Colorado's six-game win streak will be put to a road test as the Buffaloes are in the midst of a stretch of six straight and nine of 11 road/neutral-site contests. That journey resumes Saturday in Honolulu as Colorado tips off the eight-team Diamond Head Classic with a matchup against Indiana State of the Missouri Valley Conference.


The Buffaloes began the stretch with a 78-75 comeback win at New Mexico on Dec. 11. A week-long break for finals has followed, leading into three games in four days at the Diamondhead Classic, which also includes UNLV, Rhode Island, Bucknell, Charlotte, TCU and host Hawaii. After the tourney wraps up on Christmas Day, Colorado will then have nine days before tipping off Pac-12 play in Arizona with two straight and five of its first seven conference contests on the road. The current six-game swing away from home is the Buffaloes' longest in the regular season since December of 1986.

ABOUT COLORADO (8-1): The Buffaloes' only loss came Nov. 20 at San Diego (70-64), and they lead the Pac-12 in field-goal percentage (48.6) and scoring margin (plus-14.8) while ranking second in scoring (84.7 points per game) and average rebounding margin (plus-10.6). Point guard McKinley Wright paces the squad with 14.8 points and six assists and also is averaging 5.7 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field. Forwards Tyler Bey (12.6 points, team-leading 8.9 rebounds) and Lucas Siewert also are averaging double digits for the Buffaloes, with the latter having connected on 16-of-29 3-point attempts (55.2 percent) so far.


ABOUT INDIANA STATE (6-3): The Sycamores have dropped two of their last three following a 6-1 start, beating only Division II Truman State (77-69) since Dec. 1. Indiana State averages 73.4 points per outing, and more than half come from starting guards Jordan Barnes (21.0) and Tyreke Key (17.9), with the former also pacing the squad with 4.4 assists per game. Barnes and Key also have combined to hit 40 of the team's 57 3-pointers as Indiana State is tied with MVC-rival Creighton atop the national 3-point accuracy rankings at 44.5 percent.

1. Colorado is aiming for its second regular-season tournament title in as many years after winning all three of its games in last season's relocated Paradise Jam in Lynchburg, Va.

The 15-day layoff worked wonders for Miami as the rested Hurricanes came back from the break to earn an elusive win, ending their four-game skid with an 80-73 triumph over Houston Baptist. The Hurricanes continue their homestand Saturday against in-state foe Florida Atlantic, which will head 56 miles south looking for its second straight win.


The Hurricanes welcomed the rest as they remain short-handed with just seven scholarship players on the active roster, although they remain hopeful that junior forward Dewan Hernandez can join them soon as he has missed all 10 games while the school and the NCAA review his eligibility. The lack of depth leaves them vulnerable down the stretch of games, and foul trouble particularly hurt forward Sam Waardenburg in the win over Houston Baptist, leaving center Ebuka Izundu as the only big man. The senior responded, playing a career-high 34 minutes and did not get whistled for a single foul, registering 15 points and 11 rebounds -- his fourth career double double -- along the way. "We don't have inside depth," head coach Jim Larranaga told reporters. "It's really important for the opponent. They can take advantage of that. By Ebuka not being in foul trouble and being able to keep him in the game really helps us."

ABOUT FAU (8-3): The Owls are getting it done at home with a perfect 5-0 mark for the first time since the 2014-15 season, but they are just 1-2 in true road games, and this meeting with the Hurricanes begins a four-game roadswing. Senior forward Simeon Lepichev comes off a career-high performance (20 points, nine rebounds), making him the sixth different Owl to produce a 20-point outing this year. Junior forward Jailyn Ingram leads the team in scoring (18.9), rebounding (8.2) and blocked shots (1.0) for the Owls, who average 77.0 points per game.


ABOUT MIAMI (6-4): The Hurricanes had a hot shooting night in the win over Houston Baptist, hitting 29-of-57 from the floor (50.9 percent) and 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from 3-point range, but their opponent had an almost equally big night against the Miami defense, shooting 49.1 percent from the field and 11-of-23 from beyond the arc. Five Hurricanes average at least 12.3 points per game, led by guards Chris Lykes (16.6) and Zach Johnson (13.2), while Izundu ranks second in the ACC in field-goal percentage (68.5). Guard DJ Vasiljevic leads the ACC in 3-pointers per game (3.1) and has hit at least one trey in 23 straight games -- the longest current streak in the conference and sixth-longest in school history.

