Preview: Angels at Indians
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

Shohei Ohtani looks to follow up his best offensive night in the majors with another big effort when the Los Angeles Angels visit the Cleveland Indians for the middle contest of a three-game set Saturday night. Ohtani, a 24-year-old rookie from Japan, registered season highs of four hits and two homers in Friday’s 7-4 victory as the Angels snapped a four-game slide overall and won for the first time in 11 contests at Cleveland.

Ohtani, who batted just .203 in July, pushed his season totals to 11 homers along with 28 RBIs and Los Angeles All-Star center fielder Mike Trout could rejoin him in the lineup Saturday after missing the last two games with a bruised right wrist. Ohtani also homered against Saturday’s scheduled starter Corey Kluber earlier in the season and Felix Pena is slated to get the call for the Angels after suffering through his worst start of the season last week. The American League Central-leading Indians lost for the third time in eight games Friday and the first time in August after taking an early 3-2 lead. Newly acquired center fielder Leonys Martin recorded a solo homer and an RBI single for Cleveland in the setback and is 7-for-18 during a five-game hitting streak - the first three coming with Detroit before Tuesday’s trade.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Felix Pena (1-2, 5.23 ERA) vs. Indians RH Corey Kluber (13-6, 2.79)

Pena could not get out of the first inning Sunday against Seattle, allowing seven runs and six hits while retiring just one batter before being pulled. The 28-year-old Dominican native had permitted two or fewer runs in five of his previous six starts this year but completed more than 5 1/3 innings just once in that span. Pena, who has yielded just one run over 9 1/3 innings on the road in 2018, faces the Indians for the first time in his career.

Kluber snapped out of a funk with 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball Sunday at Detroit for his first victory since July 2, improving to 2-3 in his past five decisions. The 32-year-old, who permitted two runs over seven innings against the Angels in a no-decision April 4, owned an 8-2 record and 2.02 ERA through May before going 5-4 with a 3.88 mark in the past two months. Justin Upton owns three homers versus Kluber, who is 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in six career starts against the Angels.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Indians activated LHP Andrew Miller (knee) from the disabled list Friday. He had one strikeout in a scoreless inning.

2. Los Angeles 1B/DH Albert Pujols sits two doubles from tying Honus Wagner (640) for ninth on baseball’s all-time list.

3. Cleveland 3B Jose Ramirez, the AL Player of the Month in July, is 8-for-16 with two homers and five RBIs in his last four games.

Preview: Orioles at Rangers
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

The Texas Rangers have scored 28 runs while winning the first two contests of their four-game series against the visiting Baltimore Orioles and look to continue the assault on Saturday. The Rangers slugged three homers in each of the victories, including Friday's 11-3 rout that followed a season-best 17-run performance.

Rougned Odor has homered in both games of the series and belted his third career grand slam on Friday as the Rangers won for the sixth time in seven contests. Joey Gallo and Robinson Chirinos also went deep and Elvis Andrus extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 14 games. Baltimore is a major league-worst 13-42 on the road, and Friday's loss was its 13th in its last 14 away from home. Mark Trumbo is riding a modest six-game hitting streak for the Orioles and is two hits away from reaching 1,000 for his career.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (7-9, 4.53 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Mike Minor (7-6, 4.73)

Bundy served up three homers in each of his last two starts but went 1-0 with a no-decision. The 25-year-old defeated Tampa Bay in his last turn as he gave up three runs and four hits to go with seven strikeouts. Bundy is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA in four career appearances (two starts) against Texas and has shut down Adrian Beltre (0-for-7).

Minor struck out eight while beating Houston in his last turn as he gave up two runs, four hits and one walk. The 30-year-old has allowed fewer than three runs in six of his last eight turns and has given up four or fewer hits on five occasions during that span. Minor was roughed up for six runs - five earned - and four hits in 2 2/3 innings while losing his lone career start against the Orioles on July 15 and has posted a 7.50 ERA in four appearances.

WALK-OFFS

1. Odor is 3-for-6 with two homers, seven RBIs, five runs scored and five walks over the first two games of the series and is a scorching 21-for-52 with six homers and 14 RBIs since the All-Star break.

