I don't understand how you have two lighters and are in a forest area and still not start a fire. They burned all their tires so they could have dried some wood off during the tire fires and kept the fire going.

It took great courage to try to get help but it was the wrong decision. He should have stayed with his family and he would be ok today. At least if they never were to get rescued the would perish together.
I know it is easy to say after the fact. But if ever faced with a similar situation stay with your vessel.