The Western Michigan Broncos may have had a bit of a hangover from facing Michigan, so they did not exactly put forth the best effort in their last outing. How much can they improve upon that, as they take the floor against a Horizon League opponent?


The Milwaukee Panthers have faced better competition than this, although their defensive strengths don't necessarily match up too well with what WMU can do best.


They should be an intriguing matchup, and it takes place on Saturday afternoon at the University Arena in the Read Fieldhouse in Kalamazoo, MI.

ABOUT MILWAUKEE: Last season, Milwaukee (also referred to as Wisconsin-Milwaukee) finished 16-17 and lost to Wright State in the Horizon League tournament, although they did score a victory over eventual Final Four participant Loyola-Chicago during the regular season. This year they are 4-8 (5-6 ATS), losing by eleven points to Cincinnati and 19 points to Buffalo, their two most distinguished opponents. Their last game was on Sunday, an 87-64 victory over Division II Wisconsin Lutheran. DeAndre Abram had 25 points and 11 rebounds. He had scored 20 points versus UMKC on the Thursday before that, and on the strength of these two performances, the George Mason transfer was named Horizon League player of the week. Abram is a redshirt junior and 6-8 guard out of Carrollton, TX. Darius Roy is actually the team's leading scorer, registering 15.3 points per game. Milwaukee defends the three-pointer very well, allowing just 30.2%, but Western Michigan probably does its best work inside the arc. Milwaukee is not a good shooting team; they hit only 31% from three-point range, with senior guard Jake Wright the only player who is a real threat from out there (40%). They also shoot only 45.8% from two-point territory. And distribution appears to be a problem, as only a handful of teams in the country have a lower ratio of assists to field goals.


ABOUT WESTERN MICHIGAN: As we said at the outset, Western Michigan likely had a hangover from their game against Michigan, where they lost a lead that they had late in the first half, and went on to a defeat, albeit a very competitive one. On Wednesday night, they lost 85-72 to Dayton. It was not a sterling defensive effort from them, as they allowed the Flyers to make 28 out of 38 in two-point range – with Josh Cunningham hitting 10 of 13. And Seth Dugan, who averages 15.5 points and 9.1 rebounds, took a real blow to his reputation as he had only four points and one rebound. The star of the game for the Broncos was Michael Flowers, who scored 20 points and has had 76 in his last three games, including 31 against the Wolverines. During this time he has shot 25 of 42 from the floor. WMU (5-6 straight-up, 5-4 against the number) has been a team that does not necessarily take care of the ball all that well, committing a turnover on 22.2% of its possessions. Saturday is "Ugly Sweater Night" in Kalamazoo. As for ugly shooting, we can credit (or discredit, if you will) 6-3 freshman Adrian Martin, who in 16.2 minutes per game has shot just 18.9% from the field and hit only five of his 27 attempts from pre-point range.


EXTRA POINTS


1. Bruce Pearl began his coaching career at Milwaukee, going 82-38 in four seasons from 2002-05. Of course, he went on to coach at Tennessee and has now turned Auburn into a national power.


2. Current Milwaukee coach Pat Baldwin has a 20-25 record. Prior to this job, he spent five years as an assistant with Northwestern, during which time the Wildcats gained their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid.


3. Neither of these teams forces turnovers on defense; Milwaukee is 343rd at 14.4%, while Western Michigan is 350th at 14.1% (that is expressed in terms of percentage of possessions on which turnovers are committed).

Florida State looks for its sixth straight win before heading into the holiday break as it takes on Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon from the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. The 12th-ranked Seminoles are coming off a 95-81 win over North Florida on Wednesday, while the Billikens are fresh off a win over North Carolina Central.


Sophomore Mfiondu Kabengele scored a career-high 24 points and added seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench as Florida State dispatched of the Ospreys. The 6-10, 250-pound sophomore shot 7-of-12 from the field and 10-of-10 from the free-throw line while also making quite an impression on the opposition. "A beast. And he is from the old school. He ain't from the new school," North Florida coach Matthew Driscoll told reporters after the game when asked what he thought about Kabengele. Saint Louis got 19 points from Javon Bess as it rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to beat the Eagles 74-65.

