KEY STAT: There has not been more than a one-goal margin of victory in the last ten FA Cup finals

EXPERT VERDICT: Arsenal are red-hot favourites to retain the FA Cup, but the holders face a trickier test than the odds suggest when they take on Aston Villa at Wembley. The Gunners will be reasonably happy with their form in the second half of the season, although they remain capable of chucking in dodgy performances under pressure.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Both teams have scored in just three of Falkirk's last 12 matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Inverness finished their Scottish Premiership season with a 5-0 thumping at Celtic, but they should capture the Scottish Cup. Falkirk have not beaten any top-flight teams on their way to Hampden, have claimed just three victories against sides in the top half of the Championship and have taken just one point from their last four matches.

RECOMMENDATION: Inverness

KEY STAT: Wolfsburg have lost one of their last 12 domestic matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Progress to the German Cup final has been the only crumb of comfort for Borussia Dortmund and manager Jurgen Klopp, who will be desperate to go out on a high. However, the Black and Yellows are likely to come up short against underrated Wolfsburg, who finished 23 points above them in the Bundesliga.

KEY STAT: Paris St-Germain have won their last 11 domestic matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Second division Auxerre have played their best football in the French Cup but will struggle to trouble champions Paris St-Germain in the final. Auxerre defeated just one top-flight team (Guingamp) on their way to the final and finished mid-table in the second tier, 26 points behind champions Troyes.

RECOMMENDATION: PSG to win 3-0

KEY STAT: Athletic Bilbao have won just one of their last 24 matches against Barcelona

EXPERT VERDICT: Athletic Bilbao have had a strong finish to the season – putting together a seven-match unbeaten run – but are likely to be outclassed by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final. Barca have the treble in their sights and will take confidence from their 5-2 victory away to Athletic in early February.

RECOMMENDATION: Barcelona to win 2-0

KEY STAT: Motherwell are unbeaten in their last seven home matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Motherwell have given themselves a great chance of preserving their Premiership status with a 3-1 first leg win at Ibrox and they should be able to complete the job on their own patch. Their recent home record is good and the Gers have taken a full return from just three of their last nine matches.

UFC Fight Night 67

Event: UFC Fight Night 67
Date: Sat. May 30, 2015
TV/Time: (FS1, FS2, 8:00 p.m. ET)
Venue: Goiânia Arena
City: Goiânia, Brazil

Welterweight Bout: Carlos Condit (29-8-0) vs. Thiago Alves (21-9-0)
Odds: Condit -240, Alves +200

Carlos Condit attempts to end a recent rough stretch when he takes on Thiago Alves, winner of his last two bouts, at UFC Fight Night 67 in Brazil.

Condit has gone through stretches where nobody can beat him and has won five of his first six UFC matches. He lost the very first one by a split decision, but took off with five straight victories to follow, defeating his opponents by knockout three times during the period.

He’s fallen on hard times of late, though, and has lost three of his past four fights while being competitive in two of the defeats with them being named “Fight of the Night.” He also earned “Fight of the Night” honors when he knocked out Kampmann early in the fourth round in August of 2013. The “Natural Born Killer” has a ton of fighting background that has earned him respect in the octagon as he’s been both a professional boxer and kick boxer before; aiding him in getting 14 knockouts in his 29 career wins.

His opponent, Thiago “Pitbull” Alves, has not had quite as much experience in the multitude of rings available, but is a veteran of UFC and has been a member since 2005. He’s fought for the welterweight title belt once, losing to George St-Pierre by unanimous decision, and that started a rough stretch in which he lost three of his next five bouts.

He has gotten some mojo back recently, though, with a win in each of his last two fights as the first earned “Fight of the Night” honors and the second earned him “Performance of the Night” recognition after knocking out Jordan Mein with a body kick in the second round. Overall, “Pitbull” has earned his wins by knockout 12 times and has just two submissions to his name with the other seven being a decision. This fight will be a fun one as the Swiss army knife style fighting of Condit will take on the expert Brazilian jiu-jitsu of Alves.

Condit has been a part plenty of exciting fights as he has the ability to both attack and defend his opponent in multiple ways. He lands a solid 3.19 significant strikes per minute at 40% accuracy and dominated Kampmann in his most recent victory, out-striking him 100-35 with two submission attempts.

