Preview: Avalanche (6-9) at Canadiens (13-2)

Date: November 14, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Patrick Roy has his Colorado Avalanche off to a promising start on one of the franchise's longest road trips since its move to Denver.

The Avalanche would appear to have a considerable challenge in their attempt at a third consecutive win Saturday night against Roy's former team, facing the league-best Montreal Canadiens without captain Gabriel Landeskog.

Colorado (6-9-1) has opened the trip by winning back-to-back games for the first time this season, beating Philadelphia 4-0 on Tuesday and rallying for a 3-2 victory over Boston on Thursday. The Avalanche gave up both Bruins goals in the first six minutes but tied the game by the end of the opening period.

Matt Duchene's sixth goal in five games put them ahead for good with 13:11 remaining.

"It's hard to be confident in those times with what we've gone through, but we're fighting through and we're showing good character," Duchene said. "It was just a great team effort today. ... We need a big road trip and this is a great start."

Landeskog was ejected in the second period for an illegal hit to Bruins forward Brad Marchand's head and was suspended for two games Friday. Marchand responded by punching him in the face.

"I tried to let up and then I tried to skate up and apologize and tell him I didn't mean to come across and ... obviously he wasn't hurt with that sucker punch," Landeskog said. "I'm happy he didn't get hurt. I feel like the principle point of contact was the shoulder."

Colorado is in the midst of a seven-game trip that matches its longest since relocating from Quebec after the 1994-95 season. In their return to that province, the Avalanche will take on a Canadiens team that's 7-0-1 at home this season.

Montreal (13-2-2) is 4-0-2 in its last six overall despite playing without star goaltender Carey Price. The reigning league MVP and Vezina Trophy winner, out since Oct. 29 due to a lower-body injury, is expected to miss at least two more games.

Mike Condon has a 1.81 goals-against average in six starts during his absence but couldn't hold a third-period lead Wednesday in a 4-3 shootout loss in Pittsburgh. He gave up the tying goal with 6:25 left in regulation and couldn't stop either of the Penguins' two shootout attempts.

"(Condon) played great and gave us a chance," captain Max Pacioretty said. "He had another outstanding game and in the next game we have to play a little better in front of him."

Colorado also could still be without its regular No. 1 goaltender. Semyon Varlamov has missed the last three games with a groin injury and remains day-to-day. Backup Reto Berra has played well in his place, giving up a combined four goals.

Montreal has won the past three meetings with Colorado and each of the last two at home. P.K. Subban had three goals and one assist in last season's two-game sweep of the Avalanche.

Seven of Subban's last eight points have come on the power play, and the Canadiens have scored with the man advantage in seven consecutive games. Their last eight-game streak was Jan. 7-21, 2009.

Duchene, who has nine points in six games this month, has totaled one goal and four assists in a four-game point streak against the Canadiens.

Preview: Sharks (7-8) at Sabres (7-8)

Date: November 14, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Overcoming a rough start to reach .500 could be viewed as quite an accomplishment for a rebuilding team that finished at the bottom of the NHL the previous two seasons.

That's not enough to satisfy the young Buffalo Sabres, though.

Surging Buffalo can earn its sixth victory in seven tries by winning a ninth straight meeting with the visiting San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.

The Sabres (8-8-0) are off to their best 16-game start since beginning 10-6-0 in 2011-12 and are at .500 for the first time since the end of the lockout-shortened 2013 season.

They've won five of six to hit that mark and extended their winning streak to three with Thursday's 3-2 victory at Florida. Buffalo already is more than a third of the way to reaching last year's win total of 23 and is on the verge of having more wins than losses for the first time since being 2-1-0 in 2012-13.

"We started the season 2-6, and 3-7 in our first 10," coach Dan Bylsma said. "We thought we were better than that."

Ryan O'Reilly, acquired in an offseason trade with Colorado, has a team highs of nine assists and 13 points, and No. 2 overall pick Jack Eichel leads the club with six goals.

Both were held off the score sheet Thursday, though, as Brian Gionta, Cody Franson and Sam Reinhart scored. Rasmus Ristolainen finished with two assists to add to his three goals during a three-game point streak.

"We're going to attack and we're going to be fine in our zone," winger Marcus Foligno told the team's official website. "No days off around here, that's the biggest thing. We won (both games on the road trip), but it's no big deal. We're .500, not first in the league. That's our goal."

Gionta had two goals and an assist in a 4-1 win over San Jose in the previous meeting Nov. 18 - the Sabres' eighth straight victory in the series. The Sharks have lost on their last five trips to Buffalo since last winning there Dec. 2, 2005.

San Jose (8-8-0) looks to snap that drought after beginning a six-game trip with Friday's 3-2 win over Detroit. Joe Pavelski scored to give him five of his team-high nine goals on the road, while Matt Nieto and Melker Karlsson also scored.

The Sharks won't play at home until facing defending champion Chicago on Nov. 25.

