[h=2]Argentina v Iran

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP[/h]
  • Venue: Estadio Mineirao, Belo Horizonte
  • Date: Saturday 21 June
  • Kick-off:17:00 BST

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Argentina are expected to revert to a 4-3-3 formation, with striker Gonzalo Higuain in line to be recalled to the starting line-up.
Fernando Gago is also likely to start, with Maxi Rodriguez and Hugo Campagnaro set to drop to the substitutes' bench.
Javier Mascherano will win his 100th cap, becoming the fourth Argentine to reach the landmark.
Iran could name the same team which drew with Nigeria, with Charlton's Reza Ghoochannejhad their lone striker.
[h=2]MATCH PREVIEW[/h]Argentina began the World Cup as second favourites and will clinch qualification for the last 16 with victory against Iran.
However, they struggled to break down Bosnia-Hercegovina in their opening game, and will once again face opponents prepared to sit deep and stifle them.

Alejandro Sabella's side were indebted to a brilliant solo goal from Lionel Messi against the Bosnians, ending his run of 623 minutes of World Cup football since last scoring.
Another piece of Messi magic could be needed to break down the well-drilled Iranians.
The defensive tactics employed by coach Carlos Queiroz helped Iran grind out a 0-0 draw with Nigeria, giving them their first clean sheet at a World Cup match.
That result means the Iranians cannot be eliminated even if they lose on Saturday. Regardless of the outcome in Belo Horizonte, a win in their final match, against Bosnia-Hercegovina, would give them a realistic chance of qualification.
While Queiroz is unlikely to deviate from his tactical plan, Argentina coach Alejandro Sabella admits his gamble to play 3-5-2 against the Bosnians backfired.
In the second half, Sabella reverted to the 4-3-3 system he used for the majority of qualifying matches, and they looked far more threatening.
It remains to be seen whether Sabella will be bold enough to play three strikers against elite opposition in Brazil.
But doing so against a defensive Iranian side should not pose too many risks - even if Saturday's game falls on the 16th anniversary of Iran's only previous World Cup win.
They famously beat the USA on 21 June 1998, but victory against two-time champions Argentina would surpass that and rank as one of the biggest shocks in World Cup history.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Head-to-head

  • The only previous meeting was a 1-1 draw in 1977. That match was held at the Bernabeu as part of a friendly tournament to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Real Madrid.
Argentina

  • Argentina have won won 10 of their last 13 World Cup group games (D2, L1), scoring 26 goals and conceding just five times. Their only defeat in that sequence was against England in 2002.
  • Lionel Messi has scored 21 goals in his last 21 appearances for Argentina.
  • They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last three World Cup matches, conceding six goals in total.
Iran

  • Saturday will be 16 years to the day since Iran earned their only World Cup victory by beating the USA 2-1 in Lyon. That is their only win in 10 matches at the tournament (D3, L6).
  • They recorded their first World Cup clean sheet against Nigeria.
  • Their only previous World Cup game against a South American side was a 4-1 defeat against Peru in 1978.
  • Five of the last nine goals Iran have conceded at World Cups have been headers.
  • The last two goals Iran have scored at World Cups have come from corners (both in 2006).

Nigeria v Bosnia-Hercegovina

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP
Venue: Arena Pantanal, Cuiaba Date: Saturday 21 June Kick-off: 23:00 BST

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Nigeria centre-back Godfrey Oboabona injured his ankle against Iran and is likely to be replaced by Joseph Yobo.
The Super Eagles lacked creativity in their first game so may recall Stoke forward Peter Odemwingie.
Bosnia-Hercegovina boss Safet Susic has hinted he will not revert to a 4-4-2 formation, meaning Vedad Ibisevic could again begin on the bench.
Susic hopes captain Emir Spahic will recover from a knee injury to play, while Sejad Salihovic is also doubtful.
[h=2]MATCH PREVIEW[/h]African sides have underperformed so far at this World Cup, and reigning continental champions Nigeria certainly disappointed in their opening game against Iran. A goalless draw extended their 16-year winless World Cup run to nine games, increasing the pressure on coach Stephen Keshi.
The starting line-up chosen by Keshi had an average age of just 23, with seven of their 10 outfield players born in the 1990s.