Although, in his other three most recent bouts, he has landed a mere 91 strikes compared to the 115 by his opponent and has been thrown around like a ragdoll with 22 takedowns against him. That is an area that he has always had issues with as his takedown defense is a meager 39% while he has a mediocre 50% takedown success rate with 0.54 takedowns per 15 minutes in the octagon.

He takes on 2.23 significant strikes per minute while deflecting 58% of these attempts and has also done well with 1.4 submissions per 15 minutes. He will need to get back to those submission attempts as he has just three in his last two fights and did not have one in the previous three prior to that. Condit is certainly a veteran of many fighting styles, but he’ll need to find what will be most effective for him in this bout and attack with it.

Alves is a little more aggressive than his opponent in this one, landing 3.58 significant strikes per minute at a 41% accuracy. He does do better defending against his oppositions advances, though, deflecting 64% of the attempts as his fights tend to be at a quicker pace with 2.94 significant strikes landing per minute against him.

There have been plenty of times in his career where he was actually on the losing end until he was able to get in that powerful strike and earn a knockout. He has rarely gone to the submission in the past, attempting a mere 0.4 per 15 minutes of fighting, but performed a nice rear naked chokehold against Papy Abedi which finished off the match at UFC 138 and proved he is more than a one trick pony.

He also has just two takedowns over the past four matches, both coming against Martin Kampmann as he’s has preferred to stay upright recently. If he can get back to the mat for this one he may have a better chance with Condit’s poor defense against the move.

With Champions League and Premier League titles still seemingly way beyond the team, Arsenal is again relying on an FA Cup triumph to salvage some silverware from its season.

For the second straight year, Arsenal heads into the final of the world's oldest club competition as the big favorite against a team that has ended the season fighting against relegation from the Premier League.

In 2014, it was Hull. On Saturday, Aston Villa will provide the opposition at Wembley Stadium - and the pressure on Arsenal will be nowhere near as intense as 12 months ago.

On that occasion, Arsenal was looking to end a nine-year trophy drought, and the burden appeared to suffocate the team as it went 2-0 down after eight minutes. Arsenal recovered to take the game to extra time and Aaron Ramsey's 109th-minute goal clinched the trophy.

It should be a more serene Arsenal that arrives at England's national stadium this time round.

''Maybe last year, the expectation level was more demanding - the demand was absolute,'' Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said. ''But we have our own demands inside the group here and we have high expectation for our game on Saturday.''

Wenger has some history to make, too.

An Arsenal win would give Wenger a sixth FA Cup winner's medal, a feat no manager has achieved since the Second World War. George Ramsay is the only previous manager to have won the FA Cup six times, and the last of his victories came in 1920.

Arsenal is seeking back-to-back FA Cup titles for the third time in 23 years, and to win the revered trophy for the fifth time in 14 years.

Villa will be no pushover, though. The team might have finished the Premier League on Sunday just one place above the relegation zone but Tim Sherwood has revitalized Villa since taking over as manager in February, when it was in the bottom three and on a 10-match winless run.

Under Sherwood, Villa has a new-found zip in midfield and powerful striker Christian Benteke is back to his menacing best. Villa was a worthy winner against Liverpool at Wembley in the semifinals and seemed to relish the big occasion.

Here are some other things to know about Saturday's game:

BENTEKE THE BULLY

On paper, Arsenal is stronger in all departments - except, maybe, when it comes to comparing the teams' lone striker.

While Olivier Giroud faded in the last two months of the season and is without a goal for Arsenal in eight games, Benteke was one of the Premier League's best players since March and scored 12 goals in 12 games.

''Christian is a real handful for anyone,'' Villa midfielder Ashley Westwood said of the Belgium international. ''He's back to his best now, bullying defenders. They won't want to play against him - I'm sure they'll be having sleepless nights about him.''

Benteke has benefited from the more direct style of play under Sherwood, with teammates looking to find the striker early and using his strength in the air.

WALCOTT DILEMMA

Wenger is likely to stick with Giroud as his targetman, although there is an alternative for the Frenchman.

In a rare start up front, Theo Walcott scored a first-half hat trick in Arsenal's 4-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the league season Sunday, putting forward his case for inclusion at Wembley.

The England international is starting to regain his form after almost a year out with a knee injury.