"This is a tough road trip, so to start it with a good team win is great," said Pavelski, who has one assist in his last seven against Buffalo. "Now we can think about tomorrow. This is a lot of games on the road, so we can't start looking ahead."

Martin Jones made 27 saves, but it's unclear if he'll start both ends of the back-to-back. Alex Stalock, who has a 2.85 goals-against average in three starts and two relief efforts, could get his first start since beating Florida on Nov. 5.

Chad Johnson could be back in net for Buffalo after rookie Linus Ullmark had 36 saves to beat the Panthers. Johnson, who has never faced the Sharks, had 30 saves in a 4-1 win at Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

Sabres defenseman Mike Weber, who hasn't played since Nov. 7, had surgery Friday for a lower-body injury and is out indefinitely.

Preview: Coyotes (9-6) at Blue Jackets (5-12)

Date: November 14, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

It took the Arizona Coyotes 25 games to get to 10 wins last season, and they went on to finish last in the Pacific Division.

Should their winning streak reach four games Saturday night in Columbus, they'll have done it in 17 this time around with the top of the division in sight.

The Coyotes (9-6-1) preceded a four-game road trip with Thursday's 4-1 home win over Edmonton, winning three straight for the second time this season. They haven't won four in a row since stringing five together from Oct. 26-Nov. 5, 2013.

Max Domi had a goal and an assist, giving the rookie three goals on the winning streak.

"We're really excited and happy with how we're playing," said Domi, who has 15 points in his first 16 NHL games. "Obviously, slow starts is something that has been a problem, but it makes it that much sweeter."

Arizona has come from at least a goal down in each game on the winning streak and is averaging 2.88 goals per game after finishing ahead of only Buffalo last season with 2.01.

"It hasn't always been easy coming back from deficits the past few years, so it's nice to see that we can do it," goaltender Mike Smith said. "It shows a lot about our group."

Smith has been better over a 3-1-0 span with a 2.34 goals-against average after going 1-3-1 with 4.55 mark over his previous seven. He's also 4-1-1 with a 1.44 GAA and two shutouts in his last seven against the Blue Jackets.

Arizona won both meetings last season with 10 goals scored, and its held Columbus to 1.75 goals per game over a 5-1-2 span.

The Blue Jackets (5-12-0) didn't require a whole lot of offense in Friday's 2-1 win in Pittsburgh. Scott Hartnell and Brandon Saad scored in the second period as they won for the fifth time in nine games after a 0-8-0 start.

Hartnell has six goals in his last eight games, Saad added an assist and has six points in his last six, and the team overcame the loss of Brandon Dubinsky due to an upper-body injury to bounce back from Tuesday's 5-3 home loss to Vancouver.

"We found a way to get it done," coach John Tortorella told the team's official website. "I think it's a really good answer after a really, really hard loss for those guys against Vancouver. It's funny how it worksâ?¦you lose a big guy who eats up a lot of minutes (Dubinsky) and guys are moved in and out of positions. I'm just happy the way they banded together - I thought we played really well as a team."

It was just the second time this season the Blue Jackets have held a team to one goal, and they remain without a shutout. They'd given up nine goals in the previous two games.

"Our defense played really well tonight," Nick Foligno said. "We were battling, we were good along the walls, and we made them play in their end. That's how we play: we're a hard, heavy, forechecking team ... and to hold a high-offensive team to one goal and get a couple of our own, it says a lot about our team."

Sergei Bobrovsky still has a ways to go to correct an .888 save percentage, but Curtis McElhinney could complete the back-to-back set. The Columbus backup has allowed three goals in all three of his starts, though his only career game against Arizona resulted in a 34-save shutout.

Preview: Wild (10-3) at Stars (13-4)

Date: November 14, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Minnesota Wild are on a roll even with one of their top goal scorers missing, but they'll face one of the league's most potent offensive teams Saturday night.

The Wild will seek a season-high fourth consecutive victory when they visit the Dallas Stars.

Zach Parise is week to week because of a sprained right MCL suffered in a 3-2 loss to Nashville on Nov. 5. Minnesota (10-3-2) has scored a combined nine goals in three consecutive wins without its winger, who had seven in 12 games.

Jason Zucker scored twice, including in overtime, in a 3-2 victory against Carolina on Thursday. Thomas Vanek tallied his third goal in two games in the opener of a four-game trip to tie Parise for the team lead.

The Wild rank among the league's top 10 with 3.07 goals per game, but Dallas is averaging 3.65.

The Western Conference-leading Stars (13-4-0) boast two of the NHL's top scorers in Tyler Seguin (25 points) and Jamie Benn (22).

Benn, last season's scoring champ, is among the league leaders with 11 goals while Seguin has nine.

"If we had a full lineup, it would be a challenge. With the guys that we have out, it will be an even greater one," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said.

Dallas was held in check in the opener of a three-game homestand Tuesday, a 3-2 loss to Toronto, but rebounded two nights later with a 6-3 victory against Winnipeg.

