Arizona coach Rich Rodriquez has agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2019 season that will raise his base salary to $1.9 million. Included are several bonus incentives with the largest being $1 million for winning a national championship and $300,000 for winning the Pac 12 title. If I were Mr. Rodriquez, I wouldn't be spending those incentives for awhile. He has led the Wildcats to a pair of 8-5 seasons and 2014 looks more of the same to me. Arizona had the weakest non-conference schedule in the league in 2013. This year's out of league games don't look much stronger.

2014 Schedule

UNLV....@UTSA....Nevada....Cal....Open....@Oregon....USC....Open....@Wash State....@UCLA....Colorado....Washington....@Utah....Arizona State

Welcome any comments.......................

Damn if I just didn't read that Arizona State's Todd Graham also got a raise and extension. Graham's extension also runs through 2019. Guess his 18-9 record means more to the Devils than Rods does to the Wildcats. Graham's base salary now bumped to $2.7 million which puts him near the top in the Pac 12 conference.

Contracts in the past have meant little to Graham...this SOB will bolt in a heartbeat.

That's all that PAC12 new found revenue from the network. Also AD Greg Byrne got a bump as well to 750K/yr. With all the facility upgrades and coaching salary bumps, life is good. News that DirecTV might be about to add the PAC12 network which will be even more revenue

Honestly, he's way over paid. And I'm an alum and former player. There will be a considerable drop this year as the Erickson players run out of eligibility. These next 2yrs are critical for my Devils. We'll put up a ton of points on offense however defensive we are gonna be horrible.

Winone, I believe Graham helped your team to 10 wins last season...may be wrong without checking.

Probably before your time but I remember back in the 70's when Frank C. was head dog. He was a mean SOB but he produced some damn good teams. Arizona State was tough as nails and hard to beat back in that time period.

He had some hill/mountain he use to run his players on....former players said it was hell.

With respect to HC Graham, he's doing it with the talent that he inherited which is good. My fear is that he's not replaced all the lost parts on defense and they tend to wear down as the season progresses. They are not very physical.

With respect to coach Kush, he was in the NFL when I was playing there but later met him after his NFL days, and yes, he was a tough SOB. He bragged about having guys run the bleachers at Sun Devils stadium at high noon. He called them "shootouts". After camp broke, he'd have guys run "A"mountain when they'd get back to campus so they'd be too tired to re-engage with their girlfriends when they came down from camp in flagstaff. John Jefferson played at ASU well before me, but he told me that Kush wanted to break everybody down to their lowest levels then build them back up. Unfortunately, he ran off some really good players using this method. If you stayed, you were rock solid. What I like about him was we both share a hatred for Tucson Tech aka UofA.

Sounds a lot like Bear Bryant. Mean SOB his early years...both to coaches and players. Like you said about Kush, if you stayed, you were rock solid.

I had a coach in college who played for Coach Bryant at Texas A&M....he told me one time he hated him at the time but loves him now. He put me through practices that were worse than hell. But I survived it and life's problems will never seem to difficult to handle.

One of my favorite coaches and was glad to see him inducted into the "Texas A&M Hall of Fame."

You could be describing Stoops. Like Kush, he's been accused of being very hard on his players. But the ones who make it and stay injury free are pretty tough. Unfortunately OU hasn't been able to stay injury free for quite a while now..

GS, you certainly know Oklahoma football better than anyone here at the forum. Rumor. I've heard maybe Coach Stoops and staff have become a little lazy in their recruiting. Some say Stoops is to soft with his assistants....not the hardankle he once was.

Like I said, stuff I've picked up through some of the coaching grapevine. Right or wrong I don't know.

You live Sooner football...is the drive still there with the Oklahoma's coach?

Stoops is loyal to his coaches to a tee. But that's also been his problem since he kept a couple coaches hanging around too long, and they got very lazy in their recruiting. He finally got rid of the dead weight after the 2011/12 season, but his new coaches are still having a very hard time on the recruiting trail. What do Western Michigan, Florida Atlantic and Texas San Antonio have in common? They are all ahead of OU right now in recruiting..

Does Rich Rod get any credit for the spread offense???

I mean, WVU was an offensive powerhouse and then I think we all know you can't bring that to the Big 10 ( at the time ).....obviously Urban Meyer is doing it now and Indiana, Northwestern are trying as well

he is basically considered the creator of the modern spread offense. chip kelly didn't run the offense until after he met with dickrod down in clemson...same with northwestern. rod's been running this since early 90's at glenville st so is certainly credited as a founder of the modern version although we can all agree Oregon took it to another level

I would agree. But even before Clemson, I believe RR was running it at Tulane when he was coordinating Bowdens offense back then

Agreed... the second major shortcoming has been an all but useless defense (team discipline being the first) that could rear its ugly head WinOne... Shades of Dirk Koetter!! I'd just as soon forget the impact he had in the conference (vis a vis Arena Football to characterize it.)

However... after having seen a miraculous turnaround in penalties LY, do you give Graham a puncher's chance of recruiting well enough to put together a decent defense from scratch within a couple of years? How is he doing?

CL... in 2013 the conference rule that determined the CCG site was simple enough... the divisional winner that had the best W/L record hosts the Conference Championship Game. Stanford played the game @ Sun Devil Stadium.

Honestly, it's still up in the air but it's a good start. HC Graham has ties to Allen HS here in the Metroplex and he's really trying to get some traction here. It's very tough and very competitive especially in the big metroplex areas. DFW is a free for all for (OU/OSU/Bay/Tex/A&M/TCU/TxTech) and that does not include a LSU or Bama or USC dipping in here. Same for Houston area which has even more football programs and more people in general.
What I'd like to see Graham do and I've actually mentioned it is to take the approach of Gary Patterson @TCU. He wont waste a ton of effort getting 5 star kids, but he'll get a 4-star kid and coach him up to 5 -star level. Or get a 3-star kid and coach him up to 4-star level. Good thing is he's listening. if you check out the roster, we've got several Fr and So that are from Allen, Mesquite, Plano, Dallas and thats DFW area. But' he's gotta continue winning because competition is stiff and only going to get stiffer