''I've been patient and when I've been given the opportunity, I've tried to take it,'' Walcott said. ''Today it's gone for me. I'm sure the manager's got an absolute headache to pick his best team.''

Danny Welbeck, another possible striker option for Arsenal, was ruled out of the game because of a knee injury.

NO MOMENTUM

Villa has lost momentum in the final weeks of the season, perhaps because players had one eye on the FA Cup final once safety was virtually assured after beating West Ham on May 9. Villa lost its last two games of the campaign, one of which was a 6-1 defeat to Southampton.

But Sherwood is confident he'll get the best out of his players.

''There is no point shackling our players and taking it on the chin until we get knocked out,'' Sherwood said. ''I don't think our fans want to go there and watch that. Let's go toe to toe and see what happens.''

FA CUP RECORD

Arsenal has won the FA Cup 11 times, tied for the most with Manchester United.

Villa has won it seven times, but not since 1957.

NHL Preview: Blackhawks (48-28) at Ducks (51-24)

Date: May 30, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ryan Getzlaf and Jonathan Toews agree that the pain of a Game 7 defeat in the Stanley Cup playoffs doesn't really go away.

Instead, good players use that failure to get better while they wait for another chance to take hockey's ultimate test.

One year after the Anaheim Ducks and the Chicago Blackhawks both exited the playoffs with a loss in a seventh game, they're facing off in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals on Saturday night at Honda Center.

After two weeks of brilliant, bruising hockey, Toews and Getzlaf don't plan to say much in the dressing rooms before the Blackhawks and Ducks meet for the conference title and a spot in the Stanley Cup Final.

Both captains believe their clubs need no extra motivation to conclude this remarkable series with a big finish.

'We've been through the experiences now,' Getzlaf said Friday after a spirited Ducks practice. 'We have to use them the way we need to. That's the biggest thing. I've always believed that you learn a lot from losing.'

Both teams have lost three times apiece in these conference finals, alternating victories in a tense, well-played series. The Ducks have just one regulation loss in the entire postseason, but it was in Game 6, a 5-2 defeat that might have turned the series' momentum in the Blackhawks' favor heading back to Orange County.

'You try to will your way to the win,' Toews said. 'And given that passion we have in our team, we're feeling pretty good about our chances.'

Both teams' recent history contains motivation and warnings when they face off to conclude a series already featuring six overtime periods and four one-goal games.

The Ducks' last two postseasons ended with a Game 7 loss at home, and they blew a 3-2 series lead both times. Anaheim is a three-time Pacific Division champion and one of the NHL's top teams ever since coach Bruce Boudreau took over in late 2011, but hasn't broken through into trophy territory.

'It's happened too often the last couple years,' Ducks forward Corey Perry said. 'But you win (Saturday) night, and people start talking about something different. We're not focused on the past. We're focused on (Saturday) night, starting something different. It's one game to go play for the Stanley Cup. It doesn't get any more exciting than that.'

The Ducks also point out that those losing teams didn't have center Ryan Kesler, whose defensive tenacity and leadership have bolstered Anaheim in tough games all season long. Kesler is expected to shadow Toews for the seventh straight game.

'I don't think it's about X's and O's anymore,' Kesler said. 'I think it's about who wants it more and who is ready to out-compete the guy across from him. Whoever that is, is going to win the game.'

Despite their two Stanley Cup titles in the previous five seasons, the Blackhawks can't exactly stand on a stellar Game 7 record, either. The current Chicago core has lost in two of its three trips to a Game 7, beating only Detroit in a second-round series in 2013 - the Blackhawks' only Game 7 victory since 1995.

And Chicago's experience in last season's conference finals still stings. The Hawks lost Game 7 at home to the Los Angeles Kings on Alec Martinez's overtime deflection goal - a reminder of the dumb luck that conspires with years of preparation and hard work to decide these teams' fates.

'We're pretty far past that now,' Chicago goalie Corey Crawford said, before quickly adding: 'We have it in the back of our mind a little bit. It was tough for us to take.'

If the Blackhawks win the series, it will be a remarkable testament to their stars - because coach Joel Quenneville is betting everything on them. Chicago has played the conference finals with basically four defensemen, and its two best offensive players are ganging up again.

Quenneville has put Toews and Patrick Kane on a line together with increasing frequency in the last two games. He did it again during Chicago's practice Friday, suggesting the superstars will team up in Game 7.