Benn scored the go-ahead goal on a power play with 5:55 remaining, less than five minutes after Dallas gave up the tying goal. The Stars then finished with their highest-scoring output of the season thanks to a pair of empty-netters.

"You have to deal with adversity. I think we questioned some of our mental toughness last year, and I think this year it's been good," coach Lindy Ruff said. "I think part of it is you have to stay calm. There's going to be some breaks that go the wrong way. There's going to be some calls that go the wrong way."

Ruff's team lost four of five meetings with Minnesota last season and was held to two goals or fewer in three games. The Stars' win over their Central Division rivals was a 7-1 rout Jan. 3 that matched their largest margin of victory in 2014-15.

Vernon Fiddler had two goals in that game and a team-best three with one assist in the five matchups. Seguin had a goal and an assist in each of his final two games against the Wild, while Benn had four assists in the series.

Parise paced Minnesota with two goals and six assists, but Mikael Granlund was also highly productive. He had a goal in each of his four matchups and two assists in a 6-2 home victory Feb. 22.

Vanek has six goals and eight assists in 13 career games against the Stars.

Dallas forward Patrick Eaves was taken off injured reserve (lower body), but it's unclear if he'll end his 14-game absence Saturday. Travis Moen, who has missed 13 contests with an upper-body ailment, is expected to return soon as well.

Preview: Blackhawks (8-7) at Blues (11-4)

Date: November 14, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

Searching for a boost to help halt their current rough stretch, the Chicago Blackhawks will get a lift with Duncan Keith returning.

The two-time Norris Trophy winner will return from injury Saturday night when the visiting Blackhawks look to avoid a fourth consecutive loss to the rival St. Louis Blues.

Out since Oct. 17 and initially expected to miss four-to-six weeks for surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee, Keith was activated by Chicago (8-7-1) on Friday. Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was happy to have his three-time All-Star defenseman back, though he cautioned Keith's minutes will be closely watched.

'He should enhance all situational plays: power play, penalty killing, 5-on-5, important minutes, first and last shifts of periods and games,' Quenneville told the team's official website. 'A lot of times he's a key factor in all those critical shifts. It's a big void. I thought defensively we weren't bad in that stretch, but certainly his presence is going to make a big difference.'

Keith had two assists and was a minus-2 while Chicago split the six games he played.

The Blackhawks gave up two goals in winning their first game without Keith then recorded back-to-back shutouts. Since then, they've yielded 25 goals and allowed opponents to convert 5 of 15 power plays while going 2-4-1.

In addition to Keith, Chicago will also have veteran defenseman Michael Rozsival (ankle) back. Rozsival was activated on Friday after being out since May 7 against Minnesota in the Western Conference semifinals.

Chicago could have used both Nov. 4 when it led St. Louis 5-2 after one period but lost 6-5 in overtime.

Corey Crawford made 23 saves in a defeat that began the Blackhawks' current 1-2-1 stretch. Crawford, who has a 4.15 goals-against average in the last four contests, was in net for each of Chicago's three straight losses to the Blues. Backup Scott Darling, 1-2-0 with a 3.36 GAA as a starter this season, has never faced St. Louis.

Blues coach Ken Hitchcock called the opener of his team's four-game trip last week in Chicago "a real courageous win." St. Louis followed that victory with shutouts at Nashville and New Jersey before its three-game winning stretch ended with Thursday's 6-3 loss to the sizzling New York Rangers.

The Blues (11-4-1) have yet to lose consecutive games in regulation.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored his eighth goal to tie Alexander Steen for the team lead, but Jake Allen was pulled for allowing three goals on five shots in the first period. St. Louis' 17 goals given up in the opening period are among the most in the NHL.

"We've got to be better from the first drop of the puck," forward David Backes said. "That's on us. We've got to be better from the start."

Allen, who allowed five goals in his six starts prior to Thursday, stopped 27 of 28 shots in relief of Brian Elliott at Chicago last week. After yielding three third-period goals in a 4-1 loss to the Blackhawks on Dec. 3, Allen is 3-0-0 with a 1.08 GAA against them.

Tarasenko has three goals and two assists in his last six games, and two with an assist in his last two against the Blackhawks. Steen snapped a four-game regular-season point drought against Chicago with two goals this month.

Preview: Oilers (6-11) at Kings (10-6)

Date: November 14, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

The Pacific Division-leading Los Angeles Kings are receiving strong play from their special teams but are struggling to string together victories.

A home matchup against the Edmonton Oilers should help them record consecutive wins for the first time this month.

Before embarking on a road-heavy portion of the schedule, the Kings go for a seventh straight home victory over the Oilers on Saturday night.

After dropping out of first place with a 3-2 loss to Arizona on Tuesday, Los Angeles (10-6-0) bounced back two nights later with a 2-1 win over the New York Islanders. Drew Doughty scored on the power play, the Kings killed all three penalties and backup Jhonas Enroth stopped 31 shots to improve to 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average.

Los Angeles has killed 18 of 19 penalties in the last six games and been nearly as impressive with the extra skater, notching a power-play goal in five straight. The team hasn't scored with the man advantage in six consecutive contests since an eight-game run in April 2013.

