Preview: Braves at Phillies
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

There is plenty of young talent on the Atlanta Braves roster that draws attention, but an unsung inexperienced player continues to pay dividends as the National League East champions play at the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in the next-to-last game of the regular season. Third baseman Johan Camargo finished 3-for-5 with his 19th homer of the season and made two outstanding plays at third base, lifting the Braves to 90 victories on the season with a 10-2 victory.

Atlanta becomes the first NL team to win 90 games after losing 90-plus contests in three or more consecutive seasons since the 1991 Braves, the “worst-to-first” team that jump-started the franchise’s run to 14 division titles, five NL pennants and a World Series championship. The Braves clinched their first playoff berth since 2013 a week ago and now are battling Colorado for home-field advantage in the NL Division Series, and matched a season high with 19 hits in Friday's victory. The Phillies continue their stumble into the offseason, losing their ninth game in a row and falling to 6-20 in September. Right fielder Odubel Herrera finished with a double and a RBI on Friday, and has collected at least one hit in seven of his past nine games.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Anibal Sanchez (7-6, 2.96 ERA) vs. Phillies RH Aaron Nola (16-6, 2.45)

It has been quite the journey for Sanchez in 2018, from spring-training signee to six weeks missed with a hamstring injury suffered running in the outfield, to a standout season and likely a starting assignment in the NL Division Series. The 34-year-old has done some of his best pitching down the stretch as the Braves surged to the division title, posting a 2.72 ERA with a .218 opponents batting average in his past seven starts. Sanchez gave up one run on four hits over five innings to beat Philadelphia on Sunday.

Nola makes the final start of his breakthrough season, one in which the 25-year-old has realized his potential and put together a campaign that in many seasons would draw serious consideration for the Cy Young Award. Nola entered the weekend tops in the NL in WAR for pitchers (9.8), second in ERA, tied for fourth in wins and fifth in hits per nine innings (6.44). Nola looks to end on a positive note after going 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA in five September starts, losing to the Braves despite giving up just two runs over six innings Sunday.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Phillies had not allowed a run at home for 17 innings before giving up four in the fourth inning Friday.

2. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman doubled three times Friday, giving him 44 two-base hits on the season.

3. Seven Philadelphia relievers allowed eight runs on 14 hits across 5 2/3 innings in the series opener.

Preview: White Sox at Twins
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

The Minnesota Twins may not be able to take much away from their second losing season in three years, but their solid play at home since late June can be one area they will remember fondly. Coming off a doubleheader sweep of the Chicago White Sox, the Twins seek a season-best fifth consecutive victory Saturday when they host the third of four games against their American League Central rival.

Jose Berrios became the first Minnesota pitcher in eight years to reach 200 strikeouts en route to a 2-1 victory in Friday's series opener, while rookie Mitch Garver returned to the starting lineup after a two-week absence due to a concussion and went 4-for-5 with a career-high six RBIs during a 12-4 rout in the nightcap. Minnesota improved to 4-1 on its season-ending seven-game homestand and moved to 47-32 at Target Field, including a 28-12 mark at the venue since June 24. Chicago (62-98), which has dropped six of its last seven to fall to 8-17 in September, needs one more win this weekend to avoid recording the fourth 100-loss season in club history. The White Sox are averaging a meager 3.3 runs this month.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Chicago, FS North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Carlos Rodon (6-7, 3.61 ERA) vs. Twins RH Kyle Gibson (9-13, 3.68)

After posting a combined 5-0 record and 1.84 ERA across July and August, Rodon fell to 0-4 with a 6.84 mark in September following Sunday's loss to the Chicago Cubs in which he gave up a season-high six runs over a season-low 2 1/3 innings. The North Carolina State product has surrendered at least four runs in four of his five starts this month while recording a 1.82 WHIP. Jorge Polanco is 4-for-11 with a homer versus Rodon, who beat Minnesota with six innings of two-run ball on Aug. 22.

Gibson has won consecutive starts since dropping each of his previous four and is coming off a strong showing Sunday in Oakland, yielding one run across 7 1/3 innings. The 30-year-old improved to 2-2 with a 3.04 ERA in four September outings as a result, although he issued three walks to increase his season total to 76 - the third-highest total in the AL. Tim Anderson is 5-for-15 with a home run versus Gibson, who is 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA in three starts against the White Sox this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Twins' 47 home wins are their most in a season since posting 53 in 2010.

