Preview: Mariners at Astros
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The Seattle Mariners have scored 13 runs while beating Houston on back-to-back nights and look to continue their offensive production when they visit the Astros on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series. Seattle has been sparked by new leadoff hitter Mitch Haniger, who has gone 6-for-9 with a homer, four doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored in the two wins.

Denard Span also is doing damage while hitting second in the lineup, going 5-for-7 with one homer, one triple, four RBIs and three runs scored in the series. Nelson Cruz delivered a tiebreaking two-run double during a three-run eighth inning as Seattle posted a 5-2 triumph on Friday. Houston, which has dropped three of its last five, leads second-place Oakland by 4 1/2 games in the American League West while the Mariners have crept within six. Marwin Gonzalez went 3-for-4 on Friday while Alex Bregman and Tony Kemp recorded RBI hits to account for the Astros' two runs.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners LH Wade LeBlanc (6-2, 3.81 ERA) vs. Astros RH Charlie Morton (12-2, 2.81)

LeBlanc is winless over his last three starts but pitched well last time out as he gave up one run and two hits over 6 1/3 innings against Texas. The 34-year-old was pounded for seven runs and 10 hits over 4 1/3 frames in a loss to Houston on Aug. 1 and has posted a 10.22 ERA in four meetings (two starts) this season. LeBlanc is winless on the road this year as he has gone 0-1 with a 4.18 ERA in 11 appearances (eight starts).

Morton settled for a no-decision against San Francisco in his last turn despite giving up one run and three hits over seven innings. The 34-year-old fanned eight batters in the contest to raise his strikeout total to a career-best 167 - four better than his 2017 count. Morton is 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts against Seattle this year and 3-2 with a 2.95 ERA in six career outings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros SS Carlos Correa (back) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and went 0-for-3 with a walk on Friday while INF J.D. Davis was optioned to Triple-A Fresno.

2. Seattle C Mike Zunino is hitless with five strikeouts in nine at-bats in the series after going 5-for-8 with three homers over his previous two games.

3. Houston CF Jake Marisnick (groin) departed Friday's contest in the seventh inning and will be re-evaluated on Saturday.

Preview: Cardinals at Royals
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The St. Louis Cardinals are hanging around in the National League playoff race, and a couple more days on the opposite side of the state should help their cause. The Cardinals will try to beat up on the host Kansas City Royals for a second straight night when the intrastate rivals continue their three-game interleague series Saturday.

St. Louis is 14-9 under interim manager Mike Shildt and 7-2 in August to stay within 3 1/2 games of the second NL wild-card. Red-hot Matt Carpenter hit his 32nd homer in the Cardinals’ 7-0 win in Friday’s series opener, giving St. Louis four straight wins at Kauffman Stadium. Three pitchers combined on a seven-hitter for the Cardinals, whose revamped bullpen has thrown 13 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. The Royals (35-80) have lost seven of their last eight games and have the second-worst record in the majors – a half-game ahead of Baltimore.

TV: 7:15 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Kansas City

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Jack Flaherty (5-6, 3.27 ERA) vs. Royals LH Danny Duffy (7-10, 4.70)

After losing two straight starts, Flaherty returned to his dominant form Sunday to win at Pittsburgh. The 22-year-old rookie struck out seven and allowed three hits over six scoreless frames. He has recorded at least seven strikeouts in four straight starts and leads NL rookies with 118 in 96 1/3 innings.

Duffy has endured an up-and-down season. The 29-year-old had a three-start stretch in July in which he allowed one run over 20 innings, but he has been hit hard in two of his last three outings - surrendering 13 runs in those contests. Duffy is 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA in three starts against St. Louis.

WALK-OFFS

1. Carpenter is 11-for-34 with six homers during an eight-game hitting streak and has reached base in a career-high 28 consecutive contests.

