(CNN) -- Rodney King, whose videotaped beating by police officers sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots, has been arrested in suburban Rialto, California, for allegedly beating his girlfriend, law enforcement authorities said Tuesday.

JoAnne Naser said 38-year-old King attempted to choke her and punched her in the stomach during an argument that began Friday evening, according to Rialto Police Sgt. Randy DeAnda.

King was taken into custody after Naser called police Saturday. He was released Monday after posting $45,000 bail, according to DeAnda. The district attorney is looking at the case, he said.

King currently is on probation, having pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of a controlled substance and reckless driving after an August arrest.

King became a public figure during the 1992 trials of the Los Angeles, California, police officers accused of beating him during a 1991 arrest, which had been videotaped.

That trial led to widespread riots when four officers were acquitted of state charges. Two of the officers were later convicted in federal court of violating King's civil rights.

The verdicts seemed incomprehensible to a city that had seen the videotape of King, who is black, being beaten countless times by four white police officers.

The riot began the afternoon after the verdicts were announced and became one of the nation's bloodiest. It ended three days later with 55 people dead, more than 2,300 injured and 1,100 buildings destroyed.

King also won a $3.8 million settlement in a civil rights lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.

King has been in and out of jail since then. He has twice spent 90 days in jail for misdemeanor domestic abuse convictions.

Lets remember what happened before the police beat him up: King led officers on an extended chase at speeds exceeding 100 mph, then not only did he refuse to follow officers' instructions to get down, he is seen getting up and charging at the police several times (not shown on the media-edited/redacted versions).

Lets not forget 3-4 DUIs, and his repeated beatings of his first wife, as well as the time he tried to run over police officers who spotted him getting blown by a transvestite in an alley. In many of his stops and arrests, no charges were filed, likely because he had gained near immunity from police.

In my book he was a piece of garbage. Good Riddance to him.