Despite that success, the Kings have alternated wins and losses in their last six. With a stretch of 15 road contests in a 20-game stretch looming and Vancouver and the Coyotes each one point back, picking up two points against Edmonton (6-11-0) is imperative.

'We need to put a string of wins together early,' forward Milan Lucic said. 'We're in first place, but we want to have some separation there.'

The Kings haven't had much trouble picking up points against the Oilers, going 12-1-2 in the last 15 in the series and outscoring them 24-5 in winning six straight at Staples Center.

Jonathan Quick has been shaky lately, going 1-3-0 with a 2.80 GAA in four starts this month, but is 8-0-1 with a 1.53 GAA in his last nine starts versus Edmonton. He stopped 26 shots in a 3-2 win at Edmonton on Oct. 25, and has a 0.98 GAA in winning his last five home starts in the series.

In the last matchup in Los Angeles on April 2, Marian Gaborik and Jeff Carter had two goals apiece in an 8-2 win.

Carter, who has seven goals and seven assists in his last 11 games, has also been instrumental to the Kings' dominance in this series. He scored in Edmonton last month and has recorded at least one point in 13 of his last 14 games against the Oilers, tallying 12 goals and six assists.

Like the Kings, the Oilers have also found success with the man advantage, converting 22.2 percent of their power plays for one of the league's best marks.

It's the other side of their special teams that has been their downfall, as they're killing 64.3 percent of penalties during a 3-7-0 stretch.

A night after a surprising 4-3 overtime win at Anaheim, Edmonton allowed four unanswered goals in Thursday's 4-1 loss at Arizona.

'I didn't think we were sharp. I didn't think we had the polish in our game that we've seen even when we didn't have success in the past,' coach Todd McLellan said. 'I know it's back-to-back, but we can't have that excuse.'

Leon Draisaitl was again in the middle of the offense Thursday, assisting on Taylor Hall's team-leading seventh goal for his 11th point in seven games since being called up from the AHL.

Hall scored against the Kings last month, just his second in his last 11 meetings.

NBA notebook: Hawks' Budenholzer facing family emergency
By The Sports Xchange

Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer will miss Friday night's road game against the Boston Celtics due to a family emergency.
The team announced that Budenholzer left the team early Friday to return to Atlanta after making the trip to Boston. The Hawks revealed no details about the situation and asked fans and media to "respect the private nature of the situation."
Budenholzer was the NBA Coach of the Year last season when Atlanta won a franchise-record 60 games. Lead assistant Kerry Atkinson will coach the Hawks against Boston.
Atlanta players were informed about the situation prior to the shootaround at Boston's TD Garden.
"My first thought is hoping everything is OK," center Al Horford told the Journal-Constitution. "I know he wouldn't leave us unless something was wrong. We hope he's OK and we are feeling for Coach but we understand. If it was one of the players who was going through something, he would understand too. It shows that in life there is more than basketball."

---Forward Hedo Turkoglu, who played 15 seasons in the NBA and eight with the Orlando Magic, announced his retirement.
Turkoglu will be honored and recognized by the Magic during a special ceremony on Friday, Dec. 18, when Orlando hosts Portland.
"I am very thankful and grateful for the opportunity to live out my dream and play in the NBA," Turkoglu said Friday in a statement. "I will always remember my teammates, coaches, staff members and all of the fans who made my career so wonderful for myself and my family."
The 6-foot-10 Turkoglu appeared in 997 regular-season games (571 starts) during his NBA career with Sacramento, San Antonio, Orlando, Toronto, Phoenix and the Los Angeles Clippers, averaging 11.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 26.8 minutes per game. He also appeared in 109 career playoff contests, averaging 9.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 27.4 minutes per game.

---The Toronto Raptors assigned forward Bruno Caboclo and center Lucas Nogueira to Raptors 905 of the NBA Development League.
Both players are expected to be in uniform Saturday night for the first game in Raptors 905 history when the team visits the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Caboclo made his NBA season debut Wednesday at Philadelphia, going scoreless in one minute. He appeared in eight games with the Raptors last season, totaling 10 points, two rebounds and 23 minutes.
Nogueira has appeared in two games this season with the Raptors, recording three points, one block and one steal in five minutes. In six games with Toronto last season, he totaled six points, 11 rebounds and 23 minutes.

---The Sacramento Kings assigned forward Duje Dukan to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA D-League.
The 6-9 Dukan has not seen action in the nine regular-season games with the Kings. The undrafted rookie from Wisconsin totaled three points, one rebound and nine minutes in one appearance off the bench in the preseason for the Kings.

---The Cleveland Cavaliers assigned guard Joe Harris to the Canton Charge of the NBA D-League.
Harris has played in four games for the Cavs this season, averaging 3.5 minutes.

Preview: Pistons (5-3) at Clippers (5-4)

Date: November 14, 2015 3:30 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Clippers are at an extreme disadvantage playing without their starting guards, and Chris Paul and J.J. Redick could be sidelined again Saturday night against the visiting Detroit Pistons.