It is well known that Virginia thrives on perhaps the best defensive system in the country, but the third-ranked Cavaliers are also showing they have a little more firepower on the other end of the court. They will try for another complete effort and an 11th straight win to begin the season when they host in-state foe William & Mary on Saturday.


Ty Jerome scored 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting and Kyle Guy added 18 as Virginia had enough weapons to overcome a second straight off night for then-leading scorer De'Andre Hunter in an impressive 69-52 win at South Carolina on Wednesday. "Ty was so important all game," Guy told reporters. "He was aggressive the whole game, and it really took a lot of pressure off the rest of us. ... We joke about how we take turns. When someone's feeling it, they're feeling it, and he can do it as good as anybody in the country." Jerome seized the team scoring lead at 14.8 points per game, just a shade better than Hunter, who has a total of 14 points on 3-of-16 shooting over his last two contests. The Tribe, who haven't won in Charlottesville since 1977, are coming off a 106-89 victory over Division IIII William Peace on Sunday.

ABOUT WILLIAM & MARY (4-7): The Tribe will try to put up points against the nation's top defense behind junior star Nathan Knight, who leads the team in scoring (19.1) and is averaging 25 points and 13 rebounds over the last two games. Fellow junior Justin Pierce has posted averages of 19.5 points and 10 boards over that same span and he leads the team on the glass with 10.2 per contest and in assists (3.6). Junior Matt Milon (12.0) and freshman L.J. Owens (9.4) are the third- and fourth-ranked scorers on the squad and represent William & Mary's best threats from long range, making a combined 41-of-101 on the season.


ABOUT VIRGINIA (10-0): Jerome also tied a season high with seven assists to go along with six rebounds in the win over the Gamecocks, while Guy finished with at least 15 points for the fourth straight game. "I think they're triple-threat guys. They're complete," coach Tony Bennett told the media. "They obviously can shoot the ball from deep. We try to give them good looks. "They're capable of putting it on the floor, driving, drawing fouls or hitting pull-ups, floaters. And they'll make the right passes." Junior Mamadi Diakite made 5-of-6 shots from the floor in the win while standout freshman Kihei Clark was able to play 24 minutes just nine days after surgery to repair a hairline fracture on his left wrist.

While James Palmer Jr. is in the midst of the best offensive stretch of his career, Nebraska's defense has arguably been more impressive for the bulk of the season. The Big Ten's third-leading scorer and one of college basketball's stingiest defenses return to the hardwood for the first time in nearly a week Saturday when the 22nd-ranked Cornhuskers host Cal State Fullerton and attempt to run their home winning streak to 18 games.


Palmer scored a season-high 30 points in a 19-point win over on Dec. 8 win against Creighton and followed it up with 29 more in Sunday's 79-56 rout of Oklahoma State in South Dakota, but Nebraska's 13th-ranked scoring defense more than held its own, limiting the Cowboys to their second-lowest point total of the season. "With Oklahoma State and the way they play so physical, you have to run to that fight. And we didn't. We kind of warmed to the fight, took a look at our blood, then were like, 'Eh, OK. We'll fight.' ... You could see that in the second half with how well we played defense," coach Tim Miles told the Lincoln Journal-Star. The Cornhuskers have held five of their 11 opponents to their lowest total of the season and could be on the verge of finding a sixth victim in the Titans, who are averaging 56.3 points during a three-game slide. Cal State Fullerton failed to reach the 60-point mark for the second time in three games and fourth time all season in Sunday's 68-54 loss at San Francisco.

ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON (3-8): Kyle Allman Jr. (18.3 points) is second in the Big West in scoring and already has a pair of games in which he topped 35 points this season. Fellow senior guard Khalil Ahmad (17.6) ranks third in the conference in scoring and has also posted two explosive scoring efforts - including a career-high 40 points versus Monmouth and 29 against Division III foe Cal Lutheran - although he is averaging only 8.3 over his last three outings. Jackson Rowe (10.4 points, 6.7 rebounds) - a 6-7 forward - is the tallest Cal State Fullerton player who plays at least 15 minutes per game, and the lack of size has played a role in the Titans 266th ranking in the country in rebounding margin (minus-1.8).