2. Cardinals INF/OF Yairo Munoz left Friday’s game with a sprained right wrist and is day-to-day.

3. The Royals are 16-40 at home and on pace to eclipse the franchise record of 51 home losses set in 1998.

Preview: Dodgers at Rockies
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

The Colorado Rockies may be without All-Star slugger Nolan Arenado on Saturday, when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers for the third contest of their four-game series. Arenado departed Friday's 5-4 victory with right shoulder soreness and said afterward that he hopes to be able to play on Saturday.

Ironically, Ryan McMahon replaced Arenado as the third baseman and hit the decisive two-run homer in the seventh inning as the Rockies broke a six-game home losing streak against Los Angeles. DJ LeMahieu also hit a two-run shot - his first homer since June 28 - as Colorado won for just the third time in 10 games. The Dodgers remain in a tie for first place in the National League West - 2 1/2 games ahead of the Rockies - and are just 5-7 over their last dozen contests. Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy each had three hits, with the latter belting his team-best 26th homer of the season.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Dodgers RH Walker Buehler (5-4, 3.63 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (10-7, 3.04)

Buehler dropped three straight decisions before allowing two runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings in a win over Houston in his last turn. The 24-year-old is limiting opposing hitters to a .227 average and has struck out 79 in 74 1/3 frames. Beuhler has posted a 3.75 ERA in two no-decisions against the Rockies this season and owns a 5.71 ERA in six career appearances (four in relief).

Freeland was superb while beating Pittsburgh in his last turn as he gave up two hits over seven scoreless innings. The 25-year-old has fared well at Coors Field, going 7-2 with a 2.18 ERA in 10 home turns this season. Freeland lost to the Dodgers on May 23, when he gave up three runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings, and is 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA in five career starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Dodgers RHP Kenley Jansen (irregular heartbeat) went on the 10-day disabled list, but the 30-year-old closer is expected to miss at least four weeks, while ambidextrous P Pat Venditte was recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

2. Colorado RHP Adam Ottavino worked a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save on Friday in place of beleaguered closer Wade Davis, who has allowed eight runs in 2 1/3 frames over his last four appearances.

3. Los Angeles 3B Justin Turner has two hits in both games of the series and is 8-for-20 during his five-game hitting streak.

Aug 11, 2018

The Philadelphia Phillies have been blanked in back-to-back games and look to rediscover their offense when they visit the San Diego Padres on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Philadelphia has recorded just one extra-base hit among 12 hits during the two-game slumber and left 10 runners on base in Friday's 2-0 loss.

The Phillies, who are tied with Atlanta for first place in the National League East, are just 1-3 during their six-game road trip that began with three against Arizona. Slugger Rhys Hoskins was hitless in four at-bats against the Padres and is 0-for-20 over his last six contests. Former Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis continued to torment his ex-teammates by going 2-for-3 with an RBI on Friday and is 8-for-14 with five RBIs in this season's four meetings. Austin Hedges added a solo blast and is 16-for-45 with five homers and eight RBIs over his last 13 contests.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Aaron Nola (12-3, 2.37 ERA) vs. Padres RH Walker Lockett (0-2, 9.28)

Nola is winless over his last four starts as he takes another shot at setting a personal best for victories. The 25-year-old All-Star ranks third in the NL in both ERA and WHIP (0.99) and can bolster his Cy Young Award candidacy with a strong finish. Nola is 1-2 with a 3.21 ERA and 30 strikeouts over 28 innings in four career starts against the Padres.

Lockett will make his fourth career appearance and third as a starter. The 24-year-old lost to the Chicago Cubs in his last outing as he gave up five runs and nine hits over five innings. Lockett, a fourth-round pick in 2012, was just 4-9 with a 4.92 ERA in 19 starts at Triple-A El Paso this season.

WALK-OFFS

1. Padres LF Wil Myers (foot) is slated to be activated on Monday, the first day he is eligible to come off the 10-day disabled list.

2. Philadelphia acquired 1B Justin Bour and cash considerations from Miami for LHP McKenzie Mills, activated INF J.P. Crawford (hand) from the 10-day DL and designated RHP Jake Thompson for assignment.