Nigeria were under-17 champions in 2007 and 2013, plus runners-up in 2009, and Keshi's controversial selection policy is geared towards translating that to success at the 2018 World Cup.
As well as answering Keshi's critics, victory on Saturday would provide a much needed boost to the country's spirits.
Earlier this week at least 21 people were killed by a bomb whilst watching a public broadcast of Brazil's game against Mexico in the northern Nigerian town of Damaturu.
The Super Eagles observed a minute's silence before training after learning of the attack. The terrorist threat posed by Islamist militants means outdoor screenings of World Cup games have been banned in some parts of Nigeria.
Bosnia-Hercegovina are the only World Cup debutants in Brazil, but their tournament will almost certainly be over if they lose - unless Iran shock Argentina in the day's first game.

That reality seems to weigh heavily on coach Safet Susic, who says his side cannot afford to be naive, stressing "a draw would leave us with a fair chance of progressing".
They are not words to fire the imagination of neutrals, but pragmatism that would have served England well.
The Bosnians are in a similar position to the Three Lions prior to their second match - because their opponents dropped points against the group outsiders, a draw would give them an excellent chance of progressing to the last 16.
Susic was uncharacteristically cagey against Argentina, sacrificing Stuttgart striker Vedad Ibisevic to field an extra midfielder.
Ibisevic netted eight times in qualifying and came off the bench to score against the Argentines, but may have to settle for another cameo role in Cuiaba, with Susic vowing not to throw caution to the wind.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Head-to-head

  • The sides have never previously met.
  • This will be the 800th match in the history of the World Cup.
Nigeria

  • Nigeria are winless in nine World Cup games (D3, L6) - the longest streak of any side involved at the 2014 tournament.
  • Their last World Cup victory was 1-0 against Bulgaria in the group stage of France '98.
  • The Super Eagles scored fewer goals (11) in qualifying than any side who made it to Brazil.
  • They have failed to score in three of their last five games.
Bosnia-Hercegovina

  • They could lose back-to-back competitive games for the first time since coach Safet Susic took charge.
  • The last time it happened was in 2009, when they lost three successive matches (the first against Spain, the subsequent two versus Portugal) in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup.
  • No player was involved in more goals than Edin Dzeko in European qualifying (10 goals, four assists).
  • Bosnia-Hercegovina attempted more shots (16. including blocked shots) and registered more on target (six) than Argentina in their opening game.

Germany v Ghana
[h=2]2014 FIFA WORLD CUP[/h]
  • Venue: Estadio Castelao, Fortaleza
  • Date: Saturday 21 June
  • Kick-off: 20:00 BST

[h=2]TEAM NEWS[/h]Germany defender Mats Hummels will be given every opportunity to prove his fitness after badly bruising his thigh against Portugal.
Regardless of whether Hummels is fit or not, captain Philipp Lahm will stay in his new defensive midfield role.
Ghana's Michael Essien has returned to full training after a toe injury.
Kevin-Prince Boateng could come into the starting line-up, meaning he will be on opposing sides to his half-brother, Jerome, of Germany.
[h=2]MATCH PREVIEW[/h]After a testing build-up to the World Cup that undermined their prospects of ending an 18-year wait for a major trophy, Germany gave the best possible riposte with a clinical thrashing of Portugal in the opening match of Group G. Why did anyone doubt them?
Thomas Muller made it seven World Cup goals in his last four games, Toni Kroos gave a playmaking masterclass that saw him nicknamed 'Garcon' (the waiter) by the Brazilian media for his ability to deliver passes to team-mates, right-back Philipp Lahm excelled in midfield, and the threat of Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo was completely neutralised.
Diego Maradona may have damned Muller with faint praise after the match - "He has no muscles, but he tore them apart" - but the Bayern Munich man gave the strongest example you could wish to see of how to play the 'false nine' role.
"He is a very unorthodox player and you can't really predict his lines of running, but he has one aim and that is 'how can I score a goal?'", said Germany head coach Joachim Low.
Thanks to Muller's hat-trick in the 4-0 thrashing of the Portuguese, victory for Germany in this match could all but secure their qualification for the last 16, given their goal difference.