2. Baltimore SS Tim Beckham is 5-for-9 in the series and has recorded six multi-hit performances over his last 13 games.

3. Gallo has homered in back-to-back contests and gone deep seven times in his last 14 appearances.

Preview: Giants at Diamondbacks
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

The Arizona Diamondbacks aim for their sixth win in eight contests when they continue their four-game set against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Saturday. After losing the series opener, the Diamondbacks posted a 6-3 victory on Friday to pull into a tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West.

Arizona fell behind early but quickly took control with a five-run rally in the first inning that was highlighted by Paul Goldschmidt's 200th career home run, which put him within 24 of tying Luis Gonzalez for first place on the franchise list. David Peralta has been on fire in the series, going 7-for-9 with a double and a solo homer. The Giants registered nine hits on Friday, but none went for extra bases as the team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. Buster Posey went 2-for-2 but was removed following his third-inning single to be watched for concussion symptoms after taking a foul ball off his mask in the opening frame.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Andrew Suarez (4-6, 4.11 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Clay Buchholz (4-1, 2.65)

Suarez halted his winless streak at four starts on Sunday despite yielding four runs and eight hits in six innings against Milwaukee. The 25-year-old Floridian rookie went 0-2 during his drought but gave up three runs or fewer in three of the outings. Suarez lost to the Diamondbacks in his major-league debut on April 11, when he surrendered four runs in 5 1/3 frames, before allowing one run over six innings in a win at Arizona on June 29.

Buchholz has won three straight starts - all on the road - and four consecutive decisions as he notched the victory at San Diego on Sunday despite giving up three runs on six hits and three walks over 5 2/3 innings. The 33-year-old Texan, who issued a season-high three walks against the Padres, has yielded fewer than three runs in seven of his nine turns this year. Buchholz has posted a 2.57 ERA without recording a decision in two career starts against the Giants, including an outing at San Francisco on June 6 in which he allowed two runs over six frames.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Diamondbacks hope to have manager Torey Lovullo back in the dugout as he was under the weather for Friday's contest, with bench coach Jerry Narron assuming the duties in his place.

2. San Francisco signed OF Cesar Puello, who appeared in 34 games with Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Angels last season, to a minor-league contract.

3. Arizona activated LHP Andrew Chafin from the paternity list and optioned OF Chris Owings to Triple-A Reno.

Preview: Tigers at Athletics
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

The Oakland Athletics vie for their fifth consecutive victory when they host the Detroit Tigers on Saturday for the middle contest of their three-game set. The Athletics outlasted the Tigers in the series opener as a newcomer provided the key hit in the 13th inning of a 1-0 triumph.

Ramon Laureano was recalled from the minors prior to the game and was hitless in his first four at-bats while starting in center field in his major-league debut before delivering an RBI single as Oakland improved to 4-0 on its eight-game homestand. The 24-year-old Dominican was hitting .297 with 14 homers and 35 RBIs over 64 contests with Triple-A Nashville before being promoted. Jose Iglesias and Nicholas Castellanos each recorded two of the six hits produced by the Tigers, who were coming off a 3-2 homestand. Iglesias has hit safely in six of his last seven contests while Castellanos had gone 1-for-24 over his previous six games.

TV: 9:05 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Jordan Zimmermann (4-3, 4.44 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Edwin Jackson (2-2, 3.32)

Zimmermann lasted only three innings against Cleveland on Sunday as he surrendered five runs and six hits en route to losing his third straight start. The 32-year-old native of Wisconsin has been tagged for 13 runs and 24 hits over 14 2/3 frames during his losing streak after yielding a total of two runs over 20 innings in his previous three turns. Zimmermann is 1-0 with a 2.60 ERA in three career starts against Oakland, including a no-decision on June 25 in which he scattered four hits over five scoreless frames.

Jackson halted his four-start winless streak on Monday as he scattered three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings against Toronto. The victory was the 100th of the 34-year-old journeyman's career and first since June 30, when he limited Cleveland to two hits - a pair of solo homers - over 6 2/3 frames. Jackson is 4-2 with one shutout and a 3.23 ERA in 11 starts and five relief appearances against the Tigers, including a no-decision at Detroit in his debut with Oakland on June 25 in which he gave up one run and six hits over six innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Athletics 2B Jed Lowrie notched two hits on Friday after recording just one over his previous four contests.

