KEY STAT: Liverpool have won just two of their last nine FA Cup ties at the first attempt

EXPERT VERDICT: With Liverpool’s Sadio Mane still at the Africa Cup of Nations and Philippe Coutinho short of full match fitness, goals could be at a premium for the clash with Wolves. Anfield could be quiet after the loss to Southampton in the League Cup and Wolves will endeavour to make it as difficult as possible for the Reds.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw

KEY STAT: Arsenal have kept one clean sheet in their last 14 FA Cup away ties

EXPERT VERDICT: Southampton have already reached Wembley via the League Cup but they may fall short in their bid for a cup double this season. Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal have scored more than once in ten of their last 14 matches in all competitions and have the squad to be able to fight on multiple fronts.

RECOMMENDATION: Arsenal to win 2-1

KEY STAT: Deportivo have drawn each of their last five matches

EXPERT VERDICT: Real Madrid are the only team to have beaten Deportivo in their last nine matches and while they have drawn their last five games, the side from La Coruna have shown great resilience to come from behind in four of those. Eibar have won one of their last six and this could be the game where Deportivo finally get over the line.

KEY STAT: Monchengladbach have collected only two points from eight away games

EXPERT VERDICT: Bayer Leverkusen advertised their top-four credentials with a comfortable 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin last weekend and they look a good bet to climb further up the Bundesliga against Monchengladbach. Gladbach won August's reverse fixture 2-1 but the Foals were thumped 5-0 on their last visit to the BayArena and have yet to record a win on their travels in the Bundesliga this term.

KEY STAT: PSV have scored only one goal in their last four away matches

EXPERT VERDICT: PSV's dodgy away form is seriously hurting their chances of retaining the Eredivisie title and they cannot be trusted to win against Heracles in Almelo at very short odds. They have drawn their last three league road games, including trips to Willem II and rock-bottom Roda, and are struggling to find the back of the net when away from Eindhoven.

KEY STAT: Ten of Inter's 12 goals in their six-match winning run have come in the second half

EXPERT VERDICT: Inter have won their last six Serie A outings so are understandably a short price to enter seventh heaven against rock-bottom Pescara. The Nerazzurri have been either level or behind at the break in five of those victories before exerting their dominance in the second half and backing a similar outcome at the San Siro looks the value bet.

RECOMMENDATION: Draw-Inter double result

NBA roundup: Harden's 51 points carries Rockets
By The Sports Xchange

PHILADELPHIA -- James Harden had 51 points, 13 assists and 13 rebounds as the Houston Rockets beat the Philadelphia 76ers 123-118 on Friday night.
It was the 14th triple-double of the season for Harden, and the 18th time he has accumulated over 30 points and 10 assists. The latter is the highest single-season total since such numbers were first tracked in 1983-84, according to basketball-reference.com.
His point total was two off his season and career high of 53, against the New York Knicks on Dec. 31.
Nene added a season-high 21 points for the Rockets, who snapped a two-game losing streak.
Philadelphia rookie center Joel Embiid, back after missing the three previous games with a bruised left knee, topped the Sixers with 32 points, one shy of his career high.

Pacers 115, Kings 111
INDIANAPOLIS -- Paul George scored six of his 33 points in overtime, and Indiana rallied to defeat Sacramento in Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
George's basket with 31.8 seconds remaining broke a 111-111 tie, and after Garrett Temple and Darren Collison each missed potential game-tying shots with 7.1 and 2.0 seconds remaining, Jeff Teague made two game-clinching free throws with 0.4 seconds to play.
Indiana improved to 3-18 when trailing after three quarters and 2-7 in the second game of a back to back.
CJ Miles added 18 for the Pacers, Jeff Teague had 17 points and eight assists and Myles Turner scored 14. Indiana shot 48.7 percent (38 of 78).

Pelicans 119, Spurs 103
NEW ORLEANS -- Jrue Holiday scored a team-high 23 points and had 11 assists and Anthony Davis scored 16 points and grabbed 22 rebounds to power New Orleans to a victory over San Antonio in the Smoothie King Center.
The victory for the Pelicans snapped the Spurs' five-game winning streak, and it also ended San Antonio's streak of five consecutive victories over the Pelicans. The 119 points were the most allowed by the Spurs this season.
The Spurs were paced by Kawhi Leonard with 23 points, but no other Spur scored more than 14 points as San Antonio shot 38.8 percent

Knicks 110, Hornets 107
NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis scored 18 points apiece to lead New York to a win over Charlotte at Madison Square Garden.
Courtney Lee added 16 points for the Knicks, including crucial points in the fourth quarter. Brandon Jennings scored 15 points off the New York bench.
Kemba Walker, who was named as a reserve to the Eastern Conference All-Star team on Thursday, poured in 31 points for the Hornets (23-24).
Knicks guard Derrick Rose left the game with a sprained left ankle midway through the third quarter and didn't return. The Knicks tweeted that x-ray were negative. Rose finished with 13 points and four assists.

Raptors 102, Bucks 86
TORONTO -- Kyle Lowry scored 32 points and added six assists as Toronto ended a season-high five-game losing streak with a victory over Milwaukee.
The Raptors, who led by as many as 19 points, took a seven-point advantage into the fourth quarter. They opened a 15-point lead early in the fourth and still led by that margin with three minutes to play.
Norman Powell added 19 points for the Raptors, who were without DeMar DeRozan (sprained right ankle). Patrick Patterson added 10 points while Jonas Valanciunas scored eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Cavaliers 124, Nets 116
CLEVELAND -- LeBron James scored 31 points and passed for 11 assists, Kyrie Irving scored 28 points and Cleveland beat lowly Brooklyn, just its third win in its last nine games.
The final was closer than it should have been because the Nets scored 43 points in the fourth quarter, continuing a trend they have set all season. It's the third time this season they have scored at least 40 points against the Cavs in the fourth quarter -- but they lost all three games.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Nets and the 15th in their last 16 games. Perhaps sensing the impending doom, coach Kenny Atkinson rested Brook Lopez and Caris LeVert after already being without Trevor Booker (illness), Joe Harris (sprained ankle) and Jeremy Lin (hamstring).

Celtics 128, Magic 98
BOSTON -- Isaiah Thomas scored 21 to notch his 30th consecutive 20-point contest as Boston blew out Orlando at TD Garden.
Thomas is 10 games shy of the Celtics' franchise mark, set by John Havlicek. Jae Crowder added 19 points and rookie Jaylen Brown scored a career-high 20 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Kelly Olynyk added 16 points off the bench for the Celtics.

Heat 100, Bulls 88
CHICAGO -- Goran Dragic scored 26 points and had 11 assists, and Miami cruised to a win over Chicago.
Heat center Willie Reed scored 20 points in place of injured teammate Hassan Whiteside. Guard Dion Waiters added 19 points as Miami won its sixth game in a row. Former Heat guard Dwyane Wade led the Bulls with 15 points. Forwards Taj Gibson and Paul Zipser added 14 points apiece for Chicago, which lost its second straight game at home.
The game capped a drama-filled day for the Bulls, who met with coach Fred Hoiberg and general manager Gar Forman for about 40 minutes before the team's morning shootaround. Wade and forward Jimmy Butler each came off the bench as discipline for criticizing teammates two nights earlier. Their remarks prompted guard Rajon Rondo to fire back on social media with comments that indirectly called out Wade and Butler.

Wizards 112, Hawks 86
ATLANTA -- Otto Porter Jr. bounced back from a poor offensive night to score 21 points and grab 11 rebounds and sparked Washington to a win over Atlanta and pulled to within one-half game of fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
It was the largest margin of victory of the season for the Wizards, eclipsing their 25-point win at Boston on Nov. 9. Washington has won three straight, 10 of its last 12 games and is within one-half game of the fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
The Wizards never trailed and shot 48.8 percent from the field. They have won two of the three meetings against the Hawks and broke a two-game losing streak at Philips Arena.

Trail Blazers 112, Grizzlies 109
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Damian Lillard scored 15 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter to lift Portland to a victory over Memphis at Moda Center.
Lillard led five Trail Blazers who scored in double figures, including Allen Crabbe, who came off the bench for 23 points. CJ McCollum had 18 points, Mason Plumlee 13 and Al-Farouq Aminu 12 for Portland, which won their third straight game.
Marc Gasol scored 33 points and had eight rebounds and five assists to lead Memphis (27-21). Zach Randolph had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Mike Conley contributed 17 points and 10 assists for the Grizzlies, who are 5-7 in January.

NBA teams are cashing at an alarming rate to close out road trips
By JOE FORTENBAUGH

Your brow is drenched in tiny beads of sweat yet, no matter the amount of effort put forth, you can’t seem to shake the chills that are sprinting up and down your spine. You press the call button and ask the flight attendant for a blanket, and perhaps some ginger ale, in an effort to settle an unruly stomach. Dehydration has set in. Your pockets are light, your mental state is one of utter fragility, your emotions range from a state of disarray to discombobulated and back again. You mutter to yourself, “All I need to do is survive this flight and then I’m off to bed for 48 hours.”

You ease back into your seat ever so delicately and hope, pray even, for the best.

It doesn’t take a world traveler to comprehend that what I’m talking about is that infamous flight home from the great city of Las Vegas, because we’ve all been there before. Sin City is the ultimate road trip, one that is specifically designed to break you at the tables and slots and sportsbooks. And should you somehow manage to survive from a financial perspective, the city will no doubt emerge victorious when it comes to exacting a toll on your mental and physical health.

That’s preciously why I made the pledge more than five years ago to never spend more than three consecutive days on the Las Vegas Strip. Not because I don’t enjoy it. Oh, God, do I enjoy it! It’s because I simply lack the discipline necessary to survive anything greater than a 72-hour run through the Entertainment Capital of the World. I forget to sleep, forget to hydrate, forget to eat. And during that 72-hour stretch, I really don’t even care about rest or water or food.

