Saturday Bonus Play on the O's over the Yanks.

The Yankees won another game yesterday behind the strong outing from lefty CC Sabathia. He's owned the Birds in the past so it was no surprise he got the job done agains last night.

Today, however, is a different story.

While the Yankees are playing good baseball, they are getting ready to get shelled on the defensive side because Phil Hughes toes the slab in hopes of turning around the fortunes of his first start.

Hughes was tagged for four runs (three earned) on eight hits over just four innings of work in a blowout loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Hughes is perennially a slow starter, and his career ERA for the month of April is higher than any other month of the year. October is his second-worst. So what that tells us is Hughes is a slow starter and a weak finisher, but in the middle he does a pretty good job.

Unfortunately for Yankees fans, it's still April and his first start was pretty bad.

I'm not saying this pick is solely based on past performances, but it's hard to argue with how Hughes looked last April and how he looked in his first start of the 2013 campaign.

I'm taking the Orioles to win the game outright as your Bonus Play of the day.

SCOTT DELANEY

My free winner for tonight is going to be on the Seattle Mariners, catching money at home, as the Texas Rangers aren't impressing me enough to think they can come in and dominate this team.

Sure, they won the series opener over Felix Hernandez, but that doesn't mean a thing to me.

What does mean something is how the M's responded - with a win last night.

And my main thought process is the Mariners will be out for revenge for a second-straight night on general principle, and the Rangers will have their guards down once again.

I'm pretty sure the M's thought they'd have a win in the bank in the series opener, with Hernandez on the hill. But it wasn't to be.

The scrappy Mariners got it done last night and I like them to do so once again.

(5) NEW YORK RANGERS VS (6) NEW YORK ISLANDERS

Take: over the total.

The Islanders have upgraded the offense this season, 5th in the NHL in scoring, but the defense is still soft, 22nd in goals allowed. The Over is 52-25-4 in the Islanders last 81 games following a win and 5-2-1 over the total in their last 8 home games. Into town come the Rangers, and when these city rivals meet the over is 12-4 in the last 16 meetings, including 8-1 over the total in the last 9 meetings in this arena. Play the Rangers/Islanders over the total.

Free Pick on Atlanta Braves +140

The Atlanta Braves may be the best team in baseball this season so there is always value when they come into a game as a heavy underdog like this. You should always play on road underdogs with a money line of +100 to +150 like Atlanta when they have an excellent bullpen whose WHIP is 1.150 or better and their starting pitcher is playing on 5 or 6 days of rest. This system is 64-38 (63%) over the last 5 seasons.

Atlanta is 19-5 against the money line over the last three seasons when playing in road games vs. poor fielding teams that are averaging 0.75 or more errors per game on the season. The Nationals have 8 errors in 9 games this season. Atlanta is hot offensively scoring 5.7 runs per game against right handed starters. They should be taking batting practice late in the game against a Nationals bullpen that has a 5.76 ERA this season.

Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals
Prediction: Kansas City Royals

When James Shields toes the slab against the Blue Jays in Kansas City Saturday evening he will do so knowing he is 14-2 his last sixteen team starts during April, including 10-0 the last ten. In addition, sports a 3-0 mark with a 2.09 ERA in his career team starts against Toronto. With R. A. Dickey still adjusting to life in the Junior Circuit, we recommend a 1-unit play on Kansas City.

Detroit vs. Oakland
Play: Under 7

Verlander Motowns starter today has pitched well against the As in the past and allowed just one run in his two victories in the American League Division Series against them last season, including a complete-game shutout in the deciding Game 5 conflict. Verlander has started his current campaign in strong form (16 KOs in 13 innings) and Im betting that will continue in this spot! Meanwhile Brett Anderson, starts for the As. He shutdown the Tigers and held them scoreless for six innings in Game 4 of the 2012 ALDS. The Southpaw hurler is a stable 2-2 with a 3.78 ERA in four regular season outings against Detroit. Look for these two top quality starters to help keep this contest on the low side of the number.
Tigers are 5-0 in Verlanders last 5 starts vs. Athletics.Under is 12-3-1 in Andersons last 16 starts vs. American League Central.

Under is 4-0-1 in Athletics last 5 games as a home underdog
Under is 9-1-1 in Verlanders last 11 road starts vs. a team with a winning record
Under is 20-6-5 in Tigers last 31 road games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
Under is 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings in Oakland.