Los Angeles (5-4) has dropped four of five, and Paul missed two of those losses due to a strained groin originally suffered late in a Nov. 4 loss at Golden State. He's listed as doubtful for this contest after missing Thursday's 118-104 defeat at Phoenix.

Redick, averaging 14.8 points and shooting 52.6 percent from the field, sat out that game due to back spasms and isn't expected to play Saturday.

The Clippers resorted to a starting backcourt of Austin Rivers and Pablo Prigioni, who shot 6 of 18 for 17 points. They were outplayed thoroughly by starting Suns guards Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight, who combined for 63 points on 23-of-35 shooting.

Blake Griffin had a season-low 11 points, getting ejected after his second technical foul late in the first half. Reserves Jamal Crawford and Wesley Johnson led Los Angeles with 18 and 14 points, respectively.

"There are no excuses there," said Austin Rivers, who is 8 for 24 with three assists in his two starts in place of Paul. "We need them (Paul, Redick and Griffin). That is obvious, but we are a deep enough team where we can win without them. We had bad spirit tonight."

The Clippers' 1-4 stretch includes three straight road losses, though they're 4-1 at home while allowing 98.8 points per game compared to 113.0 on the road.

Detroit (5-3) has also slipped after a strong start, losing two in a row ahead of this fifth stop on its season-high six-game trip.

The Pistons shot 38.2 percent - already the fourth time they've been at 38.5 or worse - in Wednesday's 101-92 loss at Sacramento. The inefficient offense combined with poorer defense has been a recipe for bad results. Detroit has let its last three opponents all surpass 100 points and shoot a combined 50.2 percent, compared to 43.0 percent previously as none reached 95 points.

Coach Stan Van Gundy's club was also hurt Wednesday by another slow start, giving up 36 first-quarter points. Detroit's average first-half scoring margin of minus-5.4 is one of the league's worst.

"(The energy) wasn't what it needed to be," guard Reggie Jackson said of the Pistons' start. "We didn't come out ready to compete. We didn't come out ready to play. Got to play harder."

Jackson went 2 for 12 from 3-point range in the back-to-back losses after starting the season 10 of 22.

Andre Drummond had 14 points and 17 rebounds and has grabbed at least 15 in all but one game to average 19.3. No one has averaged that many since Wilt Chamberlain, Nate Thurmond and Bill Russell in 1968-69. He has a double-double in each of his last four meetings with Los Angeles.

The Clippers are seeking their ninth straight win in the series and have averaged 114.0 points on 54.7 percent shooting in the last five.

Preview: Magic (5-5) at Wizards (3-4)

Date: November 14, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

A few days off has probably cooled Randy Wittman down some, but whether anything changes with his team's defense remains uncertain.

Washington's next chance to clean up the root of their coach's distress comes Saturday night against the visiting Orlando Magic, who the Wizards have had no trouble shutting down lately.

Tuesday's 125-101 home loss to Oklahoma City was Washington's third straight defeat, offering up little in the way of defensive resistance each time, and Wittman had a point to make in his postgame news conference after his team dropped to 3-4.

"We don't defend. Guys drive by us at will. We don't have any toughness. We don't hit anybody and rebound the ball. We've got guys that play 27 minutes and get one defensive rebound," Wittman said. "I can get a rebound, I guarantee you. If you give me 27 minutes on a Saturday, I'll get you a rebound. And that's what it boils down to - 50-50 balls; the dirty stuff.

"We don't get dirty. And that's on me. We've got three days to find the guys that'll play that way."

Since their season-opening win, the Wizards have given up an average of 114.3 points per game, so defense was the main topic in this week's practices. The players are about as disgusted.

"You score 100 points in this league, you think you can win those games," John Wall said. "But if you're giving up almost 130, you have no chance."

During the losing streak, the Wizards - whose foundation for success during playoff runs the last two seasons was their defense - are giving up 119.0 points per game.

"If we're not communicating and talking out there, there's going to be breakdowns, and that's when we're giving teams uncontested layups," Wall said. "We're just giving guys easy freedom to run and flow anything they want to on offense."

The Thunder scored 37 points in the first quarter and 68 in the first half. They made 51.2 percent of their field-goal attempts, including 65.2 percent on 3-pointers (15 of 23). They outrebounded the Wizards 53-41, including 43-29 at the defensive end.

"We're just too soft of a team right now. I might as well stick four guards and a center out there and play, because we're getting beat on the boards with my supposed big men out there," Wittman said. "We let teams take it to us the last three games."

None of his starters had more than five rebounds Tuesday, when shooting guard Bradley Beal sat out with a sore left shoulder and backup forward Nene was sidelined by a bad back. Only one of Oklahoma City's starters had fewer than six rebounds.

Washington center Marcin Gortat was the one whose specific stats Wittman mocked: 27 minutes, one defensive rebound.

