My first thought was Messi. No one can break a defender down like he can.

Then I watched this Cristiano Ronaldo video and changed my mind. Messi doesn't do some of the things other things nearly as well as Ronaldo (heading, free kicks, long range).

I would take Ronaldo

I talk with my sons soccer coach about questions like this all the time, He watches hours and hours of soccer, tapes games to watch, breaks down this stuff and an all around huge soccer fan.

He says Ronaldo is having a hard time because teams are marking him so well right now. Yes he flops, too much, but he is being marked by 1,2 sometimes 3 guys, and he still is able to score. This is why Rooney and others are getting so many oppertunities right now.

His coach loves Livepool, so I listen to what he says about Torres. He thinks Torres could be as good as anyone in the world. Maybe it is bias but he may be the next poll we put up, if and when he gets 100% healthy.

Good poll

Messi is clearly the number one player in the world at the moment. His dribbling skills and tight control may be the best the game has ever seen.

Please to do not mention Ronaldo's "great" free kicks. Line driving free kick after free kick into the wall or straight at the goalie is not special. Yes last year his odd delivery fooled some teams and he got some luck but that was it. He is not a top 25 free kick taker in the world.

And Torres of Liverpool should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Messi. The guy is highly overrated. Could not beat a player 1 v 1 without losing the ball if his life depended on it. Good finisher and all but clearly lacking in some many other areas.

Messi is the best player to have on your team. Far superior team player than Cristiano and never a ball hog. Has no flaws in his game.

Cristiano is an awesome player also, but he tries to be too flashy and screws up, a bit too individual also and a flopper.

Messi in the box is amazing, he rarely misses. I would take Messi.

If anyone else deserves to be mentioned right now, its Zlatan. Talk about a guy being productive in recent times...

both good players ya maybe to a lot of people to me their both divers big time and that ruins their style and that's a big turn off for me.. i would appriciate a lower skilled player than these 2..
such as berbatov, crouch, tevez, santa cruz, robinho, raul, klose...

very tough question. no question that cr7 and messi are the top 2 players in the world, kaka is third. I voted for messi because i am a barca supporter and watch barcelona frequently. i find that when messi is on the pitch at times, he cannot be defended. he either slips in a brilliant pass or scorches a defender and scores a 92 minute winner.

on the other side is cristiano, who also makes an impact on the pitch. he makes defenders look foolish sometimes. i personally think he's a pompous bitch with a poor attitude. his head has not been in the game this year because he's going to real next year, which fuels my resentment for him.

the one tipping point for me is that cristiano plays in the epl, which is hands down the best league in the world. if you swap the two, messi would struggle to produce la liga like stats against physical epl defenders. when cristiano goes to spain, he'll put up monster numbers and tear la liga up too. spain will be crazy with the two

For me what separates Ronaldo is that he is a better player than Messi without the ball. Ronaldo is better at putting himself in position to score because of his size. Heading is not contest between the two.

Cristiano Ronaldo
Stats for English Premier League and UEFA Champions League
Games started: 21
Goals: 8
Assists: 6

Lionel Messi
Stats for Spanish Primera Division and UEFA Champions League
Games started: 18
Goals: 17
Assists: 10

Another stat for those who claim Cristiano gets fouled more frequently, same deal... UEFA Champions and Primera/Premier League Games.

Fouls suffered
Cristiano Ronaldo: 61 fouls in 23 games
Lionel Messi: 57 in 21 games
Pretty even I think.

Difference is... Messy always plays with his heart and soul, Cristiano doesn't.

how do you copy paste a u tube video ??

There's a little box to the right usually that says "Embed". Just copy paste whatever is in that box on YouTube into the quick reply box. Doesn't work when you are creating a new thread.

Not even close this season. Messi is best player in the world right now with Stevie G a close 2nd. Barca is still atop La Liga without Messi, Liverpool is mid-table at best without Gerrard.

Riquelme is good but I don't think it makes any sense to compare players that play in different positions. I would still take Messi over Riquelme any day.

BTW, Messi scored 2 more goals over the weekend.