Things don't look so rosy for the Ghanaians.Their defeat to the USA was followed by rumours of squad unrest, which have been denied.
One sub-plot to this match is provided by the Boateng half-brothers, Jerome of Germany and Kevin-Prince of Ghana, who will line-up on opposite sides for the second successive World Cup.
Never short of an opinion, Kevin-Prince claims Low's side lack leadership: "In really tight matches for Germany there was never anyone who stepped up to take charge. It's a fundamental truth.
"I see an outstanding team but whenever something is at stake they do not make the final step. They just lack this one guy."
There seemed to be leaders all over the pitch against Portugal. Tougher tests may yet prove Boateng's theory, but for now the German machine is up and running.
[h=2]MATCH FACTS[/h]Head-to-head

  • Germany have won their two previous games against Ghana: 6-1 in a friendly in April 1993 and 1-0 in the World Cup group stage at the last World Cup. Mesut Ozil scored the only goal in that match, with Thomas Muller providing the assist.
  • All seven of Germany's goals against Ghana have been scored after the 60th minute.
Germany

  • The only defeat Germany have suffered in six previous matches against African sides at a World Cup came against Algeria in 1982.
  • Germany have only lost one of their last 19 games in the group stage of the World Cup - a 1-0 defeat against Serbia in 2010.
  • Germany have opened their last seven World Cups with a victory. However, they have won their second World Cup group game on just one occasion since 1994 - against Poland in 2006.
  • Miroslav Klose currently has 14 World Cup goals - only Brazil's Ronaldo has more (15).
  • Thomas Muller has scored eight goals in seven World Cup games, including seven in his last four.
  • Per Mertesacker will become the 13th German to win 100 caps.
Ghana

  • Four of the last six World Cup goals Ghana have conceded have come from set-pieces, including the late winner for the USA in their opening group match.
  • Ghana had 21 shots on goal against the USA but only three were on target.
  • The Black Stars have won just four of their 11 World Cup matches.

KEY STAT: Iran have failed to score in three of their last five matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Lionel Messi came to life in the second half of Argentina's 2-1 victory over Bosnia and can play a key role in ensuring a comfortable victory over Iran. The 0-0 draw with Nigeria showcased Iran's defensive qualities but they may struggle to keep he score down against the best attack in the tournament.

RECOMMENDATION: Argentina 3-0

KEY STAT: Germany are unbeaten in their last 12 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Germany announced themselves to the tournament with a spectacular victory over Portugal and should soon be in command against Ghana, who seem to have regressed since South Africa 2010. The Africans were punished for defensive lapses against the USA and are likely to suffer a heavier defeat against a classy Germany side.

KEY STAT: Nigeria have not won any of their last five matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Bosnia had to defend for large parts of their 2-1 loss to Argentina but are likely to be much more positive against Nigeria and can be rewarded with maximum points. Nigeria looked a poor side in their 0-0 draw with Iran and may have wasted their best chance of posting a victory.

The Wild Applause Stakes
#5 SWEET ACCLAIM
#1 MY JOLIE
#3 WALK CLOSE
#6 HOLABIRD
Well folks ... few broodmares have had the influence of Glowing Tribute over the years. While her son, Kentucky Derby-Travers champ Sea Hero, gets most of the headlines, her legacy is also safe with her daughters. Wild Applause was among her best. The Rokeby product broke her maiden first out here at Belmont Park, where she would return to win the G3 Comely. She also claimed victory in the G2 Diana for MacK Miller. Here in the first running of this stakes race, #5 SWEET ACCLAIM, an Irish-bred entry, is the overall speed leader in this stakes field this afternoon racing at the mile distance on the turf, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of her four career starts to date, including a "POWER RUN WIN" to break her maiden in her "first asking." Jockey Javier Castellano and Trainer Chad Brown send her to the post ... they've hit the board with an impressive 68% of more than 200 entries saddled as a team to date, winning at an equally impressive, 31% clip. #1 MY JOLIE, a 12-1 BOMB, who also was bred in Ireland, drops in class (-8), and has also produced "POWER RUNS" in each of her four career starts to date, breaking her maiden in her respective, "first asking."

#4 HOME RUN KITTEN
#6 FOREVER JUANITO

#4 HOME RUN KITTEN is the overall speed leader in this stakes field this afternoon racing at the mile distance on the grass, and has hit the board in "POWER RUN FASHION" in each of his last three outings, including a "POWER RUN WIN" in his last start. His recent past performance sheets also show another "POWER RUN WIN" in his 5th race back. #6 FOREVER JUANITO takes a slight class drop (-1), and has hit the board in each of his last five "adventures," including a pair of "POWER RUN WINS" being embedded in this recent streak of racing consistency.