"It's definitely my fault. I've got to take the blame," Gortat said. "It's my part of the game, where I have to rebound and take that challenge. I've got no explanation. I just wasn't in a good position."

Washington has won the last nine meetings with the Magic while limiting them to 91.1 points per game.

The Magic (5-5) are seeking a third straight win after Friday's 102-93 home victory over Utah. They've won four of five while limiting opponents to 94.6 points and 42.3 percent from the field. Orlando jumped out to a 33-15 lead after the first quarter, then allowed the Jazz to make things interesting.

"It shouldn't be that hard to sustain how we started," said Evan Fournier, who scored a game-high 21. "We have to play the same way for 48 minutes."

Victor Oladipo sat out with a concussion sustained Wednesday.

Preview: Mavericks (5-4) at Rockets (4-5)

Date: November 14, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

James Harden and the Houston Rockets had little trouble eliminating the Dallas Mavericks from the playoffs last season.

The Mavericks are looking for Zaza Pachulia to make a difference in the first meeting since then, while the Rockets seek a sixth straight home win in the series Saturday night.

Houston (4-4) ousted Dallas (5-4) in five games in the opening round of the postseason before eventually falling to Golden State in the Western Conference Finals.

Harden averaged 28.4 points in the series with the Mavs and Dwight Howard had 16.6 and 13.8 rebounds per game.

The duo is off to a terrific start to 2015-16 with Harden second in the NBA at 28.8 points per game, while Howard is putting up 16.7 and pulling down 12.7 boards.

Their efforts, however, weren't enough in Friday's 107-98 loss at Denver. Harden led the way with 28 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, and Howard chipped in with 12 points and 10 boards.

"Just small things we can correct. They are major problems, but not major things that are out of our hands," Harden said.

One area of concern is Houston's 16.3 turnovers per game, which ranks among the most in the NBA. The Rockets had 20 on Friday, committing at least that many for the third time in five games.

Houston, though, has overcome an average of 16.5 turnovers while winning eight of its last 10 meetings with the Mavericks. However, that's been helped greatly by the Rockets' 109.0 points per game in that span.

Dallas is planning to make things tougher in the paint with Pachulia. The center became the Mavs' key offseason acquisition after the club was spurned by DeAndre Jordan, who opted to return to the Los Angeles Clippers despite agreeing to terms with Dallas.

Instead of making the free-agency splash, the Mavs traded a second-round pick to Milwaukee for Pachulia in a move that seems to have been a bargain with Pachulia averaging 10.8 points and 10.2 rebounds after posting 8.3 and 6.8 marks with the Bucks last season.

"He's been just tremendous," coach Rick Carlisle said.

Pachulia led the Mavs with season highs of 18 points and 16 boards in a 90-82 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. That came two days after he had 10 and 10 while matched up with Jordan in a 118-108 victory over the Clippers.

"My numbers don't count; they don't matter without the win," Pachulia said Friday. "Thank you to my teammates for finding me. Thank you to my teammates for missing some good shots offensively so that I could get some offensive rebounds."

Dirk Nowitzki was one of those teammates who missed a bit, going 4 of 13 from the floor to finish with nine points in his worst offensive showing of the season. The forward is averaging a team-leading 17.8 points with 7.2 boards.

Nowitzki averaged 21.2 points against Houston in the playoffs last spring, but he struggled to show consistency with 16 and 10 in two of the games. He had 22 points and 15 rebounds in Game 5 while making just 8 of 23 from the floor.

Preview: Cavaliers (8-1) at Bucks (4-5)

Date: November 14, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

While the Milwaukee Bucks figure to have their point guard back, the Cleveland Cavaliers are still a ways off from having theirs, but the wins keep coming with a replacement filling in admirably.

Michael Carter-Williams is expected to return from a five-game absence Saturday night as the Cavaliers visit Milwaukee with a shot at matching their best 10-game start ever.

Cleveland (8-1) remains without Kyrie Irving as the guard recovers from a broken knee cap, but the absence hasn't shown up in its record since losing the opener in Chicago. The Cavs have since won eight straight and can start 9-1 for the first time since 1976-77.

In Friday's 90-84 win in New York, LeBron James scored 31 points and Mo Williams made a tiebreaking jumper with 41 seconds left to finish with 20.

Kevin Love continued struggling with his shot, going 2 for 10 and dropping to 35.6 percent in his last five. James, though, is averaging 30.5 in the last four games, while Williams is scoring 19.7 and shooting 55.1 percent in his last six. The former Milwaukee guard is making the absence of Irving easier to handle, though it was more of a defensive effort that led to the win.

Cleveland held the Knicks to 12 points in the fourth quarter and 31 in the second half with New York shooting 36.7 percent for the game.

"Some games you've got to win without your fastball, and this was one of those games and a big part of that was what we did on the defensive end," coach David Blatt said.

The Cavs won three of four against Milwaukee last season, though the Bucks won't have to deal with Irving, who scored 25.0 points per game in the series. That's not making Milwaukee coach Jason Kidd approach this much differently.