Chicago also has survived against the deep Ducks while Duncan Keith, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Brent Seabrook and Johnny Oduya play almost every minute on the blue line. Kimmo Timonen, David Rundblad and Kyle Cumiskey have been given barely more than 10 minutes per game.

Keith has logged a jaw-dropping 202 minutes and 57 seconds in a series that might stand as one of the decorated defenseman's greatest achievements, but he won't remember it fondly unless the Blackhawks get one more series in June.

'I think some of that feeling, even though it was a year ago, you can still remember,' Keith said. 'We don't want to have that feeling come this way. We want to make sure we do our best to try to get through this time.'

Ducks-Blackhawks go for fourth straight Over
Stephen Campbell

The NHL Western Conference Finals has been a boon for bettors banking on high totals, but it will officially come to an end on Saturday in Game 7 with either the Chicago Blackhawks or the Anaheim Ducks earning the right to represent the West in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Over has cashed in three straight games in the series, going 3-1-2 Over/Under in total.

Oddsmakers have tabbed the matchup with a 5 goal total.

MLB roundup: Cards win as Lackey masters Dodgers

ST. LOUIS -- John Lackey tossed seven scoreless innings and fanned nine as St. Louis beat Los Angeles 3-0 shutout at sold-out Busch Stadium.
Throwing 66 of his 96 pitches for strikes, Lackey gave up only five hits and one walk.
Suffering their fourth straight road shutout, the Dodgers appeared to get more frustrated with the strike zone of plate umpire Mike Winters as the night progressed.
It boiled over in the seventh. Manager Don Mattingly was booted after Andre Ethier took a third strike and A.J. Ellis was kicked out.

Rangers 7, Red Sox 4
ARLINGTON, Texas Josh Hamilton, the former American League MVP who helped the Texas Rangers make back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011, but left after the 2012 season for a richer contract with the Los Angeles Angels, hit two home runs to pace Texas over Boston.
His line-drive shot in the fourth off knuckleball-throwing Red Sox starter Steven Wright, was almost an identical rocket to the one he put in the seats in his first at-bat.
Yovani Gallardo pitched six strong innings to earn the win, holding the Red Sox to four hits while walking three and striking out five. Gallardo surrendered three or fewer runs for the ninth time in his last 10 starts.

Reds 5, Nationals 2
CINCINNATI -- Todd Frazier belted his 15th homer, Joey Votto also homered, and rookie Anthony DeSclafani pitched six solid innings lifting Cincinnati past Washington.
Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg left the game in the second inning with an undisclosed injury and was replaced by Taylor Jordan, who allowed three runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
There was no immediate word on Strasburgs condition. Earlier Friday the Nationals learned that left-fielder Jayson Werth will be out indefinitely with a fractured wrist.

Marlins, 4, Mets 3
NEW YORK -- Justin Bour hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Dan Haren threw seven solid innings as Miami beat New York.
The Marlins snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 3-8 since general manager Dan Jennings took over as manager. The Mets had their three-game winning streak ended.
The Marlins bunched their rallies against Matt Harvey and Carlos Torres, who combined to allow just seven runners. But six reached base against Harvey in the fourth and fifth, when Miami scored its lone runs.

Rockies 4, Phillies 1
PHILADELPHIA -- Chad Bettis combined with John Axford on a two-hitter as Colorado beat Philadelphia.
The 26-year-old Bettis, making just his fourth start since his recall from the minors on May 14, had a perfect game through six innings and a no-hitter through 7 1/3. Cody Asche broke it up by grounding a single to left field.
Bettis was bidding for just the second no-hitter in Rockies history. Ubaldo Jimenez remains the only Colorado pitcher with a no-no, beating Atlanta 4-0 on April 17, 2010.

Royals 8, Cubs 4
CHICAGO -- Lorenzo Cain went 3-for-4, including an eighth-inning RBI double for the go-ahead run, and Kansas City snapped a four-game losing streak.
Cain's double against Pedro Strop scored Mike Moustakas for a 5-4 lead. Kansas City added two more runs in a three-run eighth and a run in the ninth.
The Royals, making their first visit to Wrigley Field since 2001, used three solo home runs to help build an early lead before the Cubs replied with their own long-ball attack to forge a 4-4 tie.

