Colorado Avalanche PK +135

( 1 ½ unit play )
It’s the thrilla in manilla II. Number I went the distance in Colorado nine days ago with the Wings delivering the knock out punch in OT. Curtis Joseph played a spectacular game and out dueled David Aebischer for 59 minutes. If it wasn’t for a brain fart he experienced in the opening 1:52 of the game he would have pitched a shutout and the extra frame would never had been needed. The Avalanche opened the game with two quick goals and looked as if the game would be a blowout but Joseph did a about face and stopped everything else that came in his direction for the remainder.

Today Dominik Hasek won’t be there….Curtis Joseph won’t be there. Today you’ve got Manny Legace?
At first glance of his stats you’d think there wasn’t much of a drop off. Actually he ranks 11th in the league with a 2.07 GAA. However of the 21 games he’s started only 8 times has he played against a team that was above .500 In those he went 4-3-1 only beating St.Louis, New York Islanders, (back in November when they were sub .500), Nashville, and San Jose. The Red Wings have clearly used him in a back up/ mop up role to Hasek and Joseph. He has not faced a team nearly as complete, deep, or looking for revenge like he will face today versus Colorado.

These two teams are evenly matched. Until you get to the goaltending. Aebischer has a slightly better GAA at 2.03 and a far better save pct. (.929 vs. .918) while compiling those stats in twice as many games as Legace. If you look deep you’ll find these two goalies aren’t close to being even.

So I’ll take, with great confidence, the Avalanche and Aebischer to get their pound of flesh in this heavyweight re-match.

Dallas Stars -.5 -115

Those aren’t boos you hear in the Glendale Arena. They’re saying Looooo….sers. Since they opened their state of the art arena the Phoenix Coyotes have gone 2-9-2 at “home”.

Phoenix dug down deep last night after their players only team meeting Wednesday night. But they still came up short. They came out fired up and put two quick goals up and then gave up five. Now they have to face the surging Dallas Stars after losing to the Islanders last night, (this is their third game in four nights).

Brian Boucher has fallen and he can’t get up. How could someone that just set a NHL record for the longest consecutive minute streak without allowing a goal look so bad now? Answer: no man’s an island. Without a team in front of you, what could any one man do? And now that Sean Burke has been dealt it’s time for Phoenix to sink or swim with this guy.
In his last six starts the Coyotes have given up 27 goals, (4.5 average). They have allowed 5 goals in each of the last four games. The team has gone 1-10-2 in their last 13. In a word, they stink.

Dallas is like the sleeping grizzly waking from the winter nap in time for the spring (play offs). They have lost five times in the last two full months. (16-5-6)
They are 8-1-2 in the last 11 and gathering momentum. They are a better team in every facet of the game than the Coyotes. They are rested and will have no problem in beating this team just as convincingly as the New York Islanders did last night. And I can hear the Looooos now.

RX to Date 11-2-0
NHL to Date 54-35-3 +18.89
1 ½ Unit Plays 3-0-0 +4.5

Total……..57-35-3.…..+23.39

vig, glad to see we are on the same time with Colorado...great call on NYI yesterday...very BOLD as the trends seemed to be towards pheonix...My Local had Pheonix +110 so he sucked me into a play on Pho as I felt the +110 was too good too pass up....

bryan...I am also liking Boston who are on fire right now...managed to come back & lose in OT to the sens for their only recent loss as of late...A visit to Chicago should definately but them back on the winning side of the ledger.

Am also liking the over in this game right now....the 5.5 scares me however the +118 in juice is very tempting....best of luck to you...

Savant,
I understand your lean to Phoenix yesterday and believe me after the first period I was doing some reconsidering of my choice of the Islanders. But the ultimate testament to my choice is even if it lost I would not had second guessed my selection.

I don’t mean to harp on this but trends mean little to me when the guys that created them are not the same ones who are taking the ice that night, (both literally and figuratively).
You can find truth in any system or theory if you look hard enough. Back in the late seventies I was into bio-rhythms and was convinced that because some guy was born on a certain day you could predict how he would perform by where in his personal cycle, ( physically, intellectually, and emotionally ) he happened to be. It went so far as knowing when a team was born to include in the calculations. Please!
Give me current form and rational logic any day. You can so easily over handicap and frankly it’s not that difficult. My recipe for success is…Keep it simple, watch the games, read the web sites, and look for value in the lines. Not rocket science, as I’m not the world’s most intelligent handicapper , but it’s been a winning formula for me.

Boston/Chicago Over 5.5 +118

I really wanted to find someone that would post a 5 on this game and have been waiting on BoDog to finally decide to put up some hockey numbers, ( those guys are sooooo sloooow ), but Pinnacle’s number have risen a few cents and I’ll bite.

The only concern I have in this game is Bruins net minder Andrew Raycroft and the status of Sergei Samsonov. Raycroft should start and what can you say that I haven’t already said about the way this guy has been performing between the pipes. Samsonov is day to day and will be a game time decision. Without him the B’s offense is not the same. Factor in Joe Thornton’s wearing a cage to protect his grill and seems to have lost a bit of his peripheral vision and mobility. He hasn’t been the same offensive threat since.
However, with all that being said, the Bruins have found goal scorers through out the lineup and few teams have played a more wide open game than the Chicago Blackhawks as of late. Chicago have registered overs in 7 of their last 9. They also have no less than 4 defensemen on the I.R.

Florida/Tampa Bay Over 5 -105

These two teams, combined, have flown over their respective totals 15 times in their last 19 games. Although in their last 5 head to head dating back to last year they have failed to reach the total in each but it’s difficult to compare who they are now to who they have been. Trends are to be considered but personally I need to see some correlation between them and current conditions otherwise all they are is meaningless static in your endeavor to forecast a contest. I’ll put my stock in present form ten times over what occurred a year ago.
This number is more than reasonable at a pick. Stick with what works.

Anaheim/Vancouver Over 5 -112

I got burnt on the Canucks last night on the total of five and a half. Despite five goals scored being scored with over thirteen minutes left to play the most important score would never c**** the line. If it wasn’t for a remarkable performance by Atlanta’s Pasi Nurminen, (especially in the first when Vancouver out shot the Thrashers 13-1), this game would have gone over the number in the second period. After playing terribly in his last four games, giving up 5 goals in each game, he and the Thrashers played inspired and came away with the large upset.

Now the Ducks come into town playing on back to back nights and third game of four days. With two games in a row by Giggy Giguere in net look for Martin Gerber to be playing tonight.

After going over the number in six of eight from 1/19 to 2/3 they’ve failed in the last three. However those three were a 4-0 victory over the Devils, a 3-2 loss and push on the total to Calgary, and last nights total that lost to the hook. I have to believe that they will regroup their form against a suspect Anaheim squad after playing against the slow down styles and defensive minded New Jersey and Calgary, and a spectacular show by Nurminen last night. They have lost four of their last five but will not only win this game tonight but score numerous times in the process. Lastly back up goalie Johan Hedberg could very well be in net with Dan Cloutier playing the last three and Colorado on deck for Monday night. Hedberg is 6-4-1 on the O/U and 2.41 GAA / 8.97 save percentage.

Anaheim have gone over the total in 7 of their last 9 and putting a few in on their own, averaging 3.22 per game.

How do you guys feel about SJ -0.5?

SJ has won 10 of 14 meetings with Columbus and Columbus only has one win in it's last 4

I also like Colorado +0.5 and Boston -0.5!

The Sharks need to get back on the winning side of the ledger but they've lost their last four on the road, albeit to all tough teams or who play very well at home.
I say what the f*** get some b**** and go for it.