"You're talking about one of the best teams in the league, not just the East, and they have the best player in the world in LeBron," Kidd said. "... For us, we have our work cut out. They cause a lot of problems. They're big. They're veterans, and they know how to play, so we're going to have to play one of our best games if we want any chance."

Milwaukee (4-5) has dropped consecutive games, and Wednesday's 103-102 defeat in Denver came despite shooting a season-best 53.2 percent. Jerryd Bayless came off the bench for 22 points and is averaging 17.7 while shooting 53.1 percent and 61.5 from 3-point range in the last three games.

Aside from that, though, the Bucks haven't been pleased with their bench play. Their reserves are shooting 39.8 percent for the season and are being outscored by opponent benches 39.9-30.1.

"Speaking for the bench, we haven't been good these last few games, me included," forward John Henson said. "... The bench has got to do a better job at least just keeping it even until the guys can get some rest."

That might not be as vital with a few starters returning.

Jabari Parker was rested on the second night of a back-to-back as he continues his return from a left ACL injury suffered 11 months ago. Carter-Williams is said to be probable after sitting with a left ankle sprain.

Carter-Williams scored 30 points in the latest meeting - a 104-99 Cleveland win on April 8. Parker's only game against the Cavs was one of his best, scoring 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting in a 111-108 loss in Cleveland on Dec. 2.

Preview: 76ers (0-9) at Spurs (6-2)

Date: November 14, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

He may not be the most well known or have earned the most accolades of any Spurs player, but Kawhi Leonard has been San Antonio's brightest star so far this season.

Now the Spurs might have to play without him Saturday night when they go after their 28th win in 29 home meetings with the Philadelphia 76ers, the NBA's lone winless club.

On a San Antonio roster that already has Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and now LaMarcus Aldridge, Leonard appears to be taking a huge step forward in 2015-16.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year has team highs with 15 steals and 10 blocks while limiting players he's defended to 3-of-18 shooting from 3-point range. After averaging a career-high 16.5 points last season, Leonard is scoring 21.9 per game and shooting 52.6 percent after he had 20 points in Wednesday's 113-101 win at Portland.

Leonard, though, is questionable Saturday due to a respiratory infection, while Manu Ginobili is also day to day with adductor tightness. If they can't go, San Antonio would likely turn to a combination of Danny Green, Patty Mills and Kyle Anderson to fill in.

Aldridge, who spent his first nine seasons in Portland, had 23 points in his first game back since signing with the Spurs in July. He joined Duncan and David Robinson as the Spurs' only players with 120-plus points and 70-plus rebounds in the first eight games.

"It was emotional. I have nothing but love for this city. I have so many memories in this arena so it was hard for me out there," the four-time All-Star said.

San Antonio (6-2) has been outstanding on offense during its three-game winning streak, averaging 111.0 points while shooting 54.8 percent. It should be able to continue that production in the opener of a three-game homestand against the 76ers.

Philadelphia (0-9) has given up 109.0 points and a 45.7 field-goal percentage in its last five. The club also has struggled with a league-low 92.0 points per game and shot just 34.9 percent and committed 18 turnovers in Friday's 102-85 loss at Oklahoma City.

Jahlil Okafor has been a bright spot with a team-high 19.0 points per game, but the rookie center will try to get back on track after scoring a season-low six on 3-of-18 shooting. Undrafted rookie Christian Wood finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

"More nights than not, we're not going to go away," said coach Brett Brown, an assistant under Spurs coach Gregg Popovich from 2002-13.

Brown's club dropped its first 17 games of 2014-15 and has now lost 19 in a row dating to last season, matching the third-longest slide in franchise history.

The Spurs have won eight straight in the series and 11 in a row at AT&T Center. They've won by an average of 15.8 points since their last loss to the 76ers there in 2004.

"For us, it's the same every game," San Antonio guard and Philadelphia native Rasual Butler said. "We're trying to execute our game plan at both ends of the floor. Those guys are pros for a reason and we're going to come out and play with the same effort."

Leonard had 26 points and 10 boards in a 109-103 road win Dec. 1 in the most recent meeting.

Preview: Nuggets (5-4) at Suns (4-4)

Date: November 14, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Phoenix's backcourt of Brandon Knight and Eric Bledsoe continues to provide the bulk of the scoring for the run-and-gun Suns.

Their frontcourt might be a little thin Saturday night, though.

Markieff Morris' status is up in the air as Phoenix looks to prevent the visiting Denver Nuggets from winning a fourth straight game.

Bledsoe is shooting 47.4 percent while averaging a team-high 22.4 points after finishing with 26 in Thursday's 118-104 win over the Los Angeles Clippers. He's hit 19 of 28 from the field - including 4 of 7 from 3-point range - over his last two and has scored at least 20 in three straight.

Knight hadn't been shooting as well heading into that contest, but he hit six 3s and finished 14 of 22 from the floor while scoring a career-high 37 points. He shot just 36.2 percent over his previous four.