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $13000 Class Rating: 61

FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 6 CACTUS LADY 7/2

# 8 JU JU JUDY 12/1

# 1 MAJESTY GODDESS 5/1

CACTUS LADY looks to be a quite good contender. Garnered a very good Equibase Speed Figure last time out. Over time, this trainer has a very strong ROI at this distance/surface. With a reliable jock who has won at a quite good 26 percent rate over the last month. This has to be one of the top choices. JU JU JUDY - Has to be carefully examined based on the very good Equibase speed fig earned in the last race.

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES OR WHICH HAVE NOT WON TWO RACES IN 2014. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000.

RECOMMENDED CHOICES

The Walker Group Picks

# 1A ROLFS ROSSINI 9/5

# 3 CRESCENT CITY HERO 12/1

# 1 ARCTIC COMET 9/5

ROLFS ROSSINI supports the wager in here. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Rosier will almost certainly be able to get this gelding to break out quickly in here. Could beat this group given the 79 Equibase speed fig posted in his last outing. CRESCENT CITY HERO - With a strong 71 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's outing. Lately Foster has provided gamblers with a very good winning percentage with horses moving in dirt sprint races. ARCTIC COMET - Trainer has strong win rate (30 percent) at this distance and surface. Should best this group here, showing strong numbers of late.

#4 BELLA NICOLE (ML=15/1)
#5 ROCKSIE LUCIE (ML=3/1)
#2 SABRINA (ML=5/2)

BELLA NICOLE - In this race here, this race horse has garnered the highest speed rating at the distance, so I have to give her the edge. Panici and Wasiluk perform well when they join forces. It's hard to beat a +28 return on investment for a rider and handler. The July 13th affair at Colonial Downs was at a class level of (95). Dropping to a lower class rank considerably, so she should be in a good spot. Based on her last TrackMaster turf fig alone, I'm going to play this horse. Entered the Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs last time around the track and raced on the soft turf finishing ninth. Will do better in this field. This beautiful animal has a lot of class. A good sign in a race on the grass like we have today. ROCKSIE LUCIE - This horse should be rocking and rolling in the stretch. SABRINA - Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a nice effort in the last race within the last month. You have to like that most recent race rating, 66, which is the best most recent race rating of this field. This filly is number one in (EPS) earnings per start. Take a good look at this animal in the post parade. 59-64-66 are last 3 Equibase speed figures. Improving each time out is something she should do again in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DAYTONA BAY (ML=9/2), #7 SWEET MIRI (ML=5/1), #9 ZENSATIONAL WOMAN (ML=6/1),

DAYTONA BAY - You always think this horse has a shot to win, but she falters most every time. SWEET MIRI - Generally I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint contests in order to wager on her. The speed rating last out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's race. Mark this racer as a likely underlay. ZENSATIONAL WOMAN - Don't think that this filly has value at 6/1 this time out.

#6 MY NAME IS JAKE (ML=8/1)
#8 SHALER (ML=9/2)
#10 I'VE HAD MY SAY (ML=5/1)

MY NAME IS JAKE - You'll be generating profits right and left by turning your gambling cash onto this jock/trainer combination. Moves back to a distance at which he ran a speed rating good enough to make him a contender today. SHALER - Rivera is back for another race today after sitting atop this equine for the first time on May 28th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This first time turf runner is going to give these thoroughbreds a run for their money. He came in fourth in his try on a sluggish track on May 28th. Should like the turf. This horse has the class to win the race. A tactical ride by Rivera, and this one could bound home the winner. Ranked number 1 in earnings per start. Another sign that this equine has class. I'VE HAD MY SAY - I sense a speed duel developing here. If that happens, this colt will be in perfect stalking position to pick off the leaders.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MOUNTAIN STORM (ML=2/1), #2 LARRY AND ELAINE (ML=4/1),

MOUNTAIN STORM - This gelding is always around, but just doesn't finish first. Tough to bet on him on the win end. This mount's record tells you not to bet on him as the chalk. LARRY AND ELAINE - This animal just hasn't looked sharp recently. This gelding is always close, but just doesn't win. Hard to bet on him on the front end.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - SHALER - One can surmise, given he finished out of the top three at Mountaineer last out, that this equine did not like the off track. I expect improvement with better footing today.