Orioles 2, Rays 1
BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Baltimore over Tampa Bay.
The Rays have lost six straight games and continued to struggle on offense, as they have most of the season, but nearly put together a winning rally in the ninth against Darren O'Day.
Tampa Bay loaded the bases with no outs before O'Day rebounded to strike out two and get Jake Elmore to ground into an inning-ending force play.

Blue Jays 6, Twins 4
MINNEAPOLIS -- Chris Colabello's two-run homer with no outs in the top of the ninth inning broke a tie and Toronto posted the win over Minnesota.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Minnesota, which entered the day tied atop the American League Central standings.
Colabello's homer came on a first-pitch fastball from Twins closer Glen Perkins, who walked Russell Martin. For Colabello, who was waived by the Twins last winter before being claimed by Toronto, the home run was his fourth of the year.

Diamondbacks 7, Brewers 5
MILWAUKEE -- Nick Ahmed's eighth-inning home run snapped a tie game and gave Arizona the win over Milwaukee.
Ahmed's homer, off Jonathan Broxton was his third of the season and one of four hit Friday by the Diamondbacks, who came into the game with at least one homer in each of their last six games.
Brad Ziegler gave up a run but recorded his third save of the season.

White Sox 6, Astros 3 (11 innings)
HOUSTON -- Geovany Soto cranked a two-run, tie-breaking double to right field in the top of the 11th inning as Chicago claimed the opener of its three-game series with Houston at Minute Maid Park.
Soto, who entered in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement behind the plate, drove home Carlos Sanchez and Adam Eaton with his extra-base hit off Astros left-hander Tony Sipp.
Four White Sox relievers combined to work five scoreless innings, with left-hander Dan Jennings (1-1) earning the win and right-hander David Robertson notching his 10th save. Houston, conversely, needed seven relievers after starter Lance McCullers departed in the fifth inning.

Mariners 2, Indians 1
SEATTLE -- Seattle rookie Taijuan Walker baffled Cleveland while leading the Mariners to a win.
Walker (2-5) pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and he got all the offense he needed on Seth Smith's two-run homer in the sixth. Walker matched a career high with eight strikeouts, without walking a single batter, while his eight innings equaled the longest outing of his 21 career starts.
Closer Fernando Rodney came on in the ninth and retired the first two batters before a walk and an RBI triple from pinch hitter Ryan Raburn made things interesting. After a mound visit from manager Lloyd McClendon, Rodney got Michael Brantley to pop out to earn his 14th save of the season.

Athletics 6, Yankees 2
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Right-hander Sonny Gray threw eight strong innings, Brett Lawrie hit a two-run homer and Oakland defeated New York at the O.co Coliseum, winning back-to-back home games for the first time this season.
The A's have won 16 of their past 21 games against the Yankees overall and 11 of their past 12 meetings in Oakland.
Gray (6-2), who owns the American League's lowest ERA at 1.82, allowed two runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked two.

Angels 2, Tigers 0
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Hector Santiago allowed just three singles over 7 1/3 scoreless innings, leading Los Angeles to a shutout win over Detroit at Angel Stadium.
Santiago did need some help from his bullpen, and got it. Huston Street entered the game in the eighth inning with two outs and the bases loaded, but struck out Yoenis Cespedes to end the inning Street then pitched a scoreless ninth to finish it off for his 15th save.
It marked the seventh time in 10 starts this season that Santiago yielded one earned run or less, but the first time he pitched into the eighth inning.

Giants 4, Braves 2
SAN FRANCISCO -- Veteran Tim Hudson beat Atlanta for the first time in his career, outdueling young right-hander Mike Foltynewicz in San Francisco's victory.
Buster Posey drove in three runs with a home run and a double, providing all the offense Hudson and two relievers would need to pitch the Giants into first place in the National League West with a sixth consecutive home win.
Hudson, a nine-year employee of the Braves from 2005-2013, allowed one run on five hits in seven innings in his second-ever start against Atlanta. The 39-year-old has now beaten 29 of the 30 major league teams -- all but the club that initially drafted him in 1997, the Oakland Athletics.