2. The White Sox struck out 19 times during the doubleheader, raising their season total to a major league-high 1,570 - one shy of the all-time record set last year by Milwaukee.

3. Minnesota OF Robbie Grossman went 4-for-6 with three RBIs and two walks during the doubleheader and has three two-hit efforts over his last four games.

Preview: Tigers at Brewers
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

The Milwaukee Brewers are keeping the heat on the first-place Chicago Cubs as they look to post their sixth straight victory when they host the Detroit Tigers on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game interleague set. The Brewers defeated the Tigers 6-5 in the series opener to remain one game behind the Cubs in the National League Central race.

Milwaukee, which has clinched at least a wild-card berth, has won 20 of its last 27 games to make the Cubs sweat heading into the final weekend. Ryan Braun went deep twice on Friday for the second time in three games and has five homers and eight RBIs over his last four contests. The NL's leading hitter (.322) who is a strong MVP candidate, Christian Yelich has recorded eight blasts and 30 RBIs this month after homering in Friday's victory. The Tigers have allowed 26 runs during their three-game losing streak and are sinking to the finish with 13 setbacks in their last 18 contests.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Daniel Norris (0-5, 5.22 ERA) vs. Brewers LH Wade Miley (5-2, 2.32)

Norris is making his eighth start and 11th appearance of the campaign. The 25-year-old settled for a no-decision in his last turn as he gave up one run and six hits over five innings against Kansas City. Norris is starting on the road for the first time since Sept. 1, when he permitted two runs and one hit over 4 1/3 frames in a loss to the New York Yankees.

Miley is 3-0 over his last four starts, including two victories over the Cubs. The 31-year-old has walked fewer than two batters in seven of his last eight outings and owns a 1.18 WHIP in 15 turns with the club. Miley has posted a 6.19 ERA without recording a decision in three career starts against the Tigers, with two of the outings coming last season while he was with Baltimore.

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers rookie 2B Dawel Lugo hit his first career homer, a two-run blast, on Friday.

2. Braun has reached 20 homers for the ninth time in 12 major-league seasons.

3. Detroit LF Christin Stewart (abdomen) sat out the opener and could miss the entire series.

The New York Mets say goodbye to one of the most beloved players in franchise history on Saturday as David Wright makes the final appearance of his career in the middle contest of the team's season-ending three-game series against the visiting Miami Marlins. A seven-time All-Star, the 35-year-old Wright will start at third base and receive two at-bats from the third spot in the batting order before heading into retirement.

Wright appeared in his first game since May 27, 2016 on Friday, grounding out on the first pitch he saw as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning of New York's 8-1 loss. The team captain, who had been sidelined due to back, neck and shoulder surgeries, is the Mets' all-time leader in a plethora of categories - including hits (1,777), runs (949), walks (761), total bases (2,945) and RBIs (970). Miami began its season-ending six-game road trip by being outscored 25-10 during a three-game sweep in Washington but used a 13-hit attack on Friday to halt the slide. Miguel Rojas led the way with a double, three singles and an RBI for the Marlins, who lost three of four at home to the Mets earlier this month and are 7-10 in the season series.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, FS Florida (Miami), SNY (New York)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Marlins RH Trevor Richards (4-9, 4.66 ERA) vs. Mets LH Steven Matz (5-11, 4.14)

Richards looks to finish his rookie season with another strong outing after scattering three hits and registering nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings in a win against Cincinnati on Sunday. The 25-year-old native of Illinois has not fared well on the road, however, going 1-5 with a 5.37 ERA in 12 turns - with the lone victory coming on June 23 at Colorado. Richards lost his only previous start against the Mets as he surrendered six runs - four earned - and seven hits over five frames on Sept. 12 in New York.

Matz hopes to avoid ending the year with a 10-start winless streak after his fifth straight no-decision on Sunday at Washington - in which he yielded three runs on five hits and three walks over three innings - kept him without a victory since July 26 at Pittsburgh. The 27-year-old New Yorker has allowed more than three runs only twice during his nine-start drought but has issued eight walks over as many frames in his last two turns. Matz, who is just 1-6 in 14 outings at home this year but sports a better ERA at Citi Field (3.86) than on the road (4.46), is 3-2 with a 3.26 ERA in seven career starts against Miami - including a 1-0 record and 2.31 ERA in two meetings this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. In addition to Wright, Mets INF Jose Reyes is slated to be in Saturday's starting lineup for what likely will be the final time with the club.