3. San Diego recalled Jacob Nix, who pitched six scoreless innings in his major-league debut on Friday, from El Paso and designated fellow RHP Phil Hughes for assignment.

Preview: Pirates at Giants
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

Stuck in neutral for much of the season, the San Francisco Giants are running out of time to make a postseason push. Currently seven games out of a National League wild-card spot, the Giants are hoping to build on a rare offensive outburst when they continue their four-game series on Saturday against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates.

San Francisco collected 16 hits and snapped a three-game losing streak with Friday’s 13-10 victory as Buster Posey went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Alen Hanson added three hits and drove in three runs. Andrew McCutchen delivered a solo homer against his former team, but the Giants received a scare when Evan Longoria exited in the seventh inning after being hit by a pitch on his left shoulder. Pittsburgh saw its three-game winning streak come to an end and fell five games back in the NL wild-card race despite recording 17 hits, including a grand slam by Francisco Cervelli, who finished with three hits and five RBIs. Josh Bell added three hits and new arrival Adeiny Hechavarria went 2-for-2 with a solo homer in his second game with the Pirates.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Pirates RH Trevor Williams (9-8, 3.88 ERA) vs. Giants LH Ty Blach (6-6, 4.28)

Williams had his streak of 21 1/3 innings without allowing a run come to an end last Sunday, when he gave up two runs over five innings in a 2-1 loss to St. Louis. “He got them to put the ball in play and forced soft contact,” manager Clint Hurdle told reporters. “I thought he pitched a really good ballgame.” The 26-year-old native of San Diego made two starts against the Giants last season, posting a 2.25 ERA across 12 innings.

Blach will move from the bullpen to make a spot start as manager Bruce Bochy looks to give his rotation an extra day of rest. The 27-year-old native of Colorado started on Opening Day in place of an injured Madison Bumgarner and has appeared in 33 games this season, including 12 starts. Blach, who is facing Pittsburgh for the first time, owns a 3.70 ERA in 14 road games (six starts) compared to a 4.89 mark in 19 home games (six starts).

WALK-OFFS

1. San Francisco 1B Brandon Belt (knee) will begin his minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

2. Pirates 3B David Freese is 28-for-77 with five home runs and 21 RBIs in his last 26 games.

3. The Giants purchased the contract of Casey Kelly from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned fellow RHP Derek Law to the River Cats.

Preview: Athletics at Angels
Gracenote
Aug 11, 2018

Things started off well for the Oakland Athletics in their series opener against the Los Angeles Angels but ended quite differently. Oakland looks to bounce back from its second loss on three games when it visits the Angels on Saturday for the middle contest of the three-game set.

Matt Chapman belted a solo homer and Khris Davis launched a two-run shot as the Athletics held a 3-0 lead after one inning before going on to suffer a one-run defeat. Davis has belted 12 homers in 19 games since the All-Star break and is 10 RBIs shy of reaching the century mark for the third straight season for Oakland, which holds a 1 1/2-game lead over Seattle for the second wild card in the American League. Kole Calhoun hit a two-run homer in the third frame and Justin Upton swatted one in the sixth for the Angels, who won their fourth straight contest after placing star center fielder Mike Trout on the 10-day disabled list with right wrist inflammation. The 27-year-old, who hasn't played since Aug. 1, received a cortisone shot at the beginning of the week but still felt pain several days later.

TV: 9:07 p.m. ET, NBCS California (Oakland), FS West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Athletics RH Edwin Jackson (3-2, 2.87 ERA) vs. Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (8-7, 3.34)

Jackson has won back-to-back starts after being tagged for five runs in 4 1/3 innings at Texas on July 25 in his worst outing of the season, allowing one unearned run and eight hits over 12 frames in the victories. The 34-year-old journeyman has yet to win on the road this year, going 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in four turns. Jackson is 4-4 with a 3.83 ERA and one complete game in 12 career appearances (nine starts) against the Angels.