Padres 6, Pirates 2
SAN DIEGO -- Derek Norris, who struck out in his first four at-bats, hit a two-out, walk-off grand slam to give San Diego a win over Pittsburgh at Petco Park -- ending the Pirates' seven-game winning streak.
It was the Padres' first walk-off win of the season.
Jedd Gyorko drew a walk from Pirates right-handed reliever Rob Scahill to open the ninth. Abraham Almonte bunted to Scahill, who fielded the ball but threw wild to first, allowing Gyorko to reach third and Almonte second with no one out. Scahill walked Cory Spangenberg to load the bases with none out.
But the Pirates, deploying a six-man infield, got two straight forceouts at home before Norris hit his fourth homer of the season to left-center off Scahill

It's time NHL bettors started taking the Anaheim Ducks seriously

The sharpest puck bettors can tell you what the rest of the hockey world took some time warming up to these playoffs: the Anaheim Ducks are the real deal.

It wasn’t until the Ducks took a 2-1 lead over the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals that Anaheim finally moved into the favorite spot to win the Stanley Cup, where they sit at +160 (bet365) to win it all.

If we’d been paying attention, the signs have been there this postseason that this team was a lot better than we’d been giving them credit for. The Ducks are by far the most profitable team for bettors these playoffs of the four teams still alive.

If you’d been betting with a $100 unit every game this postseason - which means risking $100 in an underdog situation or risking enough to win $100 in a favorite situation - the Ducks would’ve won you $802 heading into Game 4 against Chicago. Chicago is a somewhat distant second at $582 and the East is way behind with the Lightning returning $256 and the Rangers having a profit of $142.

Despite this, the Ducks opened as the same hefty +130 underdogs for Game 4 as they opened for Game 3 in Chicago. Anaheim has lost only two games these playoffs and yet the club has been an underdog four times and has been favored at -140 or less six times.

That’s incredible value for a team that leads the playoffs in goals per game (3.58), goals against per game (1.92), best power play of any team remaining by a mile (27.8 percent) and best penalty kill (86.4 percent).

The Ducks face the Blackhawks Saturday night and will return to Anaheim with home ice advantage in the series no matter what happens in Game 4.

The not-so-friendly Sunshine State?

The Tampa Bay Lightning have taken some fire this postseason for taking unusual measures to ensure they have home ice advantage.

The team has a home ice policy that doesn’t allow fans to don visiting team garb in certain sections of Amelie Arena (about seven percent of it) and they restrict online ticket sales to residents of Florida, which they monitor via credit card addresses.

Cry penalty if you must, but there could be something to it. The Lightning had the fewest losses in regulation of any team in the NHL in the regular season and they are 5-3 at home these playoffs with the most recent home victory giving them a 2-1 edge in the Eastern finals.

Teams are also 46-29 (65.3 percent) at home these playoffs so any edge you can get might be worth something.

A turn in trends

Before the conference finals series began, the Rangers were a pretty solid under bet in recent postseasons and the Blackhawks were a pretty decent over bet. You might want to consider going the other way now.

The over in Rangers games is 13-22-9 over the last five postseasons but the last two games have seen 19 goals combined. The over is 5-1 in the six meetings between the Bolts and Rangers this year so it might be time to rethink the trend.

The Blackhawks, meanwhile, saw an over trend of 17-6-2 over the last two postseasons after Round 1 of this year. Since then, the over is 3-2-2 and 0-1-2 in their series with the Ducks. The over/under is also 0-4-2 in Blackhawks-Ducks meetings this year.

MLB ballparks changing their stripes when it comes to betting park factor

In April of 2004, the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres waved goodbye to their respective outdated ballpark relics known as Veterans Stadium and Qualcomm Stadium and stepped forward into the modern era with the debut of fan-friendly attractions Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia) and Petco Park (San Diego).

But while the locales shared the similarities of serving as National League venues opening within a week of one another, the next decade would see each stadium travel a drastically different path.

Citizens Bank Park quickly established its place among the top hitter-friendly venues in all of Major League Baseball, as CBP ranked in the Top 5 in home runs per game four times during the stadium’s first five years of existence.

Conversely, Petco Park finished 29th or worse in home runs hit four times during that same time span. While hitters were living the dream in Philadelphia, they were experiencing recurring nightmares 3,000 miles away in Southern California.

However, fast-forward to 2015 and it’s a different story entirely. While the Phillies and their opponents are still mashing at a steady rate, San Diego has undergone a transformation that bettors should be closely monitoring.