It’s that damn flight home where I suffer the consequences and commence discussions with a Higher Power.

This, of course, is the most dramatic example of what can happen on a road trip. But we’ve all experienced the natural wear and tear that comes from a four, five or even week-long trek to another part of the country or world for business. By the end, we just want to sleep in our own beds and watch the latest binge craze courtesy of Netflix - no matter how much fun we had. That’s because no matter what new and exciting pleasures the road has to offer, there’s just no substitute for the tranquility and peace that comes from the home.

Professional athletes are not immune to the distractions inherent on any road trip. Look no further than Staples Center during a Sunday matinee for proof. In most instances, the Lakers’ opponent enjoys itself a tad too much the night before in the City of Angles while rubbing elbows with some combination of actors, musicians and models and shows up flat for an early start time the next afternoon.

These are preciously the situations that we are looking to exploit.

There is a long-standing belief in the National Basketball Association that clubs generally fall flat on their respective faces during the last game of a lengthy road trip. Fatigue, long travel, late nights, uncomfortable hotel beds - you name it. Any combination of the aforementioned, and beyond, play a role in wearing down even the best in the business. Hell, LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers got smoked by 35 points at Golden State on January 16 in what was the final contest of a six-game road trip.

But I’m here to tell you that, at least as far as the 2016-2017 NBA campaign is concerned, something very intriguing has developed in regards to lengthy road trips. Specifically, what takes place from a betting perspective in the final game of said road trips.

Let’s take a look:

2016-2017 NBA SU & ATS Road Records In Final Game Of Road Trip

Final game of 3-game road trip: 19-19 SU, 24-14 ATS
Final game of 4-game road trip: 12-3 SU, 12-3 ATS
Final game of 5-game road trip: 10-10 SU, 12-8 ATS
Final game of 6-game road trip: 4-5 SU, 4-5 ATS
Final game of 7-game road trip: 0-1 SU, 0-1 ATS

All previous theories be damned! What the information above tells us is that NBA road teams are actually thriving in the final game of their road trips this season, not faltering. So much so, in fact, that you would be turning an insane profit (.800 winning percentage) had you only wagered in situations in which a road team was playing its final contest of a four-game road trip. In fact, you’d be turning a profit in every road game situation this season outside of the final game of a six or seven-game roadie.

If nothing else, the above intelligence is more than worthy of consideration for the remainder of the NBA season. And because I love ya, I’ve gone ahead and taken the liberty of listing below all of the final-road-game situations that are coming up in the immediate future.

Best of luck!

Preview: Kings (18-28) at Hornets (23-24)

Date: January 28, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

The Sacramento Kings lost a key player to a season-ending injury last week and a recent 2-10 stretch, which included five losses during a six-game homestand, dropped them to 10th place in the NBA's Western Conference.

But the Kings, who continue an eight-game road trip on Saturday evening in Charlotte against the Hornets, believe they're still in the playoff race.

"We've remained positive, we've remained together in this locker room and we're still believing," center DeMarcus Cousins told reporters after the Kings' unlikely 116-112 overtime win on Wednesday over LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Sacramento coach Dave Joerger said, "We're trying to build and be better on a nightly basis in some areas. Had we won or lost this game, this is three in a row that we've played very competitively."

Sacramento is often held up as one the NBA's most dysfunctional franchises.

Cousins, fifth in the league in scoring at 28 points per game and recently selected to his third straight All-Star Game, was himself the subject of an in-depth profile in ESPN The Magazine: "Is DeMarcus Cousins undoing Sacramento, or is Sacramento undoing Cousins?"

The Kings (18-28) lost 115-111 on Friday night at Indiana. It was the second straight overtime game for Sacramento heading into the second of back-to-back games. The Kings are 2-7 in such situations this season.

Cousins and point guard Darren Collison both scored 26 points in the loss.

When Kings forward Rudy Gay tore his Achilles tendon a little more than a week ago, Cousins insisted the team would continue to fight.

"We've still got 13, 14 other guys in this locker room," Cousins told the Sacramento Bee. "As long as we're able to fight, we're going to fight. That's one thing about this team -- we don't stop fighting.

"Rudy's a huge piece of this team -- it (stinks) that he's gone and he can't join us on the floor -- but it's just an opportunity for the next man. I think you're seeing that. Guys are stepping up, and we're going to keep fighting."

The Hornets (23-24) have lost three straight, including 110-107 on Friday night in New York to the Knicks. The loss dropped Charlotte below .500 for the first time this season.

Kemba Walker led all scorers with 31 points for Charlotte.

On Thursday, Walker was selected to his first NBA All-Star team. He is Charlotte's first All-Star in seven years.

Walker and Gerald Wallace are the franchise's only All-Stars since the team returned to the NBA as the Charlotte Bobcats in 2004.

"Since day one, actually, with (head coach Steve Clifford), he's told me that I can be an All-Star in this league and it's up to me," Walker said. "The work I put into my game, things like that. Looking at who I am today, (I) got my name called and he was right."

Walker is averaging 23 points per game this season to lead the Hornets.

"It's special," he said of the All-Star nod. "I've worked really hard to try and become a better player each year in this league. I know there's been a lot of doubt about me coming up in this league."

The Kings play in Philadelphia on Monday night and the Hornets start a three-game western swing in Portland on Tuesday.

Preview: Pistons (21-25) at Heat (17-30)

Date: January 28, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

MIAMI -- Can anything stop the Miami Heat?

The Heat (17-30), winners of six games in a row including a stunner over the Golden State Warriors, play host to the Detroit Pistons (21-25) on Saturday night at American Airlines Arena.

Miami's win streak is its longest since February 2014.

Detroit, if nothing else, will be the more rested team. The Pistons, winners of three of their past four games, haven't played since a home loss to the Sacramento Kings on Monday.

Meanwhile, Miami had to travel home from Chicago, where the Heat defeated the Bulls 100-88 on Friday night.

But who needs rest when you are as hot as the Heat?

In just two weeks, Miami has gone from perhaps the worst team in the league to the hottest club in the NBA. The streak started Jan. 13 with a win over a very good Houston Rockets team. The Dallas Mavericks, who were playing well at the time, were the next team to go down. Then it was the Milwaukee Bucks who succumbed to the Heat.

The Heat streak became surreal when Dion Waiters' last-second shot beat the Warriors, owners of the best record in the league.

Miami hit the road on Wednesday and came away with another improbable win, falling behind by 15 points entering the fourth quarter before beating the Brooklyn Nets.

After a career-high 33 points against Milwaukee and 33 points and the game-winner vs. the Warriors, Waiters scored 24 and hit the game's biggest shot against Brooklyn. His last-minute 3-pointer sunk the Nets just as that shot downed Golden State.

This incredible run has Miami thinking playoffs, which would have been crazy talk two weeks ago.

"We are all doing it together," Heat backup center Willie Reed said after Friday's game in a televised interview on Sunshine Sports. "It doesn't want matter who gets the shine."

The Pistons probably won't recognize the Heat. They beat Miami just before the Heat got scorching hot, winning 107-98 on New Year's Day.

"They're playing really well and really hard," Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy told The Detroit Free Press. "(Point guard Goran) Dragic is playing at a really high level. Waiters was incredible in the Golden State game. Their best players are playing well, and that's a great formula."

For the first time since 2004, the Heat have no All-Stars. Miami center Hassan Whiteside and Dragic were snubbed.

Whiteside, who missed Friday's game due to a sprained right ankle, is averaging 16.9 points, 13.9 rebounds and 2.0 blocks.

The Pistons also had no All-Stars. Center Andre Drummond, who was an All-Star last year, was snubbed despite averaging 14.2 points, 13.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks.

Van Gundy is upset that there are no centers on the East roster as Atlanta's Dwight Howard was also left off.

"I'm against it," Van Gundy told The Detroit Free Press when asked about how centers have been devalued. "There used to be on the ballot two guards, two forwards and a center.

"The set-up now is wrong. There should be at least one true center."

Pistons guard Reggie Jackson is averaging 15.9 points and 5.6 assists but has only played 25 games due to a knee injury.

The Heat signed 6-8 undrafted rookie forward Okaro White to a second 10-day contract. He played college ball at Florida State.

Preview: Celtics (28-18) at Bucks (21-25)

Date: January 28, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

MILWAUKEE -- Al Horford is expected to be back in the lineup Saturday when the Boston Celtics travel to Milwaukee to take on the Bucks at the Bradley Center.

Horford, who strained his groin Wednesday night against Houston, sat out Friday in the Celtics 128-98 rout of Orlando at the TD Garden but is listed as probable against the Bucks.

"He was really sore Wednesday, less sore (Thursday)," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said before the Celtics' 128-98 victory. "There's no need for additional testing. He's pretty close to being ready to play. And we're not going to play him if it wasn't close."

"(He) went through a workout (Friday) morning, actually felt pretty good but not quite 100 percent."

Boston will still be without guard Avery Bradley, who is dealing with a sore right Achilles tendon and won't travel with the team.

But without those two, the Celtics have been on a bit of a roll. They've won two in a row since a three-game losing streak, closing to within 3 1/2 games of the Cavaliers atop the Eastern conference.

The play of Isiah Thomas has been big reason why. He scored a team-leading 21 against the Magic and has now passed the 20-point threshold in 30 straight games, 10 away from the franchise mark set by John Havlicek.

But he's been getting plenty of help, too. Jaylen Brown and Tyler Zeller have stepped up their games and finished with a combined 30 Friday night.

"That's a huge lift when you can get guys who don't always score at that rate to give you that kind of boost," Stevens said.

Things have not been going well lately for the Bucks, who have dropped seven of their last eight game to fall to five games under .500 for the first time this season.

Scoring hasn't been much of a problem for the Bucks during their swoon. They put up 127 in a Monday victory over Houston followed by 109 in a loss to Philadelphia Wednesday night before the Raptors held them to just 86 Friday night.

