A little about the All Star Grand Slam by Lynn:
The star player of the game was Fred Lynn, whose grand slam in the third was the first in All-Star history. National League manager Whitey Herzog had ordered Robin Yount, the preceding batter, walked intentionally, which turned out not to be a good idea. "I take it personally," Lynn said later. By '83, Lynn had four home runs and ten runs batted in with twenty All-Star at-bats. Only Ted Williams had a higher All-Star RBI count, with twelve in forty-six at-bats. Stan Musial had ten runs batted in, but in sixty-three at-bats. Lynn's four homers tied him with Williams for the American League lead. The loss left the National League shell-shocked. They were no longer invincible.

Castaway, I don't know what Fish was thinking about when he said Burks was from the Yaz era.

Castaway-
He may have meant that Burks was drafted by the Red Sox organization in 1983 so that puts him around the Yaz era.

I think FISH meant Burks was signed to the organization in '83....

lol, "what did you mean he was alive then" lol

Milwaukeee and Boston must have had a mjor swap with Oglive, Scott and Cooper...I don`t think BOston had all of them at once.

Their lineup was so good the one year they had Hobson batting 8th or 9th, and had very goood power for back then.

At the end of the 1976 season, the Red Sox realized they'd be better off with a power hitter than with Cooper, perceived as a singles hitter, so they swapped the lefty Cooper to get the powerful George Scott back from the Brewers. Cooper flourished, batting over .300 his first seven years in Milwaukee.

Ben Olgilvie originally signed by the Red Sox, he could not crack Boston's starting lineup in 1971-73, and was traded to the Tigers for second baseman Dick McAuliffe. Oglivie played more regularly in Detroit, but was still on the bench enough to lead the AL in pinch hits in 1976, and after hitting .262 with 21 HR as the Tigers rightfielder in 1977, he was traded to the Brewers for pitchers Jim Slaton and Rich Folkers. He hit .303 in his first season in Milwaukee, then belted 29 HR in 1979 before recording career highs across the board in 1980, batting .304 with 41 HR and 118 RBI. His batting average plummeted into the .240s in 1981-82, but he still hit 34 HR in 1982 to help the Brewers to their only WS appearance, and in the WS he homered in a losing effort against the Cardinals in Game Seven.

BOSTON -- Red Sox designated hitter Ellis Burks was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday and will have surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.

Burks has played nine games this season, hitting .133 with one home run and one RBI. He'll undergo surgery Tuesday and it's not certain how long he will be sidelined.

The 18-year veteran signed a one-year, $750,000 contract in February.

Burks played six seasons in Boston after the team chose him with their first pick in the 1983 draft. He was an All-Star and Gold Glove outfielder in 1990, and left as a free agent after the 1992 season.

Burks then played with the Chicago White Sox, Colorado, San Francisco and Cleveland

He
really had a nice career, and never seemed to get into any trouble. Not exactly the status quo these days.

BOSTON (AP) The Boston Red Sox called up Brian Daubach from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday to replace Ellis Burks, who is expected to miss six weeks after knee surgery.

Daubach was designated for assignment by the Sox on April 10 and then reported to Pawtucket.

He was 0-for-1 with a walk in two pinch-hitting appearances this season for the Red Sox. He entered the season a .262 career hitter with 90 home runs and 322 RBIs in six big league seasons with three teams.

Daubach, who has often served as a designated hitter and can also play the outfield, averaged 21 homers and 75 RBIs for Boston from 1999-02.
