Finally some common sense prevails in California.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- The California Supreme Court voided all same-sex marriages sanctioned by San Francisco this year, ruling Thursday that the mayor overstepped his authority by issuing the couples licenses.

The court said the city violated the law when it issued the certificates and performed the marriage ceremonies in a monthlong wedding march that began February 12, since both legislation and a voter-approved measure defined marriage as a union between a man and woman.

The court, however, did not resolve whether the California Constitution would permit a same-sex marriage, ruling instead on the narrow issue of whether local officials could bypass California's judicial and legislative branches.

3995 couples, that's 7990 individual Americans, were just told that their relationships are not legitimate under the law.

No matter your thoughts on gay marriage, the sense of sadness that these people feel can only be enjoyed by people who truly hate gays.

***WRONG! i live in CA and have most of my life. this ruling SUCKS! for the record i am 100% hetrosexual. i have ZERO desire to do anything sexual with a man. i adore women too much.

but this is WRONG!

life is too damn short. if it makes someone happy to spend the rest of their life with someone of the same sex - where is the harm? whose being hurt here? don't tell me the people in the relationship - for they entered into it out of their own free will.

for those who are going to say this ruins the institution of marriage i ask you this:

Would that be the same institution where over HALF of all who enter into it get divorced?

if so - i think we can make a pretty solid argument that the hetrosexuals who get married do a damn fine job of ruining this institution on their own.

to me - this is bullshit! with life being short - should happiness of life be more important than just about anything else?

how would we like it if the person we wanted to marry wasn't allowed to do so because society said we can't! how fast do you think people would complain and bitch about THAT! i'll tell you how fast - faster than the man who wins the 100 meter dash at the olympics!

it's about time the USA pulls itself into the 21st Century and gets with the times!

When Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore was forced to remove the 10 commandments monument from the state judicial building by a federal Judge, I didn't see libs complaining.

Even though 77% of the people polled disapproved of U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson's order to remove the monument.

In separate legal action, the city of San Francisco and gay rights groups are suing the state of California to get the law banning same-sex marriages overturned. That case will be heard later this year.

A similar case in Massachusetts led to the legalisation of gay marriage in the state. The first gay weddings began there in May.

President George W Bush strongly opposes gay marriage and is seeking to change the US constitution to specify that marriage can only take place between a man and a woman.

Gay marriage is already banned in 38 states, but lawsuits in Florida, Nebraska, New Jersey and Oregon are seeking to have it ruled legal.

Mr Bush hopes to make individual states' attempts to legalise gay married irrelevant, by outlawing it nationwide.

But last month, a constitutional amendment failed to get enough support in the Senate, delaying the issue until after the November election.

Mr Bush's Democratic challenger in the election, Senator John Kerry, opposes changing the constitution and says states should have power to decide whether to allow gay marriages. He favours civil unions, rather than gay marriage.

"Finally some common sense prevails in California."

There is no "common sense" when it comes to matters of individual choice and individual morality....

The only thing "common" is the diversity of culture and lifestyles found among the masses of people living on this planet.....as a straight, heterosexual male I consider myself lucky to be living in one of the top 15 countries in terms of freedom...

Perhaps someday when this nation turns into a totalitarian police state with brutally oppressive government controls, then all the bigots, racists, homophobes, sexists, and all the other closed-minded individuals that desperately need a life will appreciate what freedoms they had, and lost, and will have something of substance to actually bitch about.

I await that day as well. It will be interesting to see if all these people will fight and die for their principles or fold like a cheap camera. Marco, I should remind you that those bigots that you mention are none other than George Washington, Tom Jefferson, etc., if you think Americans today are tough on gays you should see what they did back in the 18th and 19th centuries.

What you wac jobs fail to realize that there is a process!!

One of these times and I can't wait is when the thong is on the other ass and you people will howl to high heaven about something you don't like being bypassed.Like a judge with some balls saying that the constitution does not provide for welfare, school lunches, etc. etc.

For over 200 years gay marriage was illegal and America is still free.

I think I can safely conclude that if gay marriage stays illegal the US wouldn't become a totalitarian police state with a brutally oppressive government.

And the US wasn't a totalitarian state when it didn't allow women to vote, or mixed marriages, or property ownership by blacks. Would it be remotely acceptable for you to bring these exclusions back?

Eek: I wrote a paper in high school - Catholic High School - on that exact topic. I got an A, but five detentions as well.

'I'm going to burn in hell for eternity' went through my mind as I wrote that...
------------------------------
The subject I focussed on was Judas at my Catholic schooling stage.

I regarded Judas as a victim, not a villian.

Jesus knew what he was going to do, and yet he made no attempt to sacrifice himself to save Judas.

------------------------------
Plus Jesus got the best deal in history.

A few days of suffering got him the vice-presidency of paradise for eternity.

No it wouldn't be remotely acceptable to bring back those laws.

If you call a state a totalitarian police state with a brutally oppressive government for not allowing gay marriage then polygimist should have the same right too.

Also, if mom and son or father and daughter can't marry then they too are are under a totalitarian regime.