DRF HARNESS

Race 10 - $20,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Best Bet (21 - 36 / $89.80): MEADOWBROOK SAMSON (3rd)

Spot Play: BIG BRAD (11th)

Race 1

In an inexperienced field of first time starters (1a) JACKSON'S IMAGE absolutely ran off in the qualifier on a sloppy track. The freshman pacer's mother was a brute on the track as a two-year-old. (1) ROCKIN' COUGAR actually ran a faster time and kicked a last quarter home a full second faster than the top choice; big chance. (1b) ROCK SONG pacer comes off two nice qualifiers himself.

Race 2

(5) COTTONLAND GEM should find this field a lot easier than last; threat. (1) WELL DUNE had too much work to do from a tough spot in his last race. The lightly raced 3-year-old gets the best post and will be much closer turning for home. (2) HOLY MCMOSES gelding has been facing tougher but rarely wins; use underneath.

Race 3

(3) MEADOWBROOK SAMSON gelding makes his third start back and should be used aggressively. (8) BLUE RIVER should offer a fair price and is one of the faster horses in the field. (6) SUMMER SHANDY four-year-old stallion is the sleeper in the race making his second lifetime start coming off an eye-catching victory.

Race 4

(4) ASHES N DUST ships in from out east and finds an ideal spot to do some damage at a price. (5) WESTERN DEAL is really starting to crank it up and gets sent out for a hot driver. (10) ELKHORN DAMIEN has won nine of thirteen on the year and just blitzed this same field, however the pacer could be stretched out early. The eleven-year-old could be vulnerable late; use caution.

Race 5

In a wide open and evenly matched field (8) JPS MINI ME will probably be the longest shot on the board and despite his bad looking lines does have the ability to pull off the upset with some racing luck. (6) JD'S ECHO will also offer a big price and is just rounding back into racing shape. (1) I'M REAL GOOD was beaten by a tough opponent last out at Maywood. Four-year-old pacer gets the best post and has been much better in a new barn.

Race 6

(3) OUR MISS LILY mare gets sent out for a low percentage pilot but has been sharp and finds a suspect field. (5) CRANBERRY MUFFLER is pacing some good miles but has yet to win at this level. The mare was the driver's choice and could use a fast pace to close into. (4) M A DUTY filly has a lot of ability and just needs to stay pacing for a chance.

Race 7

(4) STATE STREET LIZ mare has put in two big efforts after some lackluster performances; threat. (7) PARTY HANGOVER finds a much softer spot and has good closing ability. (6) WHISTLE PIG mare was a game winner last out against a better field but isn't the most consistent pacer.

Race 8

(1) TIME RUNNING OUT the only thing that can stop him from getting his picture taken is the driver not being aggressive. (8) TEA PARTY PATRIOT is really starting to blossom into a nice consistent horse. The 3-year-old gelding has a ton of closing ability. (5) SLEAZEBURGERNFRIES lightly raced colt has room to improve and always gives an honest effort.

Race 9

(4) DUNE IN RED was the driver's choice and should offer a nice price in an evenly matched race. (6) NO RESPECT looks on paper to be the class of the field and will probably try and cut the mile. (1) POCO GRANNY mare was at the mercy of a slow pace last out and should save some ground before shaking loose late.

Race 10

(3) FASHION DELIGHT went a tough trip being used hard to make the lead before tiring late. The pacer gets a good post leaving plenty of options. (2) MAJOR MONET just needs a driver change to be at his best. The well bred pacer has a ton of gate speed; fires early. (4) REAL OR MAGIC has been pacing some good miles but is probably best used underneath on your tickets.

Race 11

(10) BIG BRAD makes his third start back from a long layoff and has shown a wicked burst of speed. The pacer needs to find a way into the race but will have a say late if he's close enough. (3) BLOOMING GENIUS didn't miss by much to some really nice 3-year-old's last out. The pacer keeps getting better and should get a piece with a good effort. (4) EXTRAVAGANT ART hits the board a lot but doesn't like to pass late; use underneath.

