GAME: Atlanta Braves (51-61) at St. Louis Cardinals (59-56)

Preview: Braves at Cardinals
Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

Despite the crowded landscape at the top of the National League Central, the St. Louis Cardinals continue to focus on themselves entering Saturday’s middle contest of a three-game home series against the Atlanta Braves. The Cardinals pounced on the Braves in the early innings in Friday’s series opener and held on for an 8-5 victory to remain one game behind the Central-leading Chicago Cubs.

St. Louis has won seven games in a row to surge toward the top of the division standings, powered by two hits and two RBIs from right fielder Randal Grichuk as well as two hits and three RBIs from shortstop Paul DeJong in the series opener. St. Louis reached the Atlanta bullpen for two runs in 5 1/3 innings after jumping all over starter Mike Foltynewicz, extending its streak of scoring eight or more runs in victories to six in a row (the longest streak in the majors since the Braves did it in 2006). Atlanta rookie second baseman Ozzie Albies finished 2-for-4, blasting a three-run homer in the sixth inning. The Braves (51-62) have lost 17 of their past 23 games and are a season-worst 11 games below .500.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FSN South (Atlanta), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Lucas Sims (0-2, 5.25 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Carlos Martinez (8-9, 3.52)

Despite a rough first inning in his second major-league start Sunday – in which he gave up four runs – Sims settled down to throw scoreless ball across the next five innings in a loss to Miami. The 23-year-old has surrendered seven of the 12 hits allowed through two starts on two-strike counts. Sims, who has pitched six innings in each of his first two turns, will make the first road start of his career in this outing.

Martinez earned his second All-Star berth in the past three years with a stellar first half but has struggled recently while posting a 5.14 ERA in his last seven starts. The 25-year-old won at Kansas City in his last start Monday, giving up two runs on solo homers among the seven hits he allowed over eight otherwise impressive innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Martinez, who is 5-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 11 home outings, is 2-1 in seven career appearances (three starts) against Atlanta with a 3.32 ERA.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cardinals have won all four meetings this season by at least two runs, outscoring the Braves 29-12.

2. One game after his 13-game hitting streak ended, Braves CF Ender Inciarte finished 2-for-3 with a walk.

3. The Cardinals set a franchise mark for most consecutive victories when scoring eight or more runs Friday, surpassing the old record set from Sept. 18-23, 1925.

PREDICTION: Cardinals 5, Braves 2

GAME: Houston Astros (71-43) at Texas Rangers (54-59)

Preview: Astros at Rangers
Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

The Houston Astros are sliding in the wrong direction as they enter the middle contest of their three-game set against the host Texas Rangers on Saturday. Houston's 6-4 loss in the series opener was its fourth in a row and 10th in 13 games, and its lead for the best record in the American League is just six games over Boston.

The Astros have been outscored 24-12 during their four-game skid, which began with three straight losses to the lowly Chicago White Sox. George Springer belted his 28th homer on Friday but first since July 7, missing 13 games during the drought with a quadriceps injury. Texas has won consecutive games but still is four below .500 and three off the pace in the race for the AL's second wild-card spot. Elvis Andrus went 3-for-4 and scored three runs in the opener for his fourth three-hit performance in the last eight games.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), FSN Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Mike Fiers (7-6, 4.06 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Tyson Ross (2-2, 7.52)

Fiers allowed five runs - four earned - and four hits in six innings of a no-decision against Toronto on Sunday after losing his previous two decisions. The 32-year-old is 5-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 11 road outings this season. Fiers is 0-1 with a 6.56 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against the Rangers, including a no-decision earlier this season in which he gave up five runs and seven hits over six frames.

Ross is slated to be activated from the disabled list to make his first start since July 23. The 30-year-old has been dealing with a blister on his right index finger but appeared ready to return in his last rehab outing, when he allowed one run and four hits over seven innings for Double-A Frisco. Ross lost his lone career start against the Astros as he allowed four runs and five hits over five frames in 2015 while with San Diego.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers 1B Joey Gallo was hitless in four at-bats on Friday after homering in each of his previous three games.

2. Houston C Brian McCann is just 3-for-33 over his last nine contests.

3. Texas 2B Rougned Odor is only 2-for-27 over his last eight games.

GAME: Chicago Cubs (59-54) at Arizona Diamondbacks (64-50)

Gracenote
Aug 12, 2017

Two teams that are feeling the heat from a charging St. Louis team square off Saturday as the Chicago Cubs visit the Arizona Diamondbacks for the middle contest of their three-game set. Chicago posted an 8-3 victory in Friday's series opener to avoid a three-game slide and maintain a one-game lead in the National League Central over the Cardinals, who have won seven in a row.