Skaggs is expected to return from an adductor strain that landed him on the disabled list and make his first start since July 31. The 27-year-old Californian took the loss in that outing as he was battered for 10 runs on eight hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings at Tampa Bay. Skaggs entered the season 0-4 with a 6.26 ERA in five career starts against Oakland but has won both of his turns in 2018, allowing two unearned runs while registering 13 strikeouts against one walk over 13 1/3 frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Angels recalled RHP Akeel Morris from Triple-A Salt Lake to replace Trout on the roster.

2. Oakland added Fernando Rodney to the active roster on Friday, a day after acquiring him from Minnesota, and designated fellow RHP Chris Hatcher for assignment.

3. Los Angeles released INF Luis Valbuena, who batted .199 with nine homers and 33 RBIs in 96 games this season before being designated for assignment on Sunday.

Close Shaves

The Oakland Athletics easily lead the way in one-run games, winning 22 of 31 decided by one run. It's a bit of a surprise to some that the Seattle Mariners, as well as the A's, are in contention in the American League West. A major reason for their success has been their ability to win the close games. It also helps that they have a stud assigned to ninth-inning duties when they have the lead. All-Star closers Edwin Diaz and Blake Treinen aren't coughing up the leads when the manager entrusts them to close out ball games. The teams on this list with rough records in one-run games have had a bullpen in flux, and closers either struggling or suffering injuries at various points this season.

2018 One-Run Games Record (through 8/9)

Team Record (Win % - GR)
Oakland 22-9 (.710)
Seattle 28-14 (.667)
Atlanta 15-8 (.652)
Philadelphia 20-11 (.645)
Boston 18-10 (.643)

Team Record (Win % - GR)
Cincinnati 8-18 (.308)
Minnesota 9-19 (.321)
N.Y. Mets 10-21 (.323)
Baltimore 11-22 (.333)
Chicago White Sox 10-20 (.333)

Looking Ahead

Saturday, Aug. 11

The Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros battle each other in a key American League West contest. The M's have won three of their past 10 games heading into Friday's tilt, and they're just 2-5 in their past seven on the road against right-handed starting pitching. They're also just 3-8 in the past 11 road outings. Perhaps Wade LeBlanc will snap them out of their mini funk, as the M's are 19-7 over his past 26 starts and 9-1 in his past 10 when working on four days of rest. However, be careful, as Seattle has dropped each of his past five assignments on the road when facing a team with a winning overall mark. The Astros entered play Friday with six wins over their past eight contests. They're 41-20 in the past 61 against American League West foes while going 5-2 in the past seven against winning sides. Houston has also picked up victories in seven of Charlie Morton's past 10 starts, including six of his past eight at Minute Maid Park. The Astros are just 1-4 in the past five home starts by Morton against teams with a winning record, and they're just 1-6 over the past seven with Morton working on four days of rest.

Total bettors have been pounding the 'under' in LeBlanc's starts, as well as Morton's outings. The under is 4-1 in the past five outings by LeBlanc while going 3-1-1 in his past five inside the division. The under is 6-2 in Morton's past eight appearances while going 11-5 in his past 16 at home. The under has also hit in four of Morton's past five starts against the M's.

The Indians and White Sox had a pitcher's duel at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday night, and Trevor Bauer and James Shields look to duplicate the success of their predecessors. Cleveland has won five straight outings by Bauer, and they're 5-0 over Bauer's past five inside the division, too. They're also 6-1 in the past seven against teams with a losing record, while the Indians are 4-1 in Bauer's past five starts against the Pale Hose. The under is also 9-4 in Bauer's past 13 appearances against Chicago, while the under has hit in each of Big Game James' past four outings against the Tribe. For Chicago, they're a dismal 3-13 over Shields' past 16 against winning sides, and they're just 6-15 over his past 21 overall.