Race 12

(8) LUCKY CRUSADER went a big effort last out from a very tough post. A similar effort puts his nose on the wire; threat. (6) LIFE IS GOOD TODAY pacer is sharp and has been going some big miles but rarely wins; command a price. (1) BIG DADDY WOO WOO has a ton of positives including second start back off a big first effort. The 8-year-old owns back class but will likely need to find room late.

Race 13

(9) HEATH was good last week showing some pace late. The pacer will offer a big price and could be sitting on an improved effort. (1) CASINO CAPTOR makes his second start for new connections and paced a good mile last out. (7) WASHINGTON HANOVER looked to be home free before being picked off late. The six-year-old has burned cash in his last two but will probably offer a better price; threat.

Race 4

(2) COUGAR HALL draws inside and made a miscue last start. He certainly has the speed, will offer a low price and won four back at this level. (1) TWIN B IMPRESSIVE gets the rail, drops in class and paced home in a sizzling :26 2/5 in his latest. (6) MAJOR HOTTIE gets much needed post relief and continues to show quick speed needed for this event. Race 7

(3) SOMETHINCREDIBLE draws inside, banked $200K last year as a freshman and comes out of the McIntosh barn. (2) REQUEST FOR PAROLE was the favourite last week and disappointed. She draws well once again, has the speed and comes out of the Johnson barn. (1) LIGHTS GO OUT gets the rail, has a good record this season and was a beaten favourite in her latest.

Race 8

(1) FIRST IMPRESSION closed like a freight train to win in his latest from an outside post and now has been blessed with the rail. (9) LENNON BLUE CHIP faces an easier bunch in here and was a game second in his latest. (5) SHADOW BARAN raced very well in his latest to finish second, draws well in here and is capable of the improve.

Race 9

(5) LUCAN HANOVER got away too far back last week and paced home in :25 3/5. He's the horse to beat in here against an easier field. (2) ELLIS PARK is the next logical option in line. He draws better this week and has been improving in each start for trainer Maxwell. (7) SING FOR ME GEORGE was timed in 1:49 3/5 in his latest. He comes out of the O'Sullivan barn and has been much better in his last three starts.

Race 10

Race 1 - $25,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool

Race 3 - $30,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

Race 7 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 57 - 183 / $353.40 BEST BETS: 8 - 14 / $31.40

Best Bet: COBALT MAN (2nd)

Spot Play: TARPON HANOVER (6th)

Race 1

(3) ROCKEYED OPTIMIST has raced very well in each of his starts this year and was simply too far back last time. (4) TWIN B TENACIOUS qualified back well enough after consecutive breaks. Three-year-old appears to have some ability. (2) SWEET BEACH got the job done last week but always seems to be looking for a horse to catch him.

Race 2

(4) COBALT MAN drops down in class and should take charge. (8) QUIK MAGIC was too far out of it last time; using. (7) SIR MELO’S Z TAM has hit the board in half of his 14 starts in 2014.

Race 3

(6) KEEP ON AMAZIN gets a huge driver change and also a better post to work with this week. (3) CHASIN RACIN hasn’t won in years and still looks like a contender. What does that tell you about the quality of this field? (2) YUMA HANOVER could be close to the lead.

Race 4

(1) SOMEWHERE IN L A is a 3-year-old of some quality facing much lesser older foes. This is a spot where he is supposed to awaken. (5) DAVID’S DREAM has been racing well but can’t get over the top. (3) A COOL CARD has ability but might need a start.

Race 5

(4) J CS JAKE was a bit sluggish for most of the mile but still blew by the field impressively in the stretch. There is some outside speed signed on to this $23K final and he should be in position to make another late surge. (1A) SINA has surprised me in each of the last two weeks. She looks like the more reliable half of a solid entry. (7) MCKENZIE’S STAR is more than fast enough to win and could provide decent value.

Race 6

(2) TARPON HANOVER had a slew of traffic trouble in last week’s Maturity versus much tougher competition. I’d expect him to be more forwardly placed this week. (7) URGENT ACTION missed a week of action but was razor sharp prior to that. (5) WAKE UP PETER is too complacent of a horse to feel confident about in a field with any talent.

Race 7

(8) TELL US MORE looked like the one to beat in this series from the word go and has swept through the preliminary legs easily enough. He is the clear and deserving chalk. (3) GRAB YOUR KEYS also won in both rounds of the series and should be a major player. (5) RELENTLESS DREAMER thrives when the pace is hot and that could certainly happen in this race. (1A) DUEL IN THE SUN has been racing very well and could easily step up on Saturday.

