I guess that must be on local (Tampa) news. I can't find anything on the breaking sports news links I have. Not surprised though.

Thanks, wil.

The Raiders took Pro Bowl defensive tackle Warren Sapp away from the Bengals at the last hour Saturday when NFL and media sources said he took a seven-year deal for $36 million.

Sapp didn't even list the Raiders as an option earlier Saturday on his own web site (qbkilla.com) on a list thst included the Bengals, Saints, Ravens and Giants in a poll titled, "Where Should I Play?"

It's not Cincinnati even though indications are the money was probably about the same at about $5 million per year as the Bengals missed out on their biggest free-agent signing ever. But it probably came down to the way it was structured. The Bengals almost certainly didn't offer the 31-year-old Sapp a seven-year deal and probably tried to limit it to four. And apparently they were uncomfortable with Sapp's age and the number of younger players they might have to cut to make room under the salary cap.

But the Bengals weren't commenting Saturday and agent Drew Rosenhaus couldn't be reached for comment.

The news of the Bengals’ pursuit of Sapp this week energized fans who were supposed to be wrapped up in the NCAA basketball tournament and his possible future teammates. ...More...

Me too, it has been a while since the Bengals faithful had much to get excited about. Who knows sometimes the deals that don't get made are the best deals. Marvin Lewis is pretty sharp, I can't blame him or the Bengals front office for not selling part of the team's future. Time will tell if they were wrong.

Hilarious, Raiders just making sure they stay mediocre for another decade. Sapp has a good year or two in him, maybe, if he comes to play. Warren being a winner and a guy that likes to get on the other team when his is winning won't get many chances to do that this year. Some guys spend the end of their careers looking for a place to win a title, Warren with his ring safely on his hand went looking for a place to make some money and not have to play more than 16 games a season.

The Raiders have made 2 potentially disasterous signings. First they signed Ted Washington. Washington was good in NE when he played a limited number of plays. In Oakland, based on a 4M signing bonus, he will be expected to play more. At at least 100LBS. overweight, I don't think it's possible. What Washington did was get a golden parachute. 4M signing bonus. He'll take the bonus, tank the season, get cut in 2005 and bid the NFL good-bye.

Warren Sapp may do all of the above. Overweight, and overrated based on his play of last year. Even his success two years ago was aided in no small part by Simeon Rice. He too will take the golden parachute and fade into oblivion in a year or two. The differences between Ted Washingon and Warren Sapp - Ted Washington was more overweight and Warren Sapp has the bigger mouth.

I guarantee you that Sapp doesn't get past two years of this contract. Three reasons why.
1) The cap figure will be astronomical and none of the money after year two will be guaranteed.
2) Sapp doesn't have much left in the tank. He's about 32-33 years old and is in a rapid decline.
3) The contract sounds incredible but since probably only one or two years is guaranteed, the contract after year one or year two is all about Drew Rosenhaus and Sapp having something to crow about to friends and future clients. When Sapp is released after year one or year two and over 25 million of the 37 million isn't paid out not much will be said about the original numbers.