Milwaukee's problem has come of the defensive end. After leading the league in defensive shooting percentage, the Bucks have fallen to 15th (48.9 percent) and are 11th in points allowed, giving up 104.5 per game.

"We've been scoring a lot of points and not playing too much on the defensive end," Kidd said. "We've got to get stops if we're going to win. We started the first 20 games playing a high end on the defensive side of the ball, and here of late, we're just trying to outscore teams.

"We do have a lot of guys who can put the ball in the basket, but we have to pay more attention to the defensive side."

The Celtics have won four of the last five meetings with the Bucks. They took the season series 3-1 a year ago, and are 3-3 over the last three seasons when playing in Milwaukee.

Preview: Clippers (30-17) at Warriors (39-7)

Date: January 28, 2017 8:30 PM EDT

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Golden State Warriors fans will get a chance to greet Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green as 2017 Western Conference All-Stars when their team returns from a four-game trip to host the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday night.

While the Warriors were going 3-1 on the road over a six-day stretch, the NBA announced Curry and Durant as All-Star Game starters and Thompson and Green as reserves.

Sending four players to the midseason showcase is a first in Warriors' history. It had happened just seven times previously in the NBA.

The Warriors' Steve Kerr also earned an All-Star Game invitation in the past week due to his team having clinched the best record in the West at the All-Star break.

Kerr already has a plan for the Feb. 19 game in New Orleans.

"Those four will be (on the court) together for sure," Kerr told reporters Friday. "I can guarantee you that will happen at some point because that'll be a pretty cool thing."

The foursome played like All-Stars when the Warriors won 115-98 at Los Angeles in December.

Thompson led the scoring with 24 points; Curry had seven steals to go along with 19 points; Durant contributed eight rebounds and seven assists along with 16 points; and Green was the driving force on a defense that harassed Clippers star Blake Griffin into 5-for-20 shooting.

Griffin has played just five times since that Dec. 7 meeting, having missed 18 straight games following arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. He returned to play 29 minutes and record a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double in Tuesday's loss at Philadelphia.

But now it's sidekick Chris Paul who is out of action. He underwent surgery on his left thumb earlier this month and could be out until March.

Despite the return of Griffin and a seven-game winning streak earlier this month, the Clippers have lost nine of their last 17 games.

"It's so good having Blake back," Clippers center DeAndre Jordan told reporters after Tuesday's loss. "It's been so frustrating lately. We get off to a hot start, then we have two of our big guys go down.

"At our best, we're a championship contender. We just haven't been at our best in a while. But this is a good start to getting it right."

Jordan has been the club's big gun with his star teammates ailing. He has recorded nine double-doubles in the Clippers' last 14 games, having put up at least 20 points four times and at least 20 rebounds on six occasions.

He currently leads the NBA in rebounding (14.0 per game) and in field goal percentage (69.0), helping him earn a spot on the Western Conference All-Star team.

Interestingly, Jordan nearly became a Warrior in 2011 when he signed a four-year offer sheet as a restricted free agent. The Clippers, however, matched the offer to retain him.

The Warriors traded for Andrew Bogut eight months later, and have since moved on to Zaza Pachulia, who helped limit Jordan to 10 points and 12 rebounds in the earlier meeting this season.

Preview: Nets (9-37) at Timberwolves (17-29)

Date: January 28, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

MINNEAPOLIS -- The young Minnesota Timberwolves felt they were flat in a 109-103 home loss to the Indiana Pacers on Thursday, unable to build on the positive feelings they had from a road win at Phoenix in their previous game.

Hosting the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, Minnesota will see if it learned anything from Thursday's loss and starting slow.

"We looked flat," Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns said. "It started with me too, looked flat. It's too late to turn on the gas, five minutes left in the game. It makes it very hard to win a game. We almost pulled it off, but almost isn't good enough."

Minnesota won't want to be in the same situation against Brooklyn, but the Nets also don't offer the same firepower as Indiana.

Brooklyn owns the league's worst record (9-37) after losing its fourth-straight game, 124-116, at Cleveland on Friday. The Nets were playing without starters Brook Lopez, Trevor Booker and Jeremy Lin, as well as guards Joe Harris and Caris LeVert.

Lopez and LeVert sat out the game for rest and should play Saturday. Booker is dealing with an illness. Lin (strained left hamstring) and Harris (sprained left ankle) have missed multiple games.

"Without two big guys, Booker and Lopez, I think that we did a good job to fight through all 48 minutes," Bojan Bogdanovic said, according to the team's Twitter account. Bogdanovic led all Brooklyn starters with 17 points and Sean Kilpatrick had a team-high 18 points off the bench.

"For us to really come out today and play together, I think it was really fun," Kilpatrick said. "It was actually fun to play today. I think we played hard. That's something that as a teammates, that's something that you can deal with."

Without Lopez and Booker, the Nets started Justin Hamilton at center, Bogdanovic and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson at forward and guards Spencer Dinwiddie and Randy Foye, a former Timberwolves' first-round draft pick.

And Brooklyn was already facing a Cavaliers team that was looking to get over recent losses. The Nets made the final score closer, scoring 43 points in the fourth quarter, but lost for the 15th time in 16 games.

"Putting them on edge isn't the best thing in the world (for us)," Brooklyn coach Kenny Atkinson said. "But I think (Cleveland coach) Tyronn Lue said it best: they're a great team."

Minnesota (17-29) will also have their minds on avenging a recent loss. The Timberwolves are slowly progressing under coach Tom Thibodeau. They have won six of their last nine games, putting together a pair of three-game winning streaks.

Towns has scored at least 30 points in four of the nine games. He's also pulled down double-digit rebounds in all but one of the games. Andrew Wiggins has averaged 21.3 points per game in that span, and point guard Ricky Rubio has averaged 10.5 points and 12 assists per game.

"In the beginning, everybody is trying to do the right thing," Rubio told the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "But sometimes you've got to play with a little more freedom, and we finally clicked. Sometimes you need that, and we've been playing much better as a team."

Another loss likely stings Minnesota heading into Saturday. One of the Nets' nine wins this season was against the Timberwolves, 119-110, in Brooklyn on Nov. 8.

Preview: Nuggets (20-25) at Suns (15-31)

Date: January 28, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

Good news for the Denver Nuggets in the aftermath of their win Thursday night also proved to be good news for the Phoenix Suns on the eve of their rematch at Talking Stick Resort Arena on Saturday night.

Nuggets standout center Nikola Jokic suffered what appeared to be a serious hip injury in the final two minutes of Thursday's 127-120 victory. He'd already contributed 29 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists to the win.

However, x-rays taken after the game revealed nothing more than a bruise, and Jokic underwent an MRI on Friday that revealed a hip strain. He is expected to be fine after a game or two off.

That also was good news for the Suns, who won't have to deal with the second-year star in Saturday's back end of the home-and-home sequence.

"He's been playing out of this world for us -- our best player," Nuggets backup Will Barton insisted to reporters after Thursday's win. "It would be tough to see him go down for a long time. I'm just happy he's fine."

Jusuf Nurkic, who began the season as the Nuggets' first-string center, is expected to replace Jokic in the starting lineup.

Jokic won't be easy to replace. He is one of just five players -- along with Russell Westbrook, DeMarcus Cousins, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Davis -- to be averaging at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in January.

Denver, which has rallied into the No. 8 playoff position in the West, is 11-8 when Jokic starts at center. They are 9-17 when he doesn't.

Two of the latter nine wins came with Nurkic starting at center in November games against the Suns. The third-year big man contributed a total of eight points, 12 rebounds and six assists to those wins.

The Nuggets will be looking to sweep the four-game season series Saturday.

If the Suns are to turn things around, chances are they're going to need improvement in two major areas of concern from Thursday night -- rebounding and free-throw shooting.

Led by Jokic, the Nuggets enjoyed a 46-28 advantage on the boards. They also outscored Phoenix 30-14 on free throws.

As usual, guards Eric Bledsoe (28 points) and Devin Booker (24) paved the way offensively for the Suns in the loss. They combined to make 12 of their 15 free throws.

The remainder of the Phoenix roster went a combined 2-for-2 from the line.

"Rebounds, minus-18 for the game; minus-18 at the free throw line," Suns coach Earl Watson, a former Nuggets player, lamented to reporters after the game. "Those are numbers you can't overcome, but we still had a chance to win."

The Suns have lost two in a row after winning two straight, and they've dropped their last two at home. But they've proven dangerous at times of late, having swept the two-game season series from Toronto and beaten San Antonio in Mexico City in the past month.

Other than Denver wins, the clubs' first three meetings had something else in common -- high point totals.

The Nuggets scored 120 or more in all three games. The Suns averaged 113 in defeat.

Those numbers are consistent with the teams' season totals. Denver ranks 28th in the league (out of 30) in scoring defense at 111.1 points allowed per game. Phoenix is even worse -- 29th at 111.8.

Preview: Grizzlies (27-21) at Jazz (30-18)

Date: January 28, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

SALT LAKE CITY -- For the first time in six seasons, Utah has an NBA All-Star on the roster. It is the latest sign that the Jazz have taken another step in their basketball resurgence.

Gordon Hayward received his first NBA All-Star selection on Thursday. It is a fitting recognition for Hayward, who is enjoying his finest season yet.

The longtime Jazz forward is averaging a career-high 21.8 points and 5.7 rebounds. He leads Utah in scoring and free throw percentage (.875) and ranks second in assists per game (3.4).

For Hayward, it isn't just about what he has done. Utah's success this season has also been a determining factor in getting him recognition. The Jazz (30-18) are on pace for their first 50 win season since the 2009-10 season.

"We've been a lot more successful this year than in the past few years," Hayward said. "I've always said when a team is successful, the individual accolades come after that. We've been winning more games to be honest."

