After watching Pete Rose on the news tonight, I am convinced that he deserves to be the first man inducted into both the Hall of Fame as well as the Hall of Shame.

As a baby boomer growing up in the seventies, I was treated to most of Rose's accomplishments firsthand.

I watched Charlie Hustle do the unthinkable on the field and off of it. He stretched countless singles into doubles, stole bases, usually head first , made diving catches, and most of all, he played the game at such an INTENSE level that is so rare to find in any modern day sport today.

However, as I sat here tonight with my eyes focused on one of my childhood heros, I just couldn't bare listening to such a hollow apology.

For Pete Rose to finally ADMIT to betting on Baseballl over a decade after he had been caught red handed didn't exactly make me warm up to him as I had hoped to.

He lied to the public and his fans for so long and his lack of remorse reared its ugly head in front of my eyes tonight so horrifically that I wanted to simply throw up.

I don't know anyone in this industry who is as much a pro gambling advocate as myself or this site.

And, in my opinion. what separates the WINNERS from the the LOSERS is CHARACTER

Pete Rose IS a CHARACTER in every sense of the word, making him my first and only choice for both the HALL OF FAME and THE HALL OF SHAME...

If he doesn t get in by next year he is done! He will never be voted in by the Veterans Commitee, NEVER! He may not even get enough support from the writers....And he must be accepted by next year or he is no longer even eligible!

Rose WILL NEVER manage again in MLB! PERIOD! This last stunt is dispicable (as he only admitted it finally, after all these years) fr one reason, and that was to SELL BOOKS! Rose was my favorite Non-Oriole growing up and I can`t believe this crap, if anything him admitting under these circumstances only worsens his public image! What a joke! What good is admitting it now and why would that change anything?

He was a HOF ballplayer, but by all acounts a lousy father and husband and pretty much one of the biggest jerks anyone will ever come across!

And damn does he look like shit!

The sad thing is Pete will be remembered as the guy who bet on baseball, not as one of the all time greats.

What he did do was take a chance on destroying the billion dollar empire known as MLB...WE are not managing the Cincinatti Reds, WE are not under the obligatory rule of MLB....

While this isn`t 1919, Baseball`s integrity was at stake and could have been tainted beyond repair( frankly I doubt that)....But the line has to be drawn somewhere, and he crossed it miserably....Put Pete in the HOF but he has no one to blame, and if he doesn t ever get in it was his fault...I dont think he really cares about the HOF as much as making money managing again, which will never happen...I heard Fay Fincent say today that IF Rose would have admitted this all along, there was a real chance this all could have been avoided...

Personally, I still think that he's a lying piece of shit, who despite an incredible amount of evidence against him, continued to lie lie lie for a damn long time. It's also fairly well known that he's done enough blow to make Darryl shake in his boots.

Was he any worse than the strike scenarios where Players said F*** the FANS?

i will never go to Cooperstown unless he is in the Hall of Fame.

There are some questions about your private business that you can keep as quite and as elusive as you wish. A persons gambling tendencies are not the business of anyone let alone the public. And to have some "rule" that you cant bet on baseball if you are in baseball what a joke. thats like a company having a rule you cant flirt with another employee. Or a rule that you cant swear or your banned from working again. Or a rule that you cant get a migrane headace. Or you cant daydream. its nobodies damn business if you flirt a bit, swear, daydream, get a headache or call a bookie and make a wager with your own money. If you are doing your job with all you can offer then that is all that matters. He was not fixing games he was getting in on some action, excited and stimulated. Maybe not a healty lifestyle but who cares its his private business Period. He went public now to make a few bucks and see if todays baseball leadership can see beyond his own private behavior and personal business and allow him to be put on a ballet. Good move by Pete I say.

I realize I am in the minority on this.

If I had a vote (which I do not) I would vote Rose into the HOF based on his past performance. HOWEVER, I would NEVER let him have ANY position in Major League baseball in the future.

That's asinine.

There is a TREMENDOUS difference between rules that are "none of a company's business", like prohibitions against flirting in the office, or daydreaming etc., and not betting on a sport in which you manage a team, which compromises the integrity of the game.

Because of the large number of games that are played and the frequency with which they are played, in-game managerial decisions are made more with the 'greater picture' (i.e. the season) in mind than is the case in any other major sport. If you have a big lead, you don't bring in your top-flight reliever so you can save him for upcoming games, even if he is best suited to getting the next several outs. With a big series coming up against a chief rival in two days, you rearrange your rotation so that you save your best starters to face theirs, even if it means lessening your chance of winning today's game. You give your top hitters a breather here and there to keep them fresh. Other pitching and hitting decisions are made constantly throughout games, with managers (ideally) balancing between decisions that are best for the specific game as well as for the entire season.

By betting on games his own Reds were playing, Pete Rose completely fouled up that delicate balance. He absolutely and completely ruined the integrity of the game. It makes absolutely no difference if he bet on his team to win or lose -- if he bet on his own team, then he compromised the integrity of entire season. Who can say how many times he left a starter in longer than he otherwise would have, so as to make doubly sure that he would win a particular game? How many times did he put his best hitters in the lineup when he otherwise might have given them a day off? How many times did he bring his closer in in the 7th inning and sacrifice him for the next two days, just because winning this particular game was so crucial. And this doesn't even begin to delve into over/unders...he might've deliberately left in tired relievers to give up extra runs to cover an over.

The whole thing stinks, and stinks terribly. It makes no difference to me whether he fessed up after 15 years of lies or immediately when caught (though the path he chose is obviously much, much stupider and worse)...betting on a baseball game in which you are the manager is, as it relates to the integrity of the sport, far worse than drinking, gambling, womanizing or anything else. It is the ultimate 'crime' against the game, and that is why he can never ever be forgiven.