Kris Bryant led the Cubs' 11-hit attack by going 3-for-3, extending his hitting streak to eight games in the process. St. Louis also is closing in on Arizona, which has dropped three straight and seen its advantage of the Cardinals for the NL's second wild-card spot shrink to 4 1/2 games. Paul Goldschmidt hopes to continue his assault on Chicago pitching on Saturday as he has belted four home runs in his last two games against the Cubs. The slugger has registered 12 of his team-leading 91 RBIs over his last eight contests and is nine away from reaching the century mark for the third time in his career.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, WGN (Chicago), FSN Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Jon Lester (8-6, 3.97 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks LH Patrick Corbin (8-11, 4.76)

Lester extended his unbeaten streak to five starts on Sunday, when he allowed three runs and six hits over 6 2/3 innings against Washington in his second straight no-decision. The 33-year-old native of Washington has not lost on the road since May 28 at the Los Angeles Dodgers, going 4-0 in his last five turns away from home. Lester has yet to be defeated by Arizona as he is 2-0 despite sporting a 4.94 ERA in five career starts, including a no-decision on Aug. 1 in which he yielded three runs over four frames.

After winning his final two starts of July, Corbin has dropped both of his outings this month, surrendering 14 runs - 10 earned - and 17 hits over nine innings. Both setbacks came on the road, where the 28-year-old New Yorker is 2-8 with a 6.79 ERA in 11 turns this season. Corbin has made five career appearances (four starts) against the Cubs and won his first three decisions before being tagged for eight runs and 10 hits - three homers - in three frames opposite Lester at Chicago on Aug. 1.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Cubs recalled Victor Caratini from Triple-A Iowa after placing fellow C Willson Contreras (hamstring), who is expected to miss at least four weeks, on the 10-day disabled list.

2. Arizona traded RHP Ryan Burr, who was a fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft, to the Chicago White Sox for future considerations.

3. Cubs C Alex Avila has launched a two-run homer in two of his last three games.

The Baltimore Orioles attempt to bounce back from a failed opportunity when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series. Baltimore (57-59) was unable to reach the .500 mark for the season on Friday as it squandered a late lead and dropped a 5-4 decision.

Adam Jones homered for the second straight night and Jonathan Schoop drove in two runs to end a four-game drought and raise his team-leading total to 84 RBIs. The setback was the third in four contests for the Orioles, who are two games back of the Minnesota Twins in the race for the second wild-card spot in the American League. Oakland staged an eighth-inning rally to halt its three-game slide as Jed Lowrie delivered a game-tying RBI double before Chad Pinder lifted a sacrifice fly to plate the go-ahead run. The Athletics are 1-3 on their nine-game homestand while the Orioles are 2-3 on their 10-game road trip.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), NBCSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (11-8, 4.15 ERA) vs. Athletics LH Sean Manaea (8-6, 4.15)

Bundy has won each of his last three decisions, including a road triumph over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in which he gave up two runs and recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts over seven innings. The 24-year-old native of Oklahoma has yielded a total of two earned runs in 15 frames over his last two turns after surrendering 19 in 20 1/3 innings over his previous four outings. Bundy made his only career appearance against Oakland on May 7, 2016, when he allowed an unearned run and two hits in two innings of relief.

Manaea has permitted six runs while recording just one strikeout in each of his last two starts, losing once while seeing his winless streak reach four outings. The 25-year-old from Indiana has served up six home runs during his victory drought after allowing one over his previous five turns. Manaea will be facing Baltimore for the first time in his brief career.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics rookie 3B Matt Chapman was back in the lineup Friday, and struck out in all three at-bats after exiting Thursday's contest with an undisclosed illness.

2. Baltimore RHP Ubaldo Jimenez departed Friday's game in the sixth inning after being hit in the leg by a hard ground ball but hopes to make his next start.

3. Oakland recalled RHP Michael Brady and OF Boog Powell from Triple-A Nashville while optioning OFs Mark Canha and Jaycob Brugman to the Sounds.

Aug 12, 2017

For years an afterthought in the National League West, the San Diego Padres are showing the record-setting Los Angeles Dodgers why they could be a force in the division before too long. Rookie Manuel Margot is leading the charge for the rebuilding Padres, who continue their three-game series against the host Dodgers on Saturday.