Rudy Gobert, who has also played a vital role in Utah's rise this season, did not earn an NBA All-Star selection alongside Hayward. Gobert was snubbed despite leading the league in total blocks (124), blocks per game (2.6) and points per shot (1.87). He also ranks second in field goal percentage (.661).

It could be enough to light a fire under Gobert and inspire him to prove to everyone else how much he deserved to be invited to play in New Orleans in February.

"Rudy finds motivation everywhere," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "If this is another piece to that puzzle, so be it. Whether Rudy is an all-star or not, he's going to keep working. There's a reason he's been considered."

Memphis (27-21) is experiencing a similar situation with NBA All-Star selections.

Marc Gasol was selected as a reserve on the Western Conference team. It is the third time that Gasol has been named an all-star in his career. He is averaging a career-high 20.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and a career-best 4.2 assists for the Grizzlies.

Mike Conley, on the other hand, ended up being a notable snub like Gobert. The Memphis point guard is averaging a career-high 18.6 points and 6.2 assists.

Gasol has done plenty to validate his selection this week. He scored a career-high 42 points in a 101-99 victory over Toronto on Wednesday. The veteran center has averaged 32.6 points in his last five games, including 33 points in a 112-109 loss to Portland on Friday.

"I've really just pushed him to get out of his comfort zone and look to get aggressive about scoring the ball," Grizzlies coach David Fizdale told reporters on Wednesday. "He is really embracing that role for us. It's not his nature."

Memphis and Utah will be meeting for the fourth and final time during the regular season on Saturday. The Grizzlies have won two of the previous three games, most recently beating the Jazz 88-79 on Jan. 8 behind 19 points and nine assists from Conley.

Saturday's Tip Sheet
By Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night – Clippers at Warriors – 8:30 PM EST – ABC

Los Angeles (30-17 SU, 23-24 ATS) continues a five-game road swing as the Clippers return to the west coast following Tuesday’s meltdown in a 121-110 loss at Philadelphia. The Clippers squandered a 19-point lead as L.A. couldn’t capitalize off an impressive away victory the night before in Atlanta. Blake Griffin returned to the Clippers’ lineup on Tuesday after missing the previous 18 games with a knee injury. Griffin struggled from the floor by scoring 12 points on 3-of-11 shooting, but did pull down 11 rebounds.

Golden State (39-7 SU, 21-24-1 ATS) returns home following a four-game trip, capped off by 113-103 triumph at Charlotte as 9 ½-point favorites. The Warriors are riding an 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS run in the last nine contests, including four consecutive victories at Oracle Arena. Steve Kerr’s squad has stepped up defensively during this stretch by cashing the UNDER eight times, including holding four opponents to below 100 points.

This series has been owned by the Warriors recently with Golden State beating Los Angeles seven consecutive times. The last victory by the Clippers over the Warriors came at Staples Center on Christmas night in 2014, but Golden State captured the first meeting this season, 115-98 as four-point road favorites in December.

The Warriors jumped out to a 37-19 advantage after one quarter and never looked back as Klay Thompson led Golden State with 24 points. Stephen Curry chipped in 19 points for the Warriors, but last season’s MVP failed to hit a three-pointer in eight attempts.

The Clippers have covered in three of the past five trips to Oakland, but haven’t won at Golden State in the regular season since Christmas of 2011. Los Angeles continues to play without point guard Chris Paul, who is sidelined with a thumb injury. Austin Rivers has filled in nicely for Paul by putting up 27 points in Monday’s victory at Atlanta and 20 points in Tuesday’s defeat at Philadelphia.

Let’s Do It Again

The Nuggets held off the Suns on Thursday, 127-120 to barely cash as 6 ½-point home favorites. Forward Nikola Jokic led the way for Denver with 29 points and 14 rebounds, but suffered a hip injury and will not play on Saturday night. Denver heads to Phoenix looking for the four-game season sweep of the Suns, as the Nuggets have racked up at least 120 points in each of the first three victories over Phoenix. Mike Malone’s squad is currently on a 7-1 ATS run, although the Nuggets have dropped four of their past five road games.

The Suns had covered seven of nine games prior to Thursday’s defeat at Denver, as Phoenix tries to turn around its recent home woes. Earl Watson’s club has lost four straight games at Talking Stick Resort Arena, while each of those games sailed OVER the total.

Tired Legs

Both the Kings and Hornets blew fourth quarter leads on Friday as these two teams meet up in Charlotte. Sacramento squandered a 10-point advantage with six minutes remaining as Indiana rallied for a 115-111 home triumph in overtime, snapping the Kings’ modest two-game winning streak. The Kings have covered four straight contests on this eight-game road swing, as their longest ATS hot streak this season is five games, coming back in November.

The Hornets held a six-point advantage with five minutes left in regulation before falling short to the Knicks, 110-107. Charlotte has lost three straight since a three-game winning streak, as the Hornets try to end a two-game slide at home. Last season, the Kings and Hornets went to overtime in each of their two matchups with Charlotte winning each time, including erasing a 22-point deficit in a home win in November 2015.

Heating Up

Don’t look now, but Miami has won six consecutive games following Friday’s 100-88 triumph over scuffling Chicago as seven-point road underdogs. The Heat return home, where they have won each of their past four games to host the Pistons. Detroit was the last team to win at American Airlines Arena back on January 1 as the Pistons rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit for a 107-98 victory as 6 ½-point favorites.

The Pistons have been off since Monday’s 109-104 home defeat to the Kings, snapping a three-game winning streak. Stan Van Gundy’s squad has lost six of their past nine games away from the Palace of Auburn Hills, but Detroit is victorious in two of its last three visits to south Florida.

Buck Off

Milwaukee began 2017 in a prime position for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, but the Bucks have slid off course recently. Jason Kidd’s team has dropped seven of their last eight games, including Friday’s 102-86 setback at Toronto, their third loss to the Raptors this season. The Bucks face another solid Atlantic division squad on Saturday as the Celtics invade BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Boston picked up its second consecutive victory by blowing out Orlando on Friday, 128-98, even though forward Al Horford sat out with a groin injury. Horford is expected back in the lineup on Saturday as the Celtics have lost three of their past four games away from TD Garden. Both the Celtics and Bucks have gone the opposite way this season with no rest as Boston owns a 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS mark, while Milwaukee has slumped to a 2-7 SU/ATS ledger on the second end of a back-to-back.

Head-to-Head Trends

Utah and Memphis hook up in a solid matchup of Western Conference teams with eyes on the postseason in Salt Lake City. The Jazz have struggled with the Grizzlies this season by losing two of three meetings, while the winner of the last two games has failed to bust the 88-point mark. Memphis has fared well with no rest following Friday’s game at Portland by compiling an 8-3 SU and 7-4 ATS mark on the second of a back-to-back set.

Brooklyn plays with no rest on Saturday at Minnesota after covering as 17-point underdogs in Friday’s 124-116 setback at Cleveland. The Nets go for the season sweep of the Wolves after knocking off Minnesota at Barclays Center in November, 119-110 as four-point underdogs. Minnesota is listed as a double-digit favorite for only the second time this season after blasting Philadelphia in the first time in this role in November.

Free NBA Picks: Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, Opening Line Report and Handicapping
by Alan Matthews

The NFL has parity -- just look at the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl. Major League Baseball has it too as your last two champions are the Royals and Cubs. The NBA doesn't really have parity as the best teams just about always win the championship. I'm not here to tell you the Warriors or Cavaliers won't win it all this June. But we are at the time of year where the top teams are slogging through the season and waiting for the All-Star break -- Cleveland is a prime example. Thus you can get some nice underdog value at times. For example, entering the weekend the Warriors have the NBA's best record this month, but they also had an inexplicable loss in Miami earlier this week. Right behind them for January's best records are the Atlanta Hawks, who were supposed to have mailed in the season when they traded Kyle Korver, and the semi-tanking Philadelphia 76ers. On Monday, there were nine games, and eight underdogs won. It's that time of year.

Kings at Hornets ( -6, 208)

I don't expect the Kings to have much in the tank here as it's Game No. 5 of a season-long eight game road trip and they were in Indiana on Friday night. Charlotte was at the Knicks on Friday. It's the first meeting of the season between Sacramento and Charlotte. They played two high-scoring overtime games last season, with the Hornets taking both. DeMarcus Cousins had a Kings record 56 points in a double-OT home loss.

Key trends: The underdog is 4-1 against the spread in the past five meetings. The "over/under" is 4-1 in those five.

Early lean: Hornets and over.

Pistons at Heat (TBA)

Miami was in Chicago on Friday with Hassan Whiteside out (ankle). Huge advantage for the Pistons as they haven't played since Monday when they lost 109-104 at home to Sacramento. Detroit starting shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope returned after missing four games with a left rotator cuff injury. He scored 14 points but went only 4 of 14 from the field. Detroit is 2-0 vs. the Heat this year, with Caldwell-Pope is averaging 22.5 points. The Heat have taken five of the past eight at home in the series.

Key trends: The Pistons are 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings. The over is 7-0 in Detroit's past seven vs. the East.

Early lean: Pistons and under.

Celtics at Bucks (pick'em, 218.5)

Both on the second of a back-to-back as Boston hosted Orlando on Friday and Milwaukee was in Toronto. It's the first meeting of the season between these teams. The Celtics won two of three high-scoring meetings last year. Scorching-hot Boston guard Isaiah Thomas averaged "only" 20.0 points. Remember Bucks center Larry Sanders? He was a pretty good player for a while but then walked away from the NBA because of some off-court issues. He worked out for the Celtics on Thursday. They could use some rebounding help, so keep an eye on that. Sanders hasn't played since the 2014-15 season when he averaged 7.3 points and 6.1 rebounds in just 21.7 minutes per game for Milwaukee.

Key trends: The Celtics are 4-1 ATS in their past five in Milwaukee. The over is 5-1 in the past six meetings.

Early lean: Celtics and over.