Milwaukee vs. St. Louis
Pick: St. Louis -1.5

Series trends and current form all suggest the Cardinals to be worth a long look on Saturday against the sinking Brewers. These teams are headed in opposite directions, with the Redbirds on a 4-game uptick, and off a 2-0 shutout win on Friday over Milwaukee thanks largely to 7 innings of one-hit pitching by rookie starter Shelby Miller. Meanwhile, the Brewers are sinking at 2-7, and wasted a solid effort by starter Kyle Lohse last night. Note the pitching matchup specifics also favor the Cards; Adam Wainwright has been dominant over 17 career starts in the series, posting a 2.15 ERA. Meanwhile, Brew Crew starter Yovani Gallardo has historically had problems vs. St. Louis, as he's 1-9 with a 6.72 ERA in his 14 career starts against the Redbirds.

Here is today’s opener from Keeneland to get the day off to a good start:

KEE Race 1 Alw $60,000N2L (1:05 ET)
3 Off the Page 5-2
1 Special Jo 3-1
5 Ouimet 4-1
6 Strong Response 6-1

Analysis: Off the Page goes from turf to poly here after a game effort last out on the weeds at Gulfstream Park where the gelding came up just a neck shy of the top spot as the beaten favorite. The gelding broke his maiden two back in his third career start and was flattered when the runner up and ninth place finisher both came back to graduate in their next starts. He was third in his debut on poly at Arlington Park last summer and pedigree wise seems more suited to the faker stuff. He is a half to poly stakes winner Holiday for Kitten ($322,475) who won the Giant's Causeway on poly here at the spring '11 meeting. The Ward barn is off to a quick start at the meeting and is 26% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from turf to synth.

Special Jo made a good late rally to run second last out at Santa Anita Park in his first go off a 5 1/2 month layoff. This guy broke his maiden in his debut last year at Churchill Downs and then ran in four graded stakes, his best finish a runner up finish in the Sapling (G3) at Monmouth Park last September. He is by Johannesburg out of a Carson City mare and seems likely he will take to poly.

Wagering
WIN: #3 to win at 9-5 or better.
EX: 1,3 / 1,3,5
TRI: no play

Aqueduct Race 4 OClm $62,500N2X (2:20 ET)
8 Malibu Way 7-2
3 Yield Bogey 5-1
2 Exclusive Strike 5-2
5 Hangover Kid 8-1

Analysis: Malibu Way makes his second start off a eight month layoff for the Clement barn. This guy won the Lamplighter last year over ground labeled as good at Monmouth Park in his third career start. Last out at this level the colt stalked the early pace and then had to steady when caught in behind rivals in the stretch and could not recover. He should move forward with a better trip and already is proven over ground with some give to it. The barn is 21% winners with horses making their second start off a +180 day layoff.

Yield Bogey returns off a three month break here after failing to fire last out against non-winners of three optional claimers on the inner track. The gelding has done his best work on turf and returns to the grass here as he makes his first start off the claim by former Canani assistant Danny Gargan. Blinkers go on and this old timer is has finished in the money in seven graded stakes in his career. He has run well off the bench in the past and while he has lost a step or two from his younger days he looks like he fits here and may end up a decent price.

Wagering
WIN: No.8 to win at 5-2 or better.
EXACTA: 3,8 / 2,3,5,8
TRIFECTA: 3,8 / 2,3,5,8 / 1,2,3,5,8

Keeneland Race 5 Alw $60,000N1X (3:05 ET)
8 Mudflats 4-1
10 Red Rifle 3-1
4 Hard Acres 8-1
11 Pyrite Mountain 6-1

Analysis: Mudflats gets some needed class relief here after trying to head down the Derby Trail. Last out the gelding faded to finish a non threatening sixth in the Sunland Derby (G3) and two back had a troubled trip in a fifth place finish in the San Vicente (G2) where he was beaten just 2 1/2 lengths for the top spot. This will be his first go on poly but is certainly bred to handle it, by Tapit out of a Tale of the Cat mare.

Red Rifle tracked the early pace and drew off smartly to break his maiden in his debut going seven furlongs on the main track at Gulfstream Park. The $250,000 Keeneland purchase has a nice pedigree, by Giant’s Causeway out of the stakes winner May Night ($355,568). The colt has enough pedigree to handle the stretch out to two turns. The Pletcher barn is 34% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from sprint to route.