Cubs LHP Jon Lester was 12-2 with a 2.58 ERA in 19 starts before the All-Star break, but he is just 0-2 with an 8.53 ERA in four outings since the break with the opposition hitting .342 against him over the past 19 innings. He'll face the Nationals on Saturday. The Cubs are 10-2 over Lester's past 12 vs. NL East, and they're 17-5 in his past 22 at home against teams with a winning overall record.

Weather Report

The O's have been so poor this season that they're likely praying for rain. Their prayers might be answered, as there is a 45 percent chance of thunderstorms or greater from first pitch through 7pm ET. The Rangers and Yankees will also be watching the radar, as there is a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms all morning, tapering off to just 40 percent by 5pm ET. It wouldn't be shocking to see a postponement in this one.

Those are the only trouble spots as far as precipitation is concerned. Winds will affect the Phillies and Padres, as a breeze from 10-13 mph will be blowing left to right at Petco Park. The winds will again be blowing out to straightaway center field at AT&T Park in San Francisco from 13-16 mph, affecting the total outcome in Pirates-Giants.

Sunday, Aug. 12

CC Sabathia will face Martin Perez in a battle of southpaws on Sunday. Sabathia is coming off a 12-strikeout performance on the road against the White Sox last time out, but he hasn't won in five straight outings dating back to July 4. The good news is that he has just one loss over the past five starts. The bad news is he has walked 17 batters over the past 30 innings across his past six appearances, and he has no quality starts since that Independence Day victory against the Braves.

Orioles RHP Alex Cobb has had a forgettable first season in Charm City, going 3-14 with a 5.55 ERA and 1.51 WHIP across 116 2/3 innings over his 21 starts. One of the Boston native's wins has come against the Red Sox, a rare quality start and road win back at Fenway Park on May 18. In that game he allowed just three earned runs over 6 1/3 innings, but he also allowed 10 hits. Cobb has been better lately, however, turning in three straight quality starts. He hasn't had four straight quality starts since July 8-26 when he was a member of the Tampa Bay Rays.

Giants RHP Dereck Rodriguez has been quite the find for San Francisco, and he is showing no signs of slowing down. He'll take the ball on Sunday against the visiting Pirates, and he has been even better at home. Rodriguez has posted a 3-0 record, 1.99 ERA and 34 strikeouts over 40 2/3 innings across six starts and one relief appearance at home while the opposition is batting just .196 against him at AT&T Park. He hasn't yet faced the Pirates. The Bucs entered Friday's game on a three-game winning streak, but just 11-19 across their 30 games against American League West opponents.

Cubs LHP Cole Hamels will make his Wrigley Field debut on Sunday against the Nationals after a pair of success road outings. He has posted a 2-0 record, 0.82 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 11 innings in two road outings as a member of the Cubs. He has yet to serve up a homer while wearing a Cubs uniform, an issue which plagued him as a member of the Texas Rangers. Hamels allowed 23 long balls over 114 1/3 innings in 20 starts for the Rangers earlier this season. All-Star Max Scherzer has been phenomenal on the road, going 8-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 11 starts this season while striking out 93 batters in just 72 innings while the opposition is hitting just .182 overall against him this season.

Weather Report

The rains will stick around for Sunday in Balto., as there is a 45 percent or greater chance of thunderstorms from first pitch through the early evening. Since these teams are division rivals, it wouldn't be shocking to see this game made up at a later date. The Rangers-Yankees game will also have the same weather forecast, although it looks like there is a window around 5pm where the weather could taper off enough to allow for the game to be played.

Like Saturday, those are the only trouble spots for precipitation. While the winds will be down to 9-12 mph at Petco on Sunday, winds will again be the story in San Francisco. There will be a jetstream blowing out to straightaway center field from 13-16 mph for Pirates-Giants.

For the Sunday night game, the Nationals and Cubs will see the wind blowing in at Wrigley Field, although it will be relatively tranquil at 6-9 mph from straightaway center field. The conditions will be neutral at best, but don't expect a slugfest.