Clippers at Warriors (-14, 226.5)

This is your Saturday night ABC game. Los Angeles has been off since being upset Tuesday 121-110 in Philadelphia in Blake Griffin's return from injury. He had 12 points on 3-for-11 shooting on a bit of a minutes restriction (29 in that one). Doc Rivers didn't coach the team due to illness but should be back here. Golden State concluded a four-game road trip on Wednesday with a 113-103 win in Charlotte. Kevin Durant had 33 points and Steph Curry 28 in his hometown as the Warriors stretched their streak of not losing back-to-back regular-season games to an NBA-record 132 games. The Warriors beat the Clippers 115-98 on Dec. 7 and have taken seven straight in the series and the past nine in Oakland.

Key trends: The road team is 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings. The under is 6-2 in the previous eight.

Early lean: Might give the Clips a shot to win if Chris Paul was around but not here. I might take all those points though.

Grizzlies at Jazz (-6, 187.5)

Memphis was in Portland on Friday. Utah ended a two-game losing streak with a 96-88 home win over the sorry Lakers on Thursday. Newly-named All-Star Gordon Hayward had 24 points. The Jazz used a 16-0 run in the third quarter for a 68-56 lead that they never relinquished. Rodney Hood returned to the starting lineup after missing five games with a knee hyperextension and bone bruise. He had five points in 22 minutes. This is the final meeting of the season between Utah and Memphis, with the Grizzlies leading 2-1 in low-scoring games.

Key trends: The home team is 5-2 ATS in the past seven meetings. The under is 5-1 in the previous six.

Early lean: Jazz and under.

Nuggets at Suns (-1, 235)

These teams played Thursday in Denver and the Nuggets won 127-120, but it could have been costly. Nikola Jokic, who has been a monster for weeks, had 29 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists before leaving late after a hard fall. Right now it's being called a hip strain, but Jokic was set for an MRI on Friday. If he's out a long period of time, and early reports are at least two games, that crushes Denver's playoff hopes. Nuggets point guard Emmanuel Mudiay missed a third straight game due to a sore lower back and doesn't seem likely to play here. The Nuggets go for the four-game sweep and haven't scored less than 120 points vs. Phoenix this year.

Key trends: The Nuggets are 6-13 ATS in their past 19 at Phoenix. The over is 5-0 in the Suns' past five at home.

Early lean: Suns avoid the sweep. Go over.

Nets at Timberwolves (-10.5, 219)

Brooklyn was in Cleveland on Friday, so be on Brook Lopez sit-down alert here. Minnesota's attempt for a first four-game winning streak since December 2012 came up short at home to Indiana on Thursday, 109-103. Indiana outrebounded Minnesota 44-34 and shot 52 percent. Newly-named All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns had 33 points and 10 rebounds for his 35th double-double of the season. Minnesota lost in Brooklyn 119-110 on Nov. 8. Lopez scored 26 points and Bojan Bogdanovic hit a key 3-pointer in the final minute. The Wolves swept last year and have taken 10 of the past 15 meetings overall.

Key trends: The Wolves are 1-6 ATS in their past seven vs. teams with a losing record. The Nets are 2-10 ATS in their past 12 in Minnesota. The under is 6-1 in the Wolves' past seven at home.

Early lean: Wolves and under.

Kansas at Kentucky
By Brian Edwards

The fourth season of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge will take place Saturday. The Big 12 has dominated the first three years of the event, owning the series by margins of 7-3, 6-4 and 7-3 from 2013-2014 through last season.

The highlight of this year’s matchups will go down in Lexington, where Kentucky and its rabid fan base will welcome Bill Self’s Kansas squad to Rupp Arena. Kentucky and Kansas are the two winningest programs in college basketball history. UK has 2,222 wins, while KU has won 2,204 games.

Kentucky (17-3 straight up, 12-8 against the spread) will be looking to avenge a 90-84 overtime loss at Kansas last season. It was an unfathomable loss for UK’s betting backers, who were holding tickets for a 5.5-point underdog. The Wildcats had led 46-40 at halftime.

The departed Wayne Selden Jr. scored 33 points for the winners, who also had Frank Mason (13 points) and Devonte Graham (11) in double figures. Mason had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Graham dished out five helpers compared to merely one turnover.

Tyler Ulis paced the ‘Cats with 26 points, eight assists and three steals. Isaiah Briscoe had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Both schools will be in bounce-back mode after losing road games earlier this week. Kansas saw its 18-game winning streak snapped at West Virginia, while UK took its first SEC loss at Tennessee.

John Calipari’s team lost an 82-80 decision in Knoxville as a 10.5-point favorite. The 162 combined points fell ‘under’ the 167-point total. Robert Hubbs III was the catalyst for the Volunteers with 25 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Grant Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and six assists without a turnover.

In the losing effort, Malik Monk matched Hubbs’s game-high honors with 25 points, but he made only 3-of-13 attempts from 3-point range and had more turnovers (five) than assists (four). Edrice ‘Bam’ Adebayo hit 7-of-8 from both the field and the free-throw line in a 21-point effort. De’Aaron Fox finished with 17 points, four assists and two steals, while Briscoe contributed 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.

UK has won 10 of its 11 home games while producing an 8-3 spread record. This will be UK’s first single-digit home favorite situation of the season. In fact, Cal’s ‘Cats have only been single-digit ‘chalk’ three times this year. They’ve 2-1 both SU and ATS in those contests, beating North Carolina (103-100; -1) and Michigan State (69-48; -8) on neutral courts.

Kentucky took its two other defeats at Louisville by a 73-70 score as a 1.5-point favorite and at home vs. UCLA (97-92; -11). UK is ranked No. 2 at KenPom.com, fourth in the Associated Press’s poll and fourth in the RPI Rankings. The ‘Cats are 4-3 against the RPI Top 50 and 9-3 versus the Top 100. Their best wins include neutral-court scalps of UNC and Michigan St., in addition to home victories over Arkansas and South Carolina.

Monk is averaging a team-high 21.8 points per game while hitting 49.8 percent of his shots from the field. The true freshman is a future lottery pick with a smooth jumper and explosive moves off the dribble. Monk is making 39.9 percent of his launches from 3-point land and 82.9 percent of his free-throw attempts.

Fox (16.2 PPG) has a 118/43 assists-to-turnovers ratio and a team-high 32 steals. Briscoe is a box-score bully, averaging 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Adebayo provides an interior presence, averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He has a team-best 34 blocked shots and is shooting at a 62.4 percent clip from the field.

Kentucky is second in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 92.2 PPG. The ‘Cats are 13th in the country in field-goal percentage (49.6%).

Kansas (18-2 SU, 6-12 ATS) has won four of its five road games, but has limped to a 1-4 spread record in those assignments. The road loss came Tuesday in Morgantown, where West Virginia ran KU out of the gym, 85-69, as a 3.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The 154 points dipped ‘under’ the 159.5-point total.

Josh Jackson had a team-best 22 points, four rebounds and four assists before fouling out. (He also had one of the sickest dunks of the season in traffic!) Graham and Mason were also in double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

KU is No. 2 in the AP poll, No. 6 in the RPI and No. 9 at KenPom.com. The Jayhawks own a 5-1 record versus the RPI Top 50 and a 10-2 mark against the Top 100. They have home wins over Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Stanford, Nebraska and UNC-Asheville. In addition, Self’s team has beaten Duke and Georgia on neutral courts while also capturing victories at TCU and at Iowa State.

KU’s only other loss came in the season opener to Indiana, which knocked off the Jayhawks 103-99 in overtime at the Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu. The Hoosiers won outright as six-point underdogs.

Mason is a legit candidate for National Player of the Year honors. The senior point guard is averaging team-highs in scoring (19.8 PPG), assists (5.2 APG), field-goal percentage (51.2%) and 3-point percentage (52.8%). Mason also has 26 steals.

Jackson is a true freshman who like Monk and Fox, is a future lottery pick. He relentlessly attacks the basket and has incredible athleticism. Jackson is averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Jackson’s weakness to date has been his work at the charity stripe, where he’s making only 55.8 percent of his FTs.

Graham (13.6 PPG) has a 94/31 assists-to-turnovers ratio, averages 1.6 SPG and drains 39.2 percent of his shots from downtown.

Kansas is ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (41.8%), 10th in field-goal percentage (49.8%) and 16th in scoring offense (84.6 PPG).

KU has been an underdog twice this season, beating Duke 77-75 as a 2.5-point ‘dog at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mason led the way with a team-best 21 points. The other ‘dog spot came in the aforementioned loss in Morgantown.

Kansas isn’t just dealing with the loss at WVU, but a pair of off-court developments have been making news in Lawrence. On Wednesday, news broke that the University of Kansas police are investigating the reported rape of a 16-year-old girl at McCarthy Hall, a dorm that houses the KU men’s basketball team and other male students.

According to a police report obtained by the Kansas City Star, the alleged rape and three additional crimes took place on Dec. 17 and 18 between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The other crimes are furnishing alcohol to a minor, contributing to a child’s misconduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The police report lists five KU players as witnesses: Frank Mason III, Mitch Lightfoot, Lagerald Tick, Tucker Vang and Josh Jackson. Self told The Star, “From what I have learned, a witness can be many things, including a person who can potentially provide information, whether an eyewitness or not, or has been present before, during or after an alleged incident.

“All comments moving forward will come from the university or KU police department. If information is brought to us that warrants action at any time, the appropriate action will be taken.”

Then on Thursday night, Kansas announced that sophomore forward Carlton Bragg has been suspended indefinitely. Bragg is averaging 15 minutes per game, contributing 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. “This violation is not connected to the alleged incident in McCarthy Hall on Dec. 17,” Self said in a statement.

The ‘over’ is 13-7 overall for UK, 7-4 in its home games.

The ‘under’ is 10-8 overall for the Jayhawks, 4-1 in their road outings. They’ve seen the ‘under’ cash in five consecutive games.

