Natasha Richardson dies at 45 after ski accident
NEW YORK – Natasha Richardson, a gifted and precocious heiress to acting royalty whose career highlights included the film "Patty Hearst" and a Tony-winning performance in a stage revival of "Cabaret," died Wednesday at age 45 after suffering a head injury from a skiing accident.

Alan Nierob, the Los Angeles-based publicist for Richardson's husband Liam Neeson, confirmed her death in a written statement.

"Liam Neeson, his sons, and the entire family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Natasha," the statement said. "They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

The statement did not give details on the cause of death for Richardson, who suffered a head injury when she fell on a beginner's trail during a private ski lesson at the luxury Mont Tremblant ski resort in Quebec. She was hospitalized Tuesday in Montreal and later flown to a hospital in New York City.

Family members had been seen coming and going from the New York hospital where Richardson was reportedly taken.

Vanessa Redgrave, Richardson's mother, arrived in a car with darkened windows and was taken through a garage when she arrived at the Lenox Hill Hospital on Manhattan's Upper East Side at around 5 p.m. Wednesday. An hour earlier, Richardson's sister, Joely, arrived alone and was swarmed by the media as she entered through the back of the hospital.

A beginners slope does not necessarily mean bunny hill, it could have been a green circle.

not to mention this was some kind of delayed head injury. she actually got up and was talking and saying she felt fine.

There were conflicting reports. TMZ reported that she had major head trauma in the ambulance:

TMZ has obtained information about Natasha Richardson's ambulance ride in New York to Lenox Hill Hospital -- she was "unconscious," her pupils "non-reactive," her skin was "pale" and she was suffering from "major head trauma."

that is sad to hear. Even though it was a green trail, if you fall the wrong way, bad things can happen.

She fell on the bottom of the Nansen run, which I've skied myself. It is a gentle easy "green" run, but it can be extremely crowded, as it is the favourite of beginner skiers (and is one of the very few green runs at Tremblant). In addition, this week is a spring school break in parts of Canada, so it'd have been more crowded than a normal weekday might have been.

A report said she hit slushy snow (temps were several degrees above the freezing mark that day)

The main thing is she didn't have a helmet on. It is quite easy when falling on any ski trail to crack the back of your head on the firmly packed base that makes up a ski hill.

Very sad altogether.

This will piss some people off...

Don't get me wrong, this is a very tragic accident and i feel for her children and family. BUT........

this is another example of rich people with too much time and money on thier hands... just add her to the list, john kennedy jr. robert kennedy's son, sunny bono....that kid from 90210 who was in a race car (but lived).

They have money and they think they are invincible..... jfk jr. had no business being in that little plane flying over the atlantic at night....

the rich continue to put thier selves in harms way....

see i disagree with the post above...what does learning to ski have to do with having money? your saying bc she was rich she couldnt learn how to ski at 45? she was on a green bunny trail and something weird went down...tragic but i dont think it had anything to do with having money

Situation kinda reminds me of the girl who got hit in the head with a deflected puck several years ago (in Columbus?) . She seemed ok at the time, but died 2 or 3 days later (and is the reason they the have netting protecting the crowd at NHL rinks).

This is one of the reasons I don't ski. It seems like EVERYONE I know that skies has some horrible story of how they got injured and had to be pulled off the mountain. EVERYONE seems to have a story that involves the words " . . . and then Ski Patrol came and helped me . . ."

It just doesn't seem like that safe of a sport