Race 8

(3) MOJARRA HANOVER could be the best value of the five or six logical contenders (all of which drew inside). She is clearly sharp and only needs a reasonable trip to be right there at the wire. (5) THE SUMMER WIND was used early and still hung on for the win last time. (2) KZ BEACH GIRL has picked up her game since this series began. (1) ODDS ON AVENTURE raced well last week for second.

Race 9

(6) CASINO KING faces an awful field and showed some signs of life last week; price play. (1) SENOR GRANDE closed well to be second most recently. (8) ITTAKESTWOBABY seems like he could be a player if the trip worked out.

Race 10

(8) BUCKEYE IN CHARGE finds a field without much early speed and might actually make the top this week. (4) UPFRONT COSMO draws better and hails from a barn that can get them live in good spots like this one. (2) MARINER SEELSTER should at least get a good check and will likely hit the board.

Race 11

(2) ALEX BULLVILLE drops back down to his optimum level. (3) HANG TEN ships into a good spot and should show early speed. (5) MARTINI HANOVER has raced well and steps up with a big mile at times.

Race 12

(6) DRAGON LORE gets written in under the earnings portion of the AE condition. He should take care of business. (2) DANCIN HILL was thought to have some ability but hasn’t shown it yet; dangerous. (1) LORD OF MISRULE exits Sire Stakes competition.

Race 13

(1) THE X HORSE draws better and looks like the only horse with any semblance of form. (9) JOLTS VIRTUE raced okay when dropped to this level last week. (5) EYES ONLY FOR YOU comes off a second-place finish.

DRF HARNESS

MEET STATS: 183 - 528 / $958.00 BEST BETS: 32 - 43 / $105.90

Best Bet: HESTON BLUE CHIP (6th)

Spot Play: GREAT VINTAGE (10th)

Race 1

(2) PAMS LEGACY steps up to face tougher for his new connections but he's been razor-sharp and is worth following. (8) REPORT FOR DUTY N was stung to the lead and gave way last week; being stuck outside again doesn't help but the veteran has to be included on exotic tickets. (5) COLONIAL ROAD could be a closing threat given a live trip.

Race 2

(1) SAMANDAR has done well here in the past and the Bruce Saunders-trained veteran lands in a seemingly perfect spot. (8) DIAMOND COWBOY returns at a reduced level and has the speed to overcome the outside post. (3) THE REAL ONE ships from Quebec to join the Lachance barn and he's had plenty of success with these types in the past.

Race 3

(5) TOBAGO CAYS has plenty of speed and an aggressive driver; veteran is worth a play. (2) RU READY TO ROCK drops a notch off a decent effort and he draws well again. (3) SHORTSTACKED toured the track last week from the eight hole; he's a proven threat when drawn inside.

Race 4

(4) BJ'S GUY drops, gets a better post and faces a field full of question marks; gets a weak vote. (1) TREND SPOTTER ships in with decent form, draws best and was Brennan's choice; gelding will attract attention at the windows. (3) NEPTUNE is a good money-earner who gets along well with Stalbaum.

Race 5

(4) RONNY BUGATTI did well to hold second once he was inhaled by Pancetta; four-year-old appears ready to score. (2) I LIKE DREAMIN bumped up to this level last week and rallied well for a share from the eight hole; threat from this inside spot. (5) AMERICAN RAGE makes his third start back from vacation and he could be tighter.

Race 6

(2) HESTON BLUE CHIP returns locally sporting solid current form, including a big effort to be second best to Sweet Lou two back. Despite being third choice on the morning line the Toscano trainee clearly looks like the one to beat in here. (8) P H SUPERCAM needs some help from this spot but the Levy winner isn't a complete toss here. (1) ROCK ON MOE has perfected the art of sucking along and hitting the ticket; include him from the rail spot.

Race 7

(1) PANONGAHELA proved a touch outclassed last week versus some tough ones. His prior two efforts were solid pocket-sitting scores. (2) SAFE HARBOR should be close throughout and that makes him a threat. (4) SIR ZIGGY'S Z TAM has been sharp for some time now.