These storied programs have faced each other nine times since 1998. UK has won outright in five of those nine meetings, but KU has a 5-4 spread record. The ‘Cats have won three of the last four encounters both SU and ATS. The ‘under’ is 6-3 in the last nine UK-KU showdowns.

Tip-off on ESPN is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Other SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchups include Texas A&M at West Virginia (noon Eastern, ESPN) Florida at Oklahoma (2:00, ESPN), Kansas State at Tennessee (2:00, ESPN2), LSU at Texas Tech (2:00, ESPNU), Texas at Georgia (4:00, ESPN), Iowa St. at Vanderbilt (4:00, ESPN2), Arkansas at Oklahoma State (4:00, ESPNU), Baylor at Ole Miss (6:00, ESPN2) and Auburn at TCU (6:00, ESPNU).

-- Florida guard Canyon Barry sat out Wednesday’s blowout win at LSU after spraining his ankle at Monday’s practice. Barry is listed as ‘questionable’ at Oklahoma. The grad transfer from College of Charleston is the Gators’ second-leading scorer with a 12.4 PPG average.

-- This will be just the second time OU head coach Lon Kruger has faced Florida, the school he took to its first Final Four in 1994 behind the play of Craig Brown, Dan Cross and Andrew DeClercq. Kruger bolted UF to take the Illinois job after his 1995-96 team failed to make a third straight NCAA Tournament. Frustrated by playing second fiddle to the football program and the inability to sign the nation’s top player, Vince Carter from nearly by Daytona Mainland High School, who chose North Carolina over UF and FSU even though the Gators had just gone to the Final Four, Kruger welcomed the chance to go to Illinois, a basketball-first school. His exit was the best thing that ever happened to the UF hoops program. It led to one of the greatest hires in college basketball history when former AD Jeremy Foley plucked Billy ‘The Kid’ Donovan away from Marshall even though he was only 30 years old at the time. Of course, Donovan would lead the Gators to back-to-back national titles and 14 NCAA Tournaments during his dynastic 19-year tenure. On the way to the first of four trips to the Final Four in 2000, Florida and Illinois collided in the Round of 32 two days after Mike Miller’s buzzer beater allowed UF to slip past Butler. My Dad and I had great seats in the lower level at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum in Winston Salem that Sunday afternoon when Florida destroyed Kruger’s Illinois team 93-76 to advance to the Sweet 16. Teddy ‘Ballgames & Parlays’ Dupay and Udonis Haslem led the way for the Gators, who would literally go right through Tobacco Road on their way to their first national-title game, where they were beaten down by Michigan St.’s ‘Flintstones’ squad led by Mateen Cleaves. Prior to the loss to the Spartans, UF beat top-seeded Duke in the East Region semifinals at the Carrier Dome before blasting Doug Gottlieb’s Oklahoma State team. Then in the Final Four, UF beat up on UNC.

-- In case you were wondering (I was), all of the charges filed against Cleaves for an alleged sexual assault in October of 2015 were dismissed last year.

-- Taking a page out of his mentor Bobby Knight’s playbook, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has banned his players from the team’s locker room and from wearing school gear on campus. Coach K remains on indefinite leave from the team after undergoing back surgery earlier this month. He called a team meeting Tuesday night at his house one day after the Blue Devils lost at home to N.C. State. They play at Wake Forest on Saturday.

-- Is this finally the year for Northwestern? For those not in the know, the Wildcats have NEVER head their name called on Selection Sunday. That’s right, there have been zero trips to the NCAA Tournament that started in 1939 in the program’s history. However, after Thursday’s 73-61 win over Nebraska as an 8.5-home favorite, Chris Collins’s team is 17-4 overall, 13-5 ATS and 6-2 in Big Ten play for the first time since 1943-44. Northwestern has won five in a row both SU and ATS. The Wildcats’ four defeats have come to RPI Top-50 foes, including a 70-68 loss at Butler (#3 RPI) and a pair of 70-66 setbacks vs. Notre Dame (neutral court) and vs. Minnesota (#19 RPI). They don’t have the best RPI (#33), going 2-4 versus the Top 50 but 6-4 against the Top 100. They have a home win over Wake Forest, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Dayton and road win at Penn State, at Nebraska and at Ohio State. Barring a big-time collapse, this is most likely the year in Evanston.

-- Oregon won for a school-record 17th consecutive time Thursday by winning 73-67 at Utah as a 1.5-point road favorite in Salt Lake City. After missing one game with a foot injury, guard Dillon Brooks returned to the lineup to score 19 points to help the Ducks join Arizona atop the Pac-12 standings with identical 8-0 conference records. They host Arizona in Eugene next Saturday (2/4).

-- After losing 86-80 at Harvard on Dec. 6, Northeastern didn’t taste defeat for more than five weeks. The Huskies won eight in a row and went 7-0 ATS in the process, hooking me up with winners galore. They even won at Breslin Center against Michigan St. However, following Thursday’s 51-49 loss to Elon as a 5.5-point home ‘chalk,’ Northeastern has dropped four in a row both SU and ATS. The losing streak began with a 74-67 loss at Towson on Jan. 14. The Huskies can avenge that defeat and get back on track when they host the Tigers on Saturday.

-- Two SEC coaches could be issued pink slips really soon: LSU’s Johnny Jones and Missouri’s Kim Anderson.

NCAA Basketball Expert Predictions: Three Interesting Jan. 28 Opening Lines
by Alan Matthews

I'm sure it's not news to you that all of the good nonconference matchups in college basketball's regular season take place in November and December. Things like the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. However, to stand apart a bit, the SEC and Big 12 decided to move their one-day Challenge to the middle of the season last year. I think that's a great idea for a break from the monotony of conference play, and that returns this Saturday with 10 games -- there are only 10 Big 12 teams, so four SEC teams are out of luck. You can see all 10 on some form of ESPN, and one clearly stands above the rest. The Big 12 has won the previous three Challenges.

Providence at Marquette (-9)

Big East game at 2 p.m. ET with no national TV. This screams letdown game to me for Marquette off its stunning 74-72 upset of No. 1 Villanova on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles were down 17 at one point and led for less than 30 seconds overall in the game. Katin Reinhardt hit two free throws with 11.6 seconds left for the winning points. It was the second time Marquette beat the AP's No. 1-ranked team. The Golden Eagles, led by Dwyane Wade, beat Kentucky in the 2003 NCAA Tournament. The Villanova win will be a tad costly to the school as it was fined $5K by the Big East after fans stormed the court. The school will donate that money to charity, so everyone wins. That victory obviously hugely helps Marquette's at-large NCAA tourney chances.

At 13-9 overall and 3-6 in the conference, the Friars won't be going back to the Big Dance barring an unlikely Big East Tournament title. This was expected to be a rebuilding year after losing stars Kris Dunn and Ben Bentil to the NBA Draft. PC lost a second game in a row Wednesday, 91-86 as host St. John's scored the game's final six points. Not often you lose a game when shooting 62 percent as a team as Providence did. The Friars won two thrillers against Marquette last year.

Key trends: The Friars are 5-2 against the spread in their past 7 Saturday games. Marquette is 2-5 ATS in its past seven on Saturday. Providence is 0-8 ATS in its past eight trips to Milwaukee.

I'm leaning: Providence to cover, not win.

No. 5 Baylor at Ole Miss ( +10.5 )

Challenge game at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The Bears reached No. 1 in the polls a couple of weeks ago for the first time in school history and could get back there with a win here and a Gonzaga upset loss at Pepperdine later Saturday (not likely). Baylor has just the one loss at West Virginia and has won four straight since. On Wednesday, it escaped a Texas Tech upset attempt in Waco, 65-61. Despite hitting a season-low 35.4 percent from the field, the Bears' 26-for-28 performance from the free-throw line saved them as they extended their program-best start to 19-1. Big 12 Player of the Year candidate Johnathan Motley had 25 points, including 15 of 16 free throws, with nine rebounds.

The Rebels had a two-game winning streak snapped with an 80-76 loss to former Big 12 school Texas A&M on Wednesday. Ole Miss shot 49 percent from the field and 44 percent from 3, but A&M shot 50.9 percent overall and crushed the Rebels on the boards. Ole Miss entered the game ranked second in the SEC in rebounding and had been beaten on the glass only four times all year. Sebastian Saiz, among the national rebounding leaders at 11.5, was held to seven rebounds. Ole Miss is 0-3 vs. ranked teams this season, with the closest loss by seven at Florida.

Key trends: The Bears are 2-5 ATS in their past seven overall. The Rebs are 9-1-1 ATS in their past 11 on Saturday.

I'm leaning: Might Baylor be looking ahead to Wednesday at Kansas? I think so. Take the points.

No. 2 Kansas at No. 4 Kentucky (-7)

This Challenge game and potential National Championship preview is at 6:15 p.m. ET on ESPN. Sadly, this did lose a bit of luster when both were upset on that crazy Tuesday night around the country. Otherwise the winner here might be the No. 1 team in Monday's polls. Of course, Kentucky is No. 1 all time in college basketball in wins and Kansas is No. 2. There will be several future NBA players on the floor along with the likely Big 12 Player of the Year in KU senior Frank Mason III and SEC Player of the Year in Kentucky freshman Malik Monk. That's really the story here: the KU veteran backcourt of Mason and Devonte' Graham vs. the UK freshman duo of Monk and De'Aaron Fox.

Fox was in question Tuesday night at Tennessee after hurting his ankle last Saturday but did play and had 17 points and four assists in the 82-80 loss. Monk had 25. It ended Kentucky's streak of seven straight games in which the Wildcats had shot 50 percent or better. I recommended UT plus the points in that one. In all honesty, I was prepared to take West Virginia over Kansas on Tuesday until I saw the opening line of WVU -3. I thought the spread would be flipped, and I let that influence me. The Jayhawks lost 85-69 to end an 18-game winning streak. Mason had just 15, his third-lowest total of the season. KU was also only 6-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Kansas will be without forward Carlton Bragg Jr. for this one as he has been suspended indefinitely. There is a police investigation into alleged rape at a campus dormitory that houses many of the basketball players ongoing, but Bill Self said this isn't related to that. Bragg averages 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds. Kentucky visited Lawrence last year and lost 90-84 in OT. Mason had 13 points and eight rebounds but was only the third or so option on Kansas back then.