Wagering
WIN: No.8 to win at 3-1 or better.
EXACTA: 8,10 / 4,8,10,11
TRIFECTA: 8,10 / 4,8,10,11 / 2,4,8,10,11

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 The Distaff Hcp G2 (4:20 ET)
7 Villanesca 8-1
4 Cluster of Stars 1-1
2 Spectacular Sky 5-2
3 Nakano 6-1

Analysis: Villanesca tracked the early pace, had to wait briefly for some running room nearing the quarter pole when the hole closed up between foes, angled out and finished gamely to get the win against Alw-2 optional claimers. The runner up Clear Passaj came back to run second in the state bed Broadway in her next outing on March 30. The filly makes her second start off a two month break and is going to be sitting off what likely is going to be a contested pace. Decent value if she goes off near her 8-1 morning line.

Cluster of Stars is the obvious one to beat coming into the race undefeated in four career starts. She earned a big fig last out going gate to wire to beat Alw-12 optional claimers by 9 1/4 lengths. She did catch a racing strip that was kind to inside speed that day. Two back she won her stakes debut by taking the Correction over a nice filly in Nicole H, with the third place finisher Singlet coming back to win the restricted Ruby Rubles in her next outing on Feb. 22. Nicole H, an eight time stakes winner came back to run fourth in the Barbara Fritchie (G2) in her next start. The Asmussen filly owns solid early and mid pace numbers and will be tough here but figures to be around 3-5. Spectacular Sky has some early zip and if they hook up the chalk could be in for a fight here.

Wagering
WIN: #7 to win at 5-1 or better.
EX: 4,7 / 2,3,4,7
TRI: 4,7 / 2,3,4,7 / 2,3,4,6,7

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Keeneland:

KEE Race 8 The Madison G1 (4:35 ET)
6 Jamaican Smoke 5-1
1 Byrama 4-1
10 Fantasy of Flight 7-2
3 Holiday for Kitten 9-2

Analysis: Jamaican Smoke came back off a eight month layoff last out facing Alw-2 optional claimers at Gulfstream Park, dueling for the early lead and weakening inside the final furlong to check in third. She broke her maiden over the poly here in her only go over the fake stuff and two back ran a good second to Victory Ride (G3) at Belmont Park. The winner of that race to Emma's Encore, who came back to win the Prioress (G1) in her next outing. She sports a couple of bullet works at Palm Meadows since her last outing and is in good hands with the Kenneally barn. She will be tighter second off the bench and may appreciate the return to poly here.

Byrama cuts back from a mile on grass where she chased the early pace and weakened to finish third in the Buena Vista (G2) behind Mizdirection. She only has one try on a synthetic surface in her career, a runner up finish in the restricted CERF at Del Mar over polytrack last September. The cut back in distance should suit and the hot Rosario takes over.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 1,6 / 1,3,6,10
TRI: 1,6 / 1,3,6,10 / 1,3,6,7,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Aqueduct
R1: #2 Classic R and B 8-1
R3: #1 Ginger’s Joe 15-1
R4: #5 Hangover Kid 8-1
R6: #6 Pearl of Wisdom 8-1
R7: #6 Hope Still Springs 20-1
R8: #7 Villanesca 8-1
R9: #9 Washington’s Rules 8-1

Good luck today!

Keeneland

6th #6 Handsome Mike- 4 year old colt owned and trained by last year's Derby winning connections. He is in to get a tune up for a big stake on Derby week. He won the grade I PA Derby and only missed by only 4 lengths in two grade II stakes. He pressed the pace against Game On Dude, the fastest horse on the west coast. He out classes this field and is a best bet. We are afraid he will be closer to 6-5 than 9-2 .

Battagliaspicks 6-5-3

Aqueduct

1st #7 Terminus- Does his best running over this track with 3 wins and a second from just 5 starts. The big even money favorite entry are both taking big drops in class, maybe too big (meaning something is wrong) and we will try to beat them.

PRE-SCRATCHES

2nd: MSW, 3yo, 6f (P4, P3, DD)

Most Likely: #8 Jagger M 3-1
Best Value: #2 Early Success 8-1
Next Best: #3 Silver Value 2-1
Exotics Use: #5 This Ones for Tony 8-1

3rd: MSW, 3yo, 8.5f (P5, P3, DD)

Tough start to early P5 with 5 second time starters and host of other candidates including stretchouts and surface movers. Ten Indian (15-1), by good synth sire Speightstown, is half to poly pro Prince Teton who is in mindst of a 5 race win streak having terrorized $5k starters at Turfway this winter. Jet Force (Candy Ride) another 2nd timer and full brother to hard knocking and versatile Clubhouse Ride..

Most Likely: #8 Apex 3-1
Best Value: #3 Ten Indian 15-1
Next Best: #5 Bellarmine 4-1
Exotics Use: #6 Jet Force 20-1

4th: ALW/N3X, 4+, 9f-T (P3, DD)

Faves are fine but well drawn Cavalero and Tetradrachm are juicy numbers..