Margot is batting .351 with three homers and six RBIs in 10 games against Los Angeles this season after helping snap the Dodgers’ eight-game home winning streak with two solo homers in Friday’s 4-3 victory. Los Angeles had won its previous 12 one-run games but came up empty against San Diego All-Star closer Brad Hand, who recorded a four-out save. Yasiel Puig (hamstring) returned to the Dodgers' lineup and walked three times while rookie star Cody Bellinger bounced back from an 0-for-5 effort with three hits and two RBIs. Yasmani Grandal has recorded three hits in his last 22 at-bats and has missed the last two games due to back spasms but could return to the lineup on Saturday.

Chacin saw his five-game winning streak come to an end on Monday after allowing five runs over six frames in an 11-3 loss to Cincinnati. The Venezuelan has gone 7-2 with a 1.86 ERA in 12 starts at home this season but owns a 4-6 record and 7.36 ERA in 11 outings on the road. Chacin is 10-8 with a 4.20 ERA in 23 career games (22 starts) against the Dodgers and has held Grandal to two hits in 14 at-bats.

Ryu extended his scoreless streak to 15 innings and struck out eight over seven frames in Sunday’s 8-0 victory over the New York Mets. The 30-year-old has gone 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in his last six starts since June 17, recording 38 strikeouts against nine walks. Ryu is 4-1 with a 2.19 ERA in six career starts against San Diego but struggled on July 7, 2016, when he allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Aug 12, 2017

The Los Angeles Angels are making a move up the American League wild-card standings and seek their fifth consecutive win when they visit the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. The Angels rallied from a four-run deficit on Friday en route to a 6-5 victory, their second straight over Seattle to open the four-game series.

Albert Pujols collected three hits, including a two-run single during a four-run seventh, to help Los Angeles climb within one-half game of Minnesota in the wild-card race. Tampa Bay and the Mariners are tied with the Angels, but Seattle missed an opportunity to remain in the lead as its bullpen imploded. Mariners slugger Nelson Cruz belted his eighth homer in 11 games and recorded two RBIs to raise his major league-leading total to 92. Angels superstar Mike Trout walked three times and scored twice but was hitless in two at-bats after registering multiple hits in eight of his previous 12 contests.

The 28-year-old has lost five of his last eight starts and alternated wins and losses over his last seven outings. JC Ramirez is 1-0 with a 5.00 ERA in six career relief appearances against Seattle, and the victory occurred prior to him being moved into the rotation this season.

Erasmo Ramirez has served up five homers over 8 1/3 innings in two starts since being re-acquired from Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old lost to Kansas City in his last outing, when he gave up five runs and eight hits - three homers - in five frames. Erasmo Ramirez went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts versus the Angels this season while with the Rays and is 4-2 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 career appearances (six starts).

NFL preseason betting: Best quarterbacks to back in August

Many NFL fans were wondering what the Philadelphia Eagles were doing in the offseason leading up to the 2016 campaign. They still had quarterback Sam Bradford but elected to sign career backup Chase Daniel to a three-year contract worth $21 million.

Daniel’s resume did not include much regular season experience. In fact, it would be fair to say Daniel was signed entirely based on the positive reviews from former coaches and, of course, his reps in the silly season – the NFL preseason.

When you’re backing up Drew Brees in New Orleans – a future Hall of Famer who’s missed two games in 10 years – you’re going to have to make the most of your game snaps in August.

Daniel owns a 93.9 career preseason QB rating with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. His teams are 16-9-1 against the spread and the over is 16-10 in preseason games Daniel’s played in.

The Saints reacquired Daniel this offseason and he’s listed as their No. 1 backup to Brees.

Knowing who else qualifies as a so-so starter but a sensational performer in the preseason can be valuable information for NFL bettors this August.

Here’s a quick look at three other backup QBs who shine brightest this time of year. One additional note here - quarterbacks who have been starters for the majority of their careers were dismissed from qualifying in our list. Starters only play significant time in Week 3 and even then coaches appear to be lightening the number of snaps their No. 1 guys get.

Colt McCoy

Current team: Washington Redskins

Preseason career stats: 92.8 QB rating, 68 percent completion percentage

The former Texas Longhorn and Heisman finalist has carved out a career for himself as a reliable backup and spot starter in the pros. McCoy is entering his fourth season in Washington and he’s well versed in head coach Jay Gruden’s offense. The Redskins are 7-3 ATS in preseason games McCoy has appeared in.

