A father from Vancouver shot dead in his Costa Rican home appears to be the victim of a targeted hit, according to a local private investigator.

Brad Deering, 42, and three others were inside his gated community home in San Jose Thursday morning, when three men stormed the house, shot and killed Deering and tied up the others.

According to a Costa Rica private investigator, Douglas Smith, local police are calling the attack a home invasion, but “that doesn’t make sense.”

“This wasn’t a household robbery this was a hit,” Smith said from his office in Costa Rica. “They had one intention and one intention alone of capping him.”

While Smith isn’t investigating the case, he was made aware of the slaying by close friends of Deering.
According to Smith, three men dressed as security personnel fooled a guard outside Deering’s home into letting them in by claiming they were they to fix an alarm system.

They tied up the guard, crashed Deering’s home, tied up three of the four people inside while Deering tried to escape, but the intruders ultimately shot Deering three times.

“A home invasion usually is at night and they crash the doors, crash the gates and ... most of the time in home invasions they wait for people not to be there,” said Smith. “In this case they went in prepared, tied people up in broad daylight.”
“It doesn’t measure up as a home invasion.”

According to Smith, Deering “sold futures” in Costa Rica — which is unregulated and a dangerous business in that country.
“Buying futures as an investment is the most dangerous, most speculative investment you can possibly do,” he said. “Buying them from any broker in Costa Rica you’re playing in the twilight zone.”

Smith speculates that someone targeted Deering because they either lost money in a deal with him, or simply because his wealth was known, as he owned three fancy cars and lived in a high-end home.

“He had all the toys in the world,” said Smith. “He made himself a target in Costa Rica.”

But according to Smith, those who knew Deering had “nothing but nice things” to say about him. He also had a young daughter around 4-years-old from a previous marriage.

The Canadian consulate did not respond to media requests for information by deadline, but since Deering’s murder an advisory warning to “exercise a high degree of caution” when travelling to Costa Rica was posted on a Government of Canada travel website.
“There is no nationwide advisory for Costa Rica. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution and be vigilant at all times due to increasing levels of violent crime,” the advisory reads.

It seems Doug's biz is down quite a bit and injecting an uninformed opinion is the best way to get free advertising.

I knew Brad for a few years. He was a nice enough guy, but he was allergic to an honest buck. As long as I knew him, he was either doing sweepstakes scams, phony gold or silver futures, or selling his home for the 800th time. He went into every 'business' deal knowing the other side would be cheated as an end game.

Last year, in his place in Santa Ana, some guys paid him a visit and tried to abduct him, beating him in the process. The snatch was botched when he managed to get out of the car, tied up and bleeding in front of the neighbors. Same scenario, luxury car driven by the assailants. Apparently, this time he took more than a beating's worth from someone that wasn't willing to let it go. Not helping matters, Brad's facebook page was full of exotic vacations and lavish living at the expense of those whom he did 'business' with.

As I said, Brad was a friendly guy, always insisting on picking up the tab. But whatever he was into is what brought those assassins to the door that day.

For what its worth, your info is not correct. Our last 10 months have the biggest we have ever had. We are now part of the CFSI Costa Rica for Missing Children and have contracts with all the Ins. companies in the U.S. and work for the law firm that represents Craigslist. BTW the largest firm in the North West. I was asked and I gave an answer.

I don’t normally post but seeing that someone here took ashot at me after talking to my marketing company and attorney we made the decisionto set the record straight. The way I got involved in this was an on line newspaperasked me to do an interview with the TV station out of Canada they have arecording of my interview in that interview I said” I am not a media whore and don’tneed this”. The reason that the newspaper asked me to do it was we handle manyviolent cases (this year over 40). As far as business being down. After hiringthe No.1 private investigator marketing company in the world we have boomed! Wenow handle 80% of the workers comp cases and 90% of the missing persons andchild kidnapping cases. On the child cases we have been lucky to run at a 100% successrate. I wish all of you well and his daughter that no longer had a father.

I think he's talking about me, Doug. Since it was posted here in this thread that Brad Deering was involved in a number of scams, including what I consider to be very heinous 'sweepstakes scams'. Apparently S&S has a different take on it, and instead of enlightening us he has resorted to name calling.

Since you are here, Doug, what is your take on Brad Deering's business dealings? You called it a 'hit' likely by a disgruntled investor. Care to expand on that?

I don’t want to get into a pissing match and I admit that Icould be wrong. I am going by 30 yrs exp. along with 13 yrs working in LatinAmerica and over 100 private messages. 100% of the people that have talkedabout Brad have said that some of his deals were ???? but privately he was agood guy to have fun with. I have gone over all reports that I could get, looked at the photo of his body, his friends on his Facebook page. I have sentall reports to a friend that teaches private investigations at University ofWashington also to the president of National Association Of InvestigativeSpecialist along with 3 others and all have said that I am more than likely correct. If you want to call me you can.

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

I have no version of the story nor do I know the person who was murdered. I was just continuing your conversation by saying the so called PR company made dougpi look poorly on this forum. I don't know dougpi, the person murdered, nor do I know you.

Unlike you Hangman, I made a reflection. Please read my comment again and tell me where I called dougpi or yourself a name? Douche bag, oops!

S&S what is your problem? Why must you call names? I said you can call if you have a problem. I have not called anyone any names. I know that everyone on these boards had a black belt in computer but I have offered to talk to you face to face and have a beer and then you can tell me how stupid I am. You and I can talk and you can call me names and tell me that I am stupid. But to hide on a board others would have names for that but I wont. Again I wish you well. and "look poorly on this forum"?? What about "My advice to you is to start drinking heavily" that did not come from a MENSA member. Again over a cold beer we can talk.