Citizens Bank Park ranked sixth in home runs per game last season (1.214) and through the first two months of this year, ranks seventh (1.286). But it’s in San Diego where a unique transition has occurred that has the Padres and their opponents morphing from an average 0.808 home runs per game in 2014 (24th) to 1.056 per game this season (14th).

The reasons for the sudden SoCal power surge can be traced to a combination of both human and environmental factors. For starters, the heavy marine layer responsible for keeping balls in play this time of year has been absent in downtown San Diego due to warmer temperatures.

That hasn’t been the case in San Francisco, where a combination of wind and the aforementioned marine layer contributed to an average of just 0.488 home runs hit per game at AT&T Park this year, which currently ranks dead last in baseball.

In addition, the Padres moved the left field fence in three feet while simultaneously lowering it from eight feet to seven feet. And let’s also not forget the fact that Padres general manager A.J. Preller went on a spending spree this offseason that saw the franchise acquire Justin Upton and Wil Myers - among others - the former of which currently ranks fourth in the bigs with 12 dingers.

The result of this myriad of changes has seen Petco Park, a stadium where Overs went a bankroll-busting 30-47-4 last season, produce an Over/Under record of 13-10 through the first 23 home games of the 2015 campaign.

Granted, that’s not the type of blind-betting record that will buy you a house in Bora Bora come October, but it’s certainly enough to warrant a study into the other MLB ballparks to determine if there are any other drastic changes that have taken place so far this spring.

SURGING

Progressive Field (Cleveland): An anomaly based on the fact that Progressive Field saw an average of 1.083 home runs per game last season (11th in MLB) compared with just 0.786 in 2015 (24th), yet, the Indians were 39-42 to the Under during home games a year ago versus 14-7 to the Over through two months this season. Credit the starting pitching (4.10 ERA, 21st) and horrific defense (30 errors, 23rd) for the surge in scoring.

Turner Field (Atlanta): Similar to the oddity taking place in Cleveland, Turner Field has watched its home run rate drop from 1.122 per game in 2014 (10th) to 0.927 this season (18th) despite going 34-40-7 Over/Under last year compared with a 14-6-2 O/U mark this year. The profitable Over run can largely be attributed to Bookmakers sending out lower totals to open the season under the impression that this team would be one of the worst clubs in baseball in 2015. At 22-21 entering Memorial Day, the Braves have done their best to prove a lot of people wrong.

Miller Park (Milwaukee): One of the worst teams in baseball at 16-29 while boasting a run differential of minus-51, the Brewers’ pitching staff has been serving up meatball after meatball that has seen the home run rate at Miller Park jump from 1.142 in 2014 (9th) to a league-leading 1.801 this season. Should that number hold through until the end of the season, it would serve as the highest home run rate since Progressive Field in Cleveland posted an astounding 2.031 jacks per game back in 2001. Miller Park played to a 36-43-2 O/U record last season, but currently boasts a 13-9-1 O/U count in 2015.

SLIDING

AT&T Park (San Francisco): One of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball, the defending champs are an extremely profitable 16-7 to the Under in 2015 when playing by the Bay, as opposed to the 38-39-4 O/U mark this stadium produced last season. The low-scoring totals can be attributed to a revamped lineup that lost big-time hitters Pablo Sandoval and Michael Morse during free agency and spent the first six weeks of the year without right fielder Hunter Pence (broken forearm). Additionally, no club in baseball has gotten better starting pitching when playing at home than the Giants (2.73 ERA, first).

Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia): It’s still a hitter-friendly venue that ranks seventh in home runs per game (1.286), but the Phillies lack any semblance of firepower necessary for keeping up their end of the bargain. A 40-35-6 O/U record last season has plummeted to 8-12-2 O/U to kick off the 2015 campaign due in large part to an offense that ranks dead last in runs per outing (3.17).

Comerica Park (Detroit): Miguel Cabrera (11) and J.D. Martinez (9) are doing their part. But, as for the rest of the Tigers, well, this club currently ranks just 20th in the majors in home runs this season (0.84), which has helped drop last year’s 44-33-4 Over/Under record to 11-14-1 O/U this season. In addition, Comerica Park in general has been a bit stingier in 2015 by permitting just 0.856 home runs per game (20th) as opposed to the 1.014 rate it allowed in 2014 (15th).