NFL teams are a collective 15-10 ATS and the over is 13-11-1 in preseason games McCoy has either started or played in.

McCoy is listed as Washington No. 2 quarterback meaning he should get significant playing time this week when the ‘Skins play the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday. Washington is a 1-point road underdog and the total is 37.5.

Luke McCown

Current team: Dallas Cowboys

Preseason career stats: 92.9 QB rating, 27 TD/7 INT*

The asterisk is to indicate McCown stats only go back as far as 2007. He put up some numbers in the preseason in 2005 and 2006 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but that was before NFL stat guys thought it was a good idea to record the game logs in August games. What a bunch of amateurs.

At any rate, McCown is the original gangsta when it comes to preseason excellence. He’s been compiling stats in pro exhibition contests since 2004 and his teams are 21-18-2 in games he’s made appearances in. The over is 24-17 in those 41 preseason games.

McCown was signed by the Cowboys at the end of July to either slot in as their QB3 or to compete for the No. 2 spot behind starter Dak Prescott.

McCown didn’t play for the ‘Boys in the Hall of Fame game but bettors should expect him to see some game action this week when Dallas visits Los Angeles to face the Rams on Saturday. Oddsmakers have the Cowboys as 2.5-point favorites with the total set at 37.5.

AJ McCarron

Current team: Cincinnati Bengals

Preseason career stats: 99.4 QB rating, 7.7 yards per attempt

McCarron, also known as Katherine Webb’s husband, is the new kid on the block with just two years of preseason action under his belt. He’s put up great numbers but the Bengals are 3-4 ATS and the over is 2-5 in McCarron’s seven preseason contests.

Cincinnati is a 2-point favorite Friday against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The total is set at 37.

Betting 101: Best ways to safely handicap the NFL preseason

So you want to bet NFL preseason football, do you?

Steering bettors away from the NFL’s unpredictable exhibition schedule is like trying to convince high school kids to wait until marriage, if you know what we mean. You aren’t going to convince them otherwise so you might as well preach about safe sex - or in this case safe betting habits.

We break down the best ways to handicap the NFL preseason slate and hope you don’t lose your shirt – and pants – by the time Week 1 rolls around:

Read everything

The great thing about the NFL preseason is that books and bettors are on the same level. Coaches don’t reveal their plans until usually the day before a game, and by that time odds have been up for a while. If you catch an online presser or read a quote from a coach spilling the beans on his starters’ playing time, you can quickly get down before the lines adjust.

Research is everything for preseason capping. Find out how many snaps the first teamers will get, what the focal point of the offseason is – offense or defense – and wager accordingly. Also, keep an eye on camp injuries or how veteran players are treating the tune-up games. Some star players go through the motions in August and ones limited by injuries won't risk going all out before the real games start.

A team that is trying to establish some momentum on the ground will likely run the ball a lot – therefore keeping the clock ticking and the final score Under the total. If a team is trying to fill roster spots in the secondary and is plugging in rookies and inexperienced player in its pass defense, than perhaps look at the other team to air it out and exploit those weaknesses.

QB depth

Much the way starting pitchers make up 90 percent of baseball handicapping, quarterbacks hold a similar value when betting on the preseason. It’s the most important position on the field and can single-handedly make or break your bets.

Finding a team with depth at quarterback is the key for success during the exhibition schedule. The No. 1 passer will likely only take a handful of snaps in the first two games of the preseason, turning the offense over to the backups.

Look for teams with an experienced backup under center. Many clubs have veterans and former starters on the roster, guys who won’t be freaked out by the NFL’s big stage like rookie QBs and wet-behind-the-ears free agents. These vets can keep the chains moving and often excel against an opponent’s second and third-tier defense.

New coaches and schemes

The preseason is summer school for many NFL teams transitioning their playbook, whether that be with a new head coach, coordinator or just an overall flip in the way they do things.

New head coaches aren’t necessarily a red flag. They can often feel a little pressured to win in the preseason in order to impress the front office and fan base, which can give some teams added betting value. New coordinators, on the other hand, are working in different plays and schemes, which usually come with a learning curve.

Read up on how teams are adjusting to new systems and offenses, especially if there is a dramatic shift in gears, like speeding up with no-huddle attacks or going from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4. When these teams take on established coaches, who have implemented their systems for a while, there can be value going against those new faces on the sideline.