Key trends: The Jayhawks are 1-4 ATS in their past five on the road. The Wildcats are 5-0 ATS in their past five after a loss. The favorite has covered six in a row in this series.

I'm leaning: Kentucky.

'SEC/Big 12 Challenge'

Kansas at Kentucky January 28, 6:05 EST

The eyes of most college basketball fans as well as those with a penchant for gaming will be on Saturday's SEC/Big 12 Challenge between top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks (18-2, 6-12 ATS) and Kentucky Wildcats (17-3, 12-8 ATS) at Rupp Arena.

John Calipari's Wildcats' with four players in double digit scoring lead by Malik Monk (21.8) light it up dropping 92.2 points/game on 49.6% shooting, 35.3% from outside. Jayhawks with its guard-heavy lineup are no slouches at getting the ball through the hoop hitting 49.8% from the field along with a Big-12 leading 41.8 from long-range netting 84.6 points/game.

Both schools will be looking to get back in the win column as Jayhawks unable to solve Mountaineers' moniker defense had an 18-game win streak snapped falling 85-69. Meanwhile, Wildcats suffering a similar fate last effort were stunned 82-20 by Volunteers in what is being labelled as Black Tuesday with #'s 1, 2 and 4 ranked teams all losing.

Kansas snapped a two game skid vs Wildcats last season winning 90-84 in Lawrence but failed as -5.5 point favorites. With the victory Jayhawks are now 3-4 (4-3 ATS) in seven regular season encounters including 1-3 (2-2 ATS) running the hardwood in Lexington.

Kentucky with a single blemish the past 48 in front of its frienzied crowd, home court will play a big part in Wildcats' winning this contest. However, covering hasn't been automatic money for Wildcats at Rupp Arena, as they're 28-20 ATS in those home games. Other betting trends of interest: Wildcats are on a 1-5 ATS skid, Jayhawks 3-9 ATS slide, 6-7 ATS last 13 away.

Saturday’s games

Texas A&M is just 11-8 but only team that beat them by more than 11 was Kentucky (100-58). West Virginia lost two of last three games but hammered Kansas by 16 Tuesday in their last game; Mountaineers force turnovers 30.6% of time, #1 in country, but part of that was they’ve played #346 non-conference schedule (23.9% in Big X games), so they’ve bullied lesser teams. Texas A&M won its last two games by total of five points; they’re 1-6 vs top 50 teams, with best win over #49 Va Tech. Aggies start a freshman and three sophomores.

Home side won five of six Notre Dame-Georgia Tech ACC games; Irish lost two of three visits here, last two of which were decided by total of four points. All six games were decided by 8 or less points or in OT. Notre Dame lost two of last three games; they’re 3-1 on ACC road, with wins at Pitt/Miami/Va Tech. Yellow Jackets are 4-4 in ACC despite being picked last by most everyone; they’re 3-1 at home in ACC with only loss to Louisville- they beat Fla St/Clemson/UNC at home. ACC road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-2-1 vs spread.

Florida State was rolling until getting whacked by 22 at Ga Tech last game- they were down 41-15 at the half!!! Seminoles split last four games after a 16-1 start; they’re 1-2 on ACC road, with 60-58 win at Oakland, losses at UNC/Ga Tech. Syracuse won three of four ACC meetings with FSU, winning the two here by 13-13 points. Orangemen are making 78.5% on foul line, #1 in ACC play; they’re 4-0 at home, 0-4 on road in ACC, with home wins by 15-11-23-5 points. ACC road favorites of 3 or less points are 3-1-1 against the spread.

Tulsa is 5-2 in AAC despite losing 7 of top 8 scorers from LY; Hurricane is 3-0 in AAC home games, winning by 2-10-7 points- they get to foul line a lot and make 77.5% once they get there. Central Florida lost its last two games by 5 points each; they’re 1-2 on AAC road, losing by 15 at UConn, winning at Tulane. Tulsa won its last three games with UCF, by 2-15-8 points; Knights are 0-6 in last six visits to Tulsa, losing by 2-18-9-20-5-15 points. AAC home teams are 6-2 vs spread this season in games with spread of 3 or less points.

Young Maryland team (#319 experience) won its last five games, with three of those on road; Terrapins are 10-1 this season in games decided by 8 or less points. They turn ball over 20.8% of time in Big 14 games, but are tied for first anyway. Minnesota lost its last four games after a 15-2 start, losing last three games by 6 or less points- they’re 3-5 in Big 14, with 3 of 8 games going OT. Minnesota/Maryland split first two Big 14 meetings; Gophers pulled upset win LY as a 10-point underdog. Big 14 home favorites of 5 or less points are 12-7 vs spread.

St Bonaventure won its last three games, allowing 56 pts/game, but against lower part of A-14; they’re 5-2 in league, 2-1 on road, losing by 17 at Richmond. Bonnies won five of last seven games with Rhode Island, beating Rams by hoop in Olean LY; teams split last four meetings here, all of which were decided by 6 or less points. URI lost three of last five games; Garrett missed last three games. Rams are 2-1 at home in ACC, beating UMass/St Joe’s; they’re making only 56.1% on foul line. A-14 home favorites of 7 or less points are 7-10 vs spread.

Duke lost three of last four games, allowing 83 pts/game in losing last two on road, at Florida St/Louisville; Blue Devils are 1-3 in true road games this season- they beat UNLV in Vegas, but game was off-campus and UNLV is terrible anyway. Duke won 12 of last 13 games with Wake Forest, winning last four by 8-43-16-8 points- they won three of last four visits here, with wins by 8-5-8 points. Deacons are 3-5 in ACC, 2-2 at home, losing by 5 to Clemson, 6 to Carolina. ACC road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-2-1 vs spread.

Nevada had miracle comeback at New Mexico two weeks ago; they were down 14 with 1:16 left and Lobos had ball, but Wolf Pack won in OT. Nevada was 15-32 on arc, Lobos 26-40 on line yet Wolf Pack won by only a point. Nevada is 3-1 at home in MW, winning by 25-3-7 points, losing to Fresno. New Mexico is best team in MW at getting to foul line; they’re won last four games, scoring 79.3 pts/game. Lobos are 3-1 on MW road, with only loss by 4 at Utah State. Mountain West home favorites of 6 or less points are 8-10 vs spread.

I know this isn’t a conference game, but Kentucky won its four SEC home games by average of 26 points- they’ve struggled some on road. Wildcats are #345 experience team that played #10 pace thus far- they’re 3-2 vs top 50 teams, are 17-3 vs schedule #25. Kansas had its 18-game win streak snapped Tuesday in West Va; Jayhawks will be without backup big man Bragg, who is suspended here. Kansas is shooting 41.8% on arc, #4 in country but only 63.2% on foul line (#332). Kansas starts two juniors, two seniors; they’re a much older team.

Alabama won 68-58 at Mississippi State January 3, in brickfest where teams combined to go 7-34 on arc; Crimson Tide won seven of last eight games with MSU- three of last four series games were decided by 4 or less points, with State winning 67-66 in Tuscaloosa LY. Bulldogs are much improved at 13-6; they’re 2-1 on SEC road, with wins at LSU/Arkansas, are 2-5 vs top 100 teams, with two best wins Arkansas/Texas A&M. Alabama won seven of last nine games, is 5-2 in SEC, with four wins by 10+. SEC home favorites of 6 or less points are 7-16 vs spread.

Cal-Irvine/Cal-Davis are tied in loss column atop Big West; Anteaters are 8-2 in last ten games vs Davis, sweeping Aggies by 1-21 points LY- they won 62-61 here. Irvine had won eight in row before bad home loss to Cal Poly Thursday; UCI is a very young team. especially with Nelson out hurt again. Davis won six of last seven games, with loss at Riverside by 6; Aggies are at home for first time in three weeks- they’re 2-0 at home in league, beating UCSB by 26, Cal Poly by 4. Big West road favorites are 2-3 against the spread this month.

Colorado finally got its first Pac-12 win (1-7) Thursday, beating Oregon St by 7 after losing its previous two games in OT; Buffaloes lost at home to the LA schools by 15-3 in their other home games in Pac-12. Colorado is #39 experience team but is #10 in league at protecting ball, #8 on arc- they’ve underachieved. Oregon is first in Pac-12 in 7 of 9 defensive metrics; they’ve won 17 games in row, are 7-0 in Pac-12, with road wins by 22-19-6 points. Ducks’ last loss was Nov 21 to Georgetown on a neutral floor. Pac-12 road favorites of 5+ points are 7-5 vs spread. Ducks won three of last four games with Colorado, but are 0-4 in Pac-12 visits to Boulder.

St Mary’s won 12 of last 13 games; they were tied at half with USF Thursday, still won by 20. Gaels play slowest tempo in country (Santa Clara is 10th-slowest); they’re an experienced team that is 12-2 in last 14 games with Santa Clara, winning six of last seven visits here. St Mary’s is 3-1 on WCC road, with wins by 12-11-41 points and loss at Gonzaga. Santa Clara is 4-1 at home in WCC with loss by 31 to Gonzaga; they’re 44-108 (40.7%) on arc in last four games. WCC road favorites of 9+ points are 6-2 vs spread this season.

UFC on Fox 23 Best Bets
By Brian Edwards

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will land at Pepsi Center in Denver on Saturday for UFC on FOX 23, a 12-fight card headlined by a women’s bantamweight scrap between No. 1 contender Valentina ‘The Bullet’ Shevchenko and No. 2-ranked Julianna ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ Pena.