ABOUT NEBRASKA (9-2): Reserve guard Thomas Allen, who missed practice all week and went to a Lincoln hospital Friday with a stomach virus and migraine headaches, made the four-hour drive to South Dakota on Sunday and contributed 14 points in 27 minutes against the Cowboys. "For him to come in and be able to understand the defensive game plan and what's going on, I think you can see what we saw in the recruiting process. Sometimes he's kind of the fifth Beatle. He did a great job tonight and made huge baskets," Miles said. Junior forward Isaiah Roby is as responsible for the Cornhuskers' defensive prowess as much as anyone, ranking second on the team in rebounds (5.8), second in steals (1.7) and first in blocks (1.5).

Syracuse typically plays a soft nonconference schedule, but the team already has lost four games this season with its ACC schedule looming. The Orange certainly cannot afford another defeat at home against Arkansas State on Saturday, when the Orange will try to put together a crisper offensive effort.


In its last two outings, Syracuse has lost at the Carrier Dome to Old Dominion and Buffalo. "It's the second (straight) time we've been in this situation," senior guard Frank Howard said after the 71-59 loss to Buffalo. "A gritty game -- and we came out on the losing end. Nobody's happy in this locker room." That certainly includes coach Jim Boeheim, who needs to help his players get better looks against a Red Wolves team that gives up nearly 77 points per game. "We can't score. We've got to find a way to get some offense," Boeheim said. "We need a couple of good weeks to find our offense. If we don't, we're lost."

ABOUT ARKANSAS STATE (5-6): The Red Wolves enter having won two straight games for the first time this season - a pair of tight wins over Florida Atlantic (in double overtime) and Missouri State. Ty Cockfield is by far their best player, averaging 21.3 points - nearly twice as many as the next-highest scorer - and knocking down a cool 43.9 percent of his 3-pointers. Missouri State limited Cockfield to eight points after he had registered 20-plus points in six straight games, including a season-high 34-point effort against Florida Atlantic.


ABOUT SYRACUSE (7-4): The Orange shoot only 41.5 percent as a team and are particularly poor from 3-point range (29.5 percent) and the foul line (67.4). Tyus Battle is averaging a team-high 17.8 points and Elijah Hughes (14.5) and Oshae Brissett (14.5) aren't far behind, although the trio shot a collective 3-of-16 from 3-point range in the loss to Buffalo. Hughes led the team with 16 points in that one but also committed six of the 16 turnovers by Syracuse, which has lost four nonconference games for just the fourth time in Boeheim's four-plus decades on the sideline.

Texas A&M has played all season without senior guard Admon Gilder and it looks like that trend will continue. Gilder announced on social media Friday - ahead of Saturday's home game against Marshall - he remains out indefinitely with a blood clot in his arm.


Gilder was the Aggies' top returning scorer (12.3 points) and 3-point shooter (39.5 percent) but has been helping the team as a veteran voice on the bench. "I would continue to say he's out indefinitely," coach Billy Kennedy told the Dallas Morning News on Friday. "He's looking into getting some help with that and hopefully the help will get him ready and he'll be ready for next year." Solid play from three transfers has helped the Aggies fill Gilder's void. The Thundering Herd, playing the second of a five-game road trip, hasn't beaten a SEC team since a home win against Georgia in 1999.

ABOUT MARSHALL (7-4): Senior guard Jon Elmore leads the Thundering Herd with 20.8 points per game and is one of three players - with sophomore forward Jannson Williams (9.6 points) and senior guard Rondale Watson (6.2 points) - averaging 4.7 rebounds. Senior guard C.J. Burks adds 18.0 points per contest after scoring in double digits in all 11 games while three more players - including freshman guard Taevion Kinsey (with a 63-percent shooting clip off the bench) - add at least six points. Junior college transfers Brandon Mahan (Chipola College) and Wendell Mitchell (Trinity Valley Community College) add 8.7 and 7.8 points per contest, respectively, and all three transfers started or the Aggies when they beat Valparaiso for their fourth straight win Wednesday. Sophomore guard TJ Starks leads the Aggies with 13.0 points per game and sophomore wing Savion Flagg averages 12.1 points and a team-best 7.0 rebounds.

