Makes me wonder why he was ever a pitcher...with a strong bat and that arm.

Wonder if it was his decision to go on the mound earlier in his career or ?

Belive it or not he really wasn't that much of a hitter in high school. He batted around .320 or so with like 1 HR his senior year. Guy was an amazing pitcher though. He struck everybody out. I will say that I was 2 for 7 off him and then he hit me in the ribs with a 95 MPH fastball.

For someone to have played against this guy and know others who played with him, you sure don't know much about him.

He hit over .400 every year in HS and had a 3 HR game his senior year in '97.

not buying he wasnt a hitter in hs
he was always a good hitting pitcher, and half the pitchers in the majors hit 500 in hs

So true!

A good friend of mine was a great pitcher and first baseman.
He got drafted in the 8th or so round in 95 as a pitcher and later to find (many years later) the Twins were looking at him very hard as a first baseman in the round before he went.

What might have been for the guy......

That is a strange indeed because I could swear that as I type this I am looking at an old baseball newspaper clipping I saved from my high school days from the Palm Beach Post. It list the end of the season stats from area high school baseball players, and I do see Ankiels name on it, but next to his name it says he hit .349. I guess in some parts of the country .349 means over .400, but not where I come from. His average was only the 38th highest on the treasure coast. While that's not bad it's hardly great. Hell my team had 5 guys on it with a higher average. Maybe you don't know as much as you think about him either. See I have actual stats out of a newspaper, you have something that his high school coach told some guy that wasn't true.