2. Miami 1B Peter O'Brien has recorded three two-hit performances in his last four games and registered three RBIs in as many contests.

3. New York announced prior to Friday's opener that RHPs Robert Gsellman (80 innings pitched) and Seth Lugo (101 1/3) would not appear in the series for precautionary reasons.

Preview: Indians at Royals
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

Corey Kluber looks to finish off the regular season with a fifth straight victory as the playoff-bound Cleveland Indians visit the Kansas City Royals for the third of a four-game set between American League Central rivals Saturday. Kluber owns a career-high 20 victories, going without a loss since Aug. 25, and will likely get the call when the Indians take on Houston in Game 1 of the AL Division Series next Friday.

Cleveland has reached 90 victories three straight seasons for the first time since 1999-2001 after winning five of its last seven and has been especially dominant in the division (48-26). Josh Donaldson belted a grand slam in Friday’s 14-6 victory for the Indians on Friday and is 11-for-29 over his last nine contests after going 2-for-15 in his first five games following the trade with Toronto on Aug. 31. The Royals saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with Friday’s setback, but second baseman Whit Merrifield extended his hitting streak to 18 games - during which he is 24-for-77. Kansas City, which has dropped 11 of 17 games against Cleveland this season, is 35-39 against AL Central opponents and has 57 victories - its fewest since going 56-106 in 2005.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Indians RH Corey Kluber (20-7, 2.83 ERA) vs. Royals RH Jakob Junis (8-12, 4.42)

Kluber allowed four hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings to beat the Chicago White Sox on Monday and has limited opponents to three or fewer runs in six of his last eight starts. The 32-year-old Alabama native has struck out at least 10 in three of his last four starts after not being able to accomplish that feat in 16 outings over the previous three months. Jorge Bonifacio is 4-for-8 versus Kluber, who is 3-1 with 3.24 ERA in four starts against the Royals this season - 12-7, 3.02 lifetime.

Junis has registered three consecutive no-decisions since opening his September account with seven scoreless innings in a 5-1 victory at Cleveland. The 26-year-old Illinois native managed two quality starts in his last three trips to the mound but has served up five homers - three against Minnesota on Sept. 16. Francisco Lindor is 7-for-13 with three homers, two doubles and nine RBIs against Junis, who lost his other two starts against the Indians this season while permitting 13 runs (12 earned) over 11 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. Kansas City C Salvador Perez is 9-for-27, including an RBI in each of his last three contests, during a seven-game hitting streak

2. Cleveland INF Erik Gonzalez, who was hit in the head by a pitch Wednesday, will not be available this weekend.

3. Royals OF Brian Goodwin launched a grand slam Friday and boasts seven RBIs in his last five contests.

Preview: Astros at Orioles (Game 2)
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

The Houston Astros have a chance to match - or eclipse - the franchise record for wins in a season when they continue their four-game series at the Baltimore Orioles with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Astros, who open the American League Division Series versus Cleveland on Friday, notched their 101st win with a 2-1 victory on Friday night.

Josh Reddick homered and Marwin Gonzalez delivered a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning as Houston improved to a major league-best 55-23 on the road and beat the Orioles for the 12th time in the past 13 meetings. Astros right-hander Justin Verlander, the AL leader with a career-high 280 strikeouts, goes for his 17th win when he opposes Dylan Bundy, who is trying to avoid his 17th loss in Game 1 of the twin bill. Baltimore set a dubious record in defeat, becoming the sixth team since 1900 - and first since Detroit in 2003 - to lose 113 games in a season. Adam Jones, likely playing in his final series with the team, accounted for the Orioles' lone run with his second RBI double in as many games.

TV: 7:35 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), MASN (Baltimore)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros LH Dallas Keuchel (12-11, 3.75 ERA) vs. Orioles RH Yefry Ramírez (1-7, 6.07)

Keuchel had a stretch of nearly two months earlier this season when he allowed three runs or fewer in 10 of 11 starts, but he has permitted at least five runs in three of his eight turns since. He picked up the win with five innings of three-run ball at Toronto on Monday, the sixth straight outing he failed to pitch beyond six innings. Tim Beckham is 5-for-9 with a double and triple off Keuchel.