Preseason lines

Come the regular season, the infamous 3-point spread is everywhere. And while a field-goal line is a key number in football betting, it loses some of its stature in the preseason.

Teams are more likely to go for a two-point conversion or try their luck on fourth-and-short in the preseason than play it safe. Not only do the games not matter, but a fourth down gamble or two-point attempt is an extra set for the offense as it works toward the regular season.

Depending on how those rolls of the dice play out, the final score can either be closer than three points or well over it. It’s rare to see a preseason spread of more than three points with most bouncing between 1-2.5 points.

Week to week

For those looking to bet the closest facsimile of Week 1 action during the preseason, you may want to pass on the first two weeks of exhibitions and save your marbles for Week 3. That’s when starting players tend to log the most time, working the majority of the first half and sometimes into the third quarter.

Week 1 and 2 often has first teams playing limited snaps – depending on the team’s situation – and Week 4 is pretty much a craps shoot. Coaches are making their final cuts, players are fighting to stay on the roster, and the coordinators are tightening the final nuts and bolts of their playbooks.

For those bettors who like a challenge, Week 4 of the preseason could be the trickiest week of the entire NFL schedule – preseason, regular season and playoffs – to wager on.

aturday’s NFL preseason Week 1 betting primer and odds:

The New York Jets' path to figuring out who their starting quarterback will be come Week 1 begins on Saturday with their preseason game against the Tennessee Titans.

Oakland Raiders at Arizona Cardinals (-3, 39.5)

Raiders

Head coach Jack Del Rio won’t say exactly how much time his starters will see but bettors can assume injured stars Amari Cooper and Khalid Mack both won’t play. Del Rio also hinted veteran running back Marshawn Lynch won’t see much – if any – action in the preseason.

Starting QB Derek Carr is coming off an excellent season totaling 28 TDs and almost 4000 passing yards. He’s also coming off a broken leg he suffered at the end of last year. Don’t expect much playing time for the established star player.

That means lots of Connor Cook and former Buffalo Bills first round pick EJ Manuel under center for the Raiders in their first preseason game.

Cardinals

Carson Palmer and the rest of the Arizona Cardinals first teamers will start and are expected to play about 15 snaps. Of note, Palmer threw just once in full practice this week according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. Head coach Bruce Arians wants his 37-year-old QB to be rested and ready for the start of the regular season.

Backup QB Drew Stanton is expected to play the second quarter while Blaine Gabbert, who was impressive for the Cards in the Hall of Fame Game, will take all the snaps in the second half.

Line moves

The spread and total are both holding steady. Worth noting the 39.5 Over/Under line is tied for the highest number set in the preseason this year.

Tennessee Titans at New York Jets (+3, 37)

Titans

Head coach Mike Mularkey hasn’t said exactly how much time his first teamers will get, but starting quarterback Marcus Mariota is expected to play the first series or two in this game. First round pick wideout Corey Davis will not play because of a sore hamstring.

Matt Cassel and Alex Tanney should split the reminder of the snaps under center after Mariota makes his exit. Cassel is the incumbent backup quarterback but reporters close to the team suggest Tanney has a shot at dethroning Cassel from the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

Jets

It’s a three-man race for the starting quarterback job according to head coach Todd Bowles. That means Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are auditioning through their performances in preseason for the starting job.

Expect McCown to start followed by Hackenberg and then Petty.

Line moves

The Jets opened as 2.5-point home dogs but have been bet up to +3. The total, meanwhile, moved down half a point from 37.5 to 37.

Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams (+3, 37.5)

Cowboys

There’s not much news out about how long the Cowboys starters will play on Saturday. Dallas beat writers are busy reporting on the effect of star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six-game suspension will have on the team moving forward.

None of the Cowboys’ starters played in the Hall of Fame Game a week ago, so we should be safe to speculate on the first stringers seeing at least a series on Saturday.

Rams

The Rams are in a similar position where there big team news is not what’s going on the field. Los Angeles traded cornerback E.J. Gaines to the Buffalo Bills for former fourth overall pick Sammy Watkins. Watkins won't suit up for this game obviously and neither will holdout defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Second year signal caller Jared Goff is expected to start while Sean Mannion and Dan Orlovsky will back him up. Talk about an underwhelming trio. Orlovsky was signed just before the Rams opened their training camp last month.

Line moves

The Cowboys opened as 2.5-point road favorites but have been bet up to -3. The total is set at 37.5