2. Detroit acquired RHP Christian Binford from Baltimore for a player to be named or cash and assigned him to Double-A Erie.

3. Oakland sent RHP Carlos Ramirez outright to Nashville.

Preview: Astros at Dodgers
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

There is a definite postseason feel in the air this weekend at Dodger Stadium, where the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros are meeting in a rematch of last year’s World Series. After opening the three-game interleague set with a 2-1 victory behind ace Justin Verlander, Houston aims for its fourth straight win on Saturday.

Verlander struck out 14 batters in 7 2/3 innings and Hector Rendon recorded his 11th save Friday as the Astros improved to a major league-best 38-17 on the road. George Springer returned after missing one game with a sore left shoulder and delivered an RBI double in three at-bats from the leadoff spot, but Martin Maldonado went 0-for-2 with a walk and is hitless in his last 32 at-bats. Los Angeles set Dodger Stadium records for runs scored and homers (seven) in Thursday’s 21-5 win over Milwaukee but was held to four hits in Friday’s series opener. Joc Pederson homered in the first inning for the second straight game, but the Astros cooled off the red-hot Yasmani Grandal, who went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (10-6, 4.06 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (7-6, 3.48)

McCullers lost his third straight start on Sunday, allowing four runs - three earned - and six hits while striking out 11 across 5 1/3 innings against Texas. The 24-year-old Floridian retired the first 11 batters he faced and permitted just one baserunner in the first four frames before running into trouble in the sixth. McCullers faced the Dodgers twice in last season’s World Series, giving up three runs over 7 2/3 innings.

Maeda served up a three-run homer in his second straight start and took the loss after giving up four runs over 4 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on Monday. The 30-year-old had posted a 2.34 ERA over his previous 10 starts but exited early versus the Brewers after throwing 102 pitches. Maeda made four relief appearances against Houston in last season’s World Series, giving up one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Houston RHP Roberto Osuna (suspension) is expected to be activated prior to Sunday’s series finale.

2. The Dodgers placed Erik Goeddel on the 10-day disabled list with right lat inflammation and activated fellow RHP John Axford, who was acquired from Toronto on Tuesday.

3. The Astros placed RHP Chris Devenski on the 10-day DL with left hamstring tightness and recalled LHP Cionel Perez from Triple-A Fresno.

Preview: Blue Jays at Mariners
Gracenote
Aug 4, 2018

James Paxton tossed a no-hitter when he faced Toronto earlier this season and looks for another strong outing when the Seattle Mariners host the Blue Jays on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series. The Canadian left-hander struck out seven and walked three while stifling the Blue Jays in the May 8 contest in Toronto.

A Seattle team that was outscored 14-5 while losing the first two games of the series could use another strong effort from Paxton, but the 29-year-old told reporters that the no-hitter means nothing when he steps on the mound Saturday. “I will definitely look at that game and how I am going to pitch to guys and how they approached me,” Paxton told reporters. "But it will be a different game. Your stuff is always different." The Mariners are just 7-15 over their last 22 games and Toronto is taking advantage of the struggling club as it registered 11 hits - two homers - in each of the first two contests. Toronto's Randal Grichuk recorded a season-high four hits on Friday and is 8-for-19 with four doubles over his last four games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (4-8, 4.90 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (9-4, 3.49)

Estrada lost to Oakland in his last turn as he gave up four runs and five hits over four innings. The start was the first in 27 days for the 35-year-old Mexican after he suffered a gluteus strain in the first inning against the New York Mets on July 3. Estrada is 2-3 with a 3.90 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners and has struggled versus Nelson Cruz (6-for-13, two homers).

Paxton returned from a back injury to defeat Houston in his last outing by scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings. He lost his previous two starts, including a setback against the Los Angeles Angels on July 12 in which he retired just two batters before exiting due to lower back soreness. Paxton is 3-2 with a 4.71 ERA in five career turns against the Blue Jays.

WALK-OFFS

1. Mariners 2B Dee Gordon (ankle) was in Friday's lineup after departing the series opener and went 0-for-4.

2. Toronto activated CF Kevin Pillar (collarbone), who went 0-for-3 on Friday, from the 10-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Buffalo.

3. Seattle placed Juan Nicasio (knee) on the 10-day DL and recalled fellow RHP Chasen Bradford from Triple-A Tacoma.