Ramirez has gone more than two months since posting his lone career win against Boston on July 24 in his first start after the All-Star break. Following four consecutive relief appearances, he rejoined the rotation on Sept. 15 and was a hard-luck loser against the Chicago White Sox, pitching 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball. Ramirez was hit hard in his next at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 21, giving up six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros RH Roberto Osuna has converted all 12 save chances since joining the team.

2. Orioles 1B Chris Davis, batting .168 and mired in a 1-for-37 slump over his last 10 games, is expected to sit out the series.

3. Gonzalez has reached safely in 11 straight games.

Preview: Nationals at Rockies
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

After losing two months of the season due to a broken foot, David Dahl has the streaking Colorado Rockies on the verge of the first division title in franchise history. Dahl has homered in five consecutive games for the Rockies, who aim for their ninth straight victory when they host the Washington Nationals on Saturday.

Charlie Blackmon, Ian Desmond and Chris Iannetta also homered in Friday’s 5-2 win as Colorado clinched a postseason berth and maintained its one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West with two to play. Dahl is batting .316 with eight home runs and 24 RBIs this month while Trevor Story is 6-for-18 with two doubles, one triple, two homers and three RBI in his last five games after missing five with right elbow soreness. The Rockies can move closer to clinching the division title with a win on Saturday over Washington, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Trea Turner tripled in two runs in the series opener and the Nationals outhit Colorado 12-8 but went just 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN2 (Washington), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

Strasburg needed 100 pitches to get through four innings against Miami on Monday, allowing one run on three hits and four walks. The three-time All-Star is looking to reach the 10-win mark for the fifth consecutive season and sixth time in his career. Blackmon is 7-for-14 with one homer against Strasburg, who is 4-4 with a 4.19 ERA in nine career starts versus Colorado – including a 1-3 record and 7.20 mark in four outings at Coors Field.

After posting a 7.88 ERA over his first four starts this month, Gray turned in a stellar outing against Philadelphia on Monday as he gave up one run and four hits over seven innings of a 10-1 victory. The 26-year-old native of Oklahoma owns a 7-3 record and 4.50 ERA in 15 starts at Coors Field this season. Matt Wieters is 4-for-9 with a home run against Gray, who is 0-2 with a 6.48 ERA in three career starts versus Washington.

Preview: Diamondbacks at Padres
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres, who square off again at Petco Park on Saturday, have played two marathon games this season and split the decisions. Freddy Galvis' run-scoring double in the 15th inning on Friday gave the host Padres a 3-2 victory in the series opener, exacting a form of revenge for a 16-inning loss at Arizona on July 8.

The hot-hitting Galvis recorded two hits for his seventh multi-hit performance in 12 games and is a torrid 22-for-50 during that stretch. San Diego's Hunter Renfroe was scratched from the starting lineup due to illness but belted a game-tying, pinch-hit homer with two outs in the 12th inning after Arizona moved ahead in the top of the frame. The Diamondbacks continued their late-season swoon with their 14th loss in 19 games and also have dropped nine of their last 11 road contests. Arizona slugger Paul Goldschmidt, who went 1-for-6 in the series opener, is in a 2-for-22 funk over his last six games and has registered just one RBI without a homer over his last 18 contests.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Diamondbacks RH Zack Godley (14-11, 4.75 ERA) vs. Padres RH Jacob Nix (2-4, 6.81)

Godley has lost four straight starts, posting a horrific 7.64 ERA during that stretch. The 28-year-old began his streak of losses against the Padres, when he gave up four runs and two hits over five innings on Sept. 3. Godley is 2-1 with a 5.24 ERA in five appearances (four starts) versus San Diego this season and 3-4 with a 5.40 ERA in 14 career meetings (10 starts).

Nix is making his ninth major-league start and has yet to issue more than two walks in any of his outings. The 22-year-old was torched by Arizona on Aug. 16, when he recorded just two outs while giving up five runs and five hits. Nix lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his last turn as he gave up six runs and six hits over 2 1/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres rookie C Francisco Mejia struck out three times in six hitless at-bats in the series opener and is just 4-for-30 over his last 10 contests.

2. Arizona INF Eduardo Escobar went 2-for-7 on Friday to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

3. San Diego RHP Brett Kennedy (knee) underwent surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training next year.