The Morgan State Bears are struggling for survival at this point. They come into this game with a three-game winning streak on the line but, it means nothing. * The one thing we will give you here in these previews, is real! * Stats don’t lie, records don’t lie-- for the most part and we will not sugarcoat the reality of a team’s chances to make the tournament or to win an upcoming game. Of course, we are not always right, how would that be possible with the many hundreds of games over the course of a season? The Old Dominion Monarchs are proving their worthiness as a contender in Conference USA, although not one in-conference game has been played to this point, the current seven-game winning streak goes a long way in showing this teams metal. With just one hiccup in the last nine games, this team is for real and they are going to be a tough opponent in conference play.

ABOUT OLD DOMINION (9-3): The Monarchs are scoring fewer points per game with 65.6, however, they are allowing just 56.8. They are not shooting all that great and come in with a 41% average from the field. If this number improves, this team will be dangerous.

The Chicago State Cougars are trying to wiggle themselves out of a cycle of ineptitude, and they are counting on the son of a local coaching legend to help them do that. So far the results haven't really manifested themselves.


The Northern Illinois Huskies obviously do some recruiting in the Windy City, and they are trying to bounce back from another loss suffered at the hands of Northern Kentucky, with a genuine national power up next on the schedule. Can anybody say the word "sandwich"?

ABOUT CHICAGO STATE: This team finished 3-29 last season, with only one victory in Western Athletic Conference plays. During the off-season, they fired Tracy Gildy, who had been both the coach and the athletic director. The first-year coach is Lance Irvin; his father Mac guided an extremely successful AAU program, and thus he attained legendary status. So it is safe to say he has some real connections within the community for the purposes of recruiting. But they will have to do a lot more with the current program; the Cougars stand at 3-11, and even though they did have consecutive wins over East-West University, Eastern Illinois and Trinity Christian, they have lost their last three games by a total of 105 points. Irvin does not distribute the minutes liberally; only six players have averaged 15 minutes or more per game. The leading scorer is Anthony Harris at 14.7 points per contest, and Christian Jacob is the top rebounder at 5.9 per game. Six-foot guard Rob Shaw is 15th in the country in Assist Rate, but he's been a horrible shooter, hitting just 19.4% from beyond the arc and 37.3% overall. Chicago State's adjusted efficiency levels on both sides of the ball are among the bottom 20 in the country. They are 320th in the nation defending both two-pointers and three-pointers, and they allow 60.3% shooting inside the arc. Last time out they were beaten 81-52 by Western Illinois, in a game where they made just 21 of 60 shots and missed half their free throws.


ABOUT NORTHERN ILLINOIS: Well, the Huskies allowed Northern Kentucky to complete a season sweep against them, losing 65-62 on Thursday. Dante Thorpe had 17 points and leading scorer Eugene German had 18, but as a team, NIU made just six out of 22 three-pointers, shot only nine free throws (compared to 30 for NKU) and forced only five turnovers. On an overall basis, they have the fifth-best Effective Field Goal Percentage in NCAA Division I basketball at 58.5%, and they are 42.4% from three-point range. But opponents love to shoot threes against Northern Illinois (6-5 SU, 6-3 ATS); in fact, 43.9% of the points they give up have been made from there. They do catch a lucky break here, as Chicago State is just 28% from downtown. As far as national individual rankings are concerned, 6-7 forward Levi Bradley is 21st in the nation in Offensive Rating, while 6-9 big man Lacey James is in the top 40 in Offensive Rebounding Percentage. Northern Illinois' Adjusted Offensive Efficiency (according to the metrics produced by KenPom) is 34th nationwide, compared to Chicago State, which is 334th. So yes, that is quite a difference.

1. Chicago State coach Lance Irvin was an assistant to his brother Nick at Morgan Park High School in Chicago immediately prior to his current job. We should also add that he was dean of students at the same time. He has been an assistant coach at nine different NCAA schools, including Loyola-Chicago, SMU, Texas A&M, and Missouri.


2. Dante Thorpe is the leading playmaker for Northern Illinois, with just 30 assists in 11 games. The Huskies have scored only 48% of their field goals by way of assist (266 in the nation).


3. Northern Illinois will not play for another week after this, and then they will travel to East Lansing to play Michigan State.