Best Value: #2 Cavalero 12-1
Next Best: #3 Tetradrachm 6-1
Exotics Use: #5 Imagining 5-2
Super Add: #6 Treasury Devil 7-2

5th: ALW/N1X, 3yo, 8.5f (P3, DD)

Every horse is different when it comes to adapting to the poly, but watch MSW 3rd race with Apex, Jet Force and Steel Dust Dancer for clues to Red Rifle here. Meanwhile, under radar Adena sire Silent Name gets poly poppers and if Leparoux can work out a trip from the #11 hole, Pyrite Mountain (6-1) can win here. Dallas Stewart had been trying to get Fipke homebred Perfect Title on the lawn in NoLa and KEE main is the next best thing..

Best Value: #11 Pyrite Mountain 6-1
Next Best: #10 Red Rifle 3-1
Exotics Use: #2 Perfect Title 6-1
Super Add: #7 Eton Blue 5-1

6th: 27th Commonwealth (G3), 4+, 7f (P4, P3, DD)

Short field and a bit of curiousity with all but Bernie the Maestro (won here) and Handsome Mike (4/0-0-1 at TP, HOL, FF) new to synthetic strip. Gantry figures to get lead and perhaps rather easily if Bernie the Maestro doesn't press the issue..

Most Likely: #5 Bernie the Maestro 5-2
Best Value: #6 Handsome Mike 9-2
Next Best: #1 Gantry 5-2

7th: 17th Shakertown (G3), 4+, 5.5f-T (P5, P3, DD)

8th: 12th Madison (G1), F&M-4+, 7f (P5, P3, DD)

Groupie Doll's win here last year, as well as that of Informed Decision ('09) and Ventura ('08), will stretch its' G1 status, but this hodge podge edition is more like those of Shotgun Gulch ('11) and Dr. Zic ('10)..

Most Likely: #10 Fantasy of Flight 7-2
Best Value: #8 Drama Drama 20-1
Next Best: #1 Byrama 4-1
Exotics Use: #6 Jamaican Smoke 5-1

9th: 25th Jenny Wiley (G1), F&M-4+, 8.5f-T (P4, P3, DD)

This nice group makes up for the Madison. Daisy Devine broke through in this event a year ago and can certainly defend, but expect she'll get more pressure than she did there when allowed a 25-50-1:15 opening three quarters. Centre Court figures to get ideal pounce position..

Most Likely: #1 Centre Court 5-2
Next Best: #8 Daisy Devine 4-1
Best Value: #7 Abaco 15-1
Exotics Use: #6 Samitar 7-2

10th: 89th Blue Grass (G1), 3yo, 9f (P3, DD)

Utterly inscrutable gathering where no combination of superfecta players would be questioned. Of the favorites, feels like McPeek and Java's War is the most embraceable and after that it's a free for all. I'll use Tesseron (ridiculous 50-1), Footbridge (20-1), Undrafted (10-1) and Dynamic Sky (10-1) with him..

Most Likely: #4 Java's War 4-1
Best Value: #9 Tesseron 50-1

Most Likely: #1 Dubious Miss 5-2
Best Value: #5 Street Serenade 15-1
Next Best: #9 Workin for Hops 4-1

MLB

OAKLAND (+115) over Detroit
4:05 p.m. ET Freebie
It took us three days to get them to finally play a game but it was worth it as we cashed in on the Indians as your Bonus Play last night. Today we will back the hottest team in baseball over one of baseball's best pitchers in what looks like a Vegas trap. The Oakland Athletics have won nine straight and face the ace Justin Verlander. Verlander allowed only one run in his two victories in the American League Division Series over Oakland last October and has owned the A's over his career. He’s coming off a strong effort against the Yankees last Sunday and has led the American League in strikeouts the last two seasons and has 11 through his first 12 innings in 2013. So why is Verlander only a -125 favorite here? Because Vegas is trying to suck you in on him and the Tigers! We will not take the bait but instead back the red-hot A's and their outstanding pitcher Brett Anderson who is off to an impressive start with 16 strikeouts over 13 innings in his first two outings.

Free Saturday MLB Team Total

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS OVER 4 RUNS
Several Cards have hammered Gallardo, and we also have a "day game" here which the ball carries better in, too. We also have some "slight wind blowing out" 10mph to dead center & game time temp in high 50's. Add on the hideous Milwaukee bullpen and I really like this Team Total to cash for us here.
