weeks to build his arm strength.
