Sammy Sosa's Skin? Just 'Rejuvenation'
Sammy Sosa's skin has not been digitally altered in the recent photo you see on the left. And despite the theories flying, this also isn't Michael Jackson Part II -- his skin hasn't been stripped of any pigment by a disorder such as Vitiligo.
It turns out Sosa has just been undergoing a "rejuvenation process," according to Cubs employee Rebecca Polihronis, who speaks frequently with the baseball legend.
"He is going through a rejuvenation process for his skin," Polihronis told the Chicago Tribune. "Women have it all of the time. He was surprised he came out looking so white. I thought it was a body double. Part of (the photo appearance) is just the lighting.
"He is in the middle of doing a cleansing process to his skin. The picture is deceiving. He said, 'If you saw me in person, you would be surprised. When you see me in person, it is not going to seem like the picture.' "
The photo in which Sosa's skin appears bleached was taken Nov. 4, when Sammy and his wife Sonia attended an awards event at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
After the startling photos circulated around the Internet, many began to question what exactly had caused Sosa's pale skin color. But as Polihronis said, Sosa is "not trying to be Michael Jackson."
"People who saw him in person did not react the same way. He can't believe it is such a big deal," said Polihronis, who is the former Cubs Care/Community Relations manager for the team.
According to the Tribune report, some of the possible side effects for this kind of laser skin rejuvenation include discoloration, as the treated area may become lighter or darker in appearance. Sosa reportedly sought the dermatological process in order to repair some of the UV damage from playing so many years of baseball in the sun.
Sosa announced his intention to retire from baseball on June 3, and if that retirement stands, he'll finish his career with a whopping 609 home runs and 1,667 runs batted in.
Well, now that the skin mystery has been solved, we can move on to other questions -- like wondering why Sosa has taken a liking to green contact lenses.

Sammy Sosa says a cosmetic cream he uses to soften his skin is the reason for his lighter skin tone.
The former Chicago Cubs slugger was photographed at the Latin Grammy awards in Las Vegas last week with a noticeably whiter face. Sosa says he has been using the cream for a long time, and combined with bright TV lights, it made his face look whiter than it really is. Sosa says he is not trying to look like late pop star Michael Jackson and is not suffering from any skin illness.

That's what radio host Enrique Santos, so-called King of All Spanglish Media and host of a show on La Kalle 98.3 FM, wanted to give him as a gift, but never had the chance. At Sosa's big birthday bash Saturday at the Fontainebleau, Santos thought he'd have a little fun with the whole ``Lighteningate'' situation -- Sosa's been seen recently with a much-lighter skin tone and green contact lenses -- and showed up looking like he had been locked into a spray tan booth.
``I'm currently using a cream which has darkened my complexion,'' Santos said snarkily. ``Ironically, Sammy is going through the same process, but the cream he is using is making him white.''
While on the red carpet doing interviews, Santos was approached by a publicist who told him, ``You can't make fun of Sosa,'' and eventually kicked him out of the affair.
``I asked her, `How many women in here are wearing makeup?' but she wasn't having it,'' Santos told us. ``Was I not white enough for Sammy's party or have the millions gotten to his skin -- I mean head?''
In other news, Tara Reid and playboy Thomas Kramer were seen together again, this time at Quattro on Saturday, with a large posse of what our spy called ``table sycophants.'' Following dinner, Reid and Kramer stopped by a private house party on Hibiscus Island. Seen at the party: Vince Shlomi, aka the ShamWow infomercial guy, who was arrested this spring for alleged battery on a prostitute. According to our spy, he was ``without the ShamWow and without a hooker.''
