no big deal really, i did two at the same time...front lower two teeth...they drill a hole in the back of each...the puss comes squirting out and the smell will make you puke, cuz basically it's rotten meat. DONT SWALLOW it...
Then they grab the pliers and yank the roots out through the holes...feels similar to sticking your tongue in an electric socket, but not as pleasant...then a few days later you have to holes filled.
Tell the doc you dont need novacain or anything...it's not a big deal...

or you can add a little 'insurance' to your visit...this is what i did:
The doctor always tells you before hand what he's going to do etc and that you might feel a little 'discomfort'. So as the doc is getting ready to begin, and shooting in the novacain etc, his balls will be right next to your arm. When he leans over to start, put a hammer claw lock on his gonads. Then tell him, "Doc, because Im gonna have a mouthful of crap and wont be able to effectively communicate verbally with you about my pain, Im going to use a sort of 'sign language'...the pain I feel will be immediately translated to you...so make sure you've given me the REQUIRED NARCOTICS, up to and including the 'happy gas' so we both enjoy this as much as possible."

Works like a charm.....

just tell the doc to put you to sleep, put some Pink Floyd on your MP3, it's a great buzz going down. You'll wake up feeling a little drunk, should be painless, but don't let that stop you from telling doc not to be stingy with the painkillers.

a CHICK???? ugh...now you can't take ANY NARCS...you dont wanna look like a pussy in front of a hot chick...

Here's what I would do:
Tell her the pain is real bad, matter of fact, it's so bad that even breathing sends shooting pain down your right side into your genital area. Offer to show her...tell her it's a 'throbbing pain' and you respect her as a professional to examine it :)

wait...might wanna do that afterwards...

Root canals come under the category of their bark being much worse than their bite. You are all numb and don't feel any real pain, that hardest part is keeping you mouth open for however long the dentist takes to complete the procedure.

Routine dentistry and absolutely nothing to be afraid of unless your 4 years old.

Yep, after googling a bit about Root Canals, your sentiment seems to be correct.

This is a quote from the Wiki page on Root Canals

Although the procedure is relatively painless when done properly, the root canal remains the stereotypical fearsome dental operation, and in the United States, a common response to an unpleasant proposal is, "I'd rather have a root canal."

Come to costa rica and get them done. $200 each with a porcelin crown. alot cheaper than the coupon your looking for. And the dentist I use is great. have had alot of people come from the states to get their dental work done by him. Guy is painless. Im scared shitless of dentists and this guy has drilled me without novacaine. The ticket here and the dental work (plus a vacation) will be alot cheaper than getting done up there.

i used to work in the dental field, and root canals have nothing on those who need oral surgery. It's even easier than an extraction because the pain isn't really bad a couple days later.

Basically, you get numb, they put a green cover in your mouth to isolate the area, use little files to take the nerve out, and then they cover the tooth with a filling. Not bad at all.

Will has it exactly right!
You might want to ask your dentist for a prescription for valium to be taken one hour before the appt. It's no big deal at all....just sounds scary. If your dentist has oxygen have him use it---nothing but a hose that fits over your nose. You won't know the dentist even did any work.

Root canals are nothing if you have a good dentist. If you have enough novocaine, you wont feel a thing. I was eating the same night. Had a crown put on and needed the root canal.. Never felt anything.

I have had all 4 wisdom teeth out, knocked me out, woke up, was fine that evening. Just find a solid dentist and you will be set.
