I believe we got off the Gold Standard after the Great Depression. And many still think it was the Gold Standard that prolonged the depression. We basically just followed Great Britain, who got off of it years earlier.

the problem with the dollar is the u.s. doesnt produce shit anymore. It really became the global currency after world war 2 when other major powers were crippled by the war in recovery mode. The auto industry and other industries really had no competition from other countries because we blew all that shit up. Now the u.s. has outsourced so much shit or just fallen behind in other industries that we don't have the power to be the worlds currency anymore.