As of Friday afternoon, most betting shops had Shevchenko (13-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) installed as a -150 favorite, leaving Pena at +130 on the comeback (risk $100 to win $130). The total was 4.5 rounds (‘over’ -155, ‘under’ +135).

Shevchenko is off a main-event win over former women’s bantamweight champ Holly Holm by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) at UFC on FOX 20 in Chicago this past July. The 28-year-old Russian is a former world champion in kickboxing and Muay Thai. She beat Holm by winning most of the exchanges and masterfully controlling distance en route to victory as a +170 underdog.

Shevchenko has spent her training camp in Colorado getting acclimated to the altitude. She has taken her only two career losses to Liz Carmouche, who once challenge Ronda Rousey for the belt, and current champ Amanda Nunes, who won a UD over Shevchenko (29-28, 29-27, 29-27) at UFC 196. Shevchenko’s other UFC win came via split decision over Sarah Kaufman at UFC Orlando at UFC Orlando in December of 2015.

Pena (8-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is a 27-year-old from Spokane, Washington, who recently relocated to Chicago. She won Season 18 of the Ultimate Fighter by defeating Jessica Rakoczy by TKO (punches) with one second left in the first round at TUF 18 Finale.

However, shortly after the victory, she sustained a serious knee injury in training that damaged her ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus, keeping her out for all of 2014. Pena returned to the Octagon in April of 2015 and beat Milana Dudieva by first-round KO (punches and elbows). She followed that up with a UD win (29-27, 29-27, 29-27) over veteran Jessica Eye at UFC 192.

Pena is off the best performance of her career, handing Cat Zingano just the second loss of her career by winning a UD (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 200.

Although we don’t know yet if Nunes will defend her 135-pound belt or go up to 145 to take on the winner of the looming Germaine De Randamie-Holm bout that’ll determine that division’s first champ, we most certainly know that the Pena-Shevchenko winner will be next in line to challenge for the bantamweight strap.

Prediction: Shevchenko has the advantage when the fight is standing, while it’ll be all about Pena if the fight goes to the ground. I was stunned to see Pena clearly get the best of Zingano in Rounds 2 and 3 with her wrestling and grappling, Zingano’s greatest strengths. Therefore, I think Shevchenko is going to struggle to stop Pena’s takedowns. I was liking Pena earlier in the week at even money. Now with the +130 underdog odds, I’m even more bullish on to the play. Two units on Pena.

In the co-main event, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone will take on Jorge Masvidal in a crucial welterweight showdown. As of Friday, most spots had Cerrone (32-7 MMA, 19-4 UFC) listed as a -160 ‘chalk’ with Masvidal as a +130 underdog. The total was 2.5 rounds (‘over’ -220, ‘under’ +180).

Cerrone will be making his 24th career walk to the Octagon and attempting to tie middleweight champ Michael Bisping for the most career UFC wins (20). He’ll do so in front of friends and family in his native Colorado.

Cerrone is in the midst of one of the more impressive runs in UFC history. He is 12-1 in his last 13 fights since November of 2013 and hasn’t tasted defeat to anyone not named Rafael dos Anjos since January of ’13 when he lost to Anthony Pettis.

An eight-fight winning streak garnered Cerrone a lightweight title shot against Dos Anjos at UFC Orlando, but RDA beat Cowboy for a second time. It took the Brazilian just 66 second to earn the first-round KO victory.

With two losses to the then 155-pound champ, Cerrone decided to move up to welterweight. The decision has proven to be a stroke of genius, as he clearly looks stronger at 170 without enduring such a dramatic weight-cutting process.

Cerrone has ripped off four consecutive wins over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Cote, Rick Story and Matt Brown. He bagged three Performance of the Night bonuses in the four wins, all of which came by finish. In fact, Cote and Story had never been KO’d before, while Brown took just his second career KO defeat.

Masvidal (31-11 MMA, 8-4 UFC) is looking for a third straight win after capturing a UD win over Ross Pearson and a first-round TKO over Jake Ellenberger. His last three losses have come by split decisions, including setbacks against Lorenz Larkin, Benson Henderson and Al Iaquinta.

Like Cerrone, Masvidal has competed at lightweight in the past. The American Top Team member owns notable victories over the likes of James Krause, Daron Cruickshank, Pat Healy, Michael Chiesa, Tim Means, Yves Edwards, Joe Lauzon and K.J. Noons.

Prediction: I like Cerrone here, but the price is fairly expensive so I’m just going with one unit on Cowboy at -160. I’m most bullish on ‘under’ 2.5 rounds for three units for the +180 return.

One more pick: Give me one unit on ‘under’ 1.5 rounds for a +120 payout in the prelims headliner – Nate Marquardt vs. Sam Alvey. These guys will just stand and trade and both have big-time KO power.

Best of luck to all with your wagers and enjoy the show from the Mile High City!

At the Gate - Saturday
By Mike Dempsey

The day has come for the richest horse race in history. A race many (including myself) scoffed at when the idea of a dozen stakeholders putting up $1 million apiece to run for $12 million was first announced.

The race is now a game changer in the industry and it has not even been run yet.

The addition of a $12 million race in January is going to change the breeding game and keep top class horses on the racetrack.

With the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in November, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) in January and the $10 million (and soon to be higher I have a hunch) Dubai World Cup (G1) in March, it is no longer a no brainer for a horse to be swept away to the breeding shed.

California Chrome would already be retired if it was not for the Pegasus, and I was surprised to hear Frank Taylor of Taylor Made Farm not rule out the possibly that California Chrome could go back into training after the breeding season.

Could we see him back on the track this fall?

It is doubtful, but the brainchild of Frank Stronach has changed the game, and some of the stars of our sport may stick around a lot longer thanks to the addition of just one race on the calendar.

The inaugural running of the Pegasus may be just a two-horse affair, but it is the right two—Horse of the Year California Chrome and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Arrogate.

The duo were separated by just a half-length at Santa Anita and the potential is there for the margin to be closer this afternoon.

The race concludes an outstanding 12-race card that features six supporting stakes races and what else is there to do today but play the ponies?

My Best Plays Report for Saturday includes my 13 strongest plays from Aqueduct and Gulfstream Park.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

GP Race 1 OClm $25,000N1X (11:30 ET)
#1 Lookin for a Kiss 4-1
#2 Homespun Hero 3-1
#11 Day of Fury 8-1
#5 Visionary Ruler 5-1

Analysis: Lookin for a Kiss stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to must miss by a neck last out at this level in his first start off a six-month layoff. The colt broke his maiden in his debut over the main track here last February and after a second against Alw-1 optional claimers mixed it up in graded stakes before hitting the bench. He figures to move forward second off the layoff for the Tomlinson barn.

Homespun Hero set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner late in a runner up finish at this level last out at seven furlongs. He set the early fractions and weakened to finish sixth two back in the Claiming Crown Jewel at nine furlongs. He earned a career top speed fig three back at this distance against Alw-1 foes at Churchill Downs in a game runner up finish. He does not look quick enough to grab the lead here, but his last win came for a $50,000 tag where he came from off the pace.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 1,2 / 1,2,5,11
TRI: 1,2 / 1,2,5,11 / 1,2,5,6,11

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:

AQU Race 8 OClm $40,000N2X (3:50 ET)
#2 Bass River Road 7-2
#12 Eye Luv Lulu 6-1
#4 Curious Cal 3-1
#8 Marriedtothemusic 5-1

Analysis: Bass River Road pressed the early pace and finished gamely to beat $25,000 state breds last out. He was claimed out of the race by the RRod barn that is 37% winners (with a +ROI) first off the claim. The gelding has won 3 of 9 on the inner track and steps into a tougher spot here but looks sharp enough to win right back.

Eye Luv Lulu faded to finish sixth last out against Alw-2 optional claimers and returns to the state bred ranks here. Three back this guy popped a 100 Beyer Speed Figure at this level in a sharp win where he drew away to win by 7 1/4 lengths. He looks capable of bouncing back here as he returns to the NY bred ranks here. The Toscano trainee has landed in the exacta in 4 of 7 trips on the inner track in his career including a runner up finish in a state bred stake last January.

Wagering
WIN: #2 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 2,12 / 2,4,8,12
TRI: 2,12 / 2,4,8,12 / 2,4,8,10,12

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:

GP Race 11 The W.L. McKnight Hcp G3 (4:50 ET)
#10 Mr Maybe 6-1
#4 Danish Dynaformer 5-1
#6 Charming Kitten 9-2
#7 Twilight Eclipse 4-1

Analysis: Mr Maybe did not get much pace to run at in the Knickerbocker (G3) over yielding ground at nine furlongs, stalking the early pace while saving ground and making a mild late bid to finish fourth. The Chad Brown trainee stretches back out to 1 1/2 miles and he won the restricted John's Call at 1 5/8 miles two back at the Spa and the Red Smith 'Cap (G3) at 1 3/8 miles back in '15. He returns here off a three-month break for a barn that is 23% winners with runners coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. Castellano picks up the call and the 6-1 morning line looks fair enough. The barn has been sending out live runners at the meet, hitting at a 27% clip.

Danish Dynaformer came with a wide run and finished gamely in a runner up finish in the Red Smith 'Cap (G3) last out at 1 3/8 miles at the Big A. He won the Singspeil (G3) at Woodbine last July at today's 1 1/2 mile distance. His win over the turf here was his maiden breaker at nine furlongs back in '15. His best puts him in the mix here and he figures to be a fair price.

Wagering
WIN: #10 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 4,10 / 4,6,7,10
TRI: 4,10 / 4,6,7,10 / 1,4,6,7,10

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Aqueduct
R1: #7 You Know I Know 12-1
R2: #3 Momma Giovanna 8-1
R3: #2 Caledonian 8-1
R6: #11 Side Tracks 10-1
R9: #12 Single Heist 8-1

Good luck today!