"I wasn't worried about (the shooting slump)," Knight said. "I knew I was going to start making shots at some point because I work on it every day. For me, it's just about getting back into a rhythm.

'Whenever you have a night like that, you're happy, but as long as we win, that's what counts. That's the biggest factor. You could have 37, 35, but if you don't win, it doesn't matter.'

Phoenix (4-4) snapped a two-game skid, but it lost Morris in the process. He left in the first quarter with a sprained left knee and didn't return, and he's questionable to play in this contest.

His absence could pose a problem on the defensive end with the Nuggets' frontcourt playing so well. Kenneth Faried is averaging 16.7 points over his last three and Danilo Gallinari is scoring a team-high 18.9.

Gallinari followed up his 25-point effort in Wednesday's win over Milwaukee with a season-high 27 while hitting 7 of 9 from the field and all 10 of his free throws in Friday's 107-98 victory over Houston.

He added three 3-pointers for the Nuggets (5-4), who swept a three-game homestand before embarking on a three-game trip.

'It was big to get three in a row,' Gallinari said. 'We were looking at this week saying we needed to get these three at home and we did.'

Will Barton had another big game off the bench, finishing with a career-high 26 points. He averaged 5.0 points over his first three seasons but is up to 13.8 this year after hitting 8 of 14 from the field and 4 of 5 from long range against the Rockets.

'Just got into a rhythm and playing off my teammates,' Barton said. 'Good drives by Randy (Foye), Jameer (Nelson) and Emmanuel (Mudiay), and being my active, usual self. Getting up and down the floor, created problems in transition and my shot was falling, especially from 3.'

Barton had 22 points and Gallinari finished with 20 in the last meeting with the Suns on Feb. 25, but Knight's 19 points and Bledsoe's 18 helped Phoenix win 110-96, its sixth victory in the last seven matchups.

Denver will get some help defensively against the Suns' backcourt from Nelson, who scored 13 points Friday after missing the previous two with a back injury.

Mudiay struggled again, though. The rookie finished with 11 assists, but he was 1 of 10 from the field and committed nine turnovers, the most he's had since finishing with 11 in the season opener.

Preview: Nets (1-8) at Warriors (10-0)

Date: November 14, 2015 10:30 PM EDT

(AP) - Stephen Curry hardly keeps track of how many 3-pointers he's putting up on a given night. His mindset is: See a chance and let it fly.

So, how about if he's on a record pace for 3s by season's end?

'I always believe 3 is better than 2,' Curry said with a smile after a recent game. 'If I can knock `em down, I'm sure that will help our team kind of open up games and it's kind of deflating for a defense. I know it is for us when a guy gets hot on the other side.'

The reigning NBA MVP has had a hot hand so far this season while playing for the league's most dominant team. The defending champions appear to be even better than they were during their 67-win title run as they try to stay unbeaten Saturday night against the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

Curry is determined to show the rest of the league he's a far more polished player, capable of spectacular performances and leading the new-and-improved Warriors during another special season.

'I'm always confident. I'm not really surprised when I do something crazy,' Curry said. 'That's how I practice is the way I play out there, and trying to let that show.'

Curry's sensational start has his name mentioned in the same breath as Michael Jordan, and interim Warriors coach Luke Walton projects he'll be the best shooter of all time. That is, if he isn't already there.

'I think he's setting the new standard as a shooter in this league,' Walton said.

The 27-year-old has hit 52 of 110 from long range through 10 games in his seventh NBA season, putting him on pace for 426. That would shatter his record set last season of 286 on 646 attempts.

The Warriors won 129-116 at Minnesota on Thursday night for the best start in franchise history, becoming the fourth team to begin a season at least 10-0 immediately after capturing a championship.

Curry led the way with 46 points and hit 8 of 13 from 3-point range, giving him 24 more 3-pointers than any player ever through the first 10 games of the season. With 333 points, he's scored the most in that span of any player since Jordan's 338 to begin the 1992-93 season.

The two-time All-Star has averaged 24.5 points while sinking 21 of 46 (45.7 percent) from beyond the arc over his last six meetings with the Nets. He hit six 3s in the most recent matchup March 2 when Brooklyn earned a split of the season series with a 110-108 home win.

Curry had scored 18 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, including a tying bucket, as the Warriors rallied back from a 10-point deficit with under four minutes remaining. Jarrett Jack, however, made the winning jumper with 1.1 seconds left for Brooklyn.

Jack also finished with 23 points while making all 10 of his field-goal attempts in a 107-99 loss at Golden State on Nov. 13, 2014. He had 21 points and 12 assists in Friday's 111-109 loss at Sacramento in the third stop on this four-game western trip.

'I thought it was a game we had control for the most majority,' Jack said. 'But we weren't able to stop the run they made in the second half.'

Brook Lopez added 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Thaddeus Young had 16 and nine as the Nets dropped to 1-8.

Golden State's Draymond Green, who had 23 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds Thursday, has totaled 35 points and 18 boards in his last two home meetings with Brooklyn.