Race 8

(1) DOCTOR BUTCH lands the rail again off an easy score; repeats. (4) CONNERY BLUE CHIP has been sharp for an extended period of time now and he should be landing a share with these. (2) CHINA GRILL faltered on the front end last week; prior efforts were solid.

Race 9

(2) EPSEN DE VIE is trip-dependant but from this spot the veteran can receive a favorable journey. (4) LIFE UP FRONT returns locally and has been rock-solid lately. (7) THIRTY TWO RED is reunited with Stratton and he could rally for a share at a big price.

Race 10

(4) GREAT VINTAGE never fired in his last two coming from off the pace. Tonight the classy Takter trainee should be gunning to the front. (1) MACHS BEACH BOY gets needed post relief and that makes him a serious player. (3) NOB HILL HIGH is clearly feeling good again.

Race 11

(6) TWILIGHT BONFIRE is a talented four-year-old who rallied well for a small share in stakes action over at The Meadowlands. When last seen here he was flying home for second in the 2013 Messenger. (2) GLASS PRINCE gets some post relief and should go well from this spot. (3) MALAK USWAAD N is still looking for that elusive maiden 2014 win but the talent is there.

Race 12

(6) E STREET PLAN never seriously threatened on the rim last week in his local debut. Maybe he can show some improvement tonight at a price. (2) ROLLWITHITHARRY finally lands back inside and he may be the one to beat. (1) MACHAL JACKSON was second best at this level last week and he draws best here.

Preview: Giants (43-30) at Diamondbacks (32-45)

Game: 2
Venue: Chase Field
Date: June 21, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants may be atop the NL West, but they're facing the potential of losing seven games in a row for the first time in nearly four years.

Perhaps Angel Pagan's expected return can provide a spark.

With their leadoff hitter possibly back in the lineup, the Giants look to begin capitalizing on a three-game set with the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

San Francisco (43-30) entered this series with Arizona (32-45), which had lost seven of nine, looking to reverse its sluggish streak. That didn't happen in the opener as the Giants lost for the ninth time in 10 tries with Friday's 4-1 defeat.

Now, they're on the brink of their worst losing streak since a seven-game slide June 26-July 2, 2010.

"It's been that way here through this tough streak," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We are missing the big hit, kind of keep the line moving."

Getting Pagan back could help.

Lower back pain has sidelined the center fielder for four straight games, and the Giants are 43-59 without him over the past two seasons.

"Life was tough without him last year," Bochy told the team's official website. "We're struggling a little bit right now, but that's going to happen."

Pagan is batting a team-high .307 and a whopping .361 with runners in scoring position. He's 4 for 10 with six RBIs in that scenario against the Diamondbacks this year, and the Giants came up empty on five chances Friday.

If Pagan is unable to play, either Gregor Blanco or Juan Perez will continue to replace him. They're a combined 5 for 24 (.208) over the past four games.

Ryan Vogelsong (4-3, 3.94 ERA) takes the mound, and he's 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA over his last four road starts with all of them ending in Giants wins.

The right-hander hasn't been that effective over his past two starts - both at home - allowing nine runs in 11 innings while losing his only decision.

Trying to get untracked in Arizona may not be ideal for Vogelsong, who is 0-2 with an 8.28 ERA in his last six starts against the Diamondbacks. He's been hammered for 10 runs in 9 1-3 innings while going 0-1 over his last two visits to Chase Field.

Aaron Hill is 9 for 19 (.474) with a double and a homer off him, and he ended an 0-for-12 slump with two hits and two RBIs on Friday.

Paul Goldschmidt has hit .387 in eight games versus the Giants this year with six doubles, two homers and seven RBIs. That includes going 9 for 20 at home after getting two hits Friday.

Brandon McCarthy (1-9, 5.18), however, is 0-5 with a 5.06 ERA over nine home starts. The venue hasn't mattered much lately, as the right-hander is 0-4 with a 5.66 ERA in his last eight overall outings.

McCarthy was victimized by a big inning Monday, giving up all three runs he allowed in the second inning before tossing five scoreless while not getting a decision in a 9-3 defeat to Milwaukee.

"Back in a good place. I started attacking more and trying to do everything I could to keep us in it and go as deep as I could," McCarthy said.

He's 1-0 with a 4.35 ERA in three career starts against the Giants, but he gave up five runs in 6 2-3 innings of a 9-8 home loss to them March 31.