Preview: Athletics at Angels
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

With their postseason status now set, the Oakland Athletics can play loose in their final two games of the regular season. Oakland looks to bounce back from its series-opening loss when it takes on the host Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.

The Athletics, who will be visiting the New York Yankees for the American League wild-card game on Wednesday, have been alternating wins and losses for a week as they attempted to gain home-field advantage for the contest. Oakland registered only five hits in Friday's 8-5 setback, with three coming during its five-run rally in the eighth inning. The Angels are finishing the campaign strong as they've followed a five-game losing streak with four consecutive victories. Mike Trout and Taylor Ward homered while Japanese rookie Shohei Ohtani went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Los Angeles, which was outscored 31-3 in back-to-back losses in Oakland last week.

TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, MLB Network, NBCS California (Oakland), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Trevor Cahill (6-4, 3.91 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (8-9, 3.91)

Cahill is expected to make his second start following a hiatus caused by a back injury and 21st overall in an injury-riddled 2018 season. The 30-year-old Californian lasted only 3 1/3 innings against Minnesota on Sunday as he was tagged for five runs - three earned - and five hits en route to a loss. Cahill, who has worked a total of six frames in his last two outings, is 5-3 with a 2.44 ERA in 12 career appearances (11 starts) versus the Angels - including a no-decision at Los Angeles on Aug. 12 in which he yielded four runs and seven hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Skaggs is coming off his second start after missing over a month with an adductor strain, a loss at Houston on Sunday in which he surrendered four runs and five hits over 2 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old, who also hails from the Golden State, made his fourth start of the year against the Athletics on Sept. 18 in his initial return from the injury and issued two walks without yielding a hit in three scoreless frames at Oakland. Skaggs is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA versus the Athletics this season after going 0-4 with a 6.26 ERA in five starts prior to 2018.

WALK-OFFS

1. Trout needs two home runs to match the career high of 41 he set in 2015.

2. Oakland 2B Jed Lowrie has gone 6-for-20 during his four-game hitting streak and is three RBIs away from reaching 100 for the first time in his career.

3. Ohtani is riding a four-game hitting streak during which he is 7-for-16 with two homers and six RBIs.

Preview: Rangers at Mariners
Gracenote
Sep 29, 2018

Robinson Cano stroked a season-high four hits on Friday and is in line to finish with a batting average of .300 or better for the ninth time in his career. Cano looks to improve his .304 mark when the Seattle Mariners host the Texas Rangers on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series.

Cano was batting .296 before his stellar outing on Friday in which he plated two runs to help Seattle register a 12-6 victory. Cameron Maybin collected a career high-tying four RBIs while slugger Nelson Cruz contributed a run-scoring double for his 97th RBI as he attempts to reach 100 for the fourth time in the majors. Texas veteran Adrian Beltre notched two RBIs on Friday to boost his career total to 1,706, snapping a tie with Hall-of-Famer Frank Thomas on the all-time list. Elvis Andrus recorded his second three-hit performance of the month but is batting just .213 in September.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers RH Adrian Sampson (0-2, 4.96 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (11-6, 3.85)

Sampson is making his fifth appearance (fourth start) with Texas and has served up six homers in just 16 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old, who is from the Seattle area, is pitching at Safeco Field for the first time despite receiving one opportunity to perform on the road as a member of the Mariners in 2016. "I'm excited about it," Sampson told reporters. "I just need to take care of business. When I get out there, I just need to put blinders on, but that's how I have been pitching lately, with tunnel vision."

Paxton is making his second start since missing two-plus weeks due to pneumonia. The 29-year-old is one strikeout away from becoming the sixth pitcher in franchise history to reach the 200 plateau. Paxton is 2-4 with a 4.98 ERA in 13 career starts against the Rangers and has a 7.00 ERA in two no-decisions this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Rangers C Robinson Chirinos hit a two-run homer on Friday for his first blast since Sept. 2.

2. Seattle SS Jean Segura departed Friday's game after the second inning - manager Scott Servais said he was pulled because he didn't like his effort running the bases - while 2B-CF Dee Gordon (foot) missed his third straight contest.

3. Texas purchased the contract of LHP Brandon Mann, who lives in Seattle, from Triple-A Round Rock in order to have another arm for the season-ending weekend.

PREDICTION: Mariners 7, Rangers 5
